+Мало потребляет электроэнергии(по заверениям WD - в два раза меньше обычных винтов).
+хорошее соотношение мегабайтов к рублям. - - -Довольно тормоз(5400 оборотов). Однако, для файлопомойки это не существенно.
-Конкретно мой экземпляр с первых же дней работы отличился пощелкиванием головок, которое ввело меня в ужас. См в коментарии

- + Достаточно тихий, не сильно греется во внешнем боксе без вентилятора, хорошая скорость при последовательном чтении, 32MB кэш, хорошее состояние магнитного покрытия.

This review comes very late but it still doesn't change the fact that this hard drive is utterly useless. This item was purchased to serve as a slave in April 2010. It performed well doing the few tasks that I required of it, then one horrible day in July 2010 it went BYE BYE. That was a horrible experience for me and I have not purchased a WD device since. I am in need of a new HD now as the Master seems to failing. I am wondering now if I should try WD now. After all 2 yrs is a long time right????

I used this drive for a year. And all I can say is that while it offers up a lot of space it is a very slow drive when it locks up under realtime I/O.My acid test for the drive was using it for an FTP server daemon, an OFFsystem cache and eMule filesharing. Folks, there's nothing like having the drive periodically lock up as it tries to find sectors. Since all of the above software involves lots of disk access the desktop's overall response time dwindled to a game of waiting. When compared to my old 80GB drive that it replaced the abysmal performance wasn't worth the wait for all of that network-shared space.At the beginning of the month I installed a Seagate Barracuda 7200 1.5 TB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive to replace it. The performance difference is amazing! Right now I'm running eMule and there is no latency whatsoever. I do have it running with a SATA-to-IDE adapter and it turns out that the adapter was not the problem. My twin Western Digital WD Elements 1.5 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drives (the ones in the metal, not plastic, cases) are much more reliable and speedy than this!Anyway, it took a few days but I backed up, wiped and removed the WD from my desktop (no data on it now short of random bits from the drive-wiping crypto). I may offer it for sale...cheap (maybe $50 just to take the edge off of the price of the Seagate) in case anyone is up for some some self-induced masochism! Out of all the hard drives I have, this one is the worst one that I had the displeasure of using. Do check out the Seagate above if you want some decent data access. And it's cheaper, too! :-)Not to knock on WD but I will: They do have decent hard drives. Too bad that this ain't one of 'em!EDIT: While linking to other parts for this review it turns out that I actually used the drive from December 2009 through the end of June 2010. It's so slow that it made me think I used it longer than I actually had it! Now that's bad! And I'm resisting the urge to use Anne Robinson's catchphrase.

As of 20 Jan 2010, Amazon is using inadequate packaging (see photo) for this hard drive "Western Digital 1.5 TB Caviar Green SATA Intellipower 32 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive WD15EADS". Instead of using some sort of all encompassing, form adapting beads i.e. popcorn or robust energy absorbing pre form, Amazon is using a single layer (see photo) cardboard cutout forms that were torn (see photo) on arrival. Hence, did not keep the "high density" fragile item secure in transit.With just two cardboard hoops (see photo), the hard drive had a ~? inch gap (see photo) about the drive perimeter. Also, the top and bottom of the hard drive box was without any substantive padding and had a ? gap top to bottom. The insertion tab portion of the cut out hoop form was also dislodged from it holding slots (see photo).Since this drive was not secure during transit and potentially exposed to high G loads, those in excess of the manufacturers recommend limits along with handing and shipping procedures, I chose not to take a chance with this item and returned the product to Amazon. Reason being, high G loads in transit can and do lead to rapid premature failure and why the hard drive is conspicuously labeled "Fragile Handle With Care" by the manufacture.Amazon use to be able to properly ship items of this nature. Since then, Amazon has unwisely changed their method of packing for one that does not meet all of the same objects obtains by the previous method. If the previous method, packaging popcorn, drew too many complaints or was too expensive, then at minimum the replacement solution should have been as good if not better than the last.In short, whatever change Amazon elects to make with their packaging method should always be driven as a "value added alteration" as perceived by the customer. Customers returning items to Amazon, due to insufficient packaging, is not "value added".Amazon, as a form of respect to it's customer, has the responsibility to mitigate and reduce risk of damage to a product and for that product to remain secure during transit to it's final destination. What occurred in this incident was a display of dysfunctional processes, lack of over sight, and an example of what not do.Minus 1.00 for Amazon approving this method of packaging.Minus 1.00 for not securing a dense fragile item for shipping.Minus 1.00 for changing a shipping method that worked for one that does not.Minus 1.00 for needlessly wasting my time and having to return an item.

I purchased this product for use with a Moxi DVR Moxi 2-Tuner 500GB HD Digital Recorder. Because it shuts down after 45 minutes and will not wake up without using the power button on the Rosewill RX-358-S SLV enclosure, it is not a prefered option for a DVR. It can be used by scheduling garbage recordings to fill in the gaps in the recording schedule, thus preventing it from shutting down, but this is a hassle. I am using mine to record marathons, and swapping in a more suitable drive for other timer recordings.The Samsung 1.5TB EcoGreen Samsung 1.5 TB SATA 5400 RPM Hard Drive is this other drive. So far, the EcoGreen has gone various idle intervals up to 12 hours without shutting down, or at least it wakes up on its own after shutting down. I can't be sure which.Considering that the 500GB WD My DVR Expander Western Digital My DVR Expander 500 GB eSATA Desktop External Hard Drive WDG1S5000VN is currently $121.95 (I bought mine for $69.99) and the WD 1TB My DVR Expander Western Digital My DVR Expander 1 TB eSATA Desktop External Hard Drive WDG1S10000VN (Black) is unavailable indefinitely, the combination of the Rosewill enclosure at $49.99 and either the 1.5TB Caviar Green (acceptable with caveats) or 1.5TB EcoGreen (better option), even at their common prices of $109.99, for a total cost for enclosure plus drive of $159.98, are good choices, at least for the Moxi. Note the enclosure can be reused when archive drive is full, and shutting down after 45 minutes idle should not be an issue once drive is full and only being used for storing/viewing.Format speeds: WD Caviar Green 350 minutes, Samsung EcoGreen 298 minutesFormated capacity: Both 1,500,291,039,232 bytes with Windows XP Pro, but Western Digital has 8MB of unformatted space.Samsung was cooler to the touch after formatting.Western Digital is quieter, especially when fast forwarding through a recording being played while a recording is in progress.The Western Digital is the only drive I have attached to the Moxi that triggered the message "Unsupported Drive", but it worked better than either the 2TB Toshiba PH3200U-1EXB or the 1TB Hitachi Deskstar (7200 RPM/155 minutes format time), each of which shut down after just 30 minutes.

Install went relatively smooth using the Acronis software I downloaded from the Western Digital site. At first I had some trouble with the cable I purchased from CiTi (through Amazon) [[ASIN:B0001Y8UI4 StarTech.com 18IN SATA HARD DRIVE CABLE ( SATA18RA1 )]. The system did not recognize the drive. To see if the cable was the problem I used the DVD/CD cable temporarily. That worked. Once the drive was recognized I could install the Acronis software (you need at least one WD drive in your system for it to install). I added the new drive to the system and then cloned my old drive. The cloning took about an hour (225 GB). After cloning the Acronis software lets you shut down the system and change cabling, etc. That was handy because I could reuse the cable from my old drive on my new drive and make the new drive primary. Of course I put the DVD SATA cable back. Until I get a new cable my old drive is offline.Note - the cable's right angle connector was backwards for the position of the drive in the bay. I could not have closed the cover due to the way it had to be connected so it was useless anyway. I've been up and running for just an hour now - I gave 4 stars because I kind of suspected that getting the right SATA cable was a crap shoot and was sorry to discover that this was indeed the case.

As many others have pointed out, the packaging was woefully inadequate (no padding).Note: I was using the drive in a WHS (Windows Home Server) machine - which I only just now realized is not supported by Western Digital, because WHS is based on Windows Server 2003, which is a *server*, not a desktop OS.I would still consider WHS a consumer product that is distinct from a heavy-use business environment, however.Note that WHS does not use RAID, but has its own, software-based duplication mechanism, and the server hardware manufacturer's instructions do not require server hard drives (I'm using an HP MediaSmart EX487).The drive initially worked without problems, until it started failing without prior warning after less than 4 months.The troubling thing was that there was no advance warning: WHS diagnostics did not report anything wrong with the drive, even after problems started. It seems that the drive's built-in SMART diagnostics happily continued to reported that everything was OK, which was obviously not the case.(Specifically, WHS reported data-integrity problems, and the system event log was full of file-system corruption errors. Trying to run chkdsk failed. Eventually, I removed the drive, connected it to a Windows 7 system and was able to complete a run of chkdsk with a surface scan, which detected many file-system errors and bad clusters.)I will go for a warranty replacement, although the problem with that is that I will get a specimen of the same model, which - based on its useless SMART diagnostics - I have little faith in.WD's telephone-based customer support will not accommodate requests for a different model. (They do have what they call a customer loyalty program on their website, where you can get a discount on *new, different* drives if you have an in-warranty drive; even with the discount, however, it appears that the prices are higher than elsewhere online.)

I bought this drive in December 2009 because of the many positive reviews, and it completely failed after 6 months of minor use. The Western Digital diagnostic tool revealed that there were so many media errors that it could not continue. Chkdsk listed thousands of read failures before I gave up and sent it for RMA.The RMA instructions on the WD site listed detailed packing instructions, and it occurred to me that the problem might be how these bulk drives are handled once they arrive at Amazon's warehouse. They probably arrive from WD, properly packed and padded. Once there however, it could be anyone unpacking these drives and simply throwing each onto a shelf. Then an order comes in and someone else picks these up, throws each into an Amazon box with a few bubble pillows, something the RMA instruction specifically say would void your warranty.Imagine the thrashing as the drive goes through the conveyor belts, the journey on the various trucks, the loading and unloading, and the final thud as it lands on your door step.No wonder there are so many positive reviews, together with the numerous incidents of the drive failing after just a few months. And this seems to be same with other brands.Perhaps that's why Seagate has a 5 year warranty of their retail drive but a 3 year warranty on the same bulk drive.Amazon should learn how to pack the drives from the WD RMA instructions!

These hard drives are ideal for those needing 2 to 4 drives in their computer, but do not want the high cost or compatability issues associated with hard drives over 1 TB in size. These are ideal for the Dell Precision series using RAID 0 or 1, giving the user as much as 3TB of continous storage space or 1.5TB of "Mirrored" storage (RAID 1). Having 4 low-cost high cpacity drives also allows for both Windows XP/7 and Linux Redhat or Ubuntu to reserve an entire drive as a "Fat32" storage volume, a storage format understood by all the major O.S. platforms. With 32MB of cache and a SATA connection, these drives load files quickly and are very quiet.

I run 4x of these guys in my Drobo USB ... they spin quiet and cool and are fairly decent on power draw near as I can tell. They've been ultra-reliable and ultra-fast. Excellent stuff.

I think this drive is functioning well and has to this point given great service. Problem is that its the second drive. I had to return the first one as it was not functioning correctly after being shipped in Amazons 'hassle free' packaging.That packaging consisted of simply 2 of the LARGE single chamber air filled bubble wrap packs and a OPENED standard static free plastic baggie. Totally unacceptable shipping practice for a sensitive device subject to static, as well as shock and shaking damage that would make it useless on one hand, and or sporadic in service on the other. I happened to have the latter of the two.That said, Amazon took the return, shipped me a new one next day (free) and this time the package protecting the drive while not perfect, was better. The static bag was sealed, and there was a LOT of the SMALL standard bubble wrap around the drive. This time it seems to have worked as I like the device because it works as it should and have had no issues since. Really Amazon, get someone to make things consistent in shipping. Preferably someone with a clue as how to handle electronics.These are drives intended for bulk installation by a PC manufacture concern so be aware you will need appropriate cabling and frame screws if you plan to mount it in case.Its fast, quiet, and has quick access/retrieval.Good drive, fair price, be VERY picky about the shipping. If there is ANY doubt its not functioning properly return it while you can for another. I rated it highly because it functions great, and is all I could expect in that way but sadly the return service while very good will possibly be needed, thing is it wouldn't have to be needed if they only shipped in appropriate packaging.

This drive was purchased along with the Antec MX-1 USB/e-SATA 3.5-Inch Hard Drive Enclosure for use with a DirecTV DVR. It has functioned flawlessly for over 2 years, getting a lot of daily use. The setup is quiet and reliable.

this HDD works really good, I haven't had any problem at all, I use it as a network hard drive in an old computer (Pentium 4) with Linux Mint, so I can access the HDD from any laptop in the house. and it has no compatibility issue at all, both Windowze and Linux work nice and good. I thought it was gonna be used, but it's new, it has no sign of use whatsoever, and for the price it's the best deal I've seen, I paid like $55 I think.

If you are using the regular version of XP or are using disk cloning software choose the EADS series and you'll save yourself a lot of grief! The newer EARS series has 2k sectors rather than 512 byte sectors and that will cause issues with both XP/win 2K and most disk cloning software.If you have the 64 bit vesion of XP, Windows 7 or Vista, and aren't using disk cloning software then the EARS series might be acceptable or even preferred. Otherwise, don't get taken in by the message saying there is a new version of this drive. It's not an improved version of this drive!

Summary: unusable in a RAID array, incredibly loud and annoying on Linux.I ordered three of these drives and they're all going back as defective.They look inexpensive and folks give them good reviews; I talked to people who used them in their desktop setups. It turns out that Western Digital, at some point, changed the drives they were making so that they no longer work under a RAID setup. The drives routinely fault out of the array all because you can't turn on TLER. (Check wikipedia's article on Time-Limited Error Recovery if you want the gory details.) Also, when used on a Linux computer, they make a horrible loud clicking noise every ten seconds as the heads are parked and un-parked due to routine disk access. Nowhere on Western Digital's spec page about the drive does it say "do not use in a RAID setup" or "do not use in Linux."Hey, Western Digital: lots of desktop computers (Dells, for instance) ship with RAID 0 or RAID 1 setups these days! It's no longer an "enterprise" feature, so you might want to make sure your drives work with it!From scouring the web, it turns out that the "sub"-model number and build date are important. My three drives were WD15EADS-00P8B0, built Nov 2009, firmware 01.00A01. There are reports that older build-date drives can be made to work; true or not, mine could not. Western Digital's customer service is of zero help, blaming the problem on everything but the drive.No more Western Digital drives for me, ever. I've put WD drives in my last three builds because they're inexpensive and reliable, but no longer. Back to Seagate drives (yes, even after their ST31500341AS firmware debacle)!

I bought this drive back in early December, 2009. About a month ago (June, 2010), my computer started getting hardware failures and rebooting for seemingly no good reason. Last night, I ran checkdisk on all of my drives, and over 50,000 Bad Sector errors were shown for this drive.Since my drive is still under full warranty, I went to the WD websiteto report the issue. In order to get a replacement drive, you have to package it to their specifications and mail yours off to them OR provide them with a credit card so they can block off $100 to pay for the drive in case they say the drive isn't defective.On top of that, for a drive that is clearly defective, YOU HAVE TO PAY SHIPPING TO MAIL THEM THE DRIVE!! I understand that hardware some times fails and needs to be replaced, but I've never had to pay to ship a clearly defective item back to the manufacturer!!! I would NOT have bought this drive had I known this was their policy!

Packaged in bubble wrap again (about 1 week ago, around Feb 1st)!!! So after yet another call to customer service to explain that the packaging was improper and I wanted a replacement for my replacement because the original shipment and the replacement were both packaged improperly, customer service finally said they were pulling the Amazon seller listing for the item and correcting the problem. I decided to just return the original shipment, the replacement shipment, the replacement's replacement shipment, and yet another additional order I had for a refund as I don't think the improper packaging issue will be fixed anytime soon.The bubble wrap was popped and the drive had solid contact with the bottom of the box resulting in unforseeable shock damage. Check the manufacturers shipping recommendations how to properly ship a hard drive and you will understand the difference that packaging makes.I did take pictures of the hard drive in the packaging and did attempt to leave the packaging feedback you read above however Amazon said I had too many rateable packages in the past ## days. But my packaging was as shown above with bubble wrap.Good news, I see that Amazon doesn't have any until 2/20/2010 so it looks like Amazon is attempting to take care of the packaging problems. I thank them for listening. Great product and even better when packaged correctly.

I have been a computer tech for over 30 years, and have always used and recommended Western Digital drives to others. And this particular drive would be no exception. The packaging is well-designed, protecting the drive in a manner similar to that of their retail packaging...antistatic bags, and the plastic end caps to hold the drive in the center of the interior space. These ARE OEM drives, so there is no other items included. Be sure to have SATA data and power cable adapters on hand for quick installation. These drives were purchased for use in my NAS RAID box. I had been considering purchase of 4 1TB drives, but these came along, and I got the same capacity with one less physical drive. The SATA controller I have running the RAID array operates at only SATA I speed, so you need to be sure to set the jumper on the option block to run the drive at this speed. Note that there are NO jumpers on the drive as shipped, so be sure you have some of them on hand as well, if you need to set it to run at SATA I mode. Overall, these are an excellent drive for the price. Power savings as well as cost savings. Even though only a 1 year warranty, I have had only a few WD drives fail on me in the dozens I have owned (many of which were running 24/7), and then only after a period of at least 5 to 6 years. A great deal...don't pass it up!

Due to poor packing of these drives (Boxes where not really secure in larger box, drives were not packed with foam or plastic retainer, subjected to shock of being bounced around) I have no idea if MTBF has been significantly reduced. My gut feeling is yes, it has. But until the drives fail, I will not know. I expect the lifetime of the drives to be about 3 yrs.Some background on me. I have been doing work in the IT field for almost 20yrs now. This is the worst packaging of Hard Drives I have seen. Although the pictures of where Amazon sent the drives in a slim envelope/card board was pretty scary. I hope to update this post around the 90 day mark to see if either drive has failed.1/8/2010 - Later in the afternoon/early evening.After talking to others in our IT department, it seems that this style of product packaging is becoming more prevalent and I should really wait the 90 days before passing judgement. "Yes it is new style packaging, yes it looks flimsy. No, it really is not." was the message I got. Okay, my intestinal fortitude is still not where I would like it, but I am willing to give it a go. If I pass the 30 day mark without drive failure, I will mark up a star. If I pass the 90 day mark without a drive failure, I will give a whole hearted endorsement.2/2/2010 - Closing in on the 30 day mark and no failures. Marked up a star. The packaging still forces me to do a gut check.

Ok, picked up a couple of these drives at Christmas. One is a 64Mb Cache and the other is 32Mb Cache. The drives are super quiet, and run nice and cool. These drives would be the perfect choice for the average user that doesn't care about speed to load programs or pictures, videos etc.DO NOT use these drives in a server! Especially Windows Home Server unless you are only storing important documents. These drives are NOT fast enough to stream video from a WHS Server. Tried it and didn't work. Glitchy choppy video every time server drive balancing service runs, which is around every hour or so.Streaming from a standard home computer works fine but can be dicey if you are streaming HD.

I was really excited when I purchased this hard drive, as I really needed storage. I was able to get it next day, and had it installed in my computer that evening. I was able to transfer quite a few hundred images to it. I had the hard drive for a little over three months, and it died. Luckily I backed up everything on DVD's just in case. But the hard drive failed multiple diagnostics. I have had hard drives that I found that were 5 years old, and was able to use them for another couple of years before they crashed. But three months? That's outrageous. From here on out, I will purchase any and all hard drives from my local store. I will no longer have Amazon ship them. No matter how good the price.

I have 5 hdd in my computer, and they have all ended up being WD because the others have failed after a couple years. I decided to consolidate a couple into one larger drive (this one), Music and ISO files. I should not have gone for the 'green drive' because while it still works, it barely works. music files take several seconds to start playing with all my music players, opening folders on this HD is slow in both linux and windows. Initially the hd would randomly not appear in POST or BIOS, but after many hours of messing around I switched sata ports on the [3 month old] motherboard to get it to work. Other sata drives dont have issues with that port so im thinking its still the hd even though it shows up in BIOS consistently now. This is the first 'green' drive ive gotten from wd so maybe the underperformance is by design. Since ive now had disks from every major manufacturer fail on me, im grudgingly going back to higher performance wd drives. I would advise against green drives for the moment, a couple watts isnt worth this crap.

I bought this as a 2nd drive for my computer in that large drives like this tend to be too slow to be a prrimary drive. The packing was so flimsy the first one came in broken. This is why I buy from Amazon, easy and convenient returns. The second one came in and I couldn't get it to format over 73%. I called WD for tech support. What a joke. 1st they wan't me to run their download and run their utility. I did and it said it was a cable issue. I explained that I check my bios which found the drive and it had formatted for a period so I couldn't see where it was a cable. I was told unless I replaced the cable they would not assist me or provide warranty service. I not only purchased another cable to use, but changed out slots on the motherboard to plug it in. Surprise, it stopped at 73 %. This time I got a surpervisor who agreed it was a drive issue and not a cable. I would not buy another WD drive solely due to the lack of compentent and courteous support personnel. If your dirve works and you don't need warranty service or support it is probably a good drive. If not, WD ranks at the bottom of the support ladder. ALWAYS buy from Amazon since they stand behind the products they sell and know that sometimes consumers need to return items that do not work. WD does not understand this, buy Seagate.

I purchased three of these drives for placement in my HP EX495 1.5TB Mediasmart Home Server ( Black) a little over a month ago. So far they are running just great. These drives are very quiet. I have the server in my basement and when I am downstairs working, I cannot even tell the server is running except for the lights on the front of it. The Caviar Green drives run 10 to 15 degrees cooler than the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1.5 TB SATA 32 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Hard Drive ST31500341AS that came with the unit, even when backing up data. They idle at about 80 degrees and max out at 95 degrees. I have seen the Seagate as high as 110 degrees. Yes they are only 5400rpm compared to the Seagate, but for a server that is just backing up the computers in the house and streaming music & video they are more than adequate.

I bought this HD becuase I was running out of space on stock HD. I decided to go with WD becuase after two of my Seagate HD crashed on me, I didn't really trust them anymore. However, what most people need to know is that this product is an OEM meaning that these are primarily shipped to buyers like Dell and HP who then use them in there computers when you oder them, so this means that they will not come with any screws or wire hareness or addapters. You will need to buy your own. And becuase it is an OEM again, you won't be getting what you think with the packaging. It's very simple, just the HD no manuel, but it's pretty easy to put into you computer if you know what it is you're doing. So once, again to all the people who gave it bad rating, it's an OEM product so they will only sent you the HD. If you want you can buy a the more expensive model for the packaging and wires and harnesses.

This is the worst hard drive ever. I've literally installed windows 7 on this thing 3-4 times a day for the past 5 days. The amount of data corruption is unbelievable. It'll be running fine one minute, then you install an update or new software and you can't reboot. If you have corruption you're lucky because sometimes your computer won't even recognize the existence of this drive. Reformatting doesn't help at all. BTW you can only access 1.36 TB of the drive.

"Amazon Has Certified That This Packaging Is Frustration-Free"-- My frustration started with the package and escalated both when I opened it and when I attempted to use the drive. It came in the anti-static standard bag with an invoice wrapped around it, that's it, nothing else. No protective bubbles, no padding, just a box and a drive. When I plugged it in all I heard was clicking, no spinning, it was the faint sound of a DOA drive. Was unable to partition it, view it in disk manager, or anything. Very disappointing. Not blaming this on the drive either, likely poor packaging is the reason for failure. Even if the drive had worked, I'd of given it a one simply due to the poor decision of how to package this sensitive electronic equipment.

I've had the WD7500AADS for about a month now, installed in an Icy Dock external firewire/USB enclosure. The drive serves as the Time Machine backup of my office computer, so it performs automatic backups multiple times per day. So far, it is working flawlessly. It replaces a 500GB Seagate 7200.11 drive, and it is so much quieter and cooler than the Seagate that I can hardly believe it. Really an excellent drive, and one to get if you're concerned about the block size issue on the newer Caviar Green EARS drives.

I have owned several brands of hard drive int he past including Maxtor, Seagate, Western Digital and Hitachi. The only ones I have never had a problem with are Western Digital and for the last five years that is the only hard drives I have used in all my PCs. They are reliable, offer good performance and are reasonably priced. This one has gone into the media player to play my DVD collection from the hard disk. Highly recommend Western Digital brand hard disks.

As to the comments of poor packaging, my drive arrive today packaged in a large over-pack box with crushed brown paper surrounding a smaller inner box. The inner box was custom fitted for the drive with much room around the drive and with fitted inner restraints to keep the drive in position in the inner box. The drive was encased in the usual anti-static plastic envelope. If your drive is packaged as mine was you should have no worries.Note: If your package is delivered to your doorstep and has sat out in the cold for a while (as mine had), the drive also will, of course, be cold. So, BEFORE YOU OPEN THE ANTI-STATIC BAG, allow the drive to come to room temperature. Otherwise you should expect moisture to condense on the drive and even though it is a sealed drive unit, it's still better to allow everything to stabilize to room temp and not take a chance with moisture condensing on it. Just give it an hour or two and it should be fine.

I never thought I'd write a review about the packaging, but this was really really a poor packing job. The reviews that say that the packaging has been fixed no longer seems to be true. The bare drive arrived loose in a box with no cushion and was left on my doorstep in the rain. Amazon really needs to reexamine how it packages fragile tech components such as this and its delivery policies with its shippers.I can't believe that a company like Amazon can ship drives like this so haphazardly. I have my fingers crossed that this drive will actually last and not fail because of the poor shipping policies of Amazon. As a prime member, I expect some thought and care to ensuring a safe delivery. Amazon needs to remedy this situation QUICKLY and PUBLICLY.

Installed a pair of these units into a Synology NAS in a RAID1 set up (dual redundant disks) and it's been working fine. I was going to install two more and make it RAID5, but some of the reviews have me holding off. I've had no problems, and the drives are 90% full, they run quiet and cool.

I purchased this HD because I was running out of storage capacity for my digital videos. I have some experience putting together computers, so this was a rather simple plug & play experience. Since buying it I have had no problems at all, so I couldn't really comment on service/support as it wasn't needed. Although the item shipped quickly and arrived undamaged, I was a little upset at the lack of packing materials used to protect such a sensitive item.

This is an excellent hard drive with a vast amount of space to store pictures and videos. The SATA connections were easy to make and the drive was very easy to install in my external eSATA enclosure. Even though it's a "green" drive and spins slower than other drives, I have not noticed that it's slow to respond and for external data storage, it provides an ideal solution to my storage needs.This drive was provided from a supplier, not shipped by Amazon.com and the packaging of this drive by the outside supplier was excellent. They properly surrounded the drive on all six sides with bubble wrap in the packing box. Amazon.com needs to take some lessons from this supplier in how to properly package a hard drive.It's a great drive, excellent deal, I definitely would deal with this supplier again.

Until now I've been buying the WD Caviar Green 750GB version of this drive. Now this drive is the price-point sweet spot. I have 2 750GB and one 1.5TB drive in my Windows Home Server machine. It is installed hooked up to a SATA PCI card. WHS recognized the drive right away and within a few minutes it was up and running. The drive runs cool and quiet as advertised. I've had one drive running for over a year, another one for six months and this one for about 1 month. My WHS machine is up 24/7 and serves media as well as backing up all the PCs/laptops in the house. If I need another drive soon this will be the one I get.So far so good knock on wood.
