the drive works fine i tried to use this hard drive to replace an ailing one i used this ancronis program which came from western digital and i could never get my boot sector to transfer so i guess i have backup copy .THIS SOFTWARE IS JUNK

Have had no problems with either of the two HD's I bought. You can't buy this type HD (ATA) in computer stores anymore. Western Digital brand drives have a reputation for very high quality and reliability.

Item # B000VRZ7PA Western Digital Caviar Blue PATA Hard Drive WD1600AAJBI ordered this through Amazon Market Place, because by the time I was ready to order it, Amazon was sold-out for the time being. Now it's re-stocked and I'm seriously considering ordering another. Unlike the display pages, this unit is bulk-OEM which came in a plasti-foil/mylar sealed wrapper. (no directions)The re-seller did an excellent job bubble-wrapping it for shipping and when I contacted them about specifications, they were helpful and informative. Pricing was competitive with Amazon's own department. This drive is a little noisier than my original drive, which featured a peculiar rubber sheath. But this little winder spins out a fast 7200 RPM, and the noise isn't anything approaching noise from the power-supply cooling fan.The Western Digital web-site features full specifications pages which are model specific. And there's a frequently asked questions (FAQ) menu with lots of information, some of which may apply to your needs. They also illustrated precisely the jumper settings configuration table I was looking for.If you're installing an Operating System, (this installation was Windows XP) your installation disk will perform the necessary format. Because mine was XP, it had the option of selecting either FAT-32 file system (backwards compatible Windows 95-98) or NTFS file system, which is upwards compatible with Windows Vista & Windows 7, in case you need to network and share files.

Now that I have gotten through the setup process the drive is excellent and somewhat faster than the previous boot drive and does not change system noise level.The setup difficulties were because the usual standalone utilities would not recognize the drive. Both WD utilities and Windows 98 boot disk to run FDisk failed until the drive was formatted under W2K. I was then doing an image copy of the old C: drive (boot partition) to the drive. I learned the hard way that from W2K on Windows stores the drive letter of the page file in the registry and the drive letter in the MBR (Master Boot Record) of the disk.The only way to make this the C: drive (to match the registry) was to format the partition under W2K using next available letter, then do the stand alone image copy from the old C: drive, then make the new drive the only hard drive in the machine and run standalone FDisk MBR to build a new MBR with the C: drive letter.If you are just adding a second drive, you will not have these problems. Just connect it as the slave and be sure the original drive is set as Master (see jumpers on back of drive), boot your operating system, right click 'My Computer', choose Manage, go to Disk Management and partition and format the drive as you want.

I needed more HDD space on my old computer, so I went with WD. I liked the software that came with it ( downloaded on there site ) to clone your old HDD worked great. Easy install, I have had it in for about 3 weeks works great.

It's been more than 2 years since i bought this item for my xbox 1 and i love it have all my games in there and don't have to be looking for the cds i just keep em stored, although my xbox sometimes gets error 12 which means the drive is heating or is not getting enough power from the power cord typical of an xbox so its good still playing games.

I bought this in May '10 to extend the life of an old PC with IDE disk controllers. Great price for a good size in old technology. For almost five months it was great. But one day in October '10, without any warning whatsoever, it has stopped working entirely. As far as the computer sees, even in BIOS and even with swapping around the data and power cables and the jumper, the disk is simply not there (but a different disk is still working okay, so it is the new disk and not the controller which is the problem).

I was able to install this quickly and get an sold computer with an old, failing hard drive back up and running within an hour. The drive is fast, and after a year, so far reliable. No problems here, other than it seemed to be slightly overpriced for 160GB... But that was a year ago.

Hard Drive Is DOA - I am Returning for a Refund. Will see how long the refund takes. I moved and let this sit for a while before I got the time to install - If you buy this or any other hard drive install Right away.... You only have a short while for your return if needed.

I purchased this drive as a replacement for my old 40GB system drive. So far, it has been working beautifully (1 month), and is definitely faster than my old drive. The only caution I have for someone contemplating buying this drive is --- be sure you have the necessary cable for connecting the drive (does NOT come with one) and also that you know how to format and initialize a disk drive. There is NO documentation included when it is packaged this way.

This hard drive is the best money can buy considering this is an older style PATA/IDE interface. Windows XP installed without a problem and the drive works flawlessly.For those who buy this and are looking for a fancy Western Digital Retail box this is not the right product for you. This is a bare OEM drive that does NOT include any accessories like store bought hard drives.

Installed easily in my Dell 8300, OS and application loads went very smoothly, no errors on disk detected. This drive is quiet, fast and efficient. It also runs a bit cooler than my previous hard drive. Have been using it everyday for the past 45 days with no issues to report. I think this hard drive is a good choice, I believe the quality, reliability, and stability of this drive makes it so.

My HD was DOA. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to wait for another delivery by mail and had to resort to Best Buy. The hard-drive is probably great when you get a good one. Amazon was terrific about the return.

Bought this 160 PATA after I purchased a Seagate 80 from Tiger. (They don't make it anymore; I wonder why?)The Seagate went into three diff. systems with every configuration I could throw at it, and all it would do is squeak.The Western works! It works without any special set up, just use an 80 wire cable and load your OS.Hard drives have always been a mystery to me, as most work, but every once and awhile you get a lemon; I think they ship them that way.The 160 is actually more than I needed, but with most people going for 500 Gig or a Terabyte this is about the minimum storage you can get these days.The drive is more than fast enough for my apps, and as I said, it works.

I bought this to replace my old internal Maxtor 30GB HDD. Can you imagine that, a 30GB hard drive? Well, when I first got my computer, I never thought I'd ever use up 30GB of HDD space, my previous HDD was 12GBs! All I can say is that it was easy to install and works, and I'm glad to read from the other reviewers that it runs cool as I suspect that heat (and probably old age) was the reason for the demise of my old HDD.

I purchased this HD about two or three months ago and am very pleased with its performance so far. I doesn't come with any cables or mounting hardware, but I didnt need any. Fit right into my Dell Dimension 4550 (2003 model) with no problems. Like another reviewer mentioned, you should know a little about installing this unit (i.e. master/slave settings, power cable, etc.), but it's not too complicated. I went to WD's website for the jumper settings. It's quiet, quick, and I got a great deal from Amazon. I wouldn't trust any other brand with my CPU.

I usually buy Western Digital Drives when I get HDs as I've found them do what I need. In this case, I had planned on setting up the new Windows 7 OS, but I didn't want to lose my older XP and Visa OSs. I had a WD 160 gig HD, but I felt it wouldn't big enough to have three partitions and have enough space for other things. (I wanted at least three 90 gig or larger drives as most things coming out take up the HD space.) This worked out great for what I wanted I have a 95 gig XP drive, a 107 gig Visa drive, and a 97 gig Windows 7 drive. Since I plan on installing the Ultimate version as I did with Visa, I should have enough drive space. I did lose a bit of space as I, on propose, used FAT 32 on the XP drive to allow a bit easier connect to my home network, but after installing XP, the Visa installation on second drive (D) went well and both systems now have fully up ans running OSs that are activated. So now I'm ready for Win 7. A good purchase for me.

I received the hard drive via US Mail.The hard drive rested on some flat uninflated plastic airbags so the result was that there was only a line layer of cardboard between the hard drive and the bottom of the box. This makes the hard drive inherently unreliable. Even if it works now, the probability of failure with valuable data lost is great. There was nothing to indicate that the post office had any reason to handle it gently and not throw it around.So I will have to return it. I am not going to take the chance.

Replaced a WD 40G drive which came in my used P4 workhorse. Former drive was beginning to get "bearing noises" and had "caution" status on CrystalDiskInfo. Used Acronis to clone 40G to new 160G. No problems with transition and new drive is quiet and fast.

Bare-bones OEM drive (no docs), but jumpers for my old Compaq's Cable Select addressing were easy to figure out. Biggest problem was old BIOS settings are not auto-selected; I trashed partition copies until I sorted out the BIOS.Don't add/change disks without good partition mgmt and copying software!This new drive is noticeably faster and quieter than my 2004 model WDC 60GB model.

I purchased this drive to replace the existing 80GB Western Digital hard drive on my Dell Dimension 4600, which had failed after 5 years of hard service. This drive from Amazon.com arrived earlier than estimated, in secure packaging, and installed easily (I had a buddy of mine who helped me install it and install Windows). Runs quietly, and somehow the computer seems to run much faster than when we were using the 80GB WD. I'm now in the market to get another of these drives as a secondary on this computer. I'm a happy customer!

I installed this disk on a dell XPS, 3GHz, 2GB memory. The machine is 6 years old and it was about time to replace the original disk. The installation went smoothly using Apricorn EZ Gig II software. I have three bays with two disks so the actual physical switching was kept to a minimum. I have had no trouble with this disk since I installed it and it sure runs faster than the old one which was very busy recovering errors.

A computer-savvy friend installed this unit for me - he had to go back to the mfr's website to download installation instructions and software. Took some trial and error on the software end. Not quite a simple do-it-yourself for the average computer user like myself.Once installed, unit is performing flawlessly - very happy with its performance.

This drive is exactly as advertised. It is a bare drive, no cables or mounting gear included (although you probably don't need either). It does not include instructions either; so you should know what you are doing if you are buying this hardware. It is an excellent choice for an older computer.

This is an excellect drive; probably about as good as it gets on the EIDE/ATA interface. Big and fast.But NOTE; this is a BARE DRIVE. You will have to go to the Western Digital website to get the utilities, diagnostics and instructions. And I found the utitlites and instructions weak. Too much reliance on wizards but, if they don't solve your particular problem, no help in doing things "by hand."Second caveat: If you want to use this drive with a version of Windows before XP-SP1 (or intend to install a pre-SP1 version and then update), you will run up against the "137GB barrier." This should have been noted in the product discription. The Western Digital utilities are supposed to include a solution, but I could not verify that because something was incompatible with the Windows XP "product restore" disks that came with my IBM NetVista (Not a Windows disk, but an image of the boot hard drive as shipped).Recommended without qualification for XP-SP1 and later.

What can I say, the drive works fine and is nice and quiet.had no problem setting it up, except there was an 8g partition I couldn't figure out what it was, but after the second try I was able to get rid of it. After that it was a breeze. the thing is fairly fast and works great.

Upon installing this Hard Drive (Which as a breeze) and installing Windows XP, my old system had a massive overall performance increase over its old WD Protege HD. Boot times were shortened from 3-4 Minutes to less than 40 seconds and programs open faster and respond quicker. A must buy for older systems that need a little performance boost.

I'm using this as a second hard drive in my desktop Macintosh. The drive has a sturdy feel to it. I've handled a lot of drives and this one is quite heavy when compared to the other drives I have used. I've had it in everyday use for over a month now and have had no problems at all and I don't expect any.This drive is a good value. When used on a mac you simply plug it in, and turn it on. Then use disk utility in the utilities fold to format the disk and your in business.
