I have a 320GB caviar blue, that was running low on space so a upgrade was mandatory. For $40 which is actually the same price I got my 320GB from a retail store, this was a great deal. The hardware installation was pretty straight forward and painless. but keep a few things in mind when buying this product as an upgrade or for a build. when they say bare drive they mean bare drive. You get a box, packaged product and that's it. You will need some screws or a way to secure this drive to your case for a build or a housing to make it an external. Also if this is for a secondary drive (as it was for me) I would download the proper software from WD prior to installing this HDD. Windows (I have 7) will recognize the drive as a disc drive and not a Hard disc drive if you don't have the proper software from the get go. So to avoid having a redundant disc listing make sure you have the WD software. Performance seems solid so far, it only has 40GB of game data on it, but transferring over the games was painless and they launch perfectly. There does not seems to be an audible increase in noise seeing as two drive run now instead of just one and heat difference is also negligible and if this drive performs as good as my 320GB, this is another win from Western Digital.

Drive loud, stalls occasionally. Why I bought WD again, I don't know. They get GREAT reviews, but I have never had one as good as a Seagate, or even, Hitachi.Too late to send back.

Good drive, reasonable speed. Using as a backup in a external USB case. MUST be partitioned before use or windows can't see it. There is FREE partitioning software available from several secure download sites. (Majorgeeks{dotcom} is my favorite download site) Once you partition the drive you can format and use it normally. I am using this as a backup with cloning software from WD's website which works very well. Saved my ash just last week. I had switched from ESET to MS Security Essentials (it's free and now I know why) and within three day I got a highjacker. Couldn't do anything, couldn't even reformat the drive! Popped in the just-cloned drive and I'm back in business. (Also went back to ESET right away) BEWARE of FREE security!!!!(IT AIN'T SECURE!!!!)

I installed two brand new drives in February. They went into a security camera DVR which essentially records to them constantly on a loop. I usually get 1-2 years out of a set of drives. In early may they failed within a week of each other. I am going to try and RMA them to western digital.

I bought this drive earlier this month and glad that I did. Was looking at another well known brand, but went with this one because of the GREAT price and free shipping. Have used several of the 500 GB AAKX version, and are still running with no problems. Overall, a quiet drive. I do hear disk activity, but nothing to audible or annoying. Will continue to use WD drives!

This HDD is terribly loud compared to other HDD I have had, I used to have an old 120GB Samsung that was far better, then I just bought a 2TB Samsung and it is also more silent by far.Regarding performance it has done it well but it's been just 3 months since I got it, about reliability I won't make good reputation to WD because my other WD myBook failed after 2 years of use and I don't have high hope with this one, I don't know why I bought WD it in the first place, I guess it was for the price but if possible just add another 20bugs and buy Samsung or Seagate, you won't regret it, I bought WD and I am now afraid I will lost data in a couple of years.My Rig:ASUS P8Z68-V PRO Motherboard.Intel Core i5-2500K 3.3GHzCorsair Vengeance Blu 8 GB PC3-12800 1600mHz DDR3Case Coller Master Storm Enforcer.Corsair Enthusiast Series 750-WattCrucial 64 GB m4olid State DriveWestern Digital 1 TB Caviar Blue SATA III 7200 RPM (not a good choice)Spinq Vt Cpu Cooler Spinq Vt Cpu CoolerASUS VH238H 23-Inch LED Monitor

I ordered two of these drives: one to host my operating system (OS) and one as a back up drive. The one I was using for back up at first initialized and formatted correctly, but then the OS wouldn't recognize it anymore or allow the partition to be deleted and reformatted. I received a replacement for it from Amazon and it is working fine. Luckily I hadn't transferred any data to the drive while it was working because then I wouldn't have been able to wipe the drive prior to returning it.I have no idea what was wrong with the one I returned, but I can only chalk it up to bad luck. In all my research before buying this drive, it seems like every manufacturer has problems, depending on what reviews you read, so I can't say it's an inherent problem with Western Digital.The best part of the whole affair was Amazon's customer service. It was extremely easy to request a return, get a pre-paid shipping label, then ship it back. Amazon even shipped the replacement before I shipped the bad drive back, and at no extra charge.

I purchased the Western Digital 1 Tb Sata 6.0 Gb-s 32 MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare-oem Drive WD10EALX from Midwest Memory Outlet through Amazon. The drive was received within 3 or 4 days and was packaged extremely well. My original Seagate drive from my HP m9550F failed and was replace by the WD. The Seagate was the drive that HP kept shipping after a drive bios error was long known about. Information from the internet showed that lots of people lost valuable data because HP just kept shipping a drive with a known problem. Anyhow, I did get a bios update for the Seagate before it failed but it ended up failing anyhow.The WD10EALX drive is fairly loud. I still have the drive located outside the case so that may contribute to the sound level. The noise seems to be from the head movement. The platter spin is silent. For the price this is one drive that is hard to beat and I am well pleased with it. My bios can't take advantage of the 6 Gb/s transfer rate but the drive is plenty fast just the same. I have loaded around 600 gig of data onto it. After around 3 weeks I'll assume it will not fail and put the case back together. If it fails I'll update this review. I noticed on NewEgg that a few failures were being reported. Not the long-term ones but the more likely out of the box ones. Here's keeping my fingers crossed. (Boot drive failures are a pain).UPDATE:OK. I put the case back together. The drive is not silent but it is pretty quiet. I can hear just faint clicks as it does its thing. Very nice. No problems with the drive at all. Recommended.

I bought the 500 GB hard disk to replace the corrupted original disk in my Sony Vaio desktop from 2004. I have used it as a home theater PC and server with the system running for months at a time. There are no problems with this disk and it is much quieter than the original one. It's a great price, although on an old computer, I had to use an adapter also found on Amazon, which adapts this SATA connection to an older PATA motherboard.I'm amazed at the price because I revived a relatively ancient computer with $40 and a free copy of Ubuntu. Can't complain!

I originally purchased this drive as a backup for my 320gb WD hard drive in case the drive failed. I'd be ready with a dependable name brand drive in the event that happened. As things turned out, I found a 1tb WD drive a couple weeks later. That got me to thinking, why not have two internal drives in my machine? A couple of weeks of hit-or-miss, I finally decided to put the 500gb as my "C" drive for Windows Vista OS and my numerous programs and the 1tb drive for my data files. Perfect! One thing I didn't even try was to install these myself. They are "oem" and come without instructions, installation hardware, and the knowledge I'd need to successfully install them. Fortunately, I have a really good computer repair guy and he got everything installed and up and running. The machine ran much faster and smoother with these drives. I had the beginning of my "dream machine"! I'm pleased with these drives after more than six months all is still fine. I trust Western Digital and hope these drives will last for several years. Oh, I still back up everything two times on external drives... better safe that sorry. Highly recommended!

I am a technical person and ordered this for a client. Though I am confident it is a decent product, I ran GWSCAN on the hard drive and it had a read element failure during the test.So I returned it.The only other complaint is it took a week to get to me. Given this was from California (1 week) and when I ship from Newegg.com (3 days) they are in New Jersey. I live in New York, but that probably makes me too picky.

This Western Digital 500 GB Hard Drive installed easily and works perfectly in my Zmodo Surveillance System with 8 Weatherproof IR Cameras PKD-DK0865-NHD. A 500 GB drive was the smallest size I wanted to use since that will provide roughly 168 hours of recording time in my security system. The drive is fast enough to keep up with the video feeds and is not very noisy when in use.This works well for my needs!Highly Recommended!CFH

Compared to Caviar Black 750 GB this one is quieter with comparable transfer rate. The burst rate is slightly slower, but the quieter head movement far surpasses the advantage of the Caviar Black in my opinion. The audible clicking of the Black is irritating. It only comes with a 2 year warranty unlike the Black's 5 years. The bottom line is if you want quiet performance then go Blue. If you want longer warranty then Black is it. Speed differences are negligible and definitely not noticeable outside of benchmarks.

Ships without the jumper, and Western Digital refuses to ship me one. I called technical support and they told me to buy it on Best Buy?? You have to be kidding me. Can have this brick back since they are too cheap to provide the tiny jumper that is necessary for its installation.

I bought this drive to replace my 6yr old 150gig drive (also a Western Digital drive) which was running out of room. As of now the drive works beautifully no problems although I've only had it for 2 days. Here's hoping I get another 5-6 yrs out of this drive too.By the way I am really impressed with how fast Amazon dilvered the item to me. I ordered it late Monday night and got it early Wednesday morning. I didn't even pay for 2 day shipping.

Well, what can you say about a hard drive? I've always had the best of luck with this brand, others have been less than, ahem, thrilling, shall we say? Bought for a client's PC, whose old drive crashed, now running fine, everybody is happy, the price is great and fast shipping. Just remember to buy your SATA cables, glad I was replacing, not adding or I'd have been up that one, certain creek lacking any long-armed propulsion devices.

My use for these drives is to replace a couple of aging five year old 80GB drives in Windows XP and XP Media Center machines. Those drives are still running fine, however, for the price, I had absolutely no reason not to upgrade them at this time.I came across this drive middle of last week and Amazon was selling it new for $29 - I was scratching my head thinking "what's the deal" and "what's wrong with these drives"? Sure, even though they were above $25, Amazon was still charging for the shipping - so I took two to bring the per drive shipping down slightly. The old 3Gb version of this drive was selling for over $40 - so again, scratching my head about this. Maybe it was a pricing mistake? Whatever - it was a great price.The drives arrived yesterday, same standard OEM packaging all of my six other WD drives have come in over the past 9 months. I used Clonezilla to clone the old drives on to the new, it went smoothly without any issues. I'm storing the old drives just in case these new ones have any issues I won't have to rebuild the system drives from scratch.I know that the motherboards in my machines cannot make use of the 6Gb throughput, however, these drives are definitely faster than what they're replacing - older WD drives which indicate they are 7200RPM and 3Gb. Specs on the older drives indicate performance shouldn't be all that different, but it is, and for the better. I won't question it.The drive indicates you can jumper pins 5 and 6 to limit it to 3Gb, but I didn't understand the benefit of doing it, so I left it unjumpered and it's working well.To summarize - these drives are fast, quiet, and so far are performing excellently. I'm very happy with them thus far.

The 160GB drive on my Dell E520 was filling up, so I ordered this 1GB drive. Easier to upgrade than I thought: 1) Slipped drive into spare (plastic) enclosure -- no screws needed. 2) Attached spare power cable to drive. 3) Noted no spare Sata cable, so off to Radio Shack. 4) $4 later, all connected, and time to boot. 5) Told boot menu that I have a new drive on Sata port 4. 6) Booted to XP and confirmed with EaseUS Partition Manger that a new 1GB unpartitioned drive is available. 7) Used EaseUS Todo Backup to "Disk Clone" the old drive to the new drive (it took about 30 minutes to cloned all three bootable partitions from the old drive to the new drive). 8) Switched Sata cables so new drive became primary boot drive 9) Rebooted -- came right up! Also rebooted from other partitions of new drive, too. 10) Used EaseUS Partition Manger to increase partition sized up to max of new disk -- took about 15 minutes. DONE!

If you are going to buy this, might as well put in another 100 for the WD Caviar Green which is 32mb cache and 1tb. When it comes to speed and an HDD above 500gb. Cache is what matters most, do not overlook that fact.ANYWAYS! This is a good product. It does what it needs to do the only problem I had was simply the price. I may be wrong but it seems overpriced for being only 500gb and 16mb cache.
