Update #2: I’m reading reviews saying it’s quiet... download the app and max out the EQ for low, mids & highs. It doubles the sound output. It doesn’t even distort the sound. It’s loud enough for me with regular settings though.

1 month update: I’ve had time to really enjoy this speaker. I want to talk about the battery life now. I wake up every morning at 4am to get ready for work. That’s when I unplug this speaker and turn it on. I play it softly in the morning. Until 4:50 when I set off for work. When I get to work my phone instantly returns to the xb43 the second I turn the key off. That’s where it starts playing 10 hours straight. Anywhere from 60% - 90% volume. I leave work and it’s at 70% battery still. After 10 straight hours! I don’t know how long it lasts on 100% volume with the lights on. It’s too loud. Our PM’s and President probably would ban all music if we were to blast it all day long.

Now let me get back to the bass. The trick with the bass is to download the music center app and adjust the mids & highs to negative six to ten (-6 to -10) and adjust the lows to plus one or two (+1 or +2) that way the bass isn’t muddied and all you have to do is turn the speaker up louder to get massive op bass. Or put bass on 10 and the other on -10 to just slap xD

(Old review): I’m not sure where to start with this thing. First of all the sound is on point. It sounds better than my cars speakers. The highs and mids are replicated beautifully.

Now let me warn you about the bass. I don’t see anything extra about it. The bass is there. It creates the tones. It can replicate the bass from Kendrick Lamar’s “Swimming Pools.” Most portable speakers can’t even attempt to reproduce that low level of hertz bass line. It slaps but it’s a 7ish pound speaker so don’t expect to feel it in open spaces.

If you listen in a confined space like the bathroom, the bass rocks. If your listening outdoors you can hear it. People will be impressed that this level of sound is coming from this sleek flashing bar. It’s very beautiful. It’s impressive. All my coworkers put away their speakers (Bose, JBL etc...) and downloaded the fiesta app and add songs to the queue. They like the sound of my speaker better than their equivalently priced bt speakers. I’m proud of my Sony.

I'm an audiophile, a home theater guy, a high-tech aficionado and I've always been a fan of Sony products, particularly their ES high-end series. I was very eager to test that Sony Bluetooth speaker.

Short review : Sony engineers should be ashamed of themselves. This speaker performs well only at blasting high volume when you’re partying and you don't care for the quality of sound. Period.

Long review :

Pros :
- Built like a tank (beside the very fragile fabric surrounding the unit)
- Water-resistant
- Good deep and tight bass
- Blast at high volume without any distortion
- LED lighting effect is cool (but if the soundtrack is complex the LED lights up like a Christmas tree and then too much is like not enough)

Cons :
- Voices highly muffled
- Nearly no soundstage
- Overly present autotune equalizing software that keeps adjusting the sound output (extremely annoying if you like to listen to a well-balanced sound, it's driving me nuts!)
- LIVE mode totally useless (I can't even explain what it does, I thought it would open the soundstage but no, it simply worsens the sound)
- Unit is extremely unstable (it's a heavy weight but because it's shape like a football and has only two small rubber feet, the unit tips on its back by simply a push of a finger)
- The fabric surrounding the unit is super fragile. I dropped the unit on my foot and it made a tear in the fabric (and hurt my feet real bad, all because Sony didn’t though putting an handle was a good idea on such an heavy unit!?!)
- No handle for transport (unacceptable since the unit is VERY heavy)
- LED lights are a bit too much aggressive (the effect is cool, but the LED light up just too much to be enjoyable, looks more like a gimmick aimed to entertain kids)

I've listened to numerous tracks of different artists to test this unit. Only some of them actually sounded good on this unit. I've noticed two things :
1) The more natural or live the track is, the more it sounds terribly bad on this Sony speaker. While the more the track was engineered in studio the more it sounds good.
2) The more the track is complexed (read many instruments and/or voices) the more the sound is terrible.

Pitbull with Ne-Yo, Give Me Everything : Ok at high volume, good deep bass
Lil Wayne, Tha Carter III, A Mili : Ok, good deep bass
DJ Kool, Let Me Clear my throat : Bad
Kriss Kross, Jump : Bad
MC Hammer, Can't Touch This : Bad
Joe Bonnamasa, Live at the Royal Albert Hall, The Ballad of John Henry : Terribly bad
Joe Bonnamasa with Eric Clapton, Live at the Royal Albert Hall, Further Up The Road : Barely listenable
Joe Bonnamasa, Live at the Royal Albert Hall, Sloe Gin : Listenable
Diana Krall, The Look of Love : Listenable
Diana Krall, How Deep is the Ocean : Listenable
Huey Lewis & The News, Back To The Future Original Soundtrack, The Power of Love : Bad
Eagles, Hotel California, Hotel California : Listenable
Tracy Chapman, New Beginning, Give Me One Reason : Sounds surprisingly good (go figure out... the engineer who worked on the autotune software must a be Tracy Chapman fan lol)

The best sounding track on this Sony speaker? An EDM (Electronic Dance Music) version of Elvis Crespo Suavemente, a highly computer engineered studio techno track. Draw your own conclusions...

If you're looking for a speaker to place next to your pool, to be driven out loud without distortion, that can withstand watersplash from the pool, and can entertain your kids with cool LED light effects, this unit is perfect for you. And that's probably the goal that Sony was looking for when marketing this product. But if you care for a well-balanced sound, a wide soundstage, and you want to be able to recognize the voice of your favorite singers, seriously looks somewhere else.

I might sound harsh toward this product, but giving the longtime experience of Sony in the audiophile world with their highly praised ES family of products, it's only disappointing to see such a product coming from Sony.

So why giving it a 5-star rating? Because I'm guessing I'm not the target audience for this speaker. It's a speaker aimed at teenagers who wants to blast music around the pool, teenagers born with MP3 compressed music and low-resolution streamed music and who think that this is how music really sounds like. For that audience it's a 5-star product.

I absolutely love this speaker. While it may seem a little pricey at a $250 MSRP, you get a lot of speaker for your money. If you can get it at the current sale price of $180, it almost falls into the no brainer category.
I have numerous Bluetooth speakers and I will compare this one to my all time, low cost, favourite Sharkk (no longer sold) and my best sounding B&O Beoplay P2 (https://www.amazon.ca/Bang-Olufsen-Portable-Bluetooth-Microphone/dp/B06XYS74L8). I also have this Monster (https://www.amazon.ca/Monster-Performance-Portable-Resistant-Bluetooth/dp/B01BW2TM2G) which is amazing, but it is anything but portable. I will mainly focus on the Sharkk and B&O as far as sound quality, size, and battery time.

Listening material for comparison: Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Buck Cherry, Kid Rock, Hendrix, Beastie Boys, Rage Against the Machine, Cypress HIll, Simon & Garfunkel, Jack White, Greta Van Fleet, Elton John, STP, Nirvana, Willie Nelson, etc. you get the idea. A very wide range to really put the speakers through their paces. Highs-Mids-Lows. This is by no means scientific, just my opinion.

Sound (5 Stars for the Sony/B&O; 4 Stars for the Sharkk)
This speaker is nearly as loud (2/3 or 3/4) as my Monster listed above, but it has much better sound. The Highs-Mids-Lows are almost as good as the B&O out of the box. I did find it a little muddy and bass heavy compared to the B&O, but once I downloaded the app everything got better. First I changed it to live mode on the speaker itself (can also be done in the app) and then I used the 3 bar equalizer to brighten the sound. After doing this, it was pretty close to the B&O. Of course the bass was much better on the Sony, but you can’t fault the B&O, it is 1/4 of the size (see pic). Of special note: I found I could really hear the djembes/bongos on Anthem (Greta Van Fleet) which I never noticed before. I was also surprised at how much bass the opening of Sunshine Superman (Donovan) had. I must have heard this song a thousand times, but never really noticed how “bassy” it was in the beginning. This speaker really made me sit up and take notice when it came up on my playlist during testing. BTW, I use a FLAC copy of Pink Floyd “Dogs” during all my testing and the dry mouth click from Gilmour at the 6:53 mark was nice and clear.

Battery Life (5 stars for the Sony; 4 for the Sharkk; 3 for the B&O)
I have to say the battery life on this Sony blows every other speaker I own out of the water. The B&O sounds amazing, but I find I run out of juice if I am using it for an extended period. The Sharkk definitely lasts a lot longer, but nowhere near this Sony. You can definitely take it to a party and not worry about plugging in for the entire night. I used it for a pool party recently (lights on; volume level 8-10) and it was still at 50% after 6+ hours. It’s also nice that you can check the battery level in the app as well as turn on voice notifications.

Portability (4 stars for the Sony/Sharkk; B&O gets the 5)
*See pics for size reference
This speaker is really portable and so is the Sharkk, but neither come close to the compact size of the B&O. That one isn’t much bigger than my phone.

Connectivity (5 stars for all three speakers)
Like any Bluetooth device, connectivity was very easy and there were no issues.

Bells and Whistles (5 Stars for the Sony; 4 for the Sharkk: 3 for the B&O)
Wow! The Sony is ridiculous for bells and whistles. I would give it a 6 if I could. Yes it has the lights which are a nice feature, but not something that gets me to buy a speaker. The sound is the most important factor for me. Everyone that saw the speaker was impressed with the lights though. The main app also works well for tinkering with the lights and “fixing” the sound if it isn’t to your liking out of the box. I have to say, the best bell/whistle is the Fiestable app though (see pics). With that you can really have some fun with this speaker. You can do just about anything you want with the lights in this app, but the DJ/effects are the best part. You can scratch, add vocals, drums, etc. It really is a lot of fun. Usually, this stuff doesn’t mean much to me, but it was very enjoyable to play around with. The Sony also has an IP67 rating which basically means that you can drop it into water up to a meter deep for half an hour. I threw it in the pool 3 or 4 times and not only did it continue to play music, it also floated. Definitely a welcomed feature. It is nice that you can pair this with another speaker to get some separation and extra sound as well. Finally, you can use this to charge your phone if you find yourself getting low on power. They left nothing out. I decided to give the Sharkk a 4 because of how the controls on top light up depending on the light level in the room. An excellent feature when you have it by a campfire or somewhere with low light conditions. One thing the Sony doesn’t have. The B&O is just a speaker with your basic extras, so I only gave it a 3.

Overall, this is a great speaker that is now one of my favourites. It sounds great, lasts forever, has the IP67 rating, and has some really nice companion apps. If you are in the market for a Bluetooth speaker, put this on your list, especially if you can get for the sale price.

Recommended!

Good luck with your decision/purchase.

I suspect the target market for this speaker is for outdoor events, parties, gatherings etc. On its own this speaker is decent, but didn't blow my mind either. I suspect it really shines when it is paired to multiple similar speakers where a person can customize lighting and sound effects to create a full sound and visual experience. The Fiestable app, while a bit crude in design, does the job by allowing for a lot of sound and light effects to be highly customized. This was beyond my needs, so I deleted the app after trying it out. The Sony Music Centre app is more valuable for basic use of this speaker. It allows you to update the firmware, change or turn off the lighting effects and play with the bass/mid/treble levels a little bit. I think the levels do need tweaking - out of the box the sound felt a bit hollow or empty to me. And on its own the speaker loudness maxed out is fairly moderate, which I suppose is expected for the size of it. You definitely feel the bass it is putting out (which is built into the design). This thing is not a stereo system on its own, but it is a pretty decent stand in (and better when connected to other speakers in a group). Battery life is good, and you can also charge other devices off of it too, which is handy. Water resistance is good (though I wouldn't drop it in a pool or anything - a drizzle rain won't harm it). Did not get a chance to get it too dusty, however. Bluetooth connection to a phone is really simple and fast as well. No issues there for me. Overall it's a good Bluetooth speaker. It doesn't blow my mind, and it's a little pricey (to me), but it operates well, has a good battery life, and the lighting effects sync with the music in an interesting way that could really add to an outdoor event when customized and synced with multiple identical units.

I’m really happy with this speaker. It’s super easy to work and it sounds great. It’s a lot bigger than I anticipated and the craftsmanship is on point. It’s pretty versatile, it can be put on its side or stood upright. It is water resistant and easy to wipe down if it gets dirty. There are lights that flicker with the beat of the music that look pretty cool but they can also be turned off if you prefer. Battery life is really good. One of my favourite things about this speaker is the battery button at the back. When you press the button, a voice comes on telling you how much battery life is remaining. I really like that. You can pair the speaker to other speakers in the same family. The speaker charges by USB-C and it also has a USB port in the back allowing you to charge a device while using the speaker. I had no issues connecting the speaker to my devices. I just looked for it on my bluetooth list and I was instantly connected. I like the sound on this. It has really good definition between highs and lows, and the bass is pretty good without taking over the music. The music is full bodied and it sounds really nice. The live mode is cool, it really does change the music so it has more of a surround sound, I do find that I lose some of the bass I like in live mode. I cannot find one negative thing to say about the speaker. For its price-point, it has exceeded my expectations. I really like it!

Плохо

Pros:
- High quality, solid construction. Love the mix of soft touch plastics and mesh - feels premium in hand.
- Water resistant, which make this purchase for beach days
- Incredibly full sound that fills a room. Lots of volume in this, and doesn’t distort at higher volumes. Sound profile is a little bass heavy, but this is easily adjusted in the sony music app.
- Quick and easy Bluetooth pairing. Love the NFC compatibility works great with my Galaxy S9 for seamless pairing
- USB-C Charging
- Pairing with other speakers of the same middle is seamless and very cool every time you do it. Gives you the option for each speaker to act as a left or right channel, or alternatively to just have them duplicate sound. This is a pretty unique feature to the Sony line up of speakers

Cons:
- “Fiesta” lights are a bit of a gimmick, though fun and customizable within the sony app without the need for the Fiesta app if that’s your kind of thing
- Expensive considering what you get and alternative options that exist

Overall:
The SRS-XB33 is a decent upgrade from their previous mid range Bluetooth speaker. It’s a decent size without being too large. The extra size gives it a nice, full sound that easily fills a room. If you’re interested in the lights specifically, you’ll need to download the Sony app. While they mention the “fiesta” app, you don’t actually need to download this for light control. My main issue with this is the price. You’re paying a pretty significant premium compared to other Bluetooth speaker options for the Sony name. Honestly a significantly cheaper Bluetooth speaker from a different brand will likely get you 80% or even 100% of the way to this one at a fraction of the cost. That said, I recognize that for some people the extra flare and extra confidence you get in terms of warranty from a bigger company does matter, so if that’s you and you don’t mind paying the premium, this will do the trick!

For its size (Approx. 325 mm x 123 mm x 117 mm), this little speaker is heavy (over 6 lbs!), which should give you some idea about the quality and internal battery capacity (although the actual capacity of the internal battery is not listed).

The contents of the box are basic: manual, wall adapter with a USB-C (thankfully!) end, and the speaker.

The speaker looks nice and beefy and the aesthetics are quite appealing. The actual tweeters and woofers are behind a fabric-like grill, but you can see them clearly when the speaker lights are turned on - and yes, this speaker has lighting which does enhance any party or listening experience.

While I haven't listened to this in the rain, this speaker is rust, dust, and waterproof with an IP67 rating. It should be noted that it's only waterproof when the back panel is closed using the rubber seal. If you decide to use this speaker with an AUX cable (which it does support), you could expose the back to water, so be mindful.

Along with aux input, Bluetooth is going to be the main way to play audio through this speaker. Sony has done a great job by adding NFC pairing to the speaker - if your device supports NFC, then it's literally just a top on the speaker with the back of your device and it's paired. Of course, you can also pair using traditional Bluetooth pairing, which is also fast and easy to do.

While this speaker can pair with other speakers (namely the SRS-XB43, SRS-XB33 and SRS-XB23), I don't have any extra speakers to test this with, but it can help to create a more surround or multi-room listening experience.

The Sony Music Center App allows you to update the firmware on this speaker (one was waiting for me out of the box) and it gives you control over the equalizer, "DJ mode" (cool features, but seems a little impractical to use in a real situation), sound mode, standby timers, etc. You can also use it to play music and control the volume and it works with my installed Google Play Music and YouTube Music apps on Android.

I will note that these speakers include the LDAC codec, which is Sony's high-quality codec. If you have a device that supports it, and you are playing HiFi audio, you will get the best possible sound.

Speaking of sound, at mid to mid/high volume, the sound from this "small" speaker is loud and clean. Not as much bass as I was expecting, but vocals are clear and the overall tone is pleasant.

At louder volume, there is distortion, unfortunately. If you are in a larger room or a larger outdoor area, I would probably suggest pairing more than one together to adequately fill the space.

The overall quality of music listening does vary with each genre. I find that rock sounds really, really good. EDM also sounds quite good, but some songs sound messy in the mids and highs, and mostly at higher volumes.

You can also use this speaker as a TV soundbar or computer speaker if you like. Movies do sound full and overall quite good, but sometimes there is some muddiness, again at higher volumes.

The lighting options vary from static to "interactive" where they flash with the music. My favorite is "Rave", which is the default. Both the speaker lights and these light bars on each end of the speaker light up with the beat - it's pretty awesome to see and I would imagine that if you have multiple speakers pair together that you can create quite an experience.

This speaker can be used off the internal battery for up to 24hours, but that's when it's on "stamina" mode, which doesn't sound nearly as nice as the Extra Bass mode. On Extra Bass, you'll get up to 14 hours, which should be more than enough, even for an all-day party.

Overall, I'm quite happy with this speaker. Not only does it look great and sound great, but it's easy to use and the lighting effects are a bonus that I really love.

If you don't have enough RGB in your life, then this speaker has you covered. There are two LED bands on either side that wrap around the entire speaker, and there are a few lights next to the speakers as well. This light is a bit gimmicky to me, but some people love LED so it might just not be for me.

Out of the box, the audio quality of this is pretty good. For an Xtra Bass product I would say that the bass is a little amplified on this speaker, perfect for those that like music with a lot of bass. You can edit the equalizer and lighting in the Sony app to customize the speaker to your liking.

With the third generation of XB products, Sony has abandoned the Wireless Party Chain. It has replaced this with Party Connect, meaning that any Wireless Party Chain devices will not be able to connect. I am not sure why they removed this feature, it just seems like a money grab to me. This speaker also will cut the maximum volume to half when the battery level is less than 25%, making the speaker basically useless.

Portable speakers are a great way to move your music to wherever you are. I've used some small speakers powered by battery for a while, but the sound was not great. Looking for alternatives, I came across these Sony SRSXB43/B speakers. Weighing in at 1.5kg, and a fairly decent but still manageable size of 36x15x17cm, there's four drivers visible through the front punched grill, and two ends that are also ported. I can easily tuck this speaker under my arm and move it wherever I want. There's a variety of colours available, but I like the black (more traditional, I guess!). Some lights are on the speaker housing and can be controlled from the app.

One great feature: the speaker is waterproof. Of course, that doesn't mean you should use it underwater, but mild rain or splashes from a pool will not damage the speaker. The built-in lithium ion speaker is supposed to last 24 hours, but I have not tested this claim: most of the time it's plugged in, and if I move it to the edge of the pool, for example, it's only running on battery for a few hours at most. Connecting to and syncing your device is simple with the dedicated app. If you have more than one SRSXB43/B available, you can control them all from the same source if you want.

The big claim on the box is this is "Extra Bass". Obviously, that means there's artificial boost in the bass frequencies, and the amount of boost can be controlled from the app. While obviously intended for today's music, with a little bit of adjustment you can play practically all music on the speaker. However, classical and opera do not come across as well as, say, pop and rock. Since I play mostly 80s and 90s when in the pool, the amount of bass is not bothersome for that music. With my favorite music, the sound belies the sound of the speaker: you'll think there is more music than can come from this relatively small container. You can position the speaker vertically or horizontally and there are sound controls on the case.

I am surprised how much I like this SRSXB43/B. The sound is good and loud, without being tinny, distorted, or too bass punchy (unless you want it to be). A pair of these speakers are now positioned around my pool and I like listening to tunes while I am in the pool or relaxing on the patio. I'm considering buying another pair to expand the sound coverage. This is not an inexpensive speaker, but considering all the features, it's worth the money.

This is a rugged tough sleek and portable Bluetooth speaker for anyone who loves the outdoors. You never have to worry about it getting wet because it has waterproof capability – even in salt water – and it just sounds so good. The battery lasts 10-12 hours on my experience on continuous usage, but if you needed it for a weekend for a few hours each day, it’s more than sufficient. It sounds amazing – Sony does well with sound, and the speaker and bass is clear. I think this is a well worth product for anyone serious about good sounding music when they’re outdoors!

I really like this speaker. It’s bigger than I expected but the sounds and quality are also better. They weren’t kidding with they say this has extra bass boost. It sounds really good. I had a bose before which also has enhanced bass but that one the base was so strong I actually couldn’t turn up my music at all because it was just drown out by any bass.
This one sounds clean with a good amount bass. No tinniness or anything.
I got this for listening to music on my small patio but it’s powerful enough that I could use it in much larger spaces too.
I like that if I want to stick with Sony I can pair this with other Sony speakers in the line. I also really appreciate the various attachment for hanging this.

Note: it’s waterproof but only salt water resistant. It says you can use this by the sea but that doesn’t mean you should take it on the water.

My UE Wonderboom (received as a gift last year) stopped working and I jumped on the excuse to find something better (I never cared for the sound). I’ve had a Sony SRS-X5 (@SONY please bring this back!) for years and I hoped to find something with a similar sound, but with more portability.

I was a bit disappointed with the XB23 at first but, after some tinkering in Music Center and speaker placement, I fell in love with this speaker for what it is.
I get an impressively warm and rich sound out of this little guy (B+5, M-2, T=0) but only if I keep the volume between 1/3 and ½ on my phone (Galaxy S9). This will work great as a travel speaker on business trips but it’s not something I will take camping, on picnics, or even listen to around the house. I’m thinking of giving the XB33 or XB43 a try to see if they’re better (but those cheesy lights!).

At higher volumes the XB23 sounds tinny and the bas is annoyingly poppy but, and lower volumes, this little guy can produce a really enjoyable sound (the little passive radiators can only handle so much). If you’re looking for something small to keep at lower volumes (like a hotel room) this is perfect. If you’re looking for something to enjoy music outside or with friends, I’d say keep looking. – This is just my two cents and I welcome other’s input. Thanks for reading!

At first when you take it out of the box, you don’t realize how heavy and robust it is. I charged it once and until now I haven’t had to charge it again. Although, I don’t use it as often, it’s still nice that it has a charge. Now the sound? It’s epic. The bass is great, and the sound clear. I usually just listen to music on my Google Home but now that I have this, it’s so nice to listen to music. There’s also the added feature of party lights which you can turn off if you like. I definitely recommend this speaker if anyone is looking to find a reasonably priced speaker.

This speaker is bigger and much heavier than the 41, but not really a big deal. Bluetooth is amazing and easily plays music from two devices without manually switching. Live mode has improved a lot and overall you can hear the voice mjch cleaner than the 41. Charging speeds are a lot quicker, so overall very pleased with this speaker.

These wireless Bluetooth speakers are perfect for indoor and outdoor adventures and they have a fantastic deep sound that would be perfect for a pool party or perfect for just lounging in your backyard. these are great quality and they look fantastic as well they are well built and have a good weight to them so they feel like a quality product and sound like one too. I like the blue and black colors they go well together and would go well with any decor that you have in your yard or indoor.

Far superior than SRSXB22 in my opinion. You can feel the bass. You can attach this onto anything for portability.
Easy to connect to, as easy as the previous versions.
The sound quality is VERY good for a portable Bluetooth speaker. The price is a litter higher than the average Bluetooth speaker, but well worth it in the end.

The speaker is exactly what you expect, the only problem is the volume. I mean the thing is pretty huge, yet it’s not powerful at ALL. If you plan on Not taking this outside or for parties then this speakers for you. The bass would be fuzzy at certain levels too. I returned it since it was not $250 worth in my eyes. Get a jbl or bose instead, trust me.

I had a JBL flip that I had owned for about 7 years or more, but the battery life was starting to get really bad. I started looking around at speakers and since I recently bought the Sony WH-1000XM3 headphones and love them, I figured I would give a Sony bluetooth speaker a shot. We decided on the SRS-XB33.

First, this thing is big! It's probably 2-3 times larger than my flip was. It is also obviously much heavier and seems really well made. With this extra space, it was obvious that the battery and speakers are all significantly larger as well. With this came pretty amazing sound at mid levels. We spent the day outside doing yardwork and could easily hear it while still being able to have conversations.

Design - This thing is gorgeous! We purchased the Blue one which is a nice color, but the lights on it were the star of the show! We were all dazzled by it and enjoyed trying the different color options as well as the settings to strobe.

Battery life - The speaker came charged at 50%. We had it on all afternoon and early evening (probably about 5-6 hours) with the lighting on, and it was at 30% last night. The speaker is supposed to last 24 hours, so this seems in line with what we saw. If this isn't the case, I will edit this or update this review later.

Connections - The fact that it is a USB-C charger, which is where everything is going anyway is excellent! I found the bluetooth easy to connect to, I understand I can also charge my phone off of this as well. I'm excited to one day purchase another Sony speaker so I can set up the party connection.

Cons - I honestly don't have any cons as of right now outside of the delivery. I'm not sure if this is just some vendor and not Amazon, but the box wasn't factory sealed and it ended up coming via USPS which isn't the norm.

So far, I am really happy with this purchase and excited to get a ton of use out of this during the summer hanging out in the yard!

The sound quality of this speaker is good and the flashy lights are a nice touch. However it is nowhere near loud enough for my intended use. At full volume with my phone set to its max, the speaker just fills a 12x10 interior room. Since the intent is to use on a PWC where it will need to overcome engine noise, I have no confidence in it being loud enough. I suspected this would be the case when Sony refused to discuss specifications such as SPL or wattage and compare it to the competition. Sadly I waited well over a week for delivery as Amazon has had trouble getting stock of this new unit. Also, the NFC feature didn't work with my Samsung phone. Not a big deal as BT pairing is pretty easy.

Now due to Sony's over-selling the XB33's abilities, Amazon will be getting a return of a nice product and incurreng shipping both ways, but that's the beauty of Prime...

So I've been looking for my do-it-all BT speaker for a while, without spending too much, and of the ones I have owned, the Sony SRS-XB33 is the clear winner. Scroll down if you want to read the direct review of the Sony speaker.

Previously, I've owned the Oontz Angle 3 Ultra, and briefly the Tribit Maxsound Plus, and JBL Charge 4. The Oontz speakers I still own, (two in paired stero), and they are a great value for the money, especially as a pair in stereo. That would be a clear winner for me for under $100 (for both!) However, as you might imagine, the small size and overall build prevents this from really producing deep, resonating bass, and the overall sound is a little thin without a ton of range. However, for a lot of people, these would be a perfectly acceptable choice for on-the-go music.

The Tribit Maxsound was just not very good. I don't know how it seems to receive such high praise as an affordable, but great sounding speaker. It just isn't very good, very tinny, and the bass is really lacking. The Oontz speakers are a much better sound profile, and even slightly better bass. That model also cannot be paired in stereo (AFAIK). Not worth purchasing IMO.

Now, for the XB33, and how it compared to a worthy competitor, the JBL Charge 4. The two speakers are of similar size (I didn't get exact measurements, but are more or less similar), and larger than I might have though. Perhaps because I was used to much smaller, cheaper BT speakers... These are definitely not as portable, at least for things like packing in luggage. Probably fine for road trips, but I would not want to pack this in my airplane luggage. In the box comes the speaker, a charging cord and some (terrible) instructions. The instructions now look like IKEA assembly instructions, just confusing pictures. The pairing process is pretty easy.

SOUND: The sound quality of this speaker is outstanding. The overall sound profile is very rich, and it seems to carry farther than the volume would indicate. Meaning, some speakers are loud, but when you walk further away from it, the sound dissipates quickly. The Sony speaker's sound carries farther, I don't know why that is, or how that is quantified, other than when I walk away from it, the volume I hear decreases much more slowly than some other speakers I've had. Again, that's one of those possibly subjective things, but it's definitely true based on my experience. The bass is very robust and resonates well without simply thumping for the sake of being the deepest, hardest bass. The Charge 4 has deeper bass that hits harder, but this one just sounds better. It complements the mids and highs much better than the Charge 4. Speaking of which, the main issue I had with that speaker is the lack of clarity in the mid range. The profile was just too one-dimensional for me. Thumpy bass and decent highs, but there was no depth to the sound. I just could not get into the sound profile from that speaker. You'll see a common complaint about the Charge 4 is the mids, and it absolutely is true. A good speaker with very good bass, but no depth and dimension to it. Back to this speaker, the overall sound profile is the key point. The bass is very good, but the speaker isn't just a slapper. The mids and highs are all excellently rendered in a very three dimensional sound that works well together. There isn't one aspect of this speaker that is "the best", but as a total package, it's the best sound I've heard from speakers in and around this price point. Recently I purchased a second to pair in stereo, and I'm even more impressed now. One speaker by itself sounds so rich that you may not need a second, but you really can hear the difference in two of them. Hands down, this is the winner vs the Charge 4, and an excellent value in this price range. Oh, I forgot to mention the lights! They are customizeable in the app, and really add some additional flare to a great sounding speaker, for those big house parties.

A few minor complaints I have. One is the volume of this speaker is surprisingly low. I have sensitive hearing, so I generally don't need extreme volume, but I find myself usually at about 80-90% volume outside, and maybe 70% inside, and that's just to listen at a decently loud, but comfortable volume. If you turn it all the way up, it's loud, but I could easily leave it turned up all the way without feeling like my ears would start bleeding immediately. Even my small Oontz speakers can get louder. Again, as a stereo pair, the overall volume is much louder, and that might be a solution, but as a solo speaker, some people might find the volume a bit low. Also, the battery life is pretty poor. Maybe I'm not used to these larger speakers, but I find myself charging the thing every few days, using it several hours a day. It is probably within spec, but it sure does seem like these need to be charged quite often. However, apart from that, this speaker is fantastic, and highly recommended.

I've typically bought $100 or less speakers in the past, but I decided I wanted a richer sound from my portable speaker, so I splurged for the XB43. I'm glad I did because the sound quality over cheaper speakers makes it worth it.

Size-wise, the XB43 is pretty big compared to what I've owned before. It's a bit over a foot long, and is pretty heavy. I guess that's what it takes to produce good sound though.

The XB43 connects to my laptop or phone quickly upon powering on. So far I've used my speaker for over 10 hours, and the speaker says I have about 50% battery remaining. If you want to preserve the battery, you can leave it plugged into an outlet. Sound-wise, it's a massive upgrade over $100 speakers. It has solid bass (but don't expect subwoofer deepness) and it balances the highs and lows well. I've cranked it up while playing some modern pop, and there's no distortion. It can definitely get pretty loud for its size.

With the Sony SRS-XB43 I finally have the sound I have been searching for. My old $35.00 Anker bluetooth, which I loved and had for seven years, was nothing special but a great value of sound vs $ finally died after a pool accident. I tried an off brand under $100, not good enough and returned it. I have gotten kind of picky about my sound and this category of speakers has drastically improved in the last 5 years so I decided to up my $$. I'm listening way more than I used to since we are staying home more now days. I bought a Bose Portable Home Speaker for a huge price increase! It's a really nice spacial sound and interesting features but it suits better to inside use. It's splash rating is ipx4 and doesn't cut it for how it gets used so I returned that one.
Enter the Sony SRS-XB43, I read reviews all over the internet about this one and it seemed like one I'd like to try. Amazon and Sony then cut the price by $50 so I bought 2!!! They came the next day. This is no lie ....3 minutes after opening the box I was listening to music via bluetooth! While it's not as spacial as the Bose, it is more directional, more sound out the front than the back, this speaker is exactly the sound profile I like while listening. It can be a little punchy if you like and has great clarity and range of lows, mids and highs and balances those well so they don't override each other. I listen to everything blues, jazz, rock, acoustic, electronic, classical, big band, podcasts, old radio shows, ballgames..... everything and it performs near perfect for me. It's bigger than most and at 3+ pounds it feels like a ton. Carting 2 of these around will take getting used to but the sound is worth it. The lights don't interest me and they are easily turned off with the sony app.
Pros : Great well balanced sound, waterproof, ridiculously easy bluetooth pairing, holds charge well , charges via
usb- C and they seem solid, well-built and durable.
Cons: Only one is the size and weight but it shouldn't be a deal killer.
Darn near perfect

Thanks Sony and Amazon

I'm pretty picky about my Bluetooth speakers, and normally go for Anker products, but when I saw The Wirecutter rate the Sony SRS-XB33 speaker so highly I figured I'd give it a try.

Long story short, I was so impressed with the first one I bought, I purchased a second one so I could put them in "party mode" and use two at the same time. The sound is excellent: full, rich, and a decent amount of bass for something this small. The software app is pretty rough, and it has a frustrating limitation of not remembering the speaker pairing. It does allow you to control the lights on the speakers, which is a nice touch. I discovered that using the buttons on the back are a much easier way of creating the speaker pairing, so I do that each time - I wish it would just remember the setup like my older, cheaper VAVA speakers do.

My one knock against this product is the lack of an AUX input. There are situations where having an AUX input is really handy - like when I want to take the audio from my Nintendo Switch and put it out to the speakers. I got around that by using a Bluetooth audio transmitter from the Switch, but the audio levels are lower so it's not ideal. This would be a 5-star product if it has an AUX input.

Overall this is a great product, and I love that Sony offers this speaker in bold, beautiful colours - I went with the red, and it's awesome looking!

Pros
Good battery life lasts a few days for outdoor workouts and leisure listening - i just let it die and use a portable charger to fill up until i can plug it into an outlet
Sound is good maybe could have more bass (i don't use the live feature and stamina mode sucks - too quiet)
Lights are cool - at first I thought they were dorky but they're fun with the right music (not great for podcasts)
usb C charging is nice

Cons
original packaging could be better - it felt cheap just in a plastic bag in a box - no flap reveal or anything special
nfc bluetooth tap to connect doesn't work with iPhone (.....yet)
the back flap (where you charge, check battery life, etc.) is a little hard to open, i almost never get it on the first try

I just received this and charging for the first time. The first thing I noticed when I picked up the box was "this thing is substantial". You likely won't be putting it on your desk. I got it for outdoor use and I like the idea of more sound and that's it waterproof and will be able to go on my boat. Someone asked about putting this in the cupholder on a bicycle. I doubt it. My pic gives you some reference points vs a 16 oz water bottle and the bottle that came with my bike. Too early to evaluate the speaker except to say set up was really easy and the sound quality has been good at the lower volumes I've listened to so far inside my home.
