UPDATE: A newer generation of this drive, the 7200.12, Bulk/OEM version, has been available for a while now and has better performance in terms of speed and power consumption. So that's likely a better option.ORIGINAL REVIEW:As of now, this is the state of the art Seagate 1TB drive. It uses just three drive platters (the thing that looks like a compact disc in the photo - there's actually a stack of those inside your hard drive!). Older 1TB drives used 4 or even 5 platters.Less platters means greater data density, which means faster data transfer speeds. Less platters also means cooler operating temperatures, usually. The 7200.11 line of drives uses 333GB platters. The new 7200.12 drives with 500GB platters is starting to be released - a one platter, 500GB drive is available now. A two platter 1TB drive should be out sometime in the next month or two.By the way, a few notes about OEM / bulk drives:- OEM or bulk means it comes in plain packaging, with no software, screws or cables. If you're replacing a drive, that may not be a problem. But if it's a new installation, you'll need a SATA data cable and (often) a power adapter.- As of 1/3/2009, Seagate has reduced the warranty on their OEM hard drives from 5 years to 3 years. Not a big deal to me, as after 3 years I'm not going to pay to return the drive and put the 3+-year-old model refurbished drive I get back in my machine anyway. The real issue is, what's the reliability of the drive, so you don't need the warranty? It's very hard to get a good answer on that. Many people would say buy a Seagate, Western Digital, or Hitachi drive, and after that, it's a roll of the dice. Certainly making sure your fans are working and you clean out the dust bunnies helps!

These hard drives are absolute garbage.I had one for 1 year and 3 weeks that bricked up. 3 weeks past the warranty. I would not be as ticked off if this was not a known issue with these things. Just google "Barracuda bricked hard drive" or "Tick tick tick... significant number of Seagate hard drives failing".The company has a wonderful $300.00 program to get you your data back, great.I just went out and bought a Western Digital, which I would highly recommend over Seagate crap.

NOTE: Please research the issues about this drive before purchasing.Unfortunately, I had to return this drive. (Amazon graciously handled my return.) If you're in a Macintosh environment with no Mac Pro to put this drive into for firmware updating, Seagate has no solution. It may be the same for people with only Windows laptops. In order to update the drive's firmware (and this was one of the ones manufactured in the second half of 2008) that requires the update from SN05 to SN06, Seagate provides no solution other than putting the drive inside a machine. All of this information is accurate, as far as I know, as of this writing, February 7, 2009.In case you're wondering why I purchased this drive in the first place, it's because I have a RAID from Netgear, the ReadyNAS Pro that came with three of these drives. Two of them require the firmware update, yet Netgear has not offered any way to update the firmware in this RAID device either. They say that they can't do anything until Seagate offers them an update. It's a messy situation and I'd recommend staying away from this drive unless you can purchase one with the latest firmware - and mind that you keep your fingers crossed. As far as Netgear goes, given their lackluster approach to a resolution for this problem, I'd recommend caution before purchasing a ReadyNAS.Finally, though also importantly, I've never shut off my RAID device since I purchased it a few months ago and apparently it's on a reboot that the problems can arise. Hence, I must state that the ST3100340NS drives in it have performed as expected with no problems.

I had two hard drives installed in my desktop computer. My system disk crashed after 14 months of operation. (The data reading head broke despite the fact I have never moved my computer) yesterday after 18 months of operation my second hard drive crashed. I assume that is the same reason. Fortunatelly I have a backup, but this porudt is a waste of money.

Been using this drive for half a year now, and I must say, I'm impressed with it. It's now Spanned with a 500 GB to give a nice 1.5 TB partition, and I just can't seem to fill it up. It's fast, it's efficient, it doesn't have any errors or data loss problems. What else could you want, except maybe two?

I have used both Western Digital Green 1TB and Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB in DLINK 323 NAS device for about a month. These are my experiences... Seagate didn't need firmware update.Packaging:WD was packaged very well with cushion padding where as Seagate was packed really lousy. I had ordered 2 drives in each brand and one of the seagate boxes looked like it was opened already (may be it was human error while packaging; I didn't bother).Noise:Seagate is noisier than WD but it is much smoother than WD. Meaning, WD produced lot of hard clicking sounds that really irritated me (both drives; may be just the two I received were defective). Clicking sounds from Seagate felt normal to me (and it was muffled).Heat:Seagate got much hotter than WD. I figured WD didn't produce as much as heat because it uses "intelliseek" that runs the motor at optimal/slower speeds rather than the advertised 7200rpm.Speed:I couldn't compare speed as I was running WD in RAID1 and Seagate as Standard drives.Overall, I am very happy with Seagate mainly because of its much smoother operation and brand reputation.Hope this review helps!

There's currently a rash of Seagate HD failure affecting models Barracuda 7200.11 & Barracuda ES.2 SATA. *Please google for yourself to confirm the extent*. Geekdom's in a tizzy.Typically, after about 3 months of use some of these drives unexpectedly fail and are unrecognizable by the BIOS. My understanding is that data remains intact but is otherwise unrecoverable by the end user- Seagate offers data retrieval service. To their credit, they acknowledged the problem and offer a fix, although the first try ended up screwing some healthy drives too.Seagate released a firmware update (SN06 being latest for this model), but its long term effect remains to be determined. Until this firmware update is confirmed to be a permanent fix, buyer beware. Again, not ALL Seagate models are affected, just some batches of these models. In the meantime, if you're a novice at flashing a HD, it's best to have someone adept do it, and make sure you disconnect ALL other HDs from the system. This is a pity, and I'm sad for Seagate. Their drives are the best I have ever owned, and were generally considered to be the most reliable with an unequaled warranty. I'm not about to abandon the company yet and nor should you, but I intend to look elsewhere for at least 6 months.

The Drive has great capacity and was an easy install into my computer. I use the drive for back-up with my main disk cloned to the Seagate. I've had it for several months without any issue. If you have ever lost data before, you can appreciate the montra -- There are two types of hard drives: Those which have failed and those which have to do so. No hard drive lasts forever; the capacity and afordability of the Seagate Baracuda makes this drive a good buy.

Just got mine, and it's not on the Seagate problem list. No new firmware needed. I'm rating it 5 stars because I've had lots of luck with these drives (knock on wood) and I'm hoping this one follows suit. (For those wanting failure rates, out of 10 500mb drives, I've only had 1 fail (AS, not ES such as this drive) in less than a year, the rest are still going (ES).) Of course you never know, it's only hardware and prone to failure as often as the next, but so far so good.Update: The first one is still going strong as of the end of May. Just bought a couple more to upgrade my NAS; the model number IS still on the list of potentially affected drives, but the serial numbers are NOT, meaning that the drives that are being sold are the newer ones without the firmware problem. Will update again in another month.July 4 Update: Now running 4 of these, never a problem.

My st3500320as bricked itself today after 6 months. Seems like the firmware problem. It would be useful if seagate would proactively notify users about such danerous bugs in the firmware. Also, if the drive is an OEM drive Seagate will not repair it nondestructively, even if the problem is due to the faulty firmware. If you buy a seagate it may be prudent to wait a few months to make sure that model is stable, since so many of their newer drives seems to be having firmeware and related issues.

I expect from Amazon to offer reliable products with no bugs. Of course I expect good packing too. Amazon should be more careful with these issues.Exhanging a failed drive is not as exchanging any other product. One fills the drive with business, design or other information that at least needs to be destroyed before a (failed) drive is sent for replacement. And if the data in the drive is unique, having exchanged a $ 200 drive is nothing compared to the thousands of $$ that data recovery may cost.I hope this comment is not "censored" and it is posted.

I upgraded to this drive from a new 500MB WD model that failed after 9 months of hassles, bad sectors plus power consumption problems. This drive is faster, quieter, and so far (3+ months) extremely reliable. I use it as a primary drive in a Core2Duo PC running XP Home, no RAID. Will always buy Seagate again, I have no other affiliation to them besides being a satified customer. 32MB buffer makes a noticeable speed difference over my old 8 MB. Did not need to load any of their software, it ran perfectly out of the box.

I have been using Seagates now for awhile, and pretty much have been buying only Seagates for the couple of years.Usually they are rock solid, no failures or drops outs, and I have 2 of these. One went bad, and it was one that did not have the firmware update when I looked at the Seagate site and checked the serial numbers. The other one has been fine. It is a pain to update the firmware, but once done it works. The drives are otherwise quiet and run fairly cool. The ones that work deserve 5 stars and the firmware issue is pretty poor. (I use these to back up my computer and rotate them, so nothing lost fortunately.) The firmware should be fine on the newer ones, but keep it in mind.

I use this in an external hard drive case and have owned it for over a year. It worked fine for me. I partitioned this without any issues. It has not given me any issues till date. I have it hooked to my WDTV and it works flawlessly. The speed on this is blocked to 1.5Gbps by a jumper. Remove the jumper to bring out it's full potential of 3.0Gbps.Would definitely recommend it.

When you get this drive just go to seagate.com and pop in the serial number and it will tell you if your drive needs the firmware update or not. I received mine and was told by the seagate site I did not need it. So I installed, loaded OS, powered down a couple of times to test and everything works fine. Pretty fast write speeds as well. Btw I have purchased personally and for work Seagate, Maxtor, Western Digital and Hitachi/IBM drives and all have at one point or another have failed. Yes the seagate issue is a special case just like the IBM "Deathstars" years ago. But to say one company makes drives that fail more than others is just bullcaca.

I really read about this model, about its good performance and capacity, but also read about lots of DOAs, or deaths of drives in 1 or 2 monhts. I gave it a try and bought 2 of these for making a 1TB RAID0 array. But it wasn't the best bet, the array failed in 2 weeks, but because I used linux, even that the array was failed I could still read it (using sata_sil driver suse11). I hurried to buy a WD drive, and backed up all my data to this hard drive. The array failed because the drive started to present errors (SMART), so I don't trust this drives anymore, now I have them in a RAID1 array just to be sure. This was a big dissapointment, these days Seagate has bad quality SATA drives. Think before you buy them. low reliability.

I had bought 2 of these for my home server and one of the 2 failed. AMAZON was awesome and 'overnighted' me a replacement drive. I sent Amazon the request to replace the drive around 4:00 p.m. one day and the new one was in my hands around 10:00 a.m. the next morning. If that's not great service, I dpn't know what is. + after getting the replacement drive the remaining 2 drives work fantastic. Thanks, Amazon!

Despite reading the many negative reviews, decided to take a chance with having to return this drive. Installed/initialized/formatted/partitioned it without any problems. Created an clone of my existing dual boot OSes onto it. Then ran GRC's (Gibson Research Corp) Spinrite over four days, a few of them running for more than 20 hours at a time. No problems were found. So far, no problems encountered during actual use...
