I chose this hard drive for a budget gaming computer build. I chose it because Western Digital makes some of the best hard drives out there and back them up with a great warranty. The Caviar hard drives are original equipment for big name PC companies like Dell, and I can attest to their reliability. I'm an IT tech and work on a lot of computers that run 24/7 non-stop for years. We have workstations that are 6 years old and have run nonstop and we experience very few failures of these hard drives. Of the several dozen PC's we work on with these hard drives, we get maybe 1 or 2 failures every 6 yeas. Western Digital also makes the fastest SATA hard drives out there (not SAS/SATA) in the Raptor line. I use a Scorpio Blue in my MacBook Pro and love it.In the gaming machine it's pretty fast with the SATA III interface and 64 MB cache. It's drive controller has dual processors and something they call Dynamic Cache, which is supposed to reserve cache space depending on the amount of read/write activity. The write head also never touches the platter so it lasts longer.The Caviar Black line is the high-performance models of the Caviar line. You get 7200 RPM performance, fast SATA III 6 gbit/s interface, 64 MB cache, low-vibration, and quiet operation. I was surprised how quiet this drive is, having worked with noisy disks that chugged along. The disk reads and writes at 6 gb/s and a sustained I/O of 150 MB/s. For reliability, it's good for 300,000 load/unload cycles, which is a lot for a desktop hard drive. You also get a class-leading 5-year warranty. It uses less than 10 watts under load/unload, and doesn't get very warm even under heavy use.My only complaint is that it is a little expensive for only 500 GB, but again, you are getting a high-performance drive. There's also no NCQ (native command queuing, present as TLER on the RE drives) to help speed up I/O's. If you don't mind paying a little extra for a great drive, I recommend the WD Caviar Black.

When it comes to desktop HDDs, I've gone back and forth through many manufacturers. At one point, I swore by Seagate and their Barracuda line. However, that was many years ago. And while this is no Velociraptor or SSD, this HDD in my opinion is far better in the long run. Western Digital has solidified their Black line with this product and the 1TB HDD version. SSDs still have to drop in price/GB and exceed in longevity before I will jump on the bandwagon as the primary HDD in any desktop. For laptops and small form factors, go SSD, but for power computing and reliability, I want some spinning platters that will last. This disk is very fast, especially with SATA III and its 64MB cache. I have it as the primary drive in my MacPro, and I am amazed at the speed and overall improvement going from another 7200RPM drive. Not a gamer, so I can't review on that specifically, but I/O and read/write speeds on this HDD are phenomenal. Usually buy tech from Newegg or another reseller but got this on sale on Amazon and jumped the gun. Western Digital is the way to go, at least at the current moment in time for HDDs.

So far so good :) My old drive came with the computer an old seagate barracuda from 2006/2007. It ran about 12-13 watts this drive runs around 8 watts. It has basically ran around the same operating temp as my other on resource heavy game..roughly 49 celcius. I hear others say the drive is noisy. In my case I cant hear it even if i put my ear up to it. I went from a 70 max read speed to about 115 on a sata 2 (im on sata2). Yes I bought the bigger sata in case i ever upgrade the motherboard to sata 3. Since they are backward compatable might as well they are the same price. To be honest this drive is great, everything i buy from amazon comes packaged great, and i have no problems and a 5 year warranty which is probably going to last longer than my pc. Those that have problems here seriously its more of UPS or whatever shipper throwing things around most the time...and anyone that has worked in shipping knows what i mean.Note when not running heavy games..it runs about 33 celcius like my old drive..for those wondering

I repair laptop PCs for a living, and this is absolutely my "go to" hard drive for customers that don't want a solid-state drive. The Western Digital Black is simply the benchmark hard drive -- perhaps not perfect -- but quiet, efficient, trouble-free, and as fast and reliable as a mechanical 2.5" drive gets. In my experience, the Western Digital Black drives last longer than some others, and much longer than that "H" brand IBM and Lenovo like to partner with. At the prices Amazon charges and at the speed they ship them, there's truly no better choice out there.A word to the wise: Laptop hard drives typically only last between 4 and 7 years. When they go -- and I guarantee they will -- they can go suddenly, and they WILL take your data with them. No matter what kind of drive you use, KEEP A CURRENT BACKUP. You've been warned.

I know boot-up time isn't everything, but I can fire up Windows 7 Pro 64-bit in 33 seconds flat with this drive. And that INCLUDES the time it takes to type in a password. 0_0Of course my motherboard and Windows 7 deserve some of the credit - but wow ... 6Gb/s SATA isn't fooling around.This HDD is quiet too. You'll never hear it working. No chugging noises. Full disclosure - it is mounted on rubber isolators, but I'm not sure that makes a difference noise-wise.I chose Western Digital because of the five-year warranty.I decided to forgo a SSD because I felt the technology wasn't ready for business critical usage yet.

I recently purchased this hard drive to build a new computer. Build came out great, does everything I could want. However this drive is failing already, making very loud clicking noises that are common with failing disk drives and I've discovered my drive is OUT of limited warranty, where as this title clearly states it is sold under warranty.Checked my serial # on the Western Digital website, and it's out of warranty. Checked the drive with their diagnostic software and supposedly it passed, but for how long remains to be seen.Seems like somebody screwed up.

This is a great quality drive that replaced my failing internal Seagate. I was a total newbie to HD replacement, but was relieved at how easy this was. I visited the wd.com web site, where a video can be found on how to replace your internal drive. For fellow newbies, however, just remember that besides ordering this bare drive, you'll also need to order a SATA data cable and possibly a SATA power adapter cable, as well as HD mounting screws. All of these items are available here on Amazon at a small price, so order all you'll need and you'll be ready to go. The drive was easy to install and is so much quieter than the original Seagate clunker that came with the CPU tower. Plus, given the WD drive's standard 5 year warranty, all in all it's a good value too. This drive gave my system a second life and was a great, quality investment at a value price.

These installed just fine in my WIndows XP machine.I'm not positive how my current problem relates to them though. Since I installed two of these drives, programs that access my drives seem to just go to sleep for about 45-60 seconds. This seems to happen when saving a new file. Very odd. This is also happening to the 2 other drives I have in the machine & I've had them for a couple of years. As I say, this only started when I installed these 2 WD drives.*shrug* Oh well. The search for a solution continues...

Decided to buy this drive as a secondary option at first I thought it was DOA because I attached all the wires and nothing would be showing up but in the boot menu it was there so I decided it wasn't so the problem came to windows 8....it will not recognize secondary drives until you assign a letter and format it. By right clicking the computer icon click "manage" then from there "disk management" and from there it will allow you to assign a letter to your drive and format for use! All in all great product very fast for its value and storage capacity.

The Western Digital hard drive dropped right into the Dell OptiPlex 745. Prior to installing it, I had used the Windows 7 Backup and Restore tool to create a system image on a removable hard drive along with a system repair CD. Once the WD hard drive was installed, I reversed the process, and the system booted right up off the new hard drive once the process was complete. The OptiPlex 745 runs noticeably faster, and I have an extra 250 GB of hard drive space.

I am using this for my XP PROFESSIONAL system drive. When I purchased it the WARRANTY INFORMATION was for 5 years but when I registered it with WESTERN DIGITAL they noted that the warranty was for 3 years. It really makes NO difference as I would have bought it anyway. When using this with XP you have to install SPECIAL ADVANCED FORMAT SOFTWARE. This BLACK SERIES is WDs MOST RELIABLE!

The WD5003AZEX is a good drive, like other WD Black models, but as of now (11/2/2012) there is a peculiarity about the diagnostics that users should be aware of. The WDC support website offers three versions of their Data Lifeguard Diagnostic software: v5.19 published 12/2010 for use on a DOS floppy; v5.04f published 10/2008 for use on a DOS CD; and v1.24 published 7/2011 for use with Windows. However, v5.04f does NOT recognize this drive! v5.19 does recognize the drive but may be difficult or impossible to use for those whose computers have no floppy drive. Another caution: its filename DLGDiagv519.exe has too many characters to be recognizable by some DOS versions, including the version that Windows XP installs when it creates a bootable floppy disk. To work around this, rename the file to have 8 or fewer characters to the left of the decimal point, such as diagv519.exe. (I didn't try v1.24.)

5 stars for giving me no trouble at all building my computer.Pro: This is a really good hard drive for the price although it can be cheaper. 500MB is the most you'll need for a first HDD unless you buy a 2nd one for storage then the 1TB+ should be better. I don't think it's worth it to buy ssd unless you like to spend couple hundred for a couple second faster. This is fast enough.Con: I could of gotten SSD's but I don't use editing softwares or transfer super large files as a day job.
