I purchased this Seagate hard drive and have been extremely pleased with it. It is indeed virtually silent and blazingly fast. It backed up 18 GB in 12 minutes for me. It also was recognized in about 1 second by my computer after I connected to the USB port, so there is no down time when using it.It is true that it comes with no software, which is puzzling and a little annoying. However, there is an easy resolution. Go to Seagate's web site and download their free, excellent DiscWizard software. You'll need a broadband connection to do it because the file is 100 MB, but the software is extremely easy to use and enables you to backup software more easily than drag and drop, especially if you wish to back up your whole computer. You can also use the software for other functions, like creating a second disk drive. The software was extremely easy to install and to use once downloaded, although there is one trick: the software requires at least one Seagate hard drive present on your computer before downloading or before working once downloaded. But as long as the external Seagate hard drive is hooked into the USB port you'll have no problem.I hope this helps! It's a cheap but excellent product.

It took literally about a minute to set up with XP Home.The drive comes formatted with the FAT32 file system; you'll need to format or convert it to NTFS. (You can use it with FAT32, but the filesize is limited to 4GB.)Someone posted instructions on converting to NTFS, but I got an error message when I attempted it. However, Microsoft recommends formatting a drive if the drive doesn't have data you need to preserve. Just right click on the drive icon in My Computer and click on "Format." I kept the default options, which included NTFS, and everything works fine.Now I've got my documents and email all backed up, so I know that a hard disk crash will be an inconvenience rather than a disaster. Overnight I'll do a full-system backup.I backed up 18 GB direct to the external drive in less than a half hour. After reading that someone was having issues with transfer speed, I copied a 900 MB folder to the drive; it took less than a minute.

It installed with almost no effort. It is very quiet and turns on only when being accessed. The wide base makes it stable on a table.As with most of the USB2.0 drives, it accesses data a lot slower than the bus can.

Paid $99.99 for it, and its worth every bit! At first I was skeptical about purchasing it, believing the price to be too good to be true. The Stats compelled me to buy this however.. Western Digital was selling a 120GB hard-drive with 5200rpm at $89.99, yet this product from Seagate was 320GB with 7200rpm at just $10 more. I took the plunge and bought it.. works very well with my old computer and my laptop! I was able to save all my pictures from last 6 years within minutes on this hard drive. I believe the price has already gone up to over $150, so I'm glad I bought mine on time. My brother-in-law is regretting not buying it with me at under $100. Excellent product. I'm waiting for it to go back to under $100 so I can buy my next one and hook it up with my DVR.

This device is fast, quiet, light weight, solidly built, doesn't get very hot, and comes with the special cable needed to power it from a USB port. Just be sure to reformat with NTFS or HFS before you use it, as it comes formatted with FAT32, which can cause problems with Mac OS X and WinXP.

I was really needing some kind of storage medium with at least 7GB of storage space to backup my f1 challenge 99-02 save. I decided to try to look on amazon.com to see if they had any good deals. I found a few portable hard drives that would work with my pc. Some had issues with reliabilty and others were too expensive. Then I came across this Seagate drive. I read the other reviews about it and they said it worked well. There were others out there that had more space for more money but this one worked out just fine for me. It also doubled my storage capacitiy! When my computer's hard drive started to run out of space, I simply transfered a lot of my data to the Seagate drive. Very useful! Seagate even has good customer service. I called them to see if this portable hard drive would work with my computer because my computer does not have usb 2.0 ports. I got through to someone quickly and they answered my question quickly! I've had it for only a couple of months now and it still works great! I would recommened this to anyone needing more storage capacity for their computer. I'm planning on getting Seagate drives from now on. It will probbaly be this same model too!

I had done a LOT of research on external portable hard drives, and it all came down to Seagate and Western Digital. I had heard of Seagate's very impressive reputation and had read other reviews of this product and similar Seagate products.POWER: I could not find any information about this hard drive's power source. So, for those of you who may be wondering, all you have to do is plug in the USB cable from the HD into the computer. That's it! (It does NOT come with an AC plug because you probably DON'T need one, even though there's a place to use one on it, just in case.) No switches. No buttons. No worries! The USB cable actually has two "heads." One is for power+data (the one you'll probably use most often); the other is for power only. On some older computers that can't power the HD on just the power+data "head" alone, you'll need to plug in both instead.SPEED: When I create a folder on the HD, it takes just a second or two to respond. Other than that, I am quite pleased with the data transfer speed.QUIET and COOL: It's true that this HD is quiet! In fact, it's VERY quiet! Also, during and after usage, it is COOL to the touch. Not even warm. COOL. I can pick it up and put it away, just like that.PORTABILITY: I was pleasantly suprised as to just how small this drive is. It's about the size of a grown-up's hand. I can easily put it in my backpack and/or put it on the desk without it taking up too much room.WEIGHT: It's quite light for a hard drive that can hold 40gb. It feels a little weighted, like a small desk paperweight. You probably won't notice any difference putting it away into a backpack, etc.40GB: I'm still amazed that this baby can hold 40gb, which is more than enough for my needs. I used it to back up my laptop (including all my video and music files), desktop, and my computer work I do at school.OVERALL: I am VERY happy with this HD. It is very convenient, PORTABLE, user-friendly, and there are no drivers or software to install to use it. I can plug it in to virtually any computer and use it the next instant. It's awesome for the price! If you're looking for something simple, elegant, and easy to use, I strongly suggest this HD.

Firstly, as soon as I opened the box, it struck me that the external drive received was not the same as the unit I ordered online. Further investigation suggests that the unit received is an update of the one I thought that I was purchasing online. Secondly, I purchased a new Dell laptop running Vista & wanted to be able to pefrform complete system back-ups, however, going through the Recovery Manager, when I used the full system back-up option, it gave an error message that the drive does not have a certain compatibility to support full systems back-ups. This is a major dissapointment also. I now use the file back-up option, but this is not want I had wanted to do.

I bought this and it works. While a typical USB Flash will take 30 minutes (or more) to transfer a 1 gig file, this Seagate can do it in 4 minutes or less.The only downside to the Seagate is that it hesitates and does nothing periodically. I don't know if it is waiting for the drive to spin or struggling with seeking the data but it can be frustrating.Using this with the USB drive on my Philips DVP5960 DVD player is usually convenient. However, it can take forever and a day to fast-forward. It is easier to let the video play at regular speed, set an alarm (for example, 20 minutes), walk away, and come back to watch after the alarm has beeped.The Sandisk Cruzer Micro can be had in 4 gig size and can also transfer a 1 gig file in 4 minutes or less. I have the 2 gig version and it never has the pause problem. The 4 gig Sandisk Cruzer Micro will cost you more than this Seagate but it won't hesitate and it will probably be more durable.

Up until now my way of backing up my data was to have my newest computer, the one I actually do my work with, networked to an older machine. I would backup my files across the network from the new machine to the old machine.The problem was that I ended up with a number of old machines that I want to get rid of.I discovered the world of USB plug 'n play external hard drives and finally settled on Seagate because all the computers I have ever owned had Seagate drives and they've never failed. Not even the two Seagate drives in my 1993 Dell 486 machine. They still work too.So, I plugged this thing into the wall and into my PC, and I've got 160 Gb of data storage (actually a little less but it's still a lot). I held my breath a few seconds while my PC detected it and assigned it a drive letter, and locked up for about 20 seconds. Then it was fine.I can't see any difference in speed between copying files to this drive and copying files across my network. It sure is smaller than having an entire computer just to back up files!However, it is big and heavy enough so that it won't get pulled off the desk and onto the floor just by the weight of the cables attached to it.It's so quiet I can't even tell that it's there.And, in case you're wondering, I turned the drive off while my PC was on and I got this nasty message telling me I had unplugged a USB drive unsafely, or something like that. Then the drive letter dissapeared. I turned the drive on again and clicked on "explore" for "my computer". It froze for a few seconds and then the drive letter came back and it worked fine.I don't recommend that. It's a better idea to turn off your machine and then turn off the drive. Then turn on the drive before you turn on your computer so the drive is up and running when your machine boots up.So far so good. If this thing has a problem I'll update the review.

beware of this product if you have an intel based macintosh, i have a g5 at my work and an intel core duo imac at home, the hard drive works perfectly fine with the g5 but it can't be connected to the intel one, it looses the connection a few seconds after,also performs erratically if connected to a g4. apparently only works fine with g5's

I bought this product 6 months ago and I just turned it on, and my computer wont recognize the hard drive, and the hard drive is making funny noises. Basically, my data is lost forever. I contacted seagate, and they said if I want a data recovery, it will cost $1,800. This was supposed to be a backup to my computer, but my computer has been more reliable than this junk!

What a great deal, $69.00 when I bought it.It comes set-up for FAT32. Hop on over to Seagate's Knowledge Base, Type in Format after you fill in the basic info and it sends you to an article that tells you how to set-up the drive for NTFS. A minute or so later and you are done, all without reformatting.Here is the info to save you looking. Goto RUN, type in "convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs". No quotes. All done.So this model is not the latest case design, it sits behind my laptop, so I cannot see it anyway.All my RAW files and .jpgs are moved over and I am flush with drive space.

Just to get this part out of the way, if you use the Seagate ST650211U-RK 5.0GB USB 2.0 Pocket Hard Drive within its advertised and UNadvertised limits, it works pretty well.That said, what the packaging, fact sheet, and specs do not tell you is that the drive is severely limited compared to other drives. Want to allocate three or more partitions? Sorry, all you get is two and not the usual four (three primaries and one extended). Want to use something other than FAT32 for your file system? Sorry again.I bought the drive to carry conveniently two bootable systems, the freeDos included in the Seagate package and Knoppix, a self-configuring Debian Linux distro that boots on just about anything and identifies just about all hardware and networks on its way up. I'm used to packaging that says that the supported operating systems are Windows and Mac - no Linux - but going unsupported into Linux-land is something I've just had to get used to.With the machine in Win XP Pro, I plugged in the drive and loaded the Seagate CD. The drive showed up just fine, and the CD let me check out the documentation and install the Toolkit software. I've got serious gripes about the Toolkit. First, there is no choice about where it loads its stuff (forced into C:\Program Files). Second, it puts its HTML doc there, too. Third, with no warning or any mention anywhere at all in the doc, it adds a silent startup of the toolkit to the registry at Run, and that brings up Four, there is *no* uninstall and not even an entry in Add/Remove Programs. This is an extremely arrogant installation script.As for repartitioning, I only tried the reasonable: a small FAT16 active boot partition with freeDos and grub, an ext3 Linux partition (primary), and an extended partition with one linux-swap, one ext3, and one FAT32 as logicals.The BIOS intermittantly finds the drive now. More often than not when I go to the BIOS setup to move the plugged-in Pocket Drive to the top of the priority list, it isn't even on the list. Knoppix gets a different and unknown ID from the drive (very unusual). Win XP finds the drive and allows manipulation of the contents of only one of the two partitions (logical partition is missing).To re-emphasize, for anyone operating the Seagate Pocket within its limitations, it is a good, decently-performing device. But to anyone with even a hint of geekiness, this is an unsatisfactory purchase. I'll probably be returning mine today.

Though it has been less than a month since I purchased two of the Seagate drives, I have fallen in love with them. They are very light and easy to handle. Thus, I am taking one of them with me between my external office and my home office everyday. I am using the other one for the purpose of secure backup of my data. Only the thing is that the capacity is a little bit small. I wish Seagate will produce a produce with at least a capacity of 500GB.

I have the 120Gb version of this. The drive still works great and I've been happy with it, but am on the road all the time and noticed that 3 of the 4 screws that hold the case together have fallen out. I called support for replacement screws and said that wasn't covered by the warranty and I should go find some replacements myself. They said there was no way this could happen through normal usage and I must have 'damaged' it. Ironically their own web site describes it as "Rugged and durable design." I'd like to know if others have seen this as well.

My system only included 1 USB port, and I use a USB hub to connect all of the other peripherals.This unit came with a cable with two USB heads, which I thought was suspicious. Sure enough, plugging it into the hub gave it enough power to light up the LED (it flashed to indicate something was wrong) but not enough to spin the drive.Since the unit didn't come with an auxiliary power supply, and my whole intent was to be USB-powered, I had to return it.

Ordered and received promptly from another source, where it was less expensive at the time. That was March 1, 2007, and the other source has since stopped offering it. The current Amazon price is less than I paid.The drive has performed exactly as advertised, and the back up software works well.One strange quirk is that if I touch the drive before touching the computer (ground), it shuts down. I suspect it's a computer function, not the fault of the drive. No harm done. Just unplug and restart.

I know you are looking at the current price and are thinking this is a great deal. Well you are absolutely correct. I actually have filled my entire External HD with movies and photographs and am planning to purchase a second, it runs quietly and it works efficiently without over heating, it is a simple plug and play device. Go for it! You know you want to buy it!

Very quiet and solid. I also have a western digital MY Book and its loud and gets real hot. The segate (which are the standard drives in both Mac and HP) is fast and quiet and doesn't get as hot as the my book. I'm very happy with it and 320gb for a hundred bucks you can't go wrong

Works great,I would recommend for the money. Beware the usb cable is only about 18", if you have to plug it into the back of a desktop for usb power, it can be a little short
