I really don't need the minimum 20 words to review this great product. I used my iMac's firewire connection, and was able to back up my entire hard drive in a matter of minutes. Sorry, I didn't actually time it, so I'm not able to be more precise. It is a very quite and efficient hard drive.

Tere is not much you can say about a protable hard drive that works. It works fine. Stores FCP video data files with no problem.

Seagate FreeAgent Go Dock and Case 100521233 (Silver/White)I happened to purchase this drive and dock bundled together by Seagate (along with a case too) from another vendor, but I wanted to share my experiences here with you. I have a MacBook Pro, Intel chip, purchased January 2008. It has both FireWire 400 & 800 as well as two USB 2.0 ports. I wanted to replace my older, much physically larger Seagate backup drive with a portable drive and have been looking for a FireWire one that was reasonably priced. I was able to get this bundle for $109, a super deal. These Seagate FreeAgent Go for Mac drives in Silver are a stunning accessory to your aluminum MacBooks. They are small, lightweight, and very portableOne of the great things is this drive is already set up for Macs, so there is no changing the drive format from Windows to Mac. I'd been using Time Machine (part of Mac OS X Leopard) to do backups on the old Seagate drive and wanted to move the backups from that drive to this one. There were very easy instructions to follow in the Apple Support Discussion forums on how to do this using Disk Utility. I was able to move it easily (though it did take quite a long time-just be patient). Because this drive can use FireWire 800, all future backups will be much faster than the USB connection I'd used with the old drive.A few things to note:1. this Mac formatted drive is available in several different GB sizes.2. you can connect it in several different ways, and the various cables needed are packaged with the drive. The fastest way is to use FireWire 800. The drive itself can connect to your computer with any of the following, going from fastest to slowest:A. FireWire 800B. FireWire 400C. USB 2.0If you wish to use the available dock, you must connect with FireWire 800 as the cable is hardwired to the dock, and the connector on the other end is only FireWire 800. I honestly don't know if you could use an aftermarket adapter to change the connection to FireWire 400 (if that is all you have), so check with Seagate if that is of importance to you.If you don't use the dock, you can use the supplied cables to make any of the above mentioned connections. However, while the drive is powered through the FireWire cables, to use USB requires you to have TWO available USB ports as one port is used for the data transfer and one is used for the powersupply. The proper cables are supplied, but just know this will be a much slower data transfer than if you can use FireWire.I then wanted to use my old Seagate external drive as a bootable disk, should disaster strike my Mac. It isn't a simple process to create such a thing with Mac supplied software, but there are several freeware/shareware programs that are mentioned in the Apple Support Discussion group that are easily available online and once I'd downloaded one it was a snap to create the bootable disk.I am thrilled with this purchase, and commend Seagate for making such an exceptional product. Oh, did I say it has a FIVE year warranty? Happy Backups!

I have to agree with the earlier post that this is overpriced, but I bought it anyhow, because I wanted the firewire speed, and I thought the little docking station would be handy. Well it was after I took a file to the firewire cable ends because they were so fat that they wouldn't fit in the port on my macbook pro or any other Apple I tried. After emails with photos and dial indicator measurements back and forth to Apple and Seagate, an Apple tech sent me this " I have reviewed the pictures. I have asked multiple people to verify the information. We all agree, the cable has a different bevelled edge. I would contact Seagate regarding this matter and explain our situation. I cannot understand why they would deviate from the standard firewire 800 plug." Of course Seagate as expected wont fess up. I am wondering if I am the only person with this issue???? The cable might be able to be forced in but only by applying way more pressure than I was comfortable with, and perhaps more that the receiving end was designed to withstand. After Seagate jerked me around, sent me to 3 different people each nicely explaining I should take the drive back to where I bought it, which I nicely explained was from their website, they asked me to send the dock and cables in for them to look at. I finally gave up just hoping they would have sent me new cables that fit. I took out a file, filed the width down to match the firewire cable I had and plugged it in. Works fine but come on, I paid $140 for this POC and then I had to modify it like THAT. The drive works fine, but the quality is pretty low. The idea of a plastic case that could build a static charge strikes me as pretty shortsighted....we'll see. My other drives I bought on ebay from Oyen_digital one 3 years ago and the second over a year ago. I thought I was saving a few bucks, but not with this drama.

I purchased the 500gb free agent (USB & Firewire) to use as an external hard drive for my iPhoto library and eventually my iTunes library. The problem is that I purchased a Canon XTi Rebel and now I take a ton of photographs, so my iPhoto library grew to 40gb after about 1 year. Plus the music keeps coming and at this point I have about 60gb in my iTunes library. My MacBook Pro's HD is 160GB. When my HD had less than 10% free space, there was a noticeable impact to the performance (everything seemed to slow down). So I moved my iPhoto library to this FreeAgent, and next will be my iTunes library. Note that there are very specific steps to doing this, just google it to find out. Last point is that theoretically this keeps working with Time Machine. In other words, as long as this drive is plugged in when I am using Time Machine, then it is also backing up this drive (which is really important given that all of my music and photos will be on it). Final points on this product:1 - It is very fast with FW 800. When I am scrolling through photos in iPhoto, there is zero noticeable delay even though the photos are all on the drive. That is great.2 - It runs kind of hot. I was surprised that even when I am not actively using the drive, it will heat up very quickly. I hope this won't shorten the lifespan, but Seagate knows what they are doing at this point I hope.3 - It isn't as small as my other external drive, but it is not bad at all. The shape / size of it reminds me of one of the first Palm devices. It fits easily in a bag. Also, the little leather case that comes with it is functional, as it protects the drive and has a tiny pouch on the outside to store a single cable (usb or fw).I would definitely recommend this product.

Mine is admittedly an over-reaction based on limited evidence, but if you're an iMac owner with Firewire 800, I don't see anything remotely comparable to this compact, fast, user-friendly Seagate FreeAgent Go drive. Even if you don't have Firewire 800, not to worry. The manufacturer has provided a total of 4 cables to answer all needs along with a convenient dock (this thing scarcely has a footprint!) and, for traveling, a tailor-made, wallet-sized leather case. The only thing missing is instructions, which fortunately are totally unnecessary. My experience with trying, unsuccessfully, to make an Iomega Prestige drive appear on my desktop, after using every disc repair/reconfiguration trick I could find on the internet, including Iomega's site, is enough to extract from me the pronouncement that this nifty number from Seagate is worth twice the price of the lowest-priced 500 gig drive (which it was). Regardless, don't let price be the sole determiner of your selection of a drive. Some Seagate drives have lower consumer ratings than Iomega drives, though admittedly it's not easy to find a drive with consumer approval ratings consistently above 3 1/2 stars. Time will tell, but for the present this drive is to portable external drives what the iPod was to MP3 players. Finally, as is becoming clearer with each passing year, size and weight are no indication of a drive's durability or dependability.[Later: I transferred a 50 gig iTunes folder to this Seagate drive and, for a comparison, to another popular drive but using USB. Under an hour for the Seagate FreeAgent; almost 2 hours for the USB drive.]

BEST SELLING POINT :: It comes with the dock (FW800 only!), an extra FW800 cable, FW800>FW400 cable, USB 2.0 cable, and USB power cable (for low-power USB ports). It also comes with a carrying case that says Seagate on it--again, nice touch!WORST SELLING POINT :: Cables are notoriously short, but manageable. If you need a cable that reaches beyond six inches, buy one.VALUE POINT :: It comes with *all* the cables, a dock, and a carrying case--no other 2.5 drive comes w/ all this in the box, period.COMMENTS :: I've been delighted with this little drive and it works just beautifully for what it does. Build-quality is good but not great (mine had a teeny-tiny scuff on the edge of the metal cover), and it very solid (no rattles or loose/hanging pieces. It was put together well. Plastic, blister-packs are a pain so get a good pair of scissors! ;)I picked this one up a few days ago and thus far it has been stellar as an iPhoto and iMovie base. I work between a Macbook Pro and an iMac for doing my video and photo editing, so there are times I would like to take my stuff w/ me and use it on the portable. This drive does an excellent job w/ no noticeable difference in speed; it is that fast.I was using a USB 2.0 Western Digital Passport but the speed was noticeably slower than working locally on the computer's hard drive. The Passport is a great drive but USB 2.0 is a slouch when trying to edit large HD movies in iMovie, or copy 2-3GB files. If you have a Firewire 800 port on your computer and are looking for a portable HDD to use as your base for iMovie or iPhoto projects, this drive is a good pick. The drive is absolutely silent and has a slow-glowing LED to let you know that data is passing through the drive (nice touch). I also was impressed by the fit/finish of the drive as it matches my 15" unibody Macbook Pro nicely.

When it came to external hard drives, I only bought Seagate. We have three other seagate external hard drives in our household. I upgraded to this model and in less than a year it broke. The people at Tekserve (Manhattan's independent apple store) told me that it happens to all external hard drives. But when it came time to purchase another external HD for them to transfer whatever they can salvage from the broken drive, i was told that the model they see the least of for repair was the G Drive Mini.

I've owned my Seagate FreeAgent Go 500GB FireWire 800 drive for 6 months now, and couldn't be happier. Yes, you pay quite a premium for the "Mac" version of this drive. But it's not a simple rebranding of their Windows drives (which look similar). For the extra $$ you get a FireWire 800 port which is absolutely lightning-fast. If you have a FireWire 800 port on your laptop, or desktop, the difference in price is worth every penny.Consider this - being able to copy 6GB of data in less than 2 minutes. With the USB 2.0 connection on this drive, the same process takes over 3 minutes, almost twice as long. And compared to other USB 2.0 drives I own, the Seagate FreeAgent Go for Mac is up to 4x faster. That is worth the price! And as an added bonus, with FireWire 800 you only need one cable for data and power - no extra power adapter or 2nd USB cable for power. However, with this drive's high performance you'll need a separate power cable or USB cable for power if you're using only the USB 2.0 connector. The drive is nicely packaged, including a real leather sleeve that keeps the ports exposed for easy access, and a FireWire 800 dock which I find very handy for my MacPro at home.

I'm quoting directly from this page:"What's in the Box:FreeAgent Go portable hard drive, Desktop docking station, Travel case, FireWire 800 cable, FireWire 800 to 400 cable, USB cable, and Quickstart guide."I only received the hard drive with no docking station, travel case, etc. I communicated with the third party and they said there is an error on the Amazon website but they were nice enough to give me a credit.I just wanted people to be aware that you may not be getting the whole package so clarify with third parties before you buy. That said, I didn't understand the Quickstart guide. It was basically pictures to show you how to plug it in. But being not the most computer savvy person, I needed more info on how to actual USE the thing. So I called Seagate and they were nice and patient on the phone but they will only talk to you for free up to 30 days. After that, there is a fee of US$14.99 to call them. I downloaded a program (free) from their website and after that, I found it much easier to use.So far, the drive is working well and I don't have any other complaints.

This hard drive has failed on me in 5 days of use. The Mac OS X Disk Utility recognized the failure as "Invalid Volume Header." Running the "Repair Disk" function of the Mac OS X Disk Utility resulted in reporting that the problem has been fixed but the hard drive volume was not accessible. I have installed a trial version of "Data Rescue 3" application, and it seemed to be able to read the data on the drive and be able to retrieve it. I am going to purchase a full version of "Data Rescue 3" and retrieve the data from the drive. Then I will send this drive for replacement. Actually, this is my third bad experience with Seagate HDD. The previous ones were with the 128 GB external powerless drive that was purchased back in 2006. They both failed. Seagate should be ashamed of the quality of its products.

This is a fabulous successor to a previous Seagate USB 160GB portable drive that connects with a horrible Y-cable. That drive is still going strong and has never given me any trouble, but the look of this drive and the Firewire connection were irresistible. The included dock and its built-in FW800 cable works with my Powerbook G4; the drive connects to my iMac G5 with the included FW800-to-400 cable. Still the dreaded Y-cable for USB, though. The included soft carrying case has a handy elastic on the back that can hold whatever cable(s) you need. The inside of the case is a snug fit around the drive. It has worked without a hiccup no matter which computer it's connected to, and I love the fast write speed when copying files. It's so fast that I didn't bother to partition the drive. The cables are fairly short for portability. My only gripes are that the drive's finish seems easily marred--it had some light scratches within a day of use--and that it heats up quite a bit. The dock helps keep it cooler because the drive is upright. When the drive is not in the dock I usually prop it up against something and never put papers or anything on top of it. I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could. Wish there was a choice of colors in the Go Drive for Mac as there is in the PC Go drives.
