If you just want an ADSL modem/router to hook up a desktop and provide wireless DHCP service, this product is probably fine. Setup for that is a snap. For anything more advanced, I'd suggest looking elsewhere. There are two crucial problems with this router. The first is that it doesn't support address reservation, so port forwarding is unreliable. Suppose you have two desktop boxes on your LAN, alpha and beta. Say you have a mail server on alpha and an web server on beta. You can set up "virtual servers" in your router to forward, for example, incoming connections on port 25 to alpha and on port 80 to beta. Old routers, like my antique 2wire 1701HG, resolved local hostnames, so you could set things up exactly like that, New routers don't resolve LAN hostnames, so rather than sending incoming port 25 connections to alpha, you must send them to alpha's LAN IP address, say 192.168.0.3. But this address is assigned dynamically by DHCP, so it can change, wrecking port forwarding. Normally, this problem is fixed with "address reservation", which lets you permanently lease certain LAN IP addresses to certain MAC identified machines. The Tenda W300D doesn't have this feature. Now, in general, it won't change a connected machine's IP address as long as you (1) don't turn off or disconnect that machine and (2) don't reboot the router. However, rebooting is routine on account of ...The second crucial problem is that after 12 to 24 hours the router gets buggy with ssh connections from the outside. This is hard to explain precisely because it's bound to have to do with firmware problems. The symptom is that after a while any ssh connection form the outside (WAN) freezes up: Log in, cd to a directory with plenty of files, "ls" the files and the output freezes after 6 or 7 lines. Sometimes it will revive in 10 minutes or so, but usually not. I fooled with QoS settings, but they seem to have no effect. I imagine VPN's are out of the question. I know NoMachine NX sessions fail to connect once the router has lapsed into this state. This is only a problem from the outside. These problems don't seem to occur on the LAN. Rebooting the router fixes the problem. For a few hours.Support is thin. The browser GUI is what you would expect, which is fine. There is a manual on a CD that comes with the thing. It's essentially just a copy of the browser GUI. There's a phone number on the box that's supposed to be good from something like 9 to 6 in the US (uh oh). You can get a recording at it whenever you want. There's an email address that I wrote but never heard back from. There's a Skype alias that I called and talked to a nice fellow in China. We couldn't understand each other, so he gave me an email address to which I wrote. And got no response. After a month of this, I ordered a TP-Link TL-WR841ND 300Mbps Wireless N Router (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0034CN0AS). It's not absolutely perfect, but it's pretty close, it's about the same price, and it supports flashing open source software if you need it. It's just a router, but it was a snap to configure my old 1701HG as a dumb modem for it. You'll be smarter than me if you order it first rather than second.

This is actually my first modem, so unfortunately my knowledge on others is rather limited. Previous to getting this/ my recent DSL line, I was using wireless hotspots around the area, but they started to disappear and become more unstable, so I caved and got my own connection. As you know you can get a router from a provider for a rental fee each month, which to be honest is just a rip-off, so to avoid that I hit the interwebs to find something that would suit my needs and my wallet. Due to the devices we use in the house, I wanted to get a modem/router combo so I could have wifi in the house and not spend way too much on the device itself. I saw a lot of them in various prices, but this one caught my eye. I was skeptical at first given that there weren't any reviews for this currently, so I went digging around online, which to be honest, didn't get me too far. Even if you do a search through google shopping, you will find like one review that gives the product 2-3/5 stars, and says it is great at what it does, but it needs more features. Given that it still got a fairly positive review, I decided to bite the bullet and give it a shot anyway.I got it about three weeks ago from today, and really wanted to give it a test before doing any sort of review. I actually have photos of what the device looks like bundled up and what it comes with in the photo gallery for those interested in seeing what it all looks like. But basically it comes with 2x phone cables that are around 3' each in length, a fairly short cat5 cable, the power cable, a phone splitter, two antennas for the device, the device itself, a quick start cd, and a visual aid to walk you through the steps to setting it up. I recommend at least replacing the cat5 cable or if you're going full on wifi, ignore it completely. It is a nice build, but way too short to do anything with unless it is sitting next to your pc.As for the visual aid and the quick start disc, you only really need the disc. The visual aid is good for those who really need the help, but even with some basic computer knowledge you should be able to figure things out on your own. The disc actually opens up the router page for you (I recommend bookmarking it so you can always get to it with a click of a button.) and you're greeted with a basic UI which looks fine and is really easy to set up. What I wanted, and what it provides is the WPA2 encryption, which is fairly common and if you have Wifi, get it. WEP is utter trash (can be cracked in 5 minutes), WPA is slowly falling apart, and WPA2 is currently the best you can get without just going with Ethernet cables only. After setting things up, I have had no real issues with the device. I initially needed to restart it a few times to re-connect to my internet, but that was the fault of my ISP, not the router. We had some bad filters on the outside line which an Tech. recently fixed for us, and the problems have disappeared. The build quality of the unit is fairly nice as is the size, it is rather small and easy to make room for, so that is good. One thing that I am sure a lot of you are curious about is the range of the wifi. I have to say, the range is fairly good. I have the router/modem combo in my room which is in the back corner of the house. We're able to get a good signal anywhere inside and outside of our house. At the property line it starts to get weaker, but overall it allows us to get online anywhere we need to at home, which is what we really needed. As a first router/modem, it is a really good buy, and if you're not looking for all the extras it is worth checking out. I did check dd-wrt and it does not look like they support this unit, so if you wanted to custom flash the device, this isn't the one for you.

I was attracted to the price of this router, only $20 at Microcenter. The setup process seemed quite easy, although the instruction sheet needs a LOT of work to clean up the English (why can't they ever hire a native speaker for an editor?)When I set it up, it worked great on the cable-connected Ethernet ports. However, when I tried to update the firmware, the unit kept freezing before completion. And then during reboot, it freezes up again, too.I sent an email to their tech service, which promises to reply within 24 hours,. Three days later, no reply. And their 24/7 telephone line is always "out of service". I hate to spend more than twice as much for the same thing for a name brand router, but if I can't get any satisfaction soon, back it goes.Well, I did get satisfaction. Finally, their tech service replied by by email with the solution. It took a few iterations to find the problem, but the problem lay in the extension of their update file. It came across during downloading as an .rar file, which happens to be a proprietary compressed file - yet the update didn't say that, nor tell how to decompress it. And when trying to use it to update the firmware, it failed, as I previously described. Their technician then sent me the same file in a .bin format, which the router understood perfectly. The update process then went to conclusion without a problem.Since then, the router has worked perfectly, and has a reach across the whole house. Because of its performance and price, I can now wholeheartedly recommend it.

This is my third router over the years. It's my fifth if I count the two that I returned. The very first one is made by D-Link. It could not even download a file correctly. That was really terrible. It should have been on the market. Then I bought linksys WRT54G. It was average. Several years ago, I switched to Trendnet TEW-432BRP. I think the Trendnet router is much better. However, recently, the Ethernet link will drop during busy hours for some reason. Therefore, I decided to get a new router. First I tried another D-Link router DIR 605L. I thought D-Link has been in the business for many years. I will give them another try. Unfortunately, the quality is still not there. It can't even have a stable wireless link in the same room. Then I tried this Tenda router from a Microcenter for its low price. Surprisingly, it works just fine. Both the Ethernet and wireless link are stable. For the money, it's a winner. I did a firmware update as well. It went through smoothly.

Bought this router to clean up my desk area, worked okay. It was not as easy to set up as others I have used as the menu screens do not use what I would consider standard terminology and do not do a good job explaining the options. Downloaded the manual which was some help. It took several tries before I figured out how to get it to connect with ATT DSL. It worked fine for internet access but I was unable to use my VOIP service for some reason. Calls would be choppy. Worked with my VOIP provider to open ports, etc but no luck. Switched back to my old modem and router and the issue immediately went away so it was not a DSL or VOIP issue. Tried to contact Tenda support with no response. Ended up returning it. 5 stars to Amazon for making the return process a breeze.Would not recommend unless you need very basic internet access.

Hate to say it but this is a bit of Chinese junk, not worth the plastic and wire it is made from. I am relatively tech savvy, and have installed a variety of modem/routers in the past. Heck if I can get this to work right. I am writing now using the package, but only through a wide open network. The autoconfig of the CD never worked, the paper instructions impossible to follow. I finally was able to get to the router dashboard, and configure a completely open, password-free wifi, but living in an apartment building this is not acceptable. Now I can't get the dashboard back up, the system doesn't find the router through the direct line, and I am ready to throw this peice of garbage in the bin. Stay away.

I found the item I bought recently was old version(hardware) 3.0. from Amazon unluckily. ( Also, I found that Walmart online Store is selling new product with oldest hardware version 1.0 in US market). Now the latest version in worldwide markets is version 5.0 of V300D by the Chinese manufacture from China. Version 3.0 is compatible with up to Windows7.Configuration will not function smoothly for Windows8 with old version of W300D. You can not find the version#, and production-year of item on the label at the bottom of the unit in US markets. So I found firmware update for the unit is not easy job. I emailed tech support for helps many times. Old hardware version products,in my opinion, should not be on sale in US markets. Manufacture should recall for all old versions in US markets in 2003 because of missing its version # and production year.

Have AT&T as ISP. Had an issue getting the router config with modem. But was able to reach Tenda technical support( after a few days trying to reach someone on the phone. Prior getting TS was about to take router back to Microcenter) and was able to get the router config correctly to modem. Works just fine now! Wireless works great with ipad and laptop. So, call TS if you run into problems getting router to config with DSL/Cable modem. Might take a while to connect with TS. But once they assist you with config router it works great!

I had been using a 2wire 2071 DSL Modem linked to a Belkin N Wireless Router. The setup worked OK, but I wanted to clean up the desk. I decided to purchase the Tenda W300D. I had reciently changed from Netzero DSL (Sonic.net) to ATT. The 2wire dropped the DSL sync frequently and wouldn't re-sync for minutes to over an hour. Originally with Netzero for over 3 years, I never have this problem. I had ATT out 3 times to check the wiring and it checked out fine. Although, I was at the distance limit for DSL service. Since I placed the Tenda W300D in service, this has not been a problem. It has an on-screen interface which shows if it's connected, and the lines (DSL, ethernet) which are in service. It does seem to run a little warm, so I'll see how long it continues to work. For the price and all-in-one unit, I'm satisfied so far!
