I have the sad misfortune of owning a Compaq Presario laptop. This piece of crud has given me more than my computer share of grief. I only use it when I travel to South America, in the hopes that some desperate thief will steal it and I can collect the insurance. So far it was stolen only once and returned within a day to the airline counter, along with a nasty note, written in Spanish, saying I should be ashamed of afflicting hardworking criminals with such a poor excuse for a laptop. Thus, with this computer, I was in desperate needs to have a mini external hard drive to image my computer in anticipation of the coming crash(es). I have used the Seagate 5 GB for six months, dropped the pocket hard drive a few times, but its bright blue light faithful lights up every time. Being a Seagate I doubt if I will need the one-year warranty, but it's nice to know that it is there. Powered through a retractable USB 2.0 cable, its small, round shell is unique in shape (in comparison to the stick shape of a flash drive) and allows you to throw it in your brief case, and then find it fast.It no speed demon but it offers good throughput, and it is a mobile must-have For the money, size and reliability the Seagate 5 GB is great `bang for the buck'. It is a "no brainer" to spend the $10 to get the 5 GB and not the 2.5 GB. Highly recommended

The drive is nice and small and has been remarkably fast at transferring large amounts of data. Ive been using it in place of a flash drive since im dealing with larger amounts of files and its been great to use. I recommend it.

These people that are complaining that they can't create half a dozen partitions on this drive, find it difficult to install three different operating systems, and are boo-hooing about its speed ought to be slapped around a little bit.... THIS IS A 5 GB UTILITY DRIVE for cripes sake!! For less than a hundred bucks, what do you expect?So ignore the momo's who are giving this device one star because they've got nothing better to do than to deliberately look for flaws, and decide for yourself. I've been using my drive for several weeks now with good results. As a professional desktop/network support technician for many years, I've used my Seagate drive as a network file server for backing up customer data just to see how it would perform, and it works well, even compared to our actual servers both on- and off-site. I've got a few GBs of music stored on it, and use it weekly to backup my work PCs, too.As the owner of countless portable drives in all shapes and sizes, this is my favorite by far. Buy a can of Altoids to use as storage housing for the drive and you're set. Seagate support isn't the best-- it never has been in my opinion-- but you take your chances with that. It's a good investment for the price.

After buying a new Dell XPS system, I first intended to remove a Maxtor 200 gb drive from my old system and put it in the new computer. Uh uh... the new computer uses the serial ATA (SATA) cables and connectors whereas the old drive is standard ATA. No way Jose. So... I decided to add an external drive instead of going through the hassle of putting a SATA drive in. The Seagate 160 GB unit works perfectly. Setup is actually faster than opening the box. Plug the power connector into your surge protector, connect the USB 2.0 cable and it pops up on "My Computer" faster than you can get there. From that point, it is a simple "drag and drop" operation to backup your files. It is quiet, cool and small on my desk. Couldn't ask for much more at a little over $100 bucks.I'm not gonna give it a licking, so I hope it keeps on ticking.

I am satisfied with this Hard Drive. XP recognized it right away, and it is very quiet. Highly recommended. My only gripe, andI understand the Fat32 format is common on USB Drives, but why cannot they be formatted in NTFS? I was told by Seagate of a way to do this however, when I tried their method, a window appeared to the effect that if I continued the Drive could be become unuseable.

I thought this was the greatest portable external hard drive ever made. It worked flawlessly and reliably...until the warranty expired. In fact the hard drive expired three days after the warranty did. Nice.Seagate has a great reputation, but I also had Seagate internal drive, which broke on me in about two years. This external one only lasted one year.I'm getting Maxtors for now on. I never had problems with them.

Great gadget and, thanks to writer Stephen Paulson, it looks great in my Altoids tin (I pasted a small circle of felt in the top and bottom to stop it moving around and getting scratched.It carries its own `tool kit' installed and this makes it easy to use on another PC - the tool kit does not have to be installed to use it, but there is also a facility to partition off any portion of the drive and/or to password protect any part of the drive and you need the `tool kit' to use that facility. It comes with another very useful tool that allows you to instantly make it a bootable drive for your PC - just in case!Apart from being idea for large file storage, I have installed the web browser Mozilla, and email client, Thunderbird, on my Seagate. That way you can browse the web from any internet-connected PC and not leave any footprints behind. (Try http://johnhaller.com/ as a source for this and other USB apps.)Oh, and I have the fully-fledged office suite, Open Office (for USB) installed on it which includes all the apps you could want to run a small office.There is also a Linux virtual machine available which you can run from a USB device, making it your own, pocket PC, and this Seagate makes it simple because of its sheer size and rapid data exchange rates.Any cons? Perhaps someone could come up with a decent carrying case for it. The Altoids tin is OK, but - - - . One with a belt clip would be great.Am I pleased with my purchase? You bet!

I started out last year with my first external hardrive, a Seagate 160GB. I store a lot of music in wave format and also movies, so I needed an additional external hard drive. Simpletech was on sale and a lot cheaper at the time than Seagate...so I bought it. What a HUGE mistake. After having loaded a lot onto it, the entire hard drive fried. Plus, when it did work, it made a lot of annoying mechanical noises not present in the Seagate at all. Seagate is truly the way to go. External vents for breathing and cooling of the unit. Plus it's quiet as a mouse. I keep the seagate on all the time for the past year and a half and I've not had a single problem with it. Though you may find a good deal on a hard drive from a different company, why chance losing all of your valuable information.

It has been used to back my primary computer. Having a denial of service virus is heart sickening. I bought a second one for my secondary computer and it was good buy even though it cost one dollar more.

I bought this drive to back-up my desktop and laptop PCs. USB connection was a snap and moving files onto it didn't take too long at all. That's includes about 50GB of video media files!As for daily wear, I have no answer as it is back in its box until next month's back-up.

I was thrilled when I received this item and started using it immediately. It seems nice and reliable (I think), BUT it is so slow it's not funny. This is the first time in my life that I give a review and I am even late for work but I got to say it. This thing is just sloooow. It takes forever to transfer data. I have to transfer 8g at it will probably take 9 hours. Now I leave it overnight and hope that is finished in the morning. Maybe it is this item only. I know my PC is fine. Just be careful.

Nice,quiet and reliable drive.I don't care if it's only 2mb cache,what im looking for is long term reliability.This drive got the best reviews out of all of them out there,so i went for it and im glad i did.

The only negative thing I have to say about this little 5 gig hard drive is that it is a little slow to transfer files compared to a flash drive, but I have yet to find a flash drive that can hold 5 gigs of files. Very easy to connect to any PC I have used so far. The user manual is loaded onto the drive already in case you need it. The design is very impressive in the way the built-in USB cable rolls around and inside of the shell. When not in use it is out of the way and hidden. I am very happy with this drive.

I think this drive has the greatest capacity that u could find for a usb drive so far, but its shape could be a little bit more standard. Is not that i dont like its round shape, but probably i'm used to the old fashioned rectangular shape. Besides it would be awesome if this drive could have an mp3 player and voice recorder included, like some other 1gb drives. Anyways, it has a comfortable size, which fits perfectly into a round Altoids sours case and its capacity is more than enough for the regular needs.

I thought that 40 gb would be sufficient since I don't download huge files. But I did want to remove personal info files from my pc which is connected by a dsl line for security reasons. I found the price to be reasonable and took a chance. This drive is easy to use and I've been using it to transfer files from 2 older pcs. I haven't used other external drives but I have no complaints about its performance.

Excellent! You may find this to be bit expensive but its worth the price. Very silent operation, quick data transfer and no hassels.. just plug and play. Never had to use the power cable.. only plug in one usb port was sufficient. Rhobust design was wonderful but the size isnt as small as yo may assume from some pictures.. But overall wonderful device..

This is the first HD that I bought so I was hesitant to buy this at first. But after using it for a couple of days, I never thought that transferring files to this HD is so easy. And its claim that it performs with whisper-quiet operation is true enough. The look of this thing is also unique, compared to Seagate's other external HDs. And the price is cheaper too. Give this HD a try, you won't regret it!

Back up is drop and drag. I had mine set up and going in about two minutes using XP. Works reliably, if not exactly instantaneously. Would be nice to have an automated back up feature or software, but 160 GB worth of back up at this price would be hard to beat. Besides, your computer might already have something on it, like Nero, that would take care of this anyway. I think it's a winner for people who want the occasional, super-easy back up of files. Looks good on the desk, too. Makes large back ups affordable and therefore doable.

This product worked when I had to swap about a dozen files between my PC and Mac, but it choked when I loaded it up with about 500 MB of various formats--JPEG, TIF, Word, Excel, PDF, Quark--from my Mac and tried to open them on my PC. I rebooted my PC twice and re-attached the drive at least a half dozen times, but I could never actually view the files on the drive. Not sure if I just got a lemon or whether there's an issue going between the Mac and PC, but, to be honest, I don't really care. The product is supposed to be plug-and-play, but it's not. Guess that's what I get for believing that a component maker could make a consumer device.

I bought this as a solution for a big space on a small unit. I can't complain about it performance. I even have been watching videos from it and it shows it power. I would recommend this to anyone that wants more space on a small unit with a very low price.

The Seagate 5 GB Pocket Hard harnesses the space you need to carry all your data, music and videos. In my line of work as camera operator and video editor there are times I need to provide my customer with look at the Post Production work. With key or thumb drives space has always been limited. Not with 5Gig in my pocket! Instead of carrying 3 or 4 key drives all I use now is the Pocket Drive with everything organized and secure. I have the customer plug in and open their folder and click the clip. My associates have been impressed enough that their ordering the 2 or 3 at a time. The only down side is the Free-DOS that Seagate provides doesn't appear to work on older computer with BIOS prior to 2002.
