I bought 2 of these in late 2006 to replace a 300GB Western Digital external drive that had crashed. I figured if I got 2 of these I would have some redundancy in case one failed. Within 2 years or so, both of these drives did indeed fail. While I did not lose any super important files because I was paranoid and had all my financial records and pictures backed up in multiple places, I was stung both times when these things crashed, as you almost always have at least a few files that have not been backed up yet when the you-know-what hits the fan. Well, I expected more than 2 years of life from these things, so I am very disappointed. One started making strange noises that provided semi-ample notice that something was about to go wrong, while the other one was ostensibly working fine and was suddenly toast one day. Suffice to say I've had enough fun with Western Digital and will be purchasing my drives from other manufacturers in the future.

I bought the WD "My Book" external hard drive because it was on sale and it had SO MUCH memory. I didn't expect the thing to go buggy on me right away. The first thing WD's "My Book" did was to "drop" itself from my PC. It was always wandering off somewhere where my OS couldn't find it. I kept on having to disconnect it and connect it just to use it. The drive has decided - after these many weeks of losing itself in the ether - to stick around. How long will it stay? That's impossible to say."My Book" (when its working) is noisy. It's as if the drive wants to be a turbojet when it grows up. It does get quiet between its tantrums, however, which is, I suppose, a redeeming quality. In addition, "My Book" has a nasty tendency to embed itself so deeply into the inner workings its host PC that the user can hardly do anything without it "spinning up." Even surfing the net can be negatively impacted by "My Book." Files are often directed without the user's volition or knowledge to this blue-eyed cyclops. Considering the data retrieval times associated with the drive, depositing critical files in the beastie is not a good thing.WD's "My Book" can be best described as a noisy vampiric tumor. It invades its PC host and degrades its performance. Still want all that memory?

I bought two of these. After a year and a half of operation, one is dead, and the other is clearly dying, as more and more bad sectors are cropping up. One failure I could write off as a fluke. But two - plus all the other lousy reviews here - convince me that this is just a flimsy product. Save yourself the trouble and buy something more robust.

Within one year of purchasing this product it crashed twice. The drive could not be read. Was able to reformat and drive seemed ok. One year later drive crashed again, but this time could hear the "click of death" and now the drive will not function at all. Will never buy Western Digital again, stick with Maxtor. Didn't purchase this drive from Amazon, but wanted to share problems since they seem to be a common occurrence with these drives.

I have really enjoyed My Book Essentials from Western Digital. The extra 500 MB's on the External Hard Drive has saved my neck by allowing me to move Pics, Music, Short Movie Clips, Documents etc.... from my PC's Hard Drive to "My Book Essentials 500 MB External Hard Drive." My PC's memory was just about maxed out and My Book Essentials allowed me to free-up all this Extra Space from my PC's hard Drive. It's just about like having a Brand New computer.Thank You !!! Western digital. You Rock !!!PS-The Shipping/Handling and Delivery was SUPERB. I had the My Book Essentials in about 3-4 days. I was expecting it in 2-3 weeks.Keep It Up Western Digital;... I purchased this drive last year and used it to store my Time Machine backups. It was quiet and attractive looking and served the purpose well. However, it just broke down a mere 2 months out of warranty. Classic. The hard drive had an easy life too, so this is totally unacceptable to me.When I told a friend of mine about the incident, he reported that he has had two of these break prematurely on him as well.

I have over 10,000 mp3 files (which were already backed up) on the unit. One day, I used Explorer to search for a mp3 by title, and the drive hangs up and the Explorer just gives me a slow progress bar. I click around and the drive gets itself lost. I rebooted and it was fine...until I tried a search. Same thing. The drive hangs up. I can't access the drive. I can't turn it off and on again unless I reboot the computer.I rebooted, and transferred all of my unbacked-up files to another external drive (Seagate) which worked fine as I was using that drive for storing files I don't often use as well as some backups.Fortunately, it was still working enough to save everything before I decided to make it into a permanent doorstop.I'm buying another brand. No more Western Digital.

I bought this drive a week ago for $110 and think it's a great value. At $0.22/gig, it's relatively cheap storage, although still nowhere in the ballpark of home-burned DVDs, where a 4.7 gig disc costs approximately $0.25 per piece (or about $0.05/gig). Of course, the home-burned DVDs are not reliable for long-term storage and aren't always practical for archieving media that you want instant access to. I'm backing up everything on both formats (DVD and my new WD external HDD). Truly critical media (wedding photos, video of baby's first steps, etc.) are backed up on duplicate DVD's and/or my computer's main internal hard drive. Neither format (DVD or HDD) is going to last forever, but hopefully my redundancy will prevent me from loosing any media. As for the drive itself, I'm very happy with its performance. It runs quietly, other than the sweet creaky/frog/cricket sound of any HDD. It was 100% plug-and-play on my Windows XP (SP2) home system. It took me maybe 45 seconds from the time I plugged it in until I was writing data. I chose not to install the optional Google software yet. Until I upgrade around the holidays, my system is a dinosaur and I don't want to give up any computing power for background indexing.Speed would probably be my only criticism at this point. If you're reading or writing a lot of data at once, it can drag using USB 2.0. I haven't clocked it with any precision, but I'd estimate a write speed of about 30-50 gig/hour - with me using other applications while it writes in the background. I looked into other drives with firewire, eSATA, etc., but for my purposes, price was more important than speed. I'm not dumping huge quantities of data at once, and once it's on there, it's for archieving purposes, so I don't need to be accessing it regularly. When it fills up, I'll buy another. Those who gave this HDD bad marks either had unrealistic expectations (if you want more than USB 2.0 speed, be prepared to pay 50-100% more) or had this drive fail on them. Eventually, if my drive fails (I should say when, as no HDD lasts forever), I'll be unhappy too, but I haven't owned this drive long enough to comment on its long-term reliability relative to other HDD's out there. It's not "blazing fast" and it won't last forever (nothing will, even magnetic tape, which I consider the best long-term storage media, but who wants to deal with tape?!). But if you're looking for a cheap and extremely easy backup solution, I would highly recommend this drive!Joe Sirbak

This is the best hard drive I've ever had. It's solidly built, runs completely silently, runs cool, and is at a fantastic cost. I've owned dozens of hard drives through the years and this one is hands down my favorite from my favorite company ever. I bought it over a year ago and it still is perfect. Some things to note however to get the best out of this device.1) As soon as you get it format it in NTFS using either My Computer>Right Click>Format>NTFS in Windows or if using a Gnome Edition of Linux such as Ubuntu (like myself) open terminal and type 'sudo gpart'. This allows you to store files over 2GB on it such as your DvD ISO backups or back ups of your games.2) Buy a refurbished or used one. New this product is $300. You can find it all day long on Amazon between $60 and $90 cutting the cost down to almost 1/6 on a good day.3) Some other customers have complained about this product breaking after prolonged use. This device does have a limited lifespan with write usage. This being said try to put data on it that you want to back up and then set it to 'read only'. This will save you some headaches in the future. It's meant to be a backup drive after all and not one for installing applications on.

I purchased the Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 320GB External Hard Drive this week, and within 15 minutes, it was up and running providing more storage for my system. It really was as simple as unpacking, plugging in the included USB cable, plugging in the power, and that's it. The drive automatically powers on and off with your computer, or you can alternatively shut it down manually using the button on the front. When you first attach the drive, XP will see that there is an autostart on it, and prompt you to run some programs. The Essential version comes with several Google tools (desktop, toolbar, picasa), and the Western Digital Backup utility. You can choose to install these, or ignore them for the time being (I ignored them since I already have the Google tools that I want to use). The first thing I did was copy the WD Backup Utility off of the drive, then format the entire thing as an NTFS file system. FAT32 has space limitations, so if you want to take full advantage of the drive without partitioning, NTFS is the way to go.My recommendation is to do a non-quick format, only if you have the time. If you want to start using the drive immediately, quick format will do, and usually with a fresh drive, full format is not especially necessary.Just like many hard drives, there are a couple performance settings that you may want to tweak. Go into the drive properties in the XP device manager, and turn on the Performance setting. This allows write caching to the drive, and will improve the performance, but it does mean that if you want to disconnect the drive, you have to use the Safe Remove in XP. Personally, I always opt for performance option, because I don't plan to ever remove the drive. The Essential Edition has one green ring on the front of the "book", which will flash on heavy disk activity, letting you know that something is going on. Otherwise, it just stays green letting you know the drive is powered on.Like many disk drives, the unit will stop spinning after lack of activity, to save power. It's pretty fast though, so when you need to use it again, it spins right up (audibly).Differing from the more expensive edition, this one does not have FireWire, only USB 2.0. It also lacks the second green ring on the front which is a capacity meter. Personally, I don't need the extra ring showing capacity, and USB 2.0 works fine for me, so the price difference was not worth going for the more expensive edition.Form Factor is pretty slick, it looks like a book on your shelf, albeit, a black plastic book with a green light ring on the front. The top looks like a punch card, and vents the head from the drive. Watch for dust accumulation inside the device (use an air blower to clean it now and then). All in all, it's a very quiet and unobtrusive drive, that was very easy to install, and runs like you would expect a Western Digital to run. An excellent purchase.

Not only does this external hard drive look great on my desk it add a ton of storage to my system, allowing me to do backups on a regular basis without issue and allowing me to keep movies and other files that don't need to be on my main PC accessible from a hard drive that doesn't allows need to be running. The large ring lights up a nice mild green letting you know the device is on. In the center of that ring is a large button that you use to turn your external hard drive on and off without having to unplug it (this has to be one of the best features). I can leave it hooked to my computer and only turn it on when I need it to be on. This will save those of you out there who like to leave your home PC running all the time. You don't have to worry about this hard drive being subject to crashing due to being on all the time and don't have to hassle with unplugging it.Western Digital makes pretty good hard drives and they last a long time without issue. I got a heck of a deal on mine from a friend but was quite pleased with all the features it turned out to have. Like the built in backup utility as well as the fact all you have to do it hook up 2 wires and it's ready to run (power and USB). Plus the fact that it looks good on my desk, looks like a black hard case book. Doesn't attract more attention to it self like other externals on the market do. Transfers seem to be rather fast as well.

I use this device to backup both my laptops and have never had any problems with it. I've had it for around two years now (I don't like to write reviews until I've had some experience with a product.)I like that the drive can be easily disconnected from the power and data cables. Size and form-factor are great for my needs. The unit stays in a sleep-state when it is powered but not connected to a PC. It wakes up instantly when a data connection is sensed / plugged in.The only thing I haven't been able to do reliably is connect it directly to my router for wireless access but that isn't a big deal to me because I worry about the security of using it that way (even though I keep my wireless network secure, there will always be a hacker smarter than me...).

Still going strong - I was an "early adopter" of the MyBook Premium, and it was up and running quickly. After plugging it in (if Autoplay is enabled) it will run its preinstalled script and start the setup process. It comes bundled with Mac/PC proggies and drivers, but if you accidentally wipe everything, you can redownload them all from the WD site simply by providing the product SN.I've stopped using the Firewire Port - it was nice that they bundled a cable, but the transfers were too flaky - not sure if the problem was on their end or my pc's, but my other PC doesn't have FW for me to check out.Anyhow, with nothing installed, and USB, it's still plug and play and going strong after two years. Slow, yes - it's USB, which eats up CPU, versus Firewire, which does not - I'd prefer the firewire, but it would frequently be dysfunctional on my PC, requiring a reboot.I make a lot of use of the "button manager" to turn the device on and off (it's software driven), which may be the culprit behind the FW problems, I'd either have to go into hardware manager and "rescan" or simply reboot if I powered it down. That's not the case with USB tho. The button manager isn't needed tho - it's fully functional (just can't be powered off by pushing a button). Shutting the PC down will shut it down at the same time, button manager or not.All that angst aside, I dropped the (faster for big transfers) FW for the USB, and it's working just fine. No fan means it's quiet. It does get warm, but not hot.My other complaint is the black paint is "oily finger" unfriendly. My fingerprints are "etched" onto it now.Trivial, but the cooling vents are actually cut in morse code (dots and dashes, with spaces) for something (I've not decoded it yet, lol). This is true for all the MyBook series.Bottom line: It's still running fine after nearly 7x24 usage, for 2 years.

I had this hard drive for about a year in a half. It had pretty much all my stuff on it. Sadly I didn't back most of my stuff up, and next thing you know, it died. It started making 3 clicking noises, then 3 more clicking noises. It would be recognized by my computer but basically the drive couldn't be read. I'm not sure if the data is still there but I would have to pay $1700 to send it out to drive savers which is not worth the money as of right now. When this drive worked for me, it was really good, but I have to give it 1 star because of how quickly it failed after buying it.Moral of the story, only buy this if you plan on rarely using it for backups and other things, because this drive WILL fail in a certain amount of time.

i believe these external cases are some of the worse things you could put a hard drive in. i dismounted the drive from the enclosure and mounted it internally in the pc drivebays. upon checking the smart info there was a registered maximum temperature of 97 degrees celcius. luckily the drive registerd more than 2 years of power-on time with zero relocated sectors or other critical smart info. Good drive I suppose, bad enclosure.

I'm highly disappointed with the performance of this drive. Its not even a year old in use and it seems to have failed on me. I did hear about excellent reviews when i bought this drive, but this practically fails to live up to its reputation. WD should claim better responsibility for such mechanical hazards than just giving their customers $15 off for the next purchase of $150. I would NEVER buy another WD drive after this bitter and sorrowful experience of possibly losing all my data.I don't think i can recommend this brand or drive to any of my tech savvy friends as well. WD needs to also consider compensating for data recovery which is a roaring business these days, thanks to WD drives that quit on people. I wish we never depended on machines so much.I didn't hope this would have lasted even 5 years, but it quit working just after 1 year is unacceptable. Please do check out reviews on other online site (which i verified) before making a final decision to go with WD.

I bought this drive as part of a package when I upgraded my system a few months ago so I really did not do a great deal of research on this component. And, based on a number of the reviews here I probably would have opted for another manufacturer. While it is true in the three months I've used the WD My Book Essential 250gb I haven't encountered any major system *problems* with it, there have been a few relatively minor annoyances. The limited documentation that accompanies the drive indicates that it is Vista Certified but I think Vista compatible would serve as a more accurate description. It appears all of the executables are nearly two years old and I can't see where they have been revised. The HTML available documentation for the drive diagnostic modules does not specifically refer to Vista. Whenever one reboots, it tends to take an uncomfortably long time for the system to come up, and while this is not a major issue for me, it can be disconcerting. This drive is genuinely plug and play, with all pertinent software pre-installed on the Drive. During the set up process, the user is offered the option to reformat to NTFS. I use automated back-up via Norton 360 and that actually results in the largest complaint I have about the HD itself. Regardless of settings in windows, upon completion of the backup, the system will not revert to sleep mode but rather sits in locked mode. Since I do not back up each day, even that is a minor inconvenience for me.HOWEVER, and there always seems to be one, the warranty practices of Western Digital are unconscionable. I've had this drive three months and although it is represented to be warranted for one year, WD starts the clock as of the production date rather than the end user's purchase date and the only option offered is a three year extension at additional cost.Frankly, if the drive fails after the warranty period I would prefer to absorb the loss and purchase a replacement from a more consumer oriented source.

ADDENDUM: We have four of these - the one holding my backup of photography and other important items simply DIED. The head crashed onto the disk, making it impossible to retrieve any data. YES I know I should have had TWO backups of everything, and now I do. But I've lost a lot of precious files. Also, it was the NEWEST one of these which died!!! The older ones are still working. I have switched to Seagate Free Agent PRO drives at the suggestion of the company I had trying to recover my data. These drives are cheaper AND offer automatic backups! So, if I could, I'd change the stars here to ONE. And warn everyone, don't rely on any ONE drive for a backup if you have files you really don't want to lose. I'm still using the My Books we have, but have duplicated the files onto the Seagates. This way if any one drive dies, I'll still have my files elsewhere. A HARD LESSON LEARNED. Here is my original review unchanged:Like another reviewer, this is my third "My Book" usb drive. For my machines, I just plug in and go. My husband's machine is a server, and he had to do some messing around with it to get it to work with his machine, but he's one of those people who are obsessed with screwing around with everything on a computer, so my guess is he's atypical. Even so, it works fine for him, too.My only problem is that I can't seem to map to it from other machines on the network, so retrieving files is at times a bit tedious as I copy them to an accessible internal drive for transfer. Even with this, though, I love the 'Book". They're quiet, not REALLY fast but that's to be expected with USB, and quite stable.

I wanted to reiterate what the other reviewers about this drive suddenly failing after a year. I only powered up this drive once every two weeks for maybe an hour at a time, to back up my files, and I've only owned it for a little more then a year. The other day, I came into my room and it smelled of something burning. I finally traced it to the hard drive where the green light was blinking on and off intermittently. Mind you, the hard drive was OFF. Somehow the power supply shorted and the connection between the power supply plug where it enters the hard drive was extremely hot; when I touched it, I thought I'd burned myself, it was so hot. I was gone all day, so I have no idea how long it was sitting there just burning away. The drive is dead, WD will not do anything about it since their warranty started almost FOUR MONTHS before I had actually purchased it since it is from the date of manufacture. What a TERRIBLE, AWFUL, FRAUDULENT rip off. They have lost me as a customer. They shouldn't be allowed to mark the drive with a manufacturing date and then spend the time to ship it to a store where it sits in the stock room or warehouse for an unknown amount of time before it makes it to the shelf. The REAL warranty, therefore is only six to eight months. Unacceptable. They will not take responsibility. Also unacceptable. A lot of people are reporting failure after only a year of use, including burning of the drive. I find that awfully suspicious? Don't you?You have lost me as a customer!Do not purchase!

Western Digital's 500 GB external HD fails to function now. We've had it for about two years. It has been used on XP and Vista machines. As of two weeks ago, the WD 500 is not recognized on any of the machines. We're read about work-arounds, but they don't work. We've checked WD's website for new drivers or patches. Nothing is available. Worse yet, Western Digital doesn't even reply when they were contacted.I know we won't buy any Western Digital product in the future. I suggest that you avoid buying this 500GB Ext. HD. Save your money. In a way, the failed WD Drive was a blessing! It was hurtful to know that they didn't care about their product and their customer's needs. But, that pain lead us to Carbonite.com where we do backups (no size limitations) for $50/year. Yeah... far less than an external HD!
