Seems to perform quite well and seems quieter than the older Caviar Black I've got, but it's hard to tell as I've got it in a very loud server.

After purchasing countless pre-assembled external drives, I decided to assemble some myself and test their performance out against the ones I previously purchased. After the test, I was pleasantly surprised to see that these Caviar Black HDDs combined with a MacAlly enclosure, far surpassed the performance of my Lacie drives which I used prior. As the description notes, these drives are specifically made for constant usage and I found no slowdowns, overheating, or failures running an entire photography library off these drives which is hundreds of gigabytes in size. The bottom line is if you're sick of getting ripped off buying pre-assembled drives, these are the answer you've been looking for!

Never a problem with WD Black. Plug it in, set the Dell BIOS to "on", fire it up, rename the drives and use it. I'm not running RAID, it's just another drive that I do a manual back up on. This is an OEM so don't forget to get a sata cable.

I bought this after obsessing over various makes of hard drives to upgrade my Mac Pro. I was impressed by the company video and by the users' reviews. The drive arrived promptly and well packed. Installing it was a snap and it worked immediately and remains my primary HD. My original is now my backup. I was not disappoinnted. After 2 months of continuous use I can recommend this 1 TB drive unreservedly: fast, quiet and dependable. You can' ask for anything more.

If you know anything about the problems Seagate had last year and have read about how well the WD Black's run. Then why are you even reading this! Until the come out with a new SATA technology the WD Black's will be the best you can get from a price point of view!

I installed this (black) hard drive on a fast computer with an OEM copy of Win 7 (64 bit). It scored 5.9 on the Windows Experience Index. Amazon did a great job of packing it and, of course, it arrived a couple of days before the expected date.NOTE: This is an OEM hard drive and does not come with SATA cabels for either power or data, nor any screws to fasten it to the computer case.I hightly recommend it to anyone who doesn't need a hard drive that is larger in capacity.

These drives have been tested to be the fastest 7200 RPM drives on the market. If you do a search, you'll find tests that compare the 640 black to the Raptor, and they are within 10% or less of the speed of the raptor, and on some tests, pretty much dead even.This review compares the Raptor 150 to the 640 Black, and it compares everything--write, read, transfer, sustained transfer, small file copy, large file, etc:[...]If you buy two of these drives and run them in RAID 0, you get smokin' faster transfer rates than a single Raptor.The upside is that this drive is 80 bucks compared to a raptor at 300. Also, the largest raptor is 300GB while this one is 640GBs. So you get 1.2TBs of space for 160.00 or about half of what a single raptor costs.Also, the Caviar Blacks are the same build quality as the Enterprise drives, so you get the 5 year warranty. The only difference in this drive and the Enterprise drives is that the latter are tuned for RAID, while the 640 is tuned for desktop use. The tuning for RAID lowers error recovery to 7 seconds, while the error recovery on the 640, like all desktop drives, is a much longer 30+ seconds.When using RAID, if your drive does happen to find a fault and try to recover it, after about 7 seconds the RAID controller will simply say, "Nope, bad sectors" mark the sectors bad and keep going. They are tuned this way to maximize performance on high volume servers where speed is more important than waiting for a non RAID drive to recover information. Other than that, there is virtually no speed difference between this drive and its Enterprise equivalent.

When I upgraded to Windows 7, I changed my computer's hard drive to this. It has performed well so far (2 months). My only concern is that while not too loud, I can hear when this drive is running. The old drive didn't make any sound. When I read reviews for this drive, many of them mentioned how quiet it was. I am not terribly concerned, because I do rigorous backups every 24 hours onto an external 1Tb hard drive (Hitachi). All in all, I think this will give satisfactory service.

This was my first time building a computer, so I had to do a lot of searching for information as to what I was attempting to do. I went with the Western Digital 640 GB Caviar Black SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB, and I am extremely satisfied. The product arrived on time, installed easily, and has worked as expected after installation. I am extremely satisfied with my decision!

I bought this drive to replace one that had failed in my desktop computer. It was easy to install and has performed perfectly so far. It is a "bare bones" drive and you get nothing but the drive - which is all I wanted or needed. It is hard to beat the price for a high performance drive with 1tb of capacity.The installation was simple if you have basic computer ability. I formatted and partioned it without any problems.Performance is very good. It is noticibally faster then the old drive I replaced.Shipping was prompt and the unit was well packed.I think anyone would be pleased with the "bang for the buck" this drive offers.

First is of all, the drive is a good drive, however I have 2 issues with Amazon/Western Digital:1. Amazon packaging of this drive is just terrible. When I received it, the drive was rattling in the box. That is unacceptable.2. Check the drive warranty online as soon as you take it out of the bag. Mine shows as:"No limited warranty - Product was originally sold to a system manufacturer. Please contact the system manufacturer or the place of purchase for warranty service. "This pretty much means that Western Digital considers this a drive that you receive in an OEM computer (say Dell) and that the computer vendor is responsible for warranty.Western Digital is known from screwing up the serial numbers occasionally.For all that will criticize this review because it should be about the "drive" performance not other things, cork it! This is about a drive I bought from this page. What I received was a banged drive with no warranty. I cannot give it more than 1 star...

I purchased this drive to replace a one year old Hitachi that was clicking and groaning at me. Runs fairly cool in a not so ventilated case (about 42 C) and is very quiet. Don't let this lull you into thinking that these drives are infallible...buy 2 of these and use one for a backup. Amazon as always...you rock!

Buy it, you will like it, beleive me this was a very greatdeal for these days and times. You can't beat the five year warranty that comeswith it either.

In contrast to the sub-optimal packaging illustrated in the customer photos for this product family, my shipment was packaged using ethyfoam end-caps that left no play inside the cardboard shipping carton.And while this is the proper way to ship such a device and the manner illustrated photographically in the customer photos is a poor choice, these devices are a lot more robust when not operating than some appear to think. Western Digital lists the non-operating shock tolerance at "250 G, 2ms" (<[...]>).RRS

Bought 2 of these to expand my internal workstation storage capacity. I couldn't be happier. They were a breeze to install, recognized immediately, and are really fast. Anyone who is considering another brand does not need to worry about the performance of these drives, they are the real deal.

Bought one and put it in a Rosewill external USB/FW800/eSATA case I got from Newegg. Quiet and super fast over Firewire 800 on a MacBook Pro. Generally faster than my other external Firewire 800 drive (WD 640GB Caviar Blue / AAKS)... I guess because this is higher density and a 'black' drive with more cache. Amazingly easy to setup on Mac OS X (plug in, follow prompts). No complaints.Also bought two of these for a Mac Pro tower. Installed easily in the drive sleds with no additional cables, and definitely faster using SATA than on the MBP using Firewire 800.

This drive was extemely noisy... It sounded like a tea kettle starting to boil. The drive formatted OK doing a quick format, but I started having problems writing to it, so I did a full format. While doing a full format it failed repeatedly, so I sent it back for a refund. 5 STARS to Amazon.com customer service, 0 stars to Western Digital. Amazon even paid for the return shipping.I wound up getting a Samsung 1TB drive instead, and it was so good, I purchased a 2nd one to do mirror backups. Unfortunately Amazon.com shows the Samsung drives with a 4 to 6 week shipping delay, so I had to purchase from another site...

Shipped fast.Installed painlessly.Formatted (relatively) quickly.Works flawlessly.What more could you want?Large storage capacity? Fast read/write? Low price? Done. Done. And done.Warranty? 5 years...the longest of any HDD.Windows sees it as 1000.2GiB.It's been working fine 30+ days now. I have no complaints.I hear some retailers ship their OEM HDDs with inadequate packing. When I opened my box it was wrapped in it's factory anti-static sealed bag, wrapped in bubble wrap, and cushioned between large plastic bubbles...long story short: It was incredibly well protected from the Neanderthals that seem to work at all the shipping companies these days.

Just a great price for a humongous amount of storage. Bought two of them, now instead of wondering where I'm going to squeeze my files among multiple smaller hard disks, I'm wondering how I'm going to make use of all that extra space!Amazon must have smarted from those reviews about the lousy packaging: my two disks somewhat ridiculously came double-boxed inside a 19x13x7-inch box, with plenty of air cushions inside... a bit overkill. Shipped by FedEx to my home, a bit of a hassle as they tend to attempt signature-required delivery while I'm away at work.As noted, these are really barebones: disk & dessicant packet inside an anti-static bag are what you get inside the plain cardboard box; no instructions or cables or even box labeling.Also note unlike WD-boxed hard drives I've bought previously, these are not formatted: after making sure your BIOS recognizes the drive, you'll need to go into Windows Disk Management utility to find it and then format/assign a partition to it. Only then will it appear in Windows Explorer.

I ordered the product from Amazon.com on November 11th and it arrived at my house on November 13th.Pros:Best HD you can ever buy. Fast, reliable, and it makes you smile just by its smashing good looks.Cons:I am a bit concerned about how they shipped the HD. The product was safely packaged but, the HD is somewhat loose while in its box.***Other than that there is no reason not to buy this HD. Amazon is the best!!! They give the best price, and are always willing to help its customers instantly.***I have been with Amazon for a long time and have never had any problems.

I bought one of these some time ago and after two months of light use it stop working. The First month it was ok. then it start to do some noise and slow a bit the transfer rate, some times it did work and sometimes did not. and two month later it stop working. I am very disappointed with WD, but some people says theirs has no problem, so i just had bad luck. Good Luck, i hope yours works fine.

Performs great, isn't loud, isn't too hot. Simple as that. If you consider the caviar blue, just go black. It's not louder in my opinion and has better performance. I recommend against the green as they have a loud screech sound that I couldn't tolerate.

In the current age of digital media a large hard drive is an absolute must. I've now replaced the hard drives in my current desktop computer 3 times and it hasn't been due to failed drives. This drive is 4x larger than the one it replaced and it clearly outperforms it on all levels. I was concerned with the overall speed of the drive due to it's size, however, I realize that I had nothing to worry about. The drive was easy to install and performs extremely well. The only issue I had was assoicated with Western Digital's unique connection cable. I wasn't sure if I needed the cable or not and ordered one anyway (turned out I didn't need it). This is a great drive at a reasonable price. I would highly recommend and I'm presonally debating purchasing a 2nd.

Very good affordable fast drive but Amazon should be ashamed of how they shipped it to me. It was just floating around a box with no protection and of course the monkeys as fedex delivered the box in almost crushed condition. No bubblewrap, no eggshells just a hard drive bangin around a big box that was treated as a volleyball by fedex. I really was expecting to have to ship it back thinking it must be broken, but its been a+ since installed. Very impressed with the speed of the drive.

The Caviar Black model of drives differ in three ways from Blue in three major ways:1) 32MB buffer vs 16MB. This means the drive is overall faster because it can store more data in memory local to the drive. So if you access the same data frequently there is little or no drive access to get at the data.2) Dual processors vs single. This will alleviate the load on your CPU as the drive itself has more processing power locally.3) Five year warranty vs three. Five years is a lifetime in hardware. Basically, you're covered for longer than you will most likely use the drive.The Caviar Black line comes in three four sizes; 1TB, 750GB, 640GB, and 500GB. The 1TB and 640GB are the fastest because they use a denser platter technology which allows the drive head to get at the data quicker. The 750GB and 500GB are no slouches though and the differences in speed will not be noticeable to most people under most real-world usage scenarios.Caviar Black drives are the fastest affordable consumer drives available today. If you want faster you have to look that the VelociRaptor 10000RPM line of drives but expect to pay a lot more for a lot less storage.I measured the speed of the 750GB model using the HD Tune utility and access time was a fast 12.5ms with less than 1% CPU usage on my 3.2Ghz Intel Quad Core setup. The drive runs cool at 32°C in my system and is quiet. Overall a great drive at a great price. You can't really go wrong.

Very easy to integrate, I use a SATA/150 PCI card in an older Dell Dimension tower. After formatting the disk, it was ready for use. Very happy with this 1TB Hard Disk. It has an excellent record from users. - LF

The drive installed easily. Formatted easily. But it is much more noisey than my original Western Digital. All I could think of is the old SCSI drives. I don't know if it's defective. Would like to try another.

This drive is fast and reliable(so far) quiet and runs cool. Not much else you can ask for from a hard drive. I find it interesting how much hard drive companies change, seagate used to be the best with western digital 2nd and maxtor a distance 3rd. Then samsung got into it and quickly rose toward the top while seagate got much less reliable. Right now though I think when you take into account everything, western digital is definitely the best. Especially these black drives, probably a little slower than the raptors but not that much and they don't cost that much more than the competitors it's a no-brainer.

Bought this "black" series because it is a dual processor based higher end drive, It works as promised is fast 7200RPM and quiet and athough it is not the low power model it draws less than 10W according to specs so it should work with all systems. As a tech I lose a whole day rebuilding data and OS when a drive fails so the extra $10-$50 dollars spent on the black series is worth it to me. And you get a 5 year warranty (2 additional years for the extra money)

I've been using 2 of these drives for the past 2 months, I haven't had any problems but the drives are noisy like back in the old days. The 32 MB cache doesn't seem to be any better of a performer than a 16 MB cache, I was a little disappointed thus the missing stars.

I ordered 2 of these and they shipped from 2 different warehouses. I am happy to report both drives where packed very good in the boxes.I was a little aprehensive to order these from Amazon due to all the reports of bad packaging.I have to say the performance of these drives is not what I'd hoped for.The next HD I buy I will probably try another brand. In the windows 7 Performance rating I'm only getting a 5.9 which is the lowest score in my system

Installed in a Linux workstation. As with other HD manufacturers, WD uses metric units, meaning that the drive has an unformatted capacity of 1000GB. In my system, formatted capacity is 917 GiB (binary). The work I do is very read/write intensive, and the drives will often see almost continuous use for a week or more. No problems after a month: noise levels are well below the background of the (admittedly noisy) system; temperature seems acceptable. If you are using RAID you should buy the raid-edition drives

I've only had these WD's for a week and a half but they're working well in my 4-drive NAS system and pass full SMART tests every night. My main comment is that each came in satisfactory packaging, a specific cardboard box with two soft molded plastic end caps. Love Amazon & Prime.I originally purchased 4 Seagate 1.5 TB drives locally but returned them since the outer packaging part number was misleading and didn't match the drives inside, which have a notorious failure rate. They're the ones with the '341' in the part number.. avoid them, your data is too precious to risk.

Used Acronis Ture Image and cloned Windows 7 Ultimate + data from a 1 TB to this monster drive. Flawless clone, drive is fast, well done WD! I see ordering 2 more in the near future.

Got a great price for the performance and capacity of this drive from Amazon. Since the drive was an OEM version, it came with no software. Went to the Western Digital site and downloaded their special edition of Acronis True Image software to create a copy of my existing drive. I could not get this program to complete the copy on my system. WD support tried to help but I eventually went to a third party software to create my copy. The drive itself is fantastic, quick and quiet. Highly recommended.

I have an application that needs very fast streaming reads, almost continually, over a multi-TB dataset. Write performance isn't that important, but straight-line speed and data integrity are. Oh, and it's cost-sensitive too. Good luck, right?I settled on a RAID 6 array of eight WD1001FALS disks connected to Supermicro AOC-SAT2-MV8 controllers, housed in a RPC-4020 case. I plan to add another 2-4 disks in a month or two. Write performance isn't critical, so software RAID will do -- instead of spending a thousand bucks on a RAID controller, I'll buy some simple SATA controllers, an extra quad-core CPU, more RAM, and still have saved enough money to buy five more disks. At maximum write speeds, parity computation uses almost an entire processor core; of course, I have seven more. Turns out Core 2 chips are really good at parity computation, even RAID 6.Typical large file reads:3498999611 bytes (3.5 GB) copied, 6.04208 s, 579 MB/s3999941908 bytes (4.0 GB) copied, 6.56308 s, 609 MB/sDespite being software RAID over dumb SATA controllers, performance is excellent. (For comparison, Gigabit Ethernet has a theoretical maximum speed of 125 MB/s.) Throughput often reaches 100 MB/s per disk.Really, I'm not sure you can go wrong with these drives. They're reasonably quiet, very fast, and don't run any hotter than their competitors. Sounds like a winner to me.

I bought this a month ago, the drive is almost silent, no high grinding noise, i registered it at western digital and got 5 years warranty. great value for the price.The only thing i didnt like is the way its packaged, however, the drive is rock solid, chkdisk submitted no errors so im kinda happy it didnt get damaged due to poor packaging.P.S: Make sure to format it FULL FORMAT not quick format, the difference is FULL FORMAT will perform "check disk" as well and report any errors found, if you get at least 1 bad sector, make sure to RMA it.

I bought this 640Gig Black Hard drive to speed up my loadtimes. I used it for my C: drive and noticed immediately how fast it loaded windows than my 250gig Sata drive. Also my games loaded about 30% faster now. So I think it was a very good investment over a Green or Blue version of this drive.

A former Seagate customer, but I have heard of all the Seagate failures since they purchased Maxtor. I have had this drive for about 30 days and it has met my expectations. No issues and I would by another. For users where performance isn't quite as important, consider the Green drive by WD which dynamically adjusts the drives rpm to safe power and heat dissipation.
