Like others have reported from Amazon, this drive is great, but it appears that there are problems with their OEM. I installed this drive in my IMAC. Everything restored beautifully, and I instantly noticed how much faster it was than the stock Seagate that was installed in the computer initially with a smaller buffer.Unfortunately, I also noticed a slight "click" about every 4-5 seconds coming from the computer that was never there before. At idle, the hard drive should not be making any noise, so I contacted WD via email, and they told me to unhook the drive and see if the problem remained. Not being able to do that on the Imac, they told me to back everything up immediately and return the drive.So, great drive, not so great when it takes 1 1/2 days to install and restore when you get a bad drive. I have used Amazon for years and never had to send a faulty item back. Still a great return policy, just a pain in the you know what.

So after reading all the other reviews about the bad packaging I expected the worst packaging ever. This drive actually came in a padded box (with a lot of rubber foam) then that box was put into an Amazon.com shipping box with the air bags stuffed in there so packing was actually better than, uhm.. that egg store.Popped the drive in with cables I already had because that is what OEM is - just the drive - and it started up fine. I replaced a 2 disk Raid-0 array with this single drive and performance is pretty much the same which is awesome for a single drive.With Seagate quality totally going through the floor, I am glad to see that WD is coming back strong with good reliable performance drives.I have an Antec Solo case, which is pretty much silent, so I can hear any type of excess drive noise which this thing does not have.

Великолепно

I have used this harddrive for over a month now in a USB/eSATA enclosure and have had no problems with it. Harddrive partitioned easily and does just what it should.I did choose this one over Western Digital's "Green" 1TB drive, but I do not know if there would be a noticeable performance difference between the two or not.Would definitely purchase again!

I will start by advising that if you are purchasing an OEM drive, choose a vendor other than Amazon. Allow me to describe the packaging they used: drive in anti-static bag placed on bottom of box, air-filled bag-type cushioning placed loosely on top of drive. The drive was therefore totally unprotected on the bottom side, and the wear on the anti-static bag showed it. In what alternate dimension is this an acceptable means of protecting a hard drive? They're supposed to be protected from vibration. Duh!As for the drive itself, it seems to be a quality piece. It seems to have survived Amazon's shipment abuse test, though only time will tell if its lifespan was shortened any. The drive is louder than the WD 3200AAKS-75SBA0 drive that shipped with my system. That's not a major concern to me though.It's a shame I cannot assign a rating to this experience with Amazon, as that would be zero stars. The four stars are for the product only. Buy it somewhere else!

This is a sensational drive. It is FAST, and it is quiet. It came very well packaged (in spite of what some of the other reviewers have noted) so that it could not have sustained any damage during shipment. The shipping from Amazon was (as always) unbelievably fast. I used this drive to replace my old boot drive, so I put it in the computer and then installed Windows Vista 64-bit on it without any difficulties. The drive works flawlessly, and I could not be any more pleased. Buy it!!!

I'm not one for specs, but I will tell you it works as advertised. Vista and Windows 7 give this a 5.9 Index Rating. (Not that this is the ruler to measure all products by.)

Always have trusted Wester Digital hard drives over the competing manufacturers. I have never yet had a single WD drive fail on me, and I have purchased dozens of them over the years. Some of the older ones are still being used daily.I primarily work in video production, and these drives handle everything I throw at it in an edit. The new "Black" designation on these drives brings higher speeds and a larger cache. What's not to love?I recently bought 4 of these to use in a RAID 5 configuration and so far there isn't a huge difference over the older drives (also WD, but fairly recent purchases themselves). Mainly I needed more storage, but I'm seeing some speed gains as well.

I installed this 1tb hard drive in my desktop computer with zero problems. Vista picked it up and added it to the configuration, and I formated it into 2 sections. I've had it running for many months now, and had zero problems. I've always preferred Western Digital Drives, and I'm a computer consultant who has had to deal with many different brand drives over the past 15 years.

Overall, I am very happy with my purchase and I would recommend this drive to anyone. Hard drive arrived "bare" with no rails or screws in an anti-static bag, you will need to supply your own.Hard drive is a lot faster than Western Digital's Green drives, runs hotter, and is a lot noisier. However, the payoff for the speed is worth it. Installed it as the boot drive in a 2.80GHZ (Early 2008) Mac Pro Quad, 12GB ram, with a total of 4 internal hard drives.

I remember when a 10MB drive was huge and you used to calculate price per Meg to find the best priced model. I've used many different hard drive manufacturers but I've always favored WD drives. I've never had a failure with them. Before I bought this model, I read the reviews and Vista installation tips. Install and configuration went easily after reading the tips. Works great, quiet and no problems. My only disappointment is that it didn't come with a SATA cable but I guess that is to be expected with an OEM model.

WD makes great internal drives, very quiet and fast. I got one of their external drives and it was terrible. It usually won't even mount. I don't know what people are talking about being loud I can't even hear it in my PowerMac G5. Like others have said it must be the bay in your computer that is causing the noise. I am very pleased with it.

I'm usually the Newegg buyer. But this time, Amazon has done it again. I bought a week ago and it came in in perfect condition. Packaging was great. IMHO, it's much better than Newegg. Two separate thick foam smashed together with the Hard drive in between. Past experiences with Newegg left me with DOAs. My computer recognize the 640Gb. So it's good and a recommended buy. Will buy from Amazon again!!--Ps: I'm not hatin' on Newegg...I still buy stuff there.

Part of a new high-end build. Using drive for dual booting Mint 7 (linux) & Windows 7 RC. Very fast system with no drama. Will put boot partition on SSD when prices go down; this WD is a keeper & will get another if I see a deal.

This was a great deal. I plan to buy more of these. I love the fact that i can get this size of storage for around 100 dollars. My only complaint which is the same as others is the packaging. I know it is an OEM product. I don't need a pretty box but they could have at least put some packaging peanuts in there! When i order a book it comes more secure then this. I bet the drive bounced around quite a bit in shipping. It seems fine, but i can see a serious problem if the mail man dropped the small box it came in. I would pay the extra dollar that it would cost to put some bubble wrap in there if they offered it.

bought this hard disk it runs quite and smoothly but it's slow not fast windows 7 rating gave it 6 all my other pc components got 7.9 which is the maximum but it doesn't do justice to the other pc components it like you have a firrari car but you have to run in a heavy traffic so you won't run that fast so nice for the capacity and the price don't buy the green one it's even not as fast as this one and gets alot of disk errors..If you have any questions contact me through amazon ;)

I've been a Seagate user forever, but have been disturbed by some of the reports of failures for their large drives. Decided to switch to WD, the Caviar "Black". Disk installed easily. Performed full format, transferred a couple of hundred Gig, and have been using the disk for about 3 weeks. No problems. This is also a very fast disk -- data write tests show a write speed of 70-75 MBytes/sec, when transferring information from memory (as opposed to disk-to-disk, when bus interactions can have a larger impact). The Western Digital is a good 12-15% faster than my other disks.Sale price was very good ($90). While not the highest capacity disk, the trade-off for speed and perceived reliability seems to be worth it!

I recently received WD1001FALS Hard Drive."There was very little protection"Packaging was unacceptable.I place many orders with amazon,I neverhad this happen before. Whats up!!!!!!packaging consisted of two bladder bagswhich had deflated enroute.

I use computers for a living and buy a lot of drives. In my opinion, Western Digital currently makes the best, problem-free hard drives, from speedy VelociRaptors to green drives to black drives which are fast (but not as fast as VelociRaptors) and very well priced. This drive is excellent for the money.However, I recently bought a 1TB drive (mid July 2009) and the packaging was terrible. I was surprised that the drive still worked. See photo I am uploading.

This is the second drive. The first drive would only format half. Figured it was one of the platters inside wasn't working. However, Amazon.com came through and I did receive a new replacement in a timely fashion. The way the drives were package. I am surprised that the second drive worked, but it does. The price is unbeatable.

Amazon is shipping out this hard drive with virtually no packaging. My card board box was bent and few air penuts were punctured. I have been a long time Amazon customer but have never seen such sloppy work from Amazon. Highly disappointed. Do not buy this drive from Amazon.

This drive works great and best yet, it didn't die (infant mortality) like the previous drive (factory installed Samsung) did after only six hours. I've had other WD drives and they've been spinning error free for several years.

My husband and son have used Western Digital in the past and have the best results with them. My husband wanted to have a second hard drive for backup for work and personal use. This has worked beautifully.

I would recommend slicing it into 3 partitions. If fragmented the Terabyte can become unstable. Otherwise it works perfect. Buy this , if upgrading or installing it in a new machine - perfect for mass storage . Its a plus that it is SATA - quite fast

Rec'd the unit very fast thanks to Prime shipping - and the packaging was not half as bad as some of the other reviewers have discussed. Please remember though that this is an OEM unit - so no cables, instructions or anything. It also does NOT ship a unit with a legacy power connector (despite WD's instructions to the contrary) so be sure to have a serial ATA signal cable as well as a SATA power cable connector on-hand if you expect to use it.Installation as with most HDD's is simple enough - the Western Digital site gives you all the information you'll need if you are so inclined. Got to admit - it is a bit overwhelming to have this much storage even when i am dealing with my video files. I will likely buy a second!
