Not happy with the current state of Seagate's quality (or lack thereof). Have been having Seagate drives fail one after the other in our NAS devices. Currently replacing them with Western Digital Caviar Black units and no more trouble thus far. Sorry Seagate, but you need to address your reliability issues.

I've been through two of these hard drives already, and I won't make the mistake of installing another. The good news is that Seagate will keep sending you new drives, when (not if) your drive fails. However, who wants to deal with that? I plan to sell the replacement they send me this time on eBay. So if you really want one of these, you can buy it cheap through my auction :)

Model ST3750330AS, Product Number: PBX156-568, Firware: SD81, Date Code: 08387. Worked great for about 13 months and then with no warning (grinding noises, etc.) of imminent failure, I turned my computer off on a Thursday night and Friday morning the bios would not recognize my HDD. I just got the "No boot device available, Press ENTER key to retry". I then purchased a copy of "SpinRite 6.0" hoping to just recover my data. "SpinRite" only recognized the "A" drive that the floppy was in. I even tried an external HDD enclosure with another computer, but that didn't work either.Three weeks earlier, I had sold (after cleaning and formating) a Seagate FreeAgent Pro 500 GB External Hard Drive" because my Son had given me a new "WD, My Passport Essential SE" external hard drive. As I am typing this review, I am looking at that "factory sealed" package and just shaking my head.I wish that I had know of the firmware update fromm 7200.11 to 7200.12. That may have helped.Seagate is replacing my HDD under warranty, but years of information, pictures (less what has been saved to DVD's) and records are lost. That is my fault for not backing up on a regular basis and I can live with that, but if there was a known problem with these drives, then I feel that Seagate should have let all registerd users know of the firmware update, hence my one star rating. There must be a reason that they have cut short their warranty period from five years to three...

This is a solid drive for enterprise level usage (probably not worth the cost for most personal users). The TV station I work for uses these on all our NAS servers, and we have a failure rate of about 1 a year out of the entire lot (about 40 HDs), which is impressive considering how many we use at once. Amazon reshipped the order and the same 1.5TB drive came back, so I decided to give it a try and it appears to work. I think that there is a stocking number mismatch somewhere in the Amazon system. Overall the service for returning the product was prompt and easy to follow. Who knows, maybe the 1.5TB drive will work out better in the long run.

I'd completely skip the Seagate lineup. Run. Seriously.I had three Seagate drives fail (the next replaced it's predecessor) in about a year's time. If you're wondering, I work at a university and we're encouraged to buy through purchase orders locally. And that meant Seagate. So three drives failed. Yes, that counts as a statistical anomaly. It deserves a fine googling. Some people tried to tell me my computer case didn't have the proper air flow or that my external casing's power supply hurt the drive. (NUH UH on each account).Other people pointed me out to a firmware problem with a large group of Seagate drives. The drives can enter a limbo BSY state that bricks the drive even though physically there is nothing wrong with it. It can be cured with a very technical low-level serial com with the controller board. (Which I actually did for kicks. It's kind of cool.)Seagate acknowledges the problem. They have a serial number search. Armchair quarterbacks estimate the failure is on 25% of their lineup. Not sure. Wouldn't take the chance. They won't fix OEM drives. They will do the low level repair thing for retail drives if your serial number comes up in their search page. This kind of mass failure of hard disks happened once before oddly enough. It was with Hitachi/IBM's DeskStar lineup, properly monikered "DeathStar." Google it if you'd like. But anyway, for the time being, Run Away! Run Away!

I'm in the IT industry and have had installed, swaped, formated hundreds of hard drives in my life. Hard drive failure is normal, and it's expected. What I've found out is that MTBF that manufacturers publish has very little correlation with reality, since reality is affected by factors such as temperature, handling, etc. What they publish is in a perfect laboratory environment-- not what people normally have at home. In my past, I have used Seagate, Maxtor, Western Digital, and Hitachi. Seagate has alway been high on my list because of their reliability and their 5 year warranty.Personally, reliability is a huge concern for me because I take tons of precious pictures of my family & baby and I cannot afford to lose them. That's why I always build RAID systems with different drives from different manufacturers, and in certain cases same manufacturer but with very different batches. After only 3 weeks, this drive failed. Since it was on a raid system, no big deal. I swapped in another drive, and it to Amazon. My other 750G failed after a year's use. That's 2 Seagate failures within 30 days of timespan-- not a good impression so far.Let's compare the latest Seagate with the latest Western Digital technologies. My Green 1T WD drives have been running for a few months without any problems so far. It's by far the quietest drives I've ever gotten, certainly much quieter than any of the Seagate Barracuda drives. It's also the most vibration free drives (Seagate is a bit noisier) and cool running-- heat shortens the lifespan of everything. The return policy for WD is much more hastle free-- you put in your credit card number and they'll hold the fees, and mail you a new drive immediately until you return the defective one, upon which they'll refund the credit card fees. Compare that to Seagate's return policy where they want to CHARGE you a set amount of cost if you want them to send you a replacement while you still have the defective drive.Seagate used to be well known for its quality in the early 90s. I used to trust them exclusively, but throughout the years their quality has decreased tremendously, and I no longer recommend using them. It happened to Maxtor in the early days when megabytes were a lot (Maxtor drives were notoriously bad in the 80s). I guess every good successful company, in their quest to drive up more and more profits, take shortcuts to make more money and eventually shoot them in the foot.Guess what, SlashDot has a headline "Seagate Hard Drive Fiasco Grows." Ha! I am not surprised. Sorry, but Seagate is just not living up to its reputations anymore. Your 5 year warranty is useless when you can't recover precious data such as pictures of your family/baby. Regardless of how good a manufacturer is, I cannot emphasize how important it is to building RAID-1, or at MINIMUM do thorough backups every once in a while. You'll be protecting hundreds of man-hours for your corporation (if this is for corporate use), and hundreds of tears for your family (for family use).

Ran the Seagate diagostic software and the drive did not pass. Currently am waiting for a replacement drive from Seagate. Luckily still had the original 80GB drive that I had cloned from and was able to reinstall it. It is a shame that a brand new drive would not last more than a week. An internet search shows that there has been a high failure rate for this model of HD.

Looks like I got longer service than most other reviewers. I bought a 500 GB ST3500320AS as an identical second drive in a RAID (this one to match the stock drive that the RAID came with). It worked fine for two years of light duty (it was constantly powered on, but not a lot of read/write activity) and then it went toes up in the middle of a file transfer. SMART Status = PASS but running a SMART Test produced failure to read test element. Fortunately the RAID worked as advertised and I didn't lose any data. The identical stock drive that came with the NAS is still ticking but I think it's only a matter of time. Drives fail--it's not a question of "if" it's a question of "when". However, I expect to get more than 2 years out of them (and from reading all the reviews, 2 years seems to be on the long end). I won't be buying any Seagate drives until they can demonstrate a much higher MTBF. This one will be replaced with a WD although it is more expensive.

stay away look for updates in other reviews for failures.Pros: Works fine until it dies!Cons: I have had 3 failures of this model disk in the last 45 days in 2 different systems. These were not gamer systems and are well cooled in large Antec boxes. Clearly Seagate has a problem and expect additional failures - next time I will put the service / shipping charges towards Western Digital units rather than replacing junk with junk.Cons: ... died without any warning after two months. The return policy is horrible - you are literally not allowed to use packing peanuts, bubble wrap, or newspaper to package a dead drive when you return it for warranty replacement. It has to be 2 inches of foam rubber in a corugated box or your warranty is void. Also, you are sent a REFURBISHED drive as a replacement. You are also required to pay for shipping the drive back, and can wait as long as 30 days from the day they receive it to get your new one. This last point isn't too bad in itself, but when mixed with everything else, it's stupid.Oh, and the RMA form on the website was down for two or three days before I could actually get it sent in. Customer service couldn't even fill out an RMA request for me - the entire system was down for "maintenance".They also make sure to withhold the detail about packing until you already submitted the form... and possibly gave them $20 to avoid waiting a month for your replacemeOther Thoughts: What happened, Seagate? I have two more of the older 7200.10 drives in here and they've run absolutely beautifully for the year I've had them - as a matter of fact, they're the only thing holding my degraded RAID5 up right now. I still have the old 160GB drive that came with my Dell five years back, and it still works like a charm. I order a couple 7200.11 drives, one arrives DOA and the other dies within two months without any warning.Cons: Had a SD15 failure. Drive was making a high-pitched noise just before it failed on machine reboot. Was able (with effort) to get SD1A flashed onto drive. But then drive became very noisy -- every few seconds, it would sound like the head was tracking accross the drive (a 'farting' noise, as some have said). Performance would also drop to near zero at these times.Got a warranty replacement from Seagate (which cost me $20) -- another drive with SD15! Sure enough, one week after install this one just started to make the high-pitched noise, so I'm typing this before I'm computerless once again.Other Thoughts: I will never, EVER buy Seagate again. I will do everything I can to make sure no one I know buys their products, either. Shame, shame, shame on you, Seagate.

I have been running these Seagate drives in my ReadyNAS NV+ for about 2 years, replacing the original 500MB drives that were shipped with the NAS. I have gradually expanded my NAS from 2 drives to 4 drives and have not had a single error reported during the entire time that I have had them installed. I regularly stream music and video from my NAS, so these drives do get accessed frequently. I cannot say whether or not these server-grade drives warrant the additional cost over standard drives, but my experience with these drives has been great.

I purchased a computer in December 2008 that contained a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 HD. The HD worked terrifically and I had no complaints about it for the first 9 months that I owned it (much longer than most people have owned one before leaving a 4 or 5 star review!!!) but the HD just now failed (August 2009). The disk does not spin and the computer does not recognize that a hard drive even exists, not even attempting to access it. The data is not recoverable by the usual data recovery processes, meaning recovery must be done in a lint-free environment at a cost of $2,500 or more. Based on the research I have done since the hard drive failed, it is apparent that the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 HDs are failing at an alarming rate (reportedly estimated upwards of around 30-40% by some data recovery experts.) While Seagate denies that the 7200.11 HDs are defective, those issuing RMAs are apparently being instructed to have the failed 7200.11 HDs sent to Seagate for replacement with the 7200.12 HDs, rather than having the 7200.11 HDs repaired. This appears to me, and many others with failed 7200.11 HDs, a silent acknowledgement by Seagate that the 7200.11 drives are defective and non-repairable. Do not believe that this issue is resolved, or can be resolved, as Seagate doesn't even appear to believe that. If you are considering buying a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 HD, don't. If you already have one, back up all of your files immediately and replace your hard drive with something else! I wouldn't have even given 1 star if that were possible.

Since Best Buy told me I must contact Seagate and I didn't feel like going through all their support process I just bought a new Seagate 1TBHD (not a smart move of course#. This HD started giving me the clicking sound after 1 month. Additionally it started not being accessible once in a while meaning this baby was about to die on me.This time I contacted Seagate support. We went together through running their diagnostic SW and the decision of the support person was to RMA the product. After going through the RMA process on Seagate site I printed the shipping address they provided and shipped the product right away. Guess what. Address they gave me was wrong. After the box returned with a note that this address is not valid I logged into the Seagate site, put in my RMA number. Guess what. They now say this RMA number doesn't exist #and I have this number printed and in an e-mail from Seagate).Finding this experience unbelievable I can only recommend to stay away from this company. I purchased three 500GB versions of these back at the beginning of 2009 for a system build where I used two in a RAID configuration and the third drive as a back up. Just 8 months later all three drives are failing: each has a SMART problem (detected by Windows and by Seagate SeaTools) and two of the three also fail SeaTools short drive tests. I use these drives in an extremely well ventilated Antec P182 case that has a separate hard drive bay that keeps them isolated from the heat produced by the motherboard and graphics card, so heat is NOT the reason these drives are failing. I believe the real issue is with poor quality components. I use a fair number of other Seagate drives and have had no problems with them. I bought literally about a dozen 2.5" 7200rpm drives for upgrading various notebooks (Mac and PC) without any issues--for a while I was replacing all my friend's drives after I sped my macbook 13 drive up from 4200RPM to 7200RPM and was showing everyone the performance improvements... In any case the problems I've had with these drives seem to be an issue limited to this particular version. The only positive thing I can say is that at least I learned these drives were going bad before they completely died. I was able to back up all my data to my NES array. I've filled out RMAs through the Seagate webpage and will hopefully get replacement drives soon, but I don't know that I'll actually trust them considering my 100% fail rate with the three I already own. I may decide to replace them with WD drives instead.

Can't read disk in another machine using Linux either.Ten years of family photos and my projects are up in smoke.I have a (heavily advertised) on-line back-up service currently restoring my files to a brand new drive. I have to admit when I first bought my Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3500320AS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - OEM Item #: N82E16822148288 (From Newegg not Amazon. However I do buy alot from Amazon as well)<<-- Item now deactivated at NewEgg.I came very close to sending it back because I heard a noise at first and was very concerned. Out of panic I called Newegg but didn't really want to send it back but I knew that Seagate had one of the best return policies and a long one at that so I decided to keep it and see what happened. Glad I did I bought mine on 7/16/2008. There were instruction on the newegg site that said to move a clip or something on the harddrive and I did this. Anyways the noise has gone away along time ago. I was told to leave the computer on for long periods of time which I did. I only recently started turning my computer off at night. I wouldn't trade it for anything. I am so so glad I stuck with Seagate. And to think I almost panicked and send my seatgate back. I bought a Eathwatts power supply also and let me tell you my electric bill is so low that I'm amazed and this was running my computer 24 hours aday.(( just wanted to add that it is possible that the white platic thing was in the wrong place on the one I bought because mine was alot cheaper and that might have been why I had to move it unsure)) Anyways I bought another one today .

I have bought one of these and from all the reading of the reviews from many sites I am very skeptical, but have been a Seagate fan from the very start. I talked to Seagate customer support about the issue before I even used the drive to see what they had to say about it. They did tell me one thing that nobody had reported as an important step in the firmware update process. (I don't even think it was on Seagate's website instructions). The site does say you have to do a full shutdown of the computer, not a soft restart but a full OFF. But the tech told me the drives fully take in and close the firmware update when the drive losses all power. That means you either need to pull the power off the drive or unplug your computer and then press your case power button to get rid off all of the system power. I am sure many people didn't make sure this crucial step in no power to the drive after firmware update was taken correctly. My computer takes 20 seconds to loose all power even when I unplug it. The drives will say the firmware was installed but may not have been correctly taken in by the board if all was not totally cut off from the drives. I hope mine is not one to suffer the fate of others and I hope this helps others in realizing you need to follow the procedure to the T. Unfortunately even a users system can prevent them from doing this update correctly unknowingly.Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500 GB SATA 32 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Hard Drive ST3500320AS

Seagate is knowingly selling a faulty hard drive that just up and decides to not be seen by the computer one day. You will lose everything on it. No it does not stop working, you can hear it spinning and there is no warning to this happening. When you contact them they try to charge you $400 or more to retrieve your data for you.

I dunno what the negative reviews are for... small print indicates they are NOT about the ST31000333AS, but another drive. I bought my ST31000333AS over a year ago, use it in an external Vantec case with firewire connection. Blazing speed, never a problem. Note that if you buy the drive alone you don't get rails, disc, anything but the drive itself. If you want a kit with all the cables, etc, then go for that and pay more. I was using Western Digital HD's for years, finally gave up after the n-th one died. Been using the Seagate Barracuda line exclusively for several years now, 300GB, 400GB, 1TB. No complaints. They run so quiet you don't know they're there. Highly recommended.

This drive failed after 5 months use. I'm RMA'ing it now as it's under warranty but just lost a ton of data. Apparently this model has MANY issues that cause it to fail BOTH hardware design and firmware. Definitely not a good combination! Thanks a lot Seagate, you just lost all my future business.

UPDATE: A newer generation of this drive, the 7200.12, Bulk/OEM version, has been available for a while now and has better performance in terms of speed and power consumption. So that's likely a better option.ORIGINAL REVIEW:As of now, this is the state of the art Seagate 1TB drive. It uses just three drive platters (the thing that looks like a compact disc in the photo - there's actually a stack of those inside your hard drive!). Older 1TB drives used 4 or even 5 platters.Less platters means greater data density, which means faster data transfer speeds. Less platters also means cooler operating temperatures, usually. The 7200.11 line of drives uses 333GB platters. The new 7200.12 drives with 500GB platters is starting to be released - a one platter, 500GB drive is available now. A two platter 1TB drive should be out sometime in the next month or two.By the way, a few notes about OEM / bulk drives:- OEM or bulk means it comes in plain packaging, with no software, screws or cables. If you're replacing a drive, that may not be a problem. But if it's a new installation, you'll need a SATA data cable and (often) a power adapter.- As of 1/3/2009, Seagate has reduced the warranty on their OEM hard drives from 5 years to 3 years. Not a big deal to me, as after 3 years I'm not going to pay to return the drive and put the 3+-year-old model refurbished drive I get back in my machine anyway. The real issue is, what's the reliability of the drive, so you don't need the warranty? It's very hard to get a good answer on that. Many people would say buy a Seagate, Western Digital, or Hitachi drive, and after that, it's a roll of the dice. Certainly making sure your fans are working and you clean out the dust bunnies helps!

These hard drives are absolute garbage.I had one for 1 year and 3 weeks that bricked up. 3 weeks past the warranty. I would not be as ticked off if this was not a known issue with these things. Just google "Barracuda bricked hard drive" or "Tick tick tick... significant number of Seagate hard drives failing".The company has a wonderful $300.00 program to get you your data back, great.I just went out and bought a Western Digital, which I would highly recommend over Seagate crap.

NOTE: Please research the issues about this drive before purchasing.Unfortunately, I had to return this drive. (Amazon graciously handled my return.) If you're in a Macintosh environment with no Mac Pro to put this drive into for firmware updating, Seagate has no solution. It may be the same for people with only Windows laptops. In order to update the drive's firmware (and this was one of the ones manufactured in the second half of 2008) that requires the update from SN05 to SN06, Seagate provides no solution other than putting the drive inside a machine. All of this information is accurate, as far as I know, as of this writing, February 7, 2009.In case you're wondering why I purchased this drive in the first place, it's because I have a RAID from Netgear, the ReadyNAS Pro that came with three of these drives. Two of them require the firmware update, yet Netgear has not offered any way to update the firmware in this RAID device either. They say that they can't do anything until Seagate offers them an update. It's a messy situation and I'd recommend staying away from this drive unless you can purchase one with the latest firmware - and mind that you keep your fingers crossed. As far as Netgear goes, given their lackluster approach to a resolution for this problem, I'd recommend caution before purchasing a ReadyNAS.Finally, though also importantly, I've never shut off my RAID device since I purchased it a few months ago and apparently it's on a reboot that the problems can arise. Hence, I must state that the ST3100340NS drives in it have performed as expected with no problems.

I had two hard drives installed in my desktop computer. My system disk crashed after 14 months of operation. (The data reading head broke despite the fact I have never moved my computer) yesterday after 18 months of operation my second hard drive crashed. I assume that is the same reason. Fortunatelly I have a backup, but this porudt is a waste of money.

Been using this drive for half a year now, and I must say, I'm impressed with it. It's now Spanned with a 500 GB to give a nice 1.5 TB partition, and I just can't seem to fill it up. It's fast, it's efficient, it doesn't have any errors or data loss problems. What else could you want, except maybe two?

I have used both Western Digital Green 1TB and Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB in DLINK 323 NAS device for about a month. These are my experiences... Seagate didn't need firmware update.Packaging:WD was packaged very well with cushion padding where as Seagate was packed really lousy. I had ordered 2 drives in each brand and one of the seagate boxes looked like it was opened already (may be it was human error while packaging; I didn't bother).Noise:Seagate is noisier than WD but it is much smoother than WD. Meaning, WD produced lot of hard clicking sounds that really irritated me (both drives; may be just the two I received were defective). Clicking sounds from Seagate felt normal to me (and it was muffled).Heat:Seagate got much hotter than WD. I figured WD didn't produce as much as heat because it uses "intelliseek" that runs the motor at optimal/slower speeds rather than the advertised 7200rpm.Speed:I couldn't compare speed as I was running WD in RAID1 and Seagate as Standard drives.Overall, I am very happy with Seagate mainly because of its much smoother operation and brand reputation.Hope this review helps!
