The only drawback is what is inherent to a 20mm lens - your shots will still be wide-angle even with a 1.5x crop factor. This is not ideal for portraits and there is some mild distortion. However, for traveling and use in tight indoor spaces, it has been an excellent choice.
I tend to favor prime lenses over zoom because of better apertures, size/weight, and my style of shooting. I just tend to compose better with a prime. However, if you're not used to using a prime lens or want to avoid wider angles, there are several other options available for NEX line. For those looking for a daily carry lens, this might just be the one.
But, I was surprised that the "Phase Detection AF" feature is automatically turned off (or disabled) when I put on the 20mm lens.
I put back the 16-50mm lens while keeping all the setting the same, the "Phase Detection AF" is again turned on (enabled) automatically. I even tried the 18-55mm lens and the "Phase Detection AF" is also turned on.
This led me to believe this 20mm lens doesn't support PDAF. I tried searching on Sony site to verify/confirm whether 20mm lens supports PDAF. But I have yet to find any details regarding this.
At this point, I am somewhat disappointed. Perhaps, some experts can shed some light on this and tell me if no PDAF on 20mm is a significant negative.
I like all the 4-star reviews and I am taking one extra star off for no PDAF support on such newer lens.
$350 seems a little high, but $290 or less for a used one is a steal. After all, it does provide the most pocketable nex configuration currently available. It's not going to fit into your pants pocket, but it will easily fit into a small bag/backpack or jacket pocket. Which is great for anybody trying to make better use of their camera and carry it with them more often. You know what they say, "the best camera is the one you have with you."
However, careful comparison with the Zeiss 16-70 zoom set to 20 mm shows that the image quality between the two is about the same - there is no big optical advantage for fixed focal length. So buy the 20 mm for compactness. If you are not concerned with size or cost, the Zeiss zoom is equally good optically, has image stabilization which makes it much sharper in practice, and of course more flexibility.
Picture quality has been excellent in all situations with this lens and its small size when fitted to my camera is impressive. Even when carried in my pocket its size is still perfectly manageable with the supplied lens caps and hood fitted (although I do think it should have been provided with a case of some sort). At 20mm its focal length is too small for everyday use but it can certainly justify being taken out with me on most trips with my camera.
