10-minute install
Worked great right out of the box, simply had to plug it in and it grabbed an IP automatically and I was able to start plugging devices into it.

It inspired me to make some adjustments to my home network setup and now I have redone my entire network and have things running into the switch instead of directly into my router. Everything works great, and was able to free up the power cord from my desk phone by powering the phone with PoE.

The switch was dead simple to install, it was plug-and-play. I went into the GUI just to poke around but if I recall correctly everything was already set-up and you don't even need to do that step. The GUI is pretty basic but if you have used Netgear routers in the past, it is very familiar and easy to figure out.

My only complaint is that I wish the ports were on the back instead of the front, but I think this device is built for more advanced setups than I currently have, in which case you would have this switch mounted on a rack or accepting patch cables from a patch panel.

The 8 ports are more than enough for me now, and technically I only needed one PoE port so its great to be able to grow into this device. I may purchase an access point or purchase another router to use as an access point and expand my network.

Either way, I know this device works great and will serve me well for years to come. Thanks, Netgear! I always love Netgear products.

Management GUI Problematic
I have an unmanaged TP Link switch that works excellent and was excited to add this managed switch with POE to my expanding network. I was able to change my network adapter settings allowing me to access the device's default IP address and the logged into the GUI where I was able to change the IP address to something that conforms to my network. When I saved the configuration I was booted out, which makes sense since the new IP address I provided is on a different subnet.

I was able to use the new IP address to access the switch, but after about a minute I suddenly lost access and could not get back into the device. I reset it back to factory and logged into 192.168.0.1 (default) and changed it again and was again booted out of the new IP address as before. Eventually, I hooked it up to my network and it worked well as an unmanaged switch, but I still could not access the GUI. After a couple hours I gave up and returned the item.

Perhaps I was doing something wrong and this could have been solved by TP Link customer support but I don't know why the switch should be so difficult to access.

Cheap unmanaged switch for my home
I moved into a new construction recently. The home was pre-wired with CAT6 cable, but there wasn't a switch at the panel to connect all my devices. I bought this so I could move my wireless cable modem/wireless router to another room instead of having it sit on my carpet in the corner of my room. I had some issues with it initially when I tried to connect my computer and TV to the switch, and even tried assigning static ip address to the devices. I ended up moving the modem (which has a built in router and lan ports) to another room and attached the devices directly to the modem and the switch to my network outlet then they finally worked. Technically it works, but if I had to do it all over again I would have spent the extra $7 and got the managed TP-Link (easy) switch instead of spending hours trying to figure out why the switch wouldn't recognize my devices even though the lights were on. If you're not tech savvy do yourself a favor and just spend the extra money on the managed switch instead of tinkering with network settings.

16 port smart switch with 8 ports poe but no PoE
I originally purchased this switch to support my cisco WAPs and a few IP cameras which needed to be on separate vlans. First lets start with the VLAN control on this "smart" gui. Its horrible and non-intuitive. In order to get a basic access port set up, you have to navigate between two different screens for PVID and also have it untagged for that particular vlan in the 802.1Q vlan tab and remove all other members. Makes no sense. Also, the silly way they have it done is with radials per vlan, not per interface so there is alot of info hidden until you input the magic number on the vlane line. But that wasnt even the deal breaker for this device.

The fatal flaw is that PoE stops being live after a reboot. If you plug in a device that needs PoE, the port does not power up. You have to reboot the entire switch, with the PoE device plugged in, before it decides to provide power. Obviously, I dont want to reboot my switch every time I plug something in. At this point, id rather use power injectors than this silly switch.

Review # 13,237... What can I add?
Nothing... Just a simple bit of praise for the little switch that could.

I purchased the 8 port, unmanaged model without POE.

This is a simple switch for use to expand simple networks wired connectivity. It can be used to add additional ports to a typical home router. Or it can be used in more complex installs as long as the user understands its limitations. As its an unmanaged switch, this box cannot process VLAN tags. I have not tested whether it can pass these or not. If I do I will update.

In my install I'm branching this from a managed switch. I configued the downlink port on the main switch to pass untagged traffic to my desired sub-net to this swicth. This switch feeds my streaming players and game systems. This allows me to free up airtime on my wifi and provide a more stable and fastest possible connection to my devices. The link indicators are small and not distracting even considering these are on my entertainment center.

Bottom line, its plug an play for anyone who doesn't moonlight as a network administrator. Its also a cheap and viable option for those looking expand soho networks as long as the branch is single network. For $20 I can't recommend a better switch.

Not a completely DUMB switch as I wanted
The negative reviews scared me some but it turned out they have nothing to do with this unmanaged, a.k.a. "dumb" switch SG108 I wanted and purchased. I wanted a layer-2, dumb switch, no vpn, no vlan, no link aggregation, a simple "splitter" for my flat LAN. There is nothing to install or configure, it's totally plug&play. I had only 3 requirements: metal box, low power consumption, and cool running, see pics. This SG108 power supply makes no noise and is rated 9v 0.6a which is comparable to your iPhone charger. After running 4 HD streams for 1/2 hour, housing temp feels ambient to me, not even warm, vs my 15 years old which ran 20+F above ambient. There are vent holes on both sides and of course no fan. If I find anything of value may come back for a long term review. If I had to do this again, I probably would had pay another $15 for the dumb Netgear which looks a bit better aesthetically to me, but for a box that's hidden in a closet anyways this tp-link should perform just fine.

UPDATE: I failed to notice this unmanaged box knows and acts over 802.1p %*&^#*. I already got QOS on my firewall and don't want to double-QOS so I may be forced to get the managed one instead because there is no way to turn off QOS on this box. DIGRESS on the Netgear, TP-link got easier to see at-a-glance amber+green LEDs, Netgears are, all jumbled greens.

GREEN UPDATE: 8 ports (hardware V3) unmanaged consumes 2 watts @idle, and up to 3 watts with 5 active ports

Enterprise features at a SOHO price, sturdy metal housing with wall-mounting slots
My mother lives in one of those sprawling rambler houses that has been added onto by various people over the years and the result is a challenging WiFi environment as no matter where the router is, there are a lot of walls and things between the router and somewhere. I ended up getting a pair of older enterprise grade mesh access points and then needed a gigabit switch supporting POE for the backbone. I went with this after scouring reviews as it ticked all the boxes and seemed to offer a good value. So far I've been impressed, it's a managed switch that allows me to set up multiple VLANs and assign specific ports to them and some other handy features that I don't typically see outside of corporate environments. Installation was painless and it has been up and running for several months now without any issues at all. The only complaint I have is that while the switch itself has mounting slots in the bottom enabling it to be mounted to the wall, the separate AC adapter does not. I ended up having to use a pair of those zip ties that have screw holes in the end to attach the power brick to the wall near the switch so it wouldn't be dangling on the garage floor. Other than that this is a solid switch that just quietly sits there doing exactly what a switch is supposed to do, I have not had to go over there and play IT guy even once since I set it up.

Stopped working after 6 months
Device was working, albeit in a spotty fashion, for about six months - occasionally devices would be unable to connect until after restarting the switch. Today, it seems to have up and died completely - nothing is able to get an IP address while connected, as if my DHCP server just isn't there. Was fine yesterday; went to my computer today, saw the dreaded "No Internet" symbol. Rebooted the switch, nothing - only one side of the link lights was flashing for each port. Checked a different computer connected to my router that doesn't go through the switch and that one was fine. Wifi was fine. Rebooted my router anyway to be safe. Still nothing. Rebooted the switch again, nothing. Plugged the lead cable to the switch directly into my computer and I was able to get an IP address with no issues. Replaced with another switch entirely and the problem disappeared. So, overnight, something happened to the switch that caused it to block clients on the other end from connecting to my DHCP server, and effectively made itself useless. No bueno.

All my devices now see each other!
I have a WIFI MESH system set up. (Highly recommend one for people with weak WiFi areas in their homes)

So internet comes into my house through my internet providers router then to my mesh system (AmpliFI by Obuntu but there are plenty of systems out there)
then my Wi-Fi signals are parsed from there.
Great. Fantastic coverage through my home.

Issue i had:
I have 7 devices that require a LAN connection instead of Wi-Fi. I had to use the LAN ports on router (4) and on my Mesh Wi-Fi router (4)
they all got connection to the internet but couldn't see each other across routers. Now Alexa couldn't control my Sonos speakers, media center and NAS drive media.

solution. got this switch(cheap as hek too).
plugged into Wi-Fi mesh router and plugged everything into the switch. VIOLA success!
All my Wi-Fi can see all my wired devices.
No admin required on my part. just plug and play. Smart and easy.
As long as it holds up this is money very well spent

Great upgrade for existing 10/100 POE switch. Fan noise is minimal.
I bought this to increase port availability on an existing 8 port 10/100 switch that was full. The original 4 POE ports were not GB and was causing lagging and stutters in my NVR recording with the attached cameras and IP phone. I also had been adding other hardware requiring hardwire connections and needed the extra ports.
This gave me the extra ports and the GB speed to help smooth out my NVR recording/viewing.

My previous switch was fanless and I was concerned about this unit being too loud for my small office where half of my IT equipment is located. The switch is now mounted 12" behind my monitors on the wall and with the house quiet, I can barely notice the fan running. It is audible but not enough to cause disruption while working or during video meetings. If I ever feel that the fan gets louder, there is a quiet fan direct replacement that can be easily swapped out for under $20.

I like that fact that I was initially able to just plug and play with the switch. My router auto assigned an address and everything was up and running. Later I found the new address, logged in, changed the PW, and updated the software. Easy Peasy.
I like that I have options with the switch if I choose to or I can just run with it as is. Power draw is minimal with the cameras and phone and the switch never gets warm.
So far I am very happy with the purchase and will buy another when the time comes for the other side of the house.

Works as intended
Very happy with this. We live in a house that has an architect metal roof as well as a slab instead of a basement, and ceramic tiles on the floor ... so we have a problem with the internet reaching all the places in our 1800 sq. foot one floor home. In fact, I was using the regular router/modem and two extenders just to get the signal to the next room so we could watch Netflix on the TV. We decided to go a different way ... we moved the modem / router to the living room and put one of these boxes in each office (which go in different directions with the living room in the middle). NOW we have the Netflix set up as a wired connection and not wireless and it all works good as gold. These boxes also work well because my husband and I each have two laptops that we can now connect with an ethernet cable if we are in the office and still have the ability to connect wirelessly if we are in the living room. These (two) boxes made our home life much much easier with less frustration. GREAT PRODUCT.

Reliable, inexpensive, well-build 8-port dumb switch
I own three of these, purchased over many years. They are rock solid and have solid metal construction. I’ve never had a single dead port. It’s a dumb switch, so if you know what that is (i.e. if you know this isn’t a router or a managed switch), then this is just what you need.

Minor feature I really appreciate: it comes with four little rubber pads to use as feet, but it also comes with two mounting holes on the bottom for a flush wall mount (however it does not come with mounting hardware). This gives it a lot of versatility—though it should be noted that you can’t easily switch back and forth because the rubber pads are adhesive. But you could always make the mounting screws stick out a bit from the wall so the switch could be mounted even with the rubber pads installed as long as you didn’t mind that the switch wasn’t flush mounted.

great price, easy setup
some weird rating question, in the rate features area, however for this product i would point out some good about it, first, it is very value for money, it was on the great discont, i brought it almost half of its original price. secondly, this is unmanage switch, which does not has any UI, so far as what i know. i could plug and use in a second. it barely needs any setup.

and this is how you plug it in

internet ----router ---- switch.(doesn't matter which port)

overall i give it four start, because its quality and design, but with no other special features, so i took one start out of it.

a brief explaintation for the rating area.

i give it one start for wifi signal, because it does not have any wifi signal( of course i know it is not suppose to have any wifi, i think the selection should not be shown.
and i have never use tech support, so i did not rate it

and i give it one start for user interface, because it does not have any user interface, (which it does not suppose to have any UI)

Excellent Switch
Works exactly as it should, 1 in from router and 7 out. Gigabit speed is no problem and the amber vs green lights make it simple enough to tell if you're getting the expected speed of your device. I like the metal body as it is very sturdy and supports my router on top no problem. Only con that I have found to be very common in the network switch space is the power connects on the opposite side of all the RJ45 ports. It drives me nuts to have wires coming out opposite sides when I need them to all go in the same direction. Easy enough to run the wire under the unit and out the back but the connector still juts out about an inch.

Failed in less than 3 months. Poor customer service.
Bought on March 16th. Failed today. Been on hold with TPLink for 30 minutes. Still on hold.

The device simply stopped functioning. Now I need to pay to return to TP link and wait for the replacement.

Update: Amazon made good on the refund and shipping NOT TP_Link. TP-Link finally answered me on Facebook to explain how the problem was with me.

NEWER UPDATE:
Amazon sent me a new unit which failed on 14 August less than 60 days after receiving it. I have been corresponding with TP-Link for almost a month with no movement other than sending more tests. I am an engineer and have done extensive testing on the unit. They asked me to get "Another 48V power supply" and try it out to insure the power supply is not the problem even after measuring correct voltage out of the power supply.

Since this is a critical piece of a network I assume they want the customer to get frustrated and simply buy something else.

Straight Forward and Works Great....
Not much to write about for this switch, other than it works exactly how you want it to. I purchased one of these to start so I could add on to my Deco wifi network that I just upgraded to, and it worked right out of the box. I have since ordered 4 more of these, and a 16 port switch as I want the 16 port switch to be the main switch off the wifi router, and then these 8 port switches will be routed throughout the house. Wifi is great, but I want to ensure my signal is not overwhelmed with too many competing items on the network trying to use wifi. I have several tv's, cameras, and IOT's on my network, so Im hoping to keep everything running smooth by releasing the load a bit and hard wiring what I can. Totally worth it.

Плохо

Bought this product twice; both eventually required constant resets to work.
I bought this product twice; I already had the 5-port product from the company that worked like a dream, but eventually needed one with more ports--buying it from this company seemed to be the obvious choice. The first one worked perfectly for two months, when the my ethernet status on the computer said connected, but no network signal. After trouble-shooting unsuccessfully for an hour I just called it a night; it was working again the next morning. A week later I had the same problem, but a friend suggested it may be the hub that's acting up, rather than my computer. (The WiFi was working, so the router was established to not be the problem.) So I swapped out this 8-port hub back to the 5; lo and behold, it worked. I switched it back--didn't work again. I chalked it up as a faulty product and asked for a replacement.

Replacement got here, and the day after I had set it up (today, 12/16/20), same issue popped up again. This time unplugging the power from the hub and plugging it back in seems to make it work (I can't remember if that's something I thought of trying the first time; I'm fairly certain I did but not 100%). I've had to do this reset four times today. It works great when it actually is, but I can't see myself sticking with this product if I'm going to have to plug and unplug it every few hours. I'm considering daisy-chaining a second 5-port to my first one over trying to put up with this. Will give it a few days and hope it gets better, but if not I don't think I can give this product a third chance.

Do not use inside another network
I installed this switch in a closet to allow a few devices to share a singular ethernet connection back to my main network. Massive mistake. This switch by default takes IP address 192.168.0.1 and then acts as a DHCP server if one is not present. I configured the router to instead get an IP address from the main DHCP server on my network - a router with IP address 192.168.0.1. When the power briefly went out to my house the switch reverted back to factory settings. This meant that I now had two routers on my network advertising the gateway address of 192.168.0.1. The symptoms of this was the internet just randomly not working for short bits of time because the TP-Link switch was poising the routing of traffic to the outside. Once I figured out what was causing the issue I once again changed the switch to get its IP from DHCP but it seems that if this switch ever loses power it reverts back. Given that in order to reliably get to the switch's configuration interface I have disconnect it from the network, connect it directly to a computer, hard code the computer's IP, then update the router config, connect everything back, etc.... It's just not worth the headache.

3.- Puedes conectar varios devices via ethernet
