The 1TB WD Caviar Black hard drive is an excellent piece of computer equipment. If you're looking for the three S's - speed, storage, and silence - then look no further. Although, granted, it isn't quite "silent." More like "near-silent."I have two of these drives installed in two completely different systems. The first one acts as a storage drive for my custom built Windows PC. I have read and written thousands upon thousands of files, ranging from music to movies to games, on this drive and it has handled it all without a hiccup. The performance is speedy (about 20-25% faster than my previous 250GB WD storage drive, confirmed with benchmarks) and the drive itself has been quite reliable thus far. Unless you're storing an entire video library on this thing, chances are pretty good that you will not run out of space anytime soon.My second WD Caviar Black drive is acting as the system disk in my 20" aluminum iMac (late-2008 model). First off, I highly recommend that anyone who wishes to consider installing their own hard drive upgrade in one of the new iMac's either have a background in electronics and computer hardware, or find someone who can do it for you. That being said, I pulled out the old stock 320GB Seagate drive and replaced it with this WD model. I've noticed that the drive is slightly louder than the Seagate, but only when I'm operating in a silent environment. If you are apt to play music, have fans running, or work in a noisy office environment, you probably won't even notice the difference, unless you have superhuman bionic hearing or something of that nature. The speed appears to be noticeably faster than the old Seagate drive, although I have not run benchmarks to confirm my observations. Programs seem to open with greater speed and the boot time has been reduced as well.I should probably clarify that the greater speed I'm experiencing isn't Earth-shattering. I'm talking about only a few seconds. Either way, this drive performs admirably as a boot disk for the iMac.Overall, I would highly recommend this drive to anyone looking to upgrade their Windows or Apple desktop computers. I've been a steadfast customer of Western Digital drives for several years now and with good reason: I haven't had one fail me yet.

I needed to replace the 640 GB Western Digital Caviar Blue drive that originally came in my pc with something larger, so off I went looking for the ideal replacement. After browsing hard drive review sites I decided that it should definitely be another WD drive because of their reliability, quality, and performance, but which version should I go for? Green drives could be bought at 1.5 TB for around $125 when I was shopping around, compared to this 1 TB Black drive that was around $90 (and there was no Black 1.5 TB drive).I wondered if the speed difference between the Green and Black would be worth going with the smaller capacity. The answer is HECK YES!! This Black drive was SO worth switching to, it's not even funny. After mirroring my Blue drive contents to my new Black drive and installing it, my pc was noticeably much faster. If I saw this much difference between a Blue and Black drive I can't imagine how disappointed I would have been if I had used a Green drive as my primary drive. I'm sure they're great for data vaults but not worth it for the OS and programs. I HIGHLY recommend Black drives for use as primary drives!

I have gotten two of these drives so far. I did not get them at the same time. One was for a new computer build back in january of 2009. Another one was bought in july of 2009. The other drive was for a security system DVR. So far i have not seen any problems with these drives. I am not really sure what happened with other people and failing drives. Also these drives are not as loud as people are saying they are. They probaly installed incorrectly and are loose shaking around in the computer case. Mine are installed in a coolermaster haf932 case. The packaging that both drives came in were in great condition with a box inside of a box. The hard drive came in a smaller box filled with foam padding that let little to no rattling around while in shipment. So people that got drives with poor packaging. Also, not really sure what they are talking about either. My drives were bought with a pretty big space between them and both came the same exact way in which they should ship drives. Maybe it is caused by which warehouse they are coming out of. Not sure. I would like to know what western digital says about the warranty for these drives tho since they are OEM. If i ever have a problem within 5 years and western digital says contact the OEM dealer. I am coming right back to amazon.com and they better replace a bad drive. Other than that, these drives are great. I am thinking on getting another one because my other one is filling up quick with back-up's of windows vista ultimate edition 64 bit.

A hard drive of this caliber for $100 was well worth it for me. Your getting a 7200 rpm, 32mb cache, 1TB (the one that I got), and it's SATA 2. Well worth the price tag indeed. This IS the bulk version, so it means it just comes with the hard drive, plastic covering, and plastic side cases to hold it into place in the shipping box. I was sort of disappointed with the light packaging. I seriously thought something like this would have more protection, but the hard drive worked fine. If you guys, don't know how to install an internal hard drive into your comp, then you might want to do your homework by googling this up, or read some of the other reviews. Depending on your computer you might or might now hear the hard drive loading. I have it connected in a hard drive dock that sits on top of my computer, and I can hear it when ever I access data off of it after a while. It's not super load or anything, and probably your internal cooling fans would probably mask it. Another product that I would recommend people getting. I probably would be getting the 2TB version sometime later, so I can put more of my digital media on.

The quality of this drive is already well documented so I can't add much there. I had to initialize and format it over a USB port in order for Vista to recognize it on the eSATA port, but that's a Vista issue, and could be there was an easier way to go about it that I just didn't know.I did want to add some comments on the packaging. I was expecting to get something similar to the photos and descriptions others have left, but what I got was a little worse, a little better. I ordered mine through Tiger Direct (via Amazon) and received it in an oversized box, loose, simply wrapped in a single sheet of craft paper. No styrofoam, no bubble wrap, no anchoring blocks. Just a piece of paper.In fairness, though, the unit was not just loose in a static-bag as some of the reviewers' photos show -- mine came in one of those hard plastic clamshell covers that you can only open with like a razor knife or poultry scissors. On the top and bottom the case did have kind of a double walled conctruction, ostensibly to provide shock protection. I don't know how much, if any, additional protection this really provided vs the bag-only shipments people have gotten from other sources. The drive was functioning and shows no errors, but it does have me wondering if it was compromised in any way. My recommendation would be to either spend the nominal extra $ to order a retail unit and consider it a packaging, insurance, and peace of mind fee.

When i first got this item i was shocked at the packaging so i submitted photos here... whoever is not supervising these drives being sent out should be fired... read the ongoing comments... and it is also not just this drive, it is across the board from Amazon (Western Digital)... when i called WD direct they were very helpful and understanding... all worked fine from WD but the Amazon originated shipping was a joke by ANY standard... sooo... beware of the shipping... BTW the drive was damaged but did not show up till after the 30 day Amazon return policy expired... Amazon did not want anything to do with it... so i just warn all look at the photos and you make the call...otherwise the drive is excellent... it's a Western Digital Black Baby!sorry Amazon, but you need to fix what is obviously broken... please fix and stop wasting everyones time with returns and RMA's...namasteBTW the three star rating is balanced out... Amazon= 1 Star and Western Digital gets 5 Stars

For anyone wondering what the difference is between this drive and Western Digital Caviar Blue 640 GB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 3.5 Inch, 16 MB Cache, 7200 RPM SATA II WD6400AAKS:1. 32 MB cache compared to a 16 MB cache on their Blue line - This is not hugely noticeable but it does make a difference.2. 5 year warranty compared to 3 year warranty on the Blue. If you combine that with Western Digital's Data Lifeguard Diagnostics software and S.M.A.R.T. feature (which monitors hard disks for problems and potential failures), then you really don't have much to worry about with hard drive crashes.3. Construction - The Black line contains a dual processor and StableTrac, which secures the motor shaft at both ends to reduce vibration and keeps the platters more stable. The Blue line is only secured on one end.Considering this drive is only slightly more expensive than the Caviar Blue, there is really no reason anyone should get that drive over this. As of October 2009, this is probably the best drive out there right now for gaming and performance computing. I have benchmarked it with a Western Digital 150 GB VelociRaptor SATA 10,000 RPM 16 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive WD1500HLFS and other than the boot up time, the differences between the two drives was not that great. I would go with the Caviar Black and it's larger cache (and one less platter) for a MUCH cheaper price than a velociraptor drive as far as gaming goes.

FYI bought a pair of the 1tb blacks and they both failed in a raid 1 setup after 12 months and 13 months. R&R to WD at a total cost of $7 each. raid 1 rebuild w/o problems - raid one rocks. My system was down for 2 days. WD sent replacements shipped 2nd day air at their expense, before they rec'ed the returned bad drives. However, they charge my credit card for the replacements until they receive the return shipments. a 5 year dr should not have failed after 1 yr but they stand by their warranty. Both drives failed within 1 month of each other - strange!

An excellent drive, glad I spent a bit more! Using it as the main drive in my Mac Pro with 16-Gig RAM. It's amazingly fast, though just a bit noisier than the drive it replaced, a Seegate. Highly recommend this drive!

I bought this drive to replace my 250G drive that came with my Dell Dimension. The dell drive was ultra-quiet and that made this one sound like a bulldozer. Sometimes it would sound like a pot of water boiling. I must admit though, that either it got quieter as the weeks went by or I got used to the sound. I am a power user doing a lot of gaming so Caviar Black was my first choice. If you do not necessarily need the extra performance I would suggest getting the 1 TB Caviar Green. Nonetheless, this is a really excellent drive with a lot of storage space and you won't be disappointed.One thing though, if your drive is mounted sideways, that is, not in the same direction as your CD drive you may have a space issue with connecting a cable. If that is the case make sure you get a cable with a right angled connection. I ran into this problem and the case was a little hard to close.... not sure if i will have shorting issues with the cable in the future. Check the case you are using and see if the drives in there are using right angled cables and get one for this.

After installing a copy of Windows 7 over Win XP Pro on my 2006 vintage computer, I was pleased enough with the ease of installation to buy a larger, faster hard drive to replace the oem 250 gig drive. I shopped and read several reviews and decided to go with the WD OEM 750 gig size because of the cost. Reviews indicated this drive was "near" the WD 300 gig Raptor in overall performance.I had read about Amazon's packaging issues with hard drives but decided to order from them. The OEM drive was very well packaged!This was a bare drive. You can find any installation questions at the WD site. I had none. I have never restored a drive image to a new hard drive but using Windows 7's image creator, everything went flawlessly. Just be sure you have a large enough external hard drive to use for image creation. I might add that I made sure the old drive was disconnected before restoring to the new drive. Once everything was complete, then I could reuse the older drive as spare storage.The WD 750 gig OEM drive has plenty of capacity for my needs and should run my operating system for hopefully years to come. I am very pleased with it after a month of operation.

Drives live up to their manufacturer's specification. I am pleased with them. They are the first 2 Drives installed in a Drobo FS. Installation went effortlessly. The drives are connected across a network and perform according to their specifications.

Added to a Dell, which involved opening the case, snapping the drive into a platic housing and slding it in to the bay, hooking up the SATA cable (not included) to the drive and the motherboard (it took me about 20 minutes including dusting and cleaning up around my CPU). I closed the case on the comptuer, booted up , and formatted the drive (Windows XP Home) which took a minute to start but ran for about 4 hours. The SATA cable should cost less than 5 bucks. Best Buy had one for $20, I went to Micro Center to find one. In hindsight, I should have ordered the SATA cable from Amazon.

I have used many Western Digital drives over the years and I'd have to say the WD1001FALS has the most reliability issues of any of them. I have used a total of 4 of these drives. The first purchased on 9/2008 has worked reliably in an external enclosure (spinning 90% of the time). The second (purchased 6/2009) stopped spinning up after 3 days. The third (purchased 06/2009) stopped spinning up after 7 months or so. The fourth (warranty replacement 1/27/2010) stopped spinning up after 3 months. I have had no problems with other kinds of WD drives in the external enclosure that I used.I think I am going to be purchasing from another manufacturer in the future.

This is my first WD Caviar Black but after a week of use, it became my new favorite hard disk.I have HP desktop whose booting took almost 5 minutes even with 4GB memory. So I decided to try Caviar Black. Cloning 300GB booting disk to the new disk took an hour. As for booting from this disk, I was amazed to see that it took a couple of minutes.One thing I am little worried is its noise. It sounds like old ATA hard drive. I haven't experience this kind of disk sound from my old Caviar Green. But considering its speed gain, I guess it's small sacrifice.

This hard drive was for replacement for previous hard drive in a Dell XPS system. It is equivalent to the original drive and operated as expected. I then chose to remove this drive and replace original drive and will now use this drive in a build-my-own desktop system. I will write later on it's ease of setup, performance and overall functionality.9/9/11I chose to use this drive as a backup in my system. I am happy with it's performance, stability and reliability. I haven't had any problems. Access and transfer speeds are very good. Since it's identical as the original OS drive, it performs the same and it's very quiet too.Setup and versatility with this drive is easily accomplished. I may use it in a RAID array. I trust it for it's performance and reliability.

I added a couple of these to my Mac Pro and a year later they're still going strong. Installation was super easy (basically, just slide them into an empty hard drive slot) and they've been storing data without any complaints.

Very good hard disk. I bought two of these for raid 0, but one failed after 3 months. Fortunately i recovered all my data. The support is excelent and fast. They changed it in less than 15 days.Pretty fast, hard to configure with xp on raid 0, but if you get a good copy it will be easy.

I've been building systems for a few years and I remember when I first started, I was either going to go with Seagate or Western Digital hard drives. Someone once told me to go with Western Digital and you'll never look back! Well, that is certainly the case. I have 4 Western Digital Hard Drives and they are amazing. They are great quality, performance, and reliability that you need in a gaming system or as a simple home computer. I've never had any problems with any of the hard drives and I definitely make sure they are running cool. My hard drives range from 2 500GB SATA 2's, this one, and a 300GB Velociraptor. I never had any problems with them, and they work instantly. The drives are a piece of cake to install. Presently I have this product and the Velociraptor in my HAF 932 case. They are kept extremely cool. With the hard drive vents on the side, any warm air, exits through there. The casing the drives come in are great; no vibrations, no noise. I love the bubble wrap they come in :)I've used Seagate, Western Digital, Hitatchi and a few others. In my honest opinion, I love Western Digital. I've never had any problems, issues, or crashes with WD. Highly recommened!

This drive was purchased to replace a 74GB Raptor. The replacement was made as a part of my switch from XP to WIN 7.To start, I noticed no reduction in the speed of my system by replacing the older 10K RPM Raptor with the newer 7.2K RPM Caviar. I attribute this to SATA2 and the higher data density on the new drive. I was very pleasantly surprised to find how quiet the new drive is. I guess I never noticed how loud the Raptor was until it was gone.Amazon's price was the best I could find, if only by pennies.And, in case anyone else is considering it, WIN 7 is what Vista should have been. I was able to use the upgrade ([...] bucks - thanks, again Amazon) on the new 640GB Caviar to make a nice clean install. How? Install onto the new drive, but skip the part where you input the serial number. Do not activate (I don't think you can, anyway). After installation, REINSTALL from within WIN 7 itself and put the serial number in, this time. Then activate as usual. This avoids any registry editing, etc. YMMV, or course.If you use a new hard drive when you install WIN 7, leave your previous OS on the old drive. Then, you can always swap drives and easily get back to your old system, should you need to.

I've used these drives before, and they work very well (fast, reliable, etc.)I just ordered 2 from Amazon. They arrived with virtually no padding other than some flimsy plastic bumpers, and both drives were dead on arrival. Returned the Amazon ones and ordered from a different company. The new ones that were properly protected during shipping work great.

NEW PACKAGING & AMAZON SHIPPING SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!DO NOT PURCHASE FROM HERE!!!Ordered this drive because of the new "Frustration Free" packaging guarantee. Well AMAZON FAILED miserably there! Take my advice and DO NOT FALL VICTIM to this blatant lie. My hard drive was packaged in a box by itself with nothing! I repeat nothing to support the drive. NO air bubble packs, NO styrofoam, NO paper, NOTHING WHATSOEVER.Drive was placed into cardboard cutouts, which ripped during transit. the drive then fell out of the cutout holding and arrived loose banging around inside the box!AMAZON NEEDS TO WAKE UP!!!!! HARD DRIVES ARE VERY DELICATE!! Don't give me a guarantee that its going to be easy to open! give me a guarantee it is going to arrive wrapped in SHOCK ABSORBING FOAM as well as working and all together in one piece!

WD over the past year has crippled these drives making them unsuitable for a RAID installation. Specifically, they disabled "time-limited error recovery". For awhile one could run the WDTLER utility and turn this feature back on but now the feature has been completely disabled. Using these drives in RAID1 results in burning, churning, clicking, clacking, data corruption, and data loss.Their purpose in doing this is to get you spend $60.00 more for their RE drives.Maybe you don't want/need RAID now but by buying Western Digital you have eliminated the option to do so.For those unfamiliar with RAID, you can run two drives in tandem that mirror each other. If one fails, you pop in another drive and the array is rebuilt. With all you music, documents, software, and photos ready to be lost in an instant, RAID gives you the peace-of-mind that there is always a spare copy on hand.

I was somehow unsure on buying these HD after the comments on packing but at least for my 640GB WD HD i can assure u that i comes safe, it came inside a box with a support on both ends that keep the HD "in the air", as i buy other stuff the HD box came inside a bigger one with air packs, by the other reviews i think amazon correct the packing issue, so at least i can tell u to feel confident that u will get ur HD safe...

I received a hard drive in a large box. The hard drive was not wrapped with ANY protective material. The drive was put on one side of the box, which was dented, and the empty space was filled with the air pockets which did nothing to protect the drive during shipping. I don't know if it will work or not but I don't want to find out. I am going to return it in the same package if I can and let Amazon deal with it. This is an ongoing problem with Amazon apparently.

My 2 year old imac just died on me and it was the factory drive who failed. I had bad experiences with default Seagate drive, so I wanted to put in something more reliable this time, and this just serves purpose. Great product again from western digital.

I needed a high performance backup drive for additional storage. I do video editing of large video files and needed more storage to replace an existing backup drive. The Western Digital HD fit the bill. Amazon offers this great performing drive for a low price. I've used it for about 30 days without any installation or operational problems. It works as advertised.Like other reviewers have commented, OEM means cables, rails, screws, and install software are not included. Being a replacement HD meant no problems other than formatting, which Windows does for you. Check the BIOS for set up and you're good to go after formatting the HD. But if you need these installation hardware items, order an HD install kit from Amazon or the mfr. It may be cheaper to order the WD HD retail kit which has these items included. If you have any install problems, go to WD's website for help on installation issues including free drivers, if needed. You may need to go to your computer mfr's website for latest updates on BIOS. And don't forget if you have older versions of Windows xp or Vista, get their service pack updates as well.One last item, Amazon received lots of complaints on their shipping problems with these OEM HDs for the last several months from past reviews. I requested their FREE shipping option and wasn't disappointed. WD sends their HDs in a box that has thick foam padding around the HD. The HD is shipped in WD's standard electrostatic bag. Amazon ships the HD inside their box with the usual air filled plastic filler as an insulator. If I notice any external box damage or compressed insulators, then possible shock and damage to the HD may exist. If you notice damage, let Amazon know! In my case, no damage was noticed, so I proceeded with the installation without any problems.I'm happy with the WD HD product performance and Amazon!

I own a MAC Pro, so running cool and quiet is of paramount importance to me. I hesitated about getting a 7200rpm black caviar as opposed to a 5600rpm green drive because of potential whining noise problem, but I need a 7200 rpm drive for the speed (I work on Final Cut Pro a lot). I'm glad I bought the Black Caviar, it runs fast, cool and quiet. The MAC fan never kicks in even though my system is loaded with 4 internal drives and tons of memory and cards.

This drive installed quickly into my new Quad processor computer. However, it could not be formatted. Finally, upon partitioning it allowed a 1 terabyte section to be formatted for use while the other half of the drive remained unuseable. Western Digital Tech Support was useless and the employee suggested the unit be returned. I was impressed with the company's quick response which resulted in overnight shipping of a new drive without cost to me. Unfortunately, the same problem persisted with this drive. And subsequent support personnel were equally inept at diagnosing and solving this problem. My disatisfaction must have shown because I was finally connected with an advanced tech staff member who suggested updating the BIOS of my new NVIDIA 790 SLI motherboard. Problem was solved and Hard Drive is working well.Why couldn't WD have included some instructions with the drive?Why weren't the lower level tech staff better trained?If you get this drive ...update the BIOS and save some aggravation.

I've had this drive for about a month now. I am using it as part of an external drive array. Happy to report that this drive has lived up to expectations. It is quiet and my concerns about overheating in the drive enclosure have been proven wrong. I just wished the price was lower :(

We've bought a half-dozen of these Western Digital Black 640 GB drives in the past 18 mos. No problem whatever with any of them, even though some run 24/7. They are relatively quiet and fast and need relatively little air circulation to remain cool, and they are ultra-reliable and carry a five-year warranty. This review applies only to the Black (not the Green or Blue) version of the drive.

Purchased the WD 750GB Caviar Black SATA hard drive. Seems to be a good value for the money. I have about 3 times the storage with this drive as my old one. It's a little faster than my old drive which was also a 7200 rpm drive. I had hoped for even faster speeds since it had a 32mb cache but even the little gain in speed I did get was ok. After all it's a much bigger drive than what I had.As far as my purchase, everything went fine. I received a confirmation email and a day or two later received an email that it was shipped. It seemed to have sufficient packing to prevent damage. Of course this was a bare bones drive so it didn't come with any cables.Price was good.Shipping was good.Good value for the money.I can't complain! I'd definitely do it again.

After reading several poor reviews on the packaging I was hesitant to purchase a Hard Drive from Amazon. But for the price I was willing to take a risk and return the hard drive if needed. However, my product was shipped exceptionally well. Opening the exterior box I found an inner box protected with air bubble. The internal box had two soft plastic feet on each end suspending the hard drive that was wrapped in anti-static packaging. Apparently Amazon has fixed the poor shipping issue with Hard Drives.

I'm scared to even try this thing out...the packaging was horrible for something as sensitive as a HDD. It was packed with only a loose fitting cardboard cutout type of packing, which still allowed it shift a lot in every direction. It wasn't even sealed...WTF? Hopefully this thing works...I'm only wrighting this now as to how poor the packaging is so as to let other know before they order what to expect. I know that WD make very reliable drive and I will rate this review based on that but, Amazon needs to put a little more care in making sure that there products are received in a manner which will satisfy it's customers.

brought life back to an old mac with a dead hard drive with this minty new pretty quick pretty large hard drive. install on the mac wasnt as simple as on a pc, but it was pretty straight forward and the hard drive continues to perform well.

I purchased 3pcs. Caviar Black 750GB drives and SATA cables several weeks ago to expand storage on an HP ML110 server. Everything installed first time no problem. I can't provide any quantitative measure of drive performance. I'm satisfied with the extra storage capacity.Before purchasing, I read many Amazon reviews about sloppy packaging. I purposely ordered 3 drives with cables in the hope that, if shipped together, the multiple items would require packing with extra care. 1 box with 3 drives arrived. 2 of the drives were boxed inside with a rigid custom molded insert which seems fine. One drive was bubble wrapped loosely inside its own box. The 3 boxes were padded with air bags inside a larger box. I don't know why the one drive was packed differently as three well packaged drives would easily fit inside the larger box. Anyway I feel Amazon could do a better job of packaging these mechanically sensitive items.

I ordered two of these drives for my relatively new i7 computer in hopes that I could raise my windows experience score above 5.9. I had been using two non-raid configured 640 GB Caviar blue drives and thought the black versions connected in RAID 1 might help speed things up a bit. However, the windows score for the drives which was the limiting thing for my system did not change. It was still 5.9. The drives are working just fine and are only a little noisier than the blue versions.The packaging was sufficient since they both work, but wasn't as good as the packaging on the blue drives. The blue versions came in nice foam rubber filled boxes within the shipping box. These were protected by bubble wrap.

I bought 2 of these for my Mac Pro, which came with 2 x 1TB drives at $299 each. These drives cost 1/3 at Amazon. I was pleasantly surprised to find they are IDENTICAL to the 1TB drives that came with my Mac Pro, which i had in a RAID-1 configuration. Installation was a cinch. Turn off Mac Pro, take cover off the tower, pull out the drive guides in bays 3 and 4, screw in the drive guides to the WD 1TB drives, push in the 2 drives into bays 3 and 4, put the cover back on the tower, restart the mac. The finder saw the drives, and asked if I want to open the drive app or my RAID card application. I opened the RAID card app, started up a new raid set, set drives 3 and 4 to a RAID 1 config, and off it went. A few minutes later, I had a second RAID-! drive on my desktop. This was so easy, to get up on my Mac Pro, its unbelievable. If you have a Mac Pro, buy these drives as is. your MAC pro has all of the hardware to install them. All you need is a phillips head screwdriver. Totally painless. If no RAID card, even easier. install as above, and the finder will give you the disk drive app, which you can use to put the disks on your desktop for use. Amazing price, totally easy setup.

i use this hd as my c drive ad it work great buy it fail so quickly and of curse i lose all my data,i just install windows in my old but reliable wd velociraptor 300gb i will wait for the price of the new velociraptor 600gb slow down.
