The TP-Link TL-SG1008D 8-Port Unmanaged Gigabit Desktop Switch is a lightweight, consumer grade switch. I am currently using it in connection with my Blu-ray player, set-top player, Wii, and other entertainment devices. The switch has a nice transfer rate, not boggy or too slow. The passive cooling is relatively quiet, but I cannot say how effective it is as it is in an air conditioned house. It may be louder in a less climate controlled environment. The lights on the unit are adequate, and the connections are nice and tight, no sloppy. I believe the TP-Link TL-SG1008D 8-Port Unmanaged Gigabit Desktop Switch is on par with similar Netgear or Dlink devices, and may even be a slightly better value than the Dlink.A decent, inexpensive, home use switch.

It's easy to run out of Ethernet ports at home or at work. Your home router probably only has one or four Ethernet ports. And at work, your IT department has probably only activated one or two Ethernet ports at your desk. For me it's like pulling teeth to get IT to activate another port at my desk. An inexpensive switch like this one is a quick and simple way to add four more ports to my network. (Yes, it's a 5 port switch, but you have to use one of them for the line in, so you really only get 4 accessible ports to use for other connections.)There's nothing to install or configure. Just run a patch cable from a live Ethernet port and connect it to this switch and plug the switch's power into the wall. You quickly get 10Mb/100Mb/1Gb connectivity, depending on your network configuration. It's quick and simple and works great.

We lived in a cramped apartment and everything is so close together I just thought I would run cable to all of my items and that would make my equipment more responsive with faster speeds. I was wrong, the router I was using couldn't handle the traffic and made everything drag. I got this since the reviews were so good and I was surprised how much faster it made things. My WDtv Hub use to drag and stutter but after I got this the files are running with no wait time at all, I have 5 things hooked up and it's not even breaking a sweat. I was going to go back to using a wireless router again but I gave this a try and I'm glad I did it is much cheaper, easy to set up and can handle a lot of traffic without slowing down.

This switch runs much cooler and quieter than the last gigabit switch I had. It's also significantly smaller so takes up less desk space. Another thing I liked was the power cord connector was small and didn't take up 2 outlets like my old switch. Only advantage my older switch had over this one is that the led lights on the front changed color to tell you when you connected at 1000mbps vs 100mbps. This one just has a single green light on each port when it is connected. Also, it didn't come with any cat cables like my old switch but that's probably one way they kept the price down.Anyways, seems to work great for what I use it for which is to bypass the wi-fi when moving large files or streaming high definition. Correctly auto senses and runs at 1Gbps on my Windows 8 and Mac mountain lion machines.

I am a network junkie so when I saw this device I had to try it. Unfortunately, I did not think it through to decide exactly what I would do with it. With all the devices in my home being wireless, I seem to have little need for a wired-only switch. I did notice another reviewer mentioned wiring their home entertainment network and that makes good sense but my home entertainment network is too simple to yield any improvement. A friend mentioned possibly having a home lab network for testing other devices in the future and that seems to be the only thing I might consider trying. Take it from me and think about the applications you might want to try before buying a wired network switch.

Length:: 3:16 MinsThe TP-Link Desktop 5-Port Gigabit Switch is a well performing desktop switch that you simply plug in and start using. No configuration needed like routers. it will automatically detect the speeds of the connected devices from 10MB/100MB/1GB. While the indicator lights do not show what speed is in use, it shows if the port is active or not.The power saving mode turns off ports that are not in use coupled with detection for cable length reduces power consumption up to 75% compared to other switches. With no fan, it is silent in performance and stayed cool in tests. This switch when compared to others twice the price provided the same performance and adjusted for any device I plugged in.Brackets are present on the back for mounting (minus the screws)See the video for the rest.

The TP-Link switch has such a sleek, smooth small profile that it fits neatly in with desktop electronics, and it gets the job done. This is an excellent ethernet switch for anyone interested in minimizing additional EMF "electrosmog" exposure, by providing a non-WiFi option. With five ports and good design, this switch handily provides an elegant, fast, powerful solution to address one's ethernet connectivity needs.Best of all, this switch is easy to use, and dependably reliable. It works the first time out of the box and every time thereafter with care-free operation... without ever over-heating. It's wonderful to have a piece of equipment that works so well you literally never have to give it another thought.Highly recommended!

I wanted to hard-wire the network for my home theater setup. Most notably, an Xbox 360 (100Mbit), a PS3 (1000Mbit), an AppleTV 3rd gen (100Mbit), and the television itself (LN52B630, unsure about speed). Previous, I had the Xbox plugged in directly to my Airport Extreme over CAT5e, and used the wireless on the PS3/AppleTV. However, I wanted to hard-wire the AppleTV for airplay mirroring to speed things up a bit. And if I was going to split the one gigabit connection into more than one, I figure I might as well wire up everything, and a 5 port gigabit switch was exactly what I needed.Looking around Amazon, this guy had really top notch reviews. Online research showed NewEgg reviewers giving this little guy glowing reviews, with a few nags here and there. There are a few neat hacks people have done to make this switch even more useful, but I won't get into those. I figured for $20, this little guy should do the trick. Plus, Amazon has a great return policy for faulty products, so why not give it a try. I've been burned by high quality names dying out on me for no good reason, so I figured I'd give this little guy a go.So far, fantastic! I wasn't able to do a very good test to max out the line speed, but the speed did not change between no switch and the switch over the same wire. I checked all ports and they all worked at 1000BaseT just fine, and latency was consistent across all ports. Also, I confirmed that mixed modes caused no issues, as noted by my above devices. Of the 5 ports, 2 are gigabit (uplink to the Airport Extreme and the PS3), and the AppleTV/Xbox are 100Mbit - the TV is most likely 10BaseT, but it may be 100BaseT. Everything is working together flawlessly, though since it's for a home theater setup, it's not being taxed heavily. If it dies on me or if things end up not working out, I will be sure to come back and update this review. But I figured I'd toss my two cents for other people running into my situation.

The TL-SG1005D is a 5-port gigabit switch that is inexpensive and "just plain works". However the front panel design could have been better. Also note the case is plastic not metal, which is cheaper.THE GOOD:+ Support Jumbo frames up to 9K (according to the manual)+ Front panel LED flash rate is slow enough to easily see from across the room.+ Like most modern switches this one is "green" - uses less power for shorter Ethernet cables and powers down unused ports to save energy.+ Single-chip switch controller is heatsinked for better heat dissipation.THE BAD:- Wall mount screws are not included.- The front panel LEDs are single color (green) and do not change color to indicate "gigabit device connected" like some other switches. Thus you cannot tell if a device is gigabit or not from looking at the front panel.- There is only a single LED per port and not separate Link/Activity LEDs like on some other switches. This may have been done to keep costs down.- The Power LED is the same color as the Port LEDs. I would have preferred the Power LED be a different color (red) than the green LEDs used for the ports.OVERALL it's a good choice for a gigabit switch. However I would have really liked to see a way of determining connected device speed from looking at the front panel. Be sure to check out the 8-port version of this same switch (TP-Link TL-SG1008D 8-Port Unmanaged Gigabit Desktop Switch) as it may be only a couple of dollars more.I hope this has been helpful!

The TL-SG1008D is an unmanaged 8-port Gigabit switch, which like any other unmanaged switch works straight out of the box. Power it on, plug in your Ethernet cables and watch the LEDs as traffic goes through it. The ports are auto-sensing and support auto-MDI/MDIX.This switch adopts Green Ethernet technology, which supports power saving features. It'll automatically power down ports that aren't being used (no link or no connection because the device it's connected to is shut down).Although not pertaining to the functionality of the switch itself, the power supply is angled sideways to limit power strip space usage to just one outlet.

I've got my whole house wired with Cat5e, but haven't yet installed a switch big enough for all my connected devices. Since I was a couple of ports short, I grabbed this switch to get me through. It's worked great. Plug in the power, connect one cable from the switch to the router, the other cables from the devices to the switch, and the unit takes care of the rest. No software/firmware to worry about, just plug it in and it works. I haven't had any issues with it so far, and the price seems quite fair. Plugged in, works as expected. Transfer speeds between computers more than doubled (My computer speed is likely the limit, not the network.) Note that if all your machines are only 10/100 then won't see any improvement at all! On the other hand, this switch is not a lot more than 10/100 switches so it's better to be "Future-Proof" since your next computer will likely have Gigabit networking.I was using a Linksys 10/100 switch which is less than half the physical size, so I was expecting something smaller. I suspect they use the same chassis for their 8 channel switch - can't complain since their tooling save may explain the very reasonable price for this gigabit switch.

I have WiFi a-plenty (both AirPort Express and Linksys E2500), but nothing beats a direct line for streaming. This is perfect for connecting my AirPort Express (which has only one output) to my Apple TV, PVR, Logitech TV Cam, and other media-center equipment. Since I can use only one connection at a time, this has everything wired when I want it. So my little stack (AirPort Express and Apple TV atop this switch) takes up very little space and, except for all the LED lights, is unobtrusive. This unit is fairly specialized and not many will need it, but I'm sure it has more uses than mine. It is just what I was looking for, but didn't know it existed.

Most of my experiences with small switches of this nature is that they have a lifespan of 2-3 years before cooking or dropping packets. while I have only been using this one for a short time and it works flawlessly in my man cave media cabinet, at this price point, its a great buy even if it doesn't last for 2 years - much cheaper than additional cable runs.I have 3 of these in my house now... all working as expected.

However, it also refused to run some of our Logitech gear which almost never has a problem. Tried it with the security...nothing. Tried it with the Revue...nothing. So, no vonage, no security, no revue...had to disconnect this and plug all back into the Netgear box which ran everything fine.

If you've got a mixed network of 100 Mbps (Fast Ethernet) and 1000 Mbps (Gigabit) equipped machines, this will not only provide your network with switching and throughput your Gigabit machines can take advantage of, it will also improve the performance of your Fast Ethernet devices by providing store-and-forward switching. It has improved throughput on my mixed-mode network considerably even though I only have one device with a Gigabit network card. Streaming videos from my desktop Plex server to my Roku and from iTunes to my AppleTV is now totally seamless, without buffering or either device dropping off the network.I should note that my Roku and AppleTV were previously connected by 150Mbps wifi, and my new setup is connected as such..Desktop (Plex media server/iTunes) > TP-Link Gigabit Switch > DSL gateway/router > Cisco 10/100 Switch > Streaming boxes(Roku and AppleTV)

Can the seller confirm that what he is selling is the latest or at least the fanless model? Other than that, the 16-port TP-Link has served me well for years. I'd like to replace it with the fanless 24-port model (if it exists). I don't see any other avenue to ask this very important question before I make my purchase. Please advise. Thanks.

Very hard to write a long review for this; once upon a time, if you had one ethernet port and a bunch of devices you wanted to connect to the network, you'd buy a hub. For light traffic that was fine, but a even a rudimentary switch like this one sends packets only where they're intended to go, and performance is going to be better. This device is about as low-end as they come, but it works and the pricing is astonishing. $18? How is that even possible?

I'm impressed to see gigabit at these prices. The lights are clear to see. The box is ok. I've also got a white Asus gigabit switch that is a little more unobtrusive.Overall. Fine product.

This is an excellent little switch. It runs cool and quiet and does the job. Being unmanaged is also a plus, especially in a small environment and situation. The speeds are quite good and haven't noticed any slowdowns or bottlenecks. As with most switches, longevity is a plus and I trust the TP-Link brand to last a good while. Highly recommended.

I'm upgrading all the 10/100 hubs and switches in my network in anticipation of equipment with gigabit NICs, but already I can see the difference that replacing a couple hubs with an unmanaged switch can make. It may not be as stylish as some brands, but who's looking? It works, and that's all that counts.

Using a standard MTU I have been able to push 79MB/sec (Bytes not bits/sec)sustainedFor the speed of hard drives in most of my systems I'm pretty well pushing the max throughput of the drives, including being able to burst at over 90MB/s in the initial data push.Considering I couldn't find a cheaper gigaswitch the fact that I can't find a complaint should make this an easy choice.

Great product! We run 3 lap tops, PS3, Dell desk top and 2 printers (one wireless). My family is ALWAYS on the net. Son plays online on both his laptop and PS3. This switch gave us the ability to speed up our wireless with the flip of a switch. It's quiet and cool...doesn't heat up. I am getting one for him to take to school where there will be 4 of them in one room, all gaming. Great price as well!

For my house my home network is way too complicated (two people but way too many devices and a home office)This integrated easily into my home network allowing me to move three network computers onto one router making them easier to network across desktops and laptops.

I was able to plug this switch into my cable and add two computers and a printer without any trouble whatsoever. I still have one port unused, so I am more than covered on that area. The price is good, the switch works well and without trouble, and I am looking forward to using less electricity with this switch over my previous one.All in all, a good device at a good price.
