Decided to buy this drive as a secondary option at first I thought it was DOA because I attached all the wires and nothing would be showing up but in the boot menu it was there so I decided it wasn't so the problem came to windows 8....it will not recognize secondary drives until you assign a letter and format it. By right clicking the computer icon click "manage" then from there "disk management" and from there it will allow you to assign a letter to your drive and format for use! All in all great product very fast for its value and storage capacity.

The Western Digital hard drive dropped right into the Dell OptiPlex 745. Prior to installing it, I had used the Windows 7 Backup and Restore tool to create a system image on a removable hard drive along with a system repair CD. Once the WD hard drive was installed, I reversed the process, and the system booted right up off the new hard drive once the process was complete. The OptiPlex 745 runs noticeably faster, and I have an extra 250 GB of hard drive space.

I am using this for my XP PROFESSIONAL system drive. When I purchased it the WARRANTY INFORMATION was for 5 years but when I registered it with WESTERN DIGITAL they noted that the warranty was for 3 years. It really makes NO difference as I would have bought it anyway. When using this with XP you have to install SPECIAL ADVANCED FORMAT SOFTWARE. This BLACK SERIES is WDs MOST RELIABLE!

The WD5003AZEX is a good drive, like other WD Black models, but as of now (11/2/2012) there is a peculiarity about the diagnostics that users should be aware of. The WDC support website offers three versions of their Data Lifeguard Diagnostic software: v5.19 published 12/2010 for use on a DOS floppy; v5.04f published 10/2008 for use on a DOS CD; and v1.24 published 7/2011 for use with Windows. However, v5.04f does NOT recognize this drive! v5.19 does recognize the drive but may be difficult or impossible to use for those whose computers have no floppy drive. Another caution: its filename DLGDiagv519.exe has too many characters to be recognizable by some DOS versions, including the version that Windows XP installs when it creates a bootable floppy disk. To work around this, rename the file to have 8 or fewer characters to the left of the decimal point, such as diagv519.exe. (I didn't try v1.24.)

5 stars for giving me no trouble at all building my computer.Pro: This is a really good hard drive for the price although it can be cheaper. 500MB is the most you'll need for a first HDD unless you buy a 2nd one for storage then the 1TB+ should be better. I don't think it's worth it to buy ssd unless you like to spend couple hundred for a couple second faster. This is fast enough.Con: I could of gotten SSD's but I don't use editing softwares or transfer super large files as a day job.

This unit is DOA but this is the first DOA WD Black I've ever gotten. I'm in IT and have used WD for at least 15 years. I had to deduct a star for the DOA but this is so rare I hate to mention it. Don't hesitate on WD Black.

these are the perfect Hard Drives to use for my Synology Diskstation 1812+. I've got 4 of them running in my NAS and have not had any issues.

Its fast, quiet runs pretty cool. Nothing more to add other than this is only the 2nd WD black hard drive I've ever bought but that's because I've never had to replace them, super reliable!

I could have gone for a SSD but my server only serves our home. The 5 year warranty is great to have. The 7200 RPM, and 64MB cache work very well. I would recommend this to anyone wanting a high performance system drive.

It was shipped direct from Amazon. I knew what I wanted, and the price was very fair. It was shipped promptly. The packaging could have been better. Hopefully, the drives are OK - the corner of the box was crushed.

Very easy to install. Using it to store video and other media as my first HDD is getting quite full. The 5-year guarantee is a nice touch too.

Fast and flawless.Using it in a gaming computer with an SSD system drive. Have had no trouble with the drive.I have three computers all using WD drives as they have been very reliable and work well for the purpose they are intended for.

This is the best mechanical drive that I could find. It should last a long time because of its dual bearings. Western Digital is know for great drives and I am expecting great service from this one.

Installed easily and flawlessly. I plugged it in, ran the Windows 8 CD, and everything happened as expected. I replaced a "green" drive and this one is 100X better.

Arrived with the "frustration-free" packaging. Makes it easier to get open I suppose. Bought two to replace some screeching hard drives that were only a few years old. Definitely recommend these over others. So far so good. Relatively easy to install. Contemplated over this one versus the WD green or the blue version. Am pleased I went with this model.

I just replaced old drive with this unit on A HP desktop 5100 works great FAST SUPER FAST and makes no noise at all.Would recommend this product to anyone with a old desktop to give it new life.
