I needed a large capacity SADA drive for my main work computer. This drive is OEM so it did not come with cable but I already had a spare and they are pretty cheap anyway. This drive is SATA II and has a max transfer rate higher than my old SATA I capable motherboard. However, it seem to auto detect my motherboard max transfer rate and so is backwards compatible. Even with this being the case, I still went back into the computer and shorted the SATA II drive pins 5-6 which locks it into the SATA I speed of 150 MB/s. 'Better safe than sorry I always say.

I have an HP MediaSmart Home Server and I wanted to upgrade its storage capability. Purchased 3 of these 2TB beauties. (I still have one slot remaining to fill...will do that a little later.) And here's the thing; I could not find any information anywhere (HP, the forums, etc...) to indicate my server model (EX475) could handle the size of these drives. But I can tell you now, it can! These drives surprised me in two ways: first, they are quiet. And second, they run cooler than the 1TB drives they replaced. For a drive that spins at 7200 rpm, this is really good news. Also, the 5 year warranty is nice to have in the back pocket. And one other thing: Amazon rocked the lowest price and shipped it FREE. Nice!Great news on all counts...way to go Western Digital!

I originally purchased this model Western Digital hard drive back in April 2009 but after about 7 weeks of use it started to die. It eventually did give up the ghost and took about 300GB of stuff I wasn't able to get backed up off of it with it.Western Digital has a RMA procedure in place that involves them trying to up sell you to another model and makes you pay to ship the drive back to them (about $12). I shipped it two day and it took them a week to register the drive even after I was able to confirm it was delivered on time via the tracking number. Then it took them almost two weeks to send me a replacement drive. After the previous experience with this model I was leery of putting any data on the drive but after about a month or so of light use doing temp backups I went ahead and used the drive for its original purchase intent, backup of my main HD (500GB) and storage of music and video files. Sure enough the drive started acting up in all new ways first by making a high pitched whining noise followed by odd clicking sounds. I started trying to get data off the drive and only lost about 200GB this time before it went out on me by not showing up in Windows anymore. Using the drive management utility in Windows 7 it showed up as a RAW partition. Using restoration software I was able to save another 100GB of data before it went out for good.Doing some research reveals that a lot of folks are having the same sorts of problems in about the same time frame with this model drive.I have to admit that this whole experience has made me a bit skittish about purchasing any more WD products which is sad as I've had nothing but very good experiences in the past with their hardware.I did some checking and here in North Carolina if after getting yet another RMA replacement drive it happens again then I can pursue monetary restitution via the AG's office and I will if it happens yet again.

So this is my 2nd WD drive that I've installed on my Macpro. My other 1TB Green WD failed after 6 months and I had to use special software to yank my photography off of the corrupt and failing drive. I went without a 4th drive for a year and decided to finally buy another drive but thought the Black WD drive would be better...Well, it's noisy. Like a miniature jack hammer. It's already getting on my nerves and I'm seriously rethinking even keeping this drive. The clanking and knocking sounds are so loud they can't be ignored.

The Western Digital Caviar Black drives are the industry standard. Those who know, purchase Caviar Black. This drive is superfast and reliable. I have 3 of the 500GB drives as well and love them.If you want storage, get a 1TB or 2TB drive for that purpose. This drive is not JUST for storage, it is for the speediness of the drive and using with an OS as the main C: drive.

I got this drive to replace the 320GB drive my 24" iMac came with to store more photos on. What I got was not only a ton of storage space but a significant boost in speed! The OS boots up much faster than before and my applications (even poky Photoshop) open super fast now! This drive does run a lot hotter than my old one. In iMacs there is a thermistor attached to the hard drive which controls the fan, and you'll want to make sure you re-attach it to this drive when you swap them. The review at Tom's Hardware says it runs at 114? (46?C) and I notice my Mac's fan kicking on a lot more than with the old drive. This drive came packaged well. Like others have said, large outer box with sealed air cushions, inner box with foot suspensions, etc. This is the 5th HDD I've ordered from Amazon and they have all come this way. The other 4 I've had running in a Drobo for over a year with no issues. I don't blame folks for returning shoddily packed items, I would too. I've been lucky with Amazon on these. The origin point for all of my drives was Lexington, KY - so they must know what they're doing at that facility when it comes to packaging.

This review is moreso about the way Amazon shipped me this OEM drive as opposed to a review on the drive itself.Amazon quite literally threw this drive into a cardboard box and mailed it to me. No joke. No protective padding, nothing. This is an OEM drive so it does not have a retail box of its own. The drive is wrapped in a plastic bag and that's it.Someone at Amazon's shipping department figured this hard drive would be fine on its own inside a huge cardboard box with a few other items I ordered, fully and completely unprotected, flapping about in transit.I am entirely and utterly appalled.I haven't even opened or used the drive yet, so sure am I about its flawed physical, internal condition. It's going right back to Amazon for exchange.I gave the product 4 stars because I believe the product itself is most likely worthy of the review. However, the way Amazon mailed this drive to me is astonishing and needs to be pointed out to potential buyers. As for Amazon: Shame on you. I think some additional training is in order at your packaging facilities. I could make an argument regarding the precious materials and resources it takes to create these hard drives, and what a waste it is to "throw it away", quite literally, by packing such a delicate piece of hardware and technology into an unprotected container. Wow, I still can't believe it...Finally, I think it's hilarious Amazon bills this item as "Ships in Certified Frustration-Free Packaging. This item is delivered in an easy-to-open recyclable box and is free of plastic 'clamshells' and wire ties". Ha! Yea, Amazon. You got that right. It ships in AIR.

I read the reviews about this drive arriving in a box with a couple bubble protected and it was flopping all around. Apparently Amazon has heard the rattling of the pitchforks and seen the torches miles off. Mine all came individually boxed and in proper packing containers. They were all fine and have thus far all worked in the application I've used them in.

Been using this hard drive for about half a year now and it is blazing fast. I use it on an older Intel dual core and it works perfectly. I've always stuck to Western Digital drives as they are the most reliable. I didn't want to pay as much for a SSD drive so I just got this Caviar Black drive. Using Windows 7(64 bit) and 4GB of RAM, this HD makes my computer fly. Highly recommended. Great deal on Amazon too.

Western Digital suffered from a visibility thing for a long time. Their drives would play the grindy game back in the day of 160GB drives, but vast improvements of their technology made these the go-to drives for me when building a system.I tend to buy a WD Black for any system that doesn't require blazing fast drives that sing and dance in the SSD / 10K RPM data load areas, and frankly not many people "need" that except for overcompensating gamers. The one machine I could possibly use that for is a hyped-up editing system that I need fast access, but frankly I'm not going to load up a 512GB SSD drive with all of my movie-making data just to shave off a few minutes from my edits.I have battered these little puppies around like you wouldn't believe, dropping them, leaving them in hot cars, and even in one memorable instance forgetting that the drive was NOT a coffee coaster. These drives take it like a Royal Marine and then some. For $99, you -could- pick up a Seagate 1.5TB on special, but remember, that sale price is there for a reason. These are well-built drives, and for the money they will last. The 32MB buffer and the 7200 RPM are the mainstays of my system, and they are the bulk of my storage systems.

I was a little unsure as to buying this raw HD from Amazon because of earlier posts I read on sloppy packaging for shipping and drives bouncing around the inside of shipping boxes. I am happy to report that my drive was boxed with molded spacers to fit the HD snugly in it's package. If it's a regional thing, I'm here in NYC on the east coast. So any shipping fears I had went unrealized. I installed the drive in my Mac Pro. Installation was a breeze. Performance of the drive, after the prerequisite formatting (which took under a minute), has been flawless. I have another one of these babies that I use with a docking station. Great price and plenty of space. For now.

I recently had two 500 gb drives(wd5000ys) die in external premium My Books, and replaced them with this 1tb internal unit. Hopefully the reliabilty will be back to WD standards that I have always experienced. Drives are always quiet and fast.THE BOX THAT AMAZON USES FOR THESE DRIVES IS FAR INFERIOR TO THE PACKAGING AND CARE I GET WHEN I ORDER A BOOK ON AMz AND WANT IT UNHARMED BY VARIOUS SHIPPING TERRORS. DRIVES COME PACKAGED IN CARDBOARD CUTOUT ARRANGEMENT THAT BASICALLY LEAVES THE DRIVE FLOPPING AROUND IN THE BOX!! WHY DO BOOKS GET BETTER CARE THAN A DELICATE COMPUTER HARD DRIVE? WORST AMz PACKAGING EVER. THEY ARE USUALLY AWESOME AT THIS STUFF.Last note, if you have any of these My Book drives crash, it is not too terribly difficult to put a new drive in the enclosure. The tricky part is getting the goofy case apart. WD is not very good at telling you how to do it, or at least I couldn't find anything at the WD site related to it. You Tube probably has some guy on video showing you how to pull them apart. I managed it. Many of the varieties of WD My Book cases come apart differently too. I had a spare 400gb and put that in the 500gb My Book Premium case, and runs great.Anything else new happens, I will update this. I took one star off for packaging.

I have read of others that have had hard drives fail and yet in many cases I still see an average or better rating for the drive. I just don't get that. In my case, this drive started giving S.M.A.R.T. errors about a week ago which Windows recovery with chkdsk /f seemed to overcome and which allowed me the opportunity to back everything up (that's a good thing) and run normally until the next time I needed to reboot. Then the system would just hang. I am now working through Western Digital for a replacement. I can't reward a product for failing within 60 days so this drive gets a one star rating.

I ordered three of these 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black drives from Amazon.com. I don't usually order computer parts from Amazon but their prices, especially combined with free shipping anywhere in the US, have made them a much more economical option than other online computer part stores. These drives arrived in one box containing three smaller boxes -- each drive was secured in the smaller box by two black plastic form fitted "guards" to immobilize the hard disk and provide cushion. I was very pleased with the packing especially considering some other reviews and pictures I've seen here on Amazon.I installed the drives in a new PC and configured them for RAID0 using the Intel Raid Controller on an ASUS P7P55D Pro motherboard. I get very fast transfer speeds with these disks compared to my old 160GB SATA drives with 16mb of cache. In Windows 7 x64 Professional using HDTach, I record a burst speed of 320MBps and an average transfer rate of 120 MBps. The most stunning part to me is that the average transfer rate stays steady across the entire platter, whereas my old hard disks would see performance drop off as the "end" of the disk was reached.I have never had heat problems with hard drives, and that holds true for these as well. I have one 120mm intake fan in front of the drive cage that pulls air over them and the temperatures seem perfectly normal, even under load.It should be noted that these drives are not intended to be used in RAID1, RAID10, or RAID5 configurations due to some deep recovery state settings that Western Digital has enabled. Your options around this are to spend the extra money for the RE (Raid Edition) drives, or dig around online and find the utility to disable the correct setting. Also, they're a little bit loud, but not obscenely louder than any other hard disk. All in all I highly recommend this drive.

I got this drive to streamline my storage space from a three hard drive setup to an 128GB SSD/2TB HDD combo. However, now that seems like it may have been a bad idea. I was hoping that this hard drive was going to last at least three to four years, if not longer. The drives this was replacing was a 500GB and 640GB. However, just within a week of using this, Windows told me it was a faulty drive, and had to be backed up and replaced/repaired. I never had this trouble with other WD HDDs, this was the first one that I've used that Windows gave me all this trouble. Hate to say it, but I may wind up trading this one in for a (cough)Seagate(cough) or a (double-cough)Hitachi(double-cough).
