I carefully took it out of the box carefully made sure of no static build up carefully laid it next to my computer while taking out the old drive. Then I bumped it and knocked it off onto the hard tile floor. It bounced and cracked the corner of the hard drive and I felt sick, knowing that I had destroyed it. I had to plug it in any way just to see what would happen and you know that thing works great! I can not believe it.

I had to run all over town to find a tenth of a cent jumper that should have been packed with the drive. The jumper was needed to change the transmission rate so that the drive could be compatible with my older motherboard.

If you're worried about how they will handle your hard drive, this is the solution for you, it's the same price as the OEM but you are 100% sure your hard drive wont come with any problem, so if your major problem is this one... don't wait and BUY IT!!!So far the hard drive is fast and reliable, just the thing I was looking for

This Seagate ST3500641AS-RK Barracuda 7200.9 500GB SATA was a complete surprise to me. As expected and is the case with most WD and Seagate internal HDD's, installation was exceptionally easy. The real surprise was the included software. In my case, I had an old and small HDD that was beginning to make noise. Rather than wait until it crashed, I decided to upgrade the size and speed of this boot disk drive. I thought I was going to have to either A) re-install Window and installed software and drivers and copy the files from my old drive (a major headache) or B) use cloning software (I purchased one for this purpose). However, upon installing the Seagate HDD as my second drive, the included software AUTOMATICALLY prompted me to specify if this was to be A) a new boot drive, B) a mirror of the existing drive or C) simply a second HDD for additional storage. I selected the mirror. In no time, the system was copied and operational. THANK YOU SEAGATEI have only had the device for a few weeks, so I cannot comment on its reliability as this time.

I bought one from Frys in Feb 2009 and thought it was such a good deal that I went back the next day and bought another. The first drive started acting up after a couple months use and then died shortly thereafter. So I installed the second drive (about a year ago). Recently it started crashing and finally died. I will probably send them in on warranty, but I'm kind of wondering if it's worth the trouble.

Very simple to install especially if it's used as a secondary drive. The retail box includes the SATA cable and power cord connector cable and Cloning CD.If used as primary drive, then the Cloning software isn't that good.Sure, it cloned the original hdd but it kept the partition! NOT good when you upgraded from 250GB to 1T since the Cloned drive is recognized as a 250GB drive NOT a 1T drive!!2 Solutions:1. Buy a partitioning software to remove partition and resize the hard drive so it'll be recognized properly as a 1Tb driveOR....2. Do what many PC users do annually - RESTORE THE ENTIRE PRIMARY DRIVE with a Fresh installation of Windows! Sure, it'll LITERALLY take HOURS for a Fresh install (including other software not just Windows) but you'll have a Clean PC that runs faster and smoother since it's not loaded with software garbage that accumulated over time!I chose Option 2 which took literally 1 entire day but, in the end, it was worth it! My 3 year old computer now runs smoother, faster and has lots of room on the primary drive. I now have a computer with 2 1Tb hard drives but I still perform backups to external drives.BTW... my external harddrives are now becoming 1Tb hard drives since I build them myself with 1Tb internal drives and external Hdd enclosures. It's very simple to assemble then plug and play for additional (MASSIVE) storage! It's better to build your own External hard drives than buy one of those pre-bulit ones that don't even include an on/off switch!!Price is pretty good now ~$117 sale price (at B*****y).Better than the $125-130 sale price about 1 month ago so it's SLOWLY dropping in price! One caution:Not sure about the reliability so keep your receipts and register the product!Seagate used to be TERRIBLE years ago but when it bought Maxtor, then their HDD quality actually improved since the company must have obviously incorporated Maxtor's engineering designs into their own designs!

Purchased this drive back in Feb. 2009, daily use, died Jan. 2010. Everything worked great and then xx. No sign of a problem, not a slow death, just turned on the PC (Dell XPS 410) and got the click-of-death. Like some others with one of these failed drives the computer wouldn't boot and couldn't find the drive (not present). A real POS. The really frustrating part is this drive replaced an 18 mo. old OEM 320GB Samsung that died. My old, heavily used, 1997 Dimension XPS with its massive ;) 13GB Toshiba drive is still working fine, go figure. I guess it all boils down to hit or miss if you get a good or not.At least it's still under warranty.

I liked and bought many seagate hard disks. generally, they are reliable and fast. However, this HD is a very weird one! The BIOS would stuck at the booting, because it was fighting to recognize the HD. this is the second HD in my PC. so, I install it as an external HD, turn it off to boot my system. After booting, I turn it back on, the HD shows up in winXP. BTW, my motherboard is ASUS P5LD2-VM. I bought this HD at local BestBuy for $79.90, which sounded like a good deal!

I have windows Vista and when I attempted to install as a backup hard drive it wanted to make it a mirror image drive. Then I got a message that the drive was DEGRADED and have to take my computer to an expert to have it installed right. Plan on doing that next week and hope everything works as I want it. I will update my review when I get it fixed.

Generally I am very happy with the drive, so much so that this is the second one that I have purchased. I do have a gripe, and it is a serious one. It doesn't concern the drive but rather the Acronis/Seagate DiscWizard software that comes bundled with the drive. One of the functions of this application is to create an image backup of the drive in the event your data becomes corrupted. The application can the recall the backup image of your drive and you are as good as new. If you have used Norton Ghost, the function is identical. Using this application I made a backup of my OS. I have only one hard drive in this computer, and its the Seagate. After making the image I cross-checked its integrity with the application, so everything was fine. However, when I had to use the backup image, the Acronis application did not recognize the Seagate drive and thus would not allow me to restore my backup. The only way I could use my backup was to buy the full Acronis version, which is not restricted to Seagate drives. Maybe this is just a foul up, but it sure smells like a BAIT AND SWITCH. It is particularly annoying because depending on the importance of your backup, you may have no choice but to buy Acronis application.

The first thing to be mentioned, is that no one can rightfully complain about not having 1TB of storage, every drive, for the longest time is rated raw. When I formatted mine to NTFS it was 931.5GB, about 20GB more than I even expected. The second thing to understand, is every drive model, from every manufacturer, has a pretty standard, and somewhat high, DOA (here I am considering DOA as literally dead on arrival, and 1 week and under) rate. If you receive a DOA, rate the replacement, or the service you received. If you get two DOA's, or get a replacement that is DOA; complain freely.I have my drive (I have the exact drive, except I purchased it OEM) inside a Nexstar 3 enclosure (capable of recognizing all 1TB) via esata (you can use USB 2.0 with this enclosure as well). The esata run into my Asus G2S-B2 via a Rosewill Expresscard32 2-port esata expansion. In short, the performance I received, will reflect SATAII internal performance Identically. The first thing to do, if your sata controller can handle auto-negotiation, is to remove the tiny gray jumper entirely, this will increase your burst performance.Seq. Write - 70 MB/s Seq. Read - 105 MB/s Buffered Write - 59 MB/s Buffered Read - 62 MB/s Random Reading - 54 MB/s This drive is faster than the kin Seagate inside my laptop as the main disk. For those of you who can't use it internally or through esata, you will not see this kind of performance, the theoretical throughput of USB 2.0 is almost half the seq. read. These tests are run through PC Wizard 2008, important, with the jumper installed. I didn't wish to assume people know what it is and know if their sata controller can use it removed. The performance is slightly better, but nothing substantial, without the jumper (it effectively dubs the drive down to sata 1).I've basically torture tested this drive since I received it almost a month ago, it is perfect. Generally, I've found, drives fail sooner than later; this drive will most likely serve me for quite some time.I recommend this drive over any other, if the performance is not higher (Hitachi's are snoozfest), then the fail rate is much much lower (Samsung's new 1TB is notoriously bad, unacceptably high fail rate). etc.

Is it even possible for a single human being to accumulate 1TB of digital stuff worth storing? Honestly, I'm not really sure what to do with this much hard-drive. I'll just have to start hording pornography and downloading pirated movies.1TB is a huge capacity. Even our small office has yet to fill more than 250GB of our 1TB Server storage. Still, I've found its easier to buy more disk space than I'll need anytime soon and consolidating all my stuff on one drive. It's a little riskier, that's true, but if you have data you don't want to lose then you should be making backups anyway.BTW, this is a great price for the product. The local BB had the 16mb cache version for $180.00, and I was about to grab it but I checked on Amazon first and found the 32mb cache for just a few dollars more. Sweet deal.Seagate has a reputation as a reliable brand for storage drives, and I find they tend to run better than Maxtor and other "bargain" brands. That doesn't mean they won't crash on you, but it might improve your chances of getting a sturdy product. If you're worried about shipping, just remember that these drives don't show up in your local retail outlet's receiving bay nestled on soft pillows held aloft by angels. The Seagate packaging is tight, and the Amazon box is the usual deal with the plastic air packets. Good enough.Make sure you actually have a SATA connection. This is different from the usual 19-pin deal. Most new computers will use SATA, but if you're not sure what you've got then check it out before you toss this in the cart.

Sadly I must write a one star review on this product. I've been a Seagate Customer for years, but not happy with this drive.Initially I purchsed it for installation in my DVR - 24/7 usage. At first it seemed okay, but after a month or so, I noticed some slow downs & hiccups on the DVR. Finally in Mid November my DVR was behaving like it was possessed; culminating in me waking up one morning to the DVR rebooting endlessly trying to repair itself, finally ending in what's known as the green screen of death.A surface scan & SMART error code checking; the drive was failing in a massive way, more than 30% of the surface was testing as failed. I can probably format it and get more life out of it; but I have no faith in it. I purchased Seagate ST31000340AS 1TB Barracuda Sata 7200 Rpm 32MB Cache 8.5MS Hard Drive instead. I also noticed that my DVR is performing faster than it ever did with this drive; so something could have been wrong from the outset.Since I'm not within the 30 day return period and not messing with the manufacturer return or RMA process hassle, I've eaten the cost of this drive. It may have been the 24/7 environment, but you'd think with the higher priced version of this drive it would perform well -- it didn't.

This drive does essentially what you need it to. The installation was easy and the software included kind of makes it easier. This is about my fifth hard drive in my current PC and so far no problems. Price wise it may be better to go with a terabyte instead since programs are getting bigger and bigger. I have almost filled this one up with back ups of current things I have and I find myself wishing I had the larger drive instead. I have had it for about six or seven months now and no problems. I have read a lot of reviews and some were bad and I have really gathered that hard drives are good or not they will fail or not. I have never had a hard drive fail yet so I know my chances are getting better for it to happen. So far no problems with this drive and if it does occur I will update this. Overall give it a buy since the price is very nice but like I said a terabyte is nicer.

I bought this for my Antec Sonata III case, planing on a very quiet pc. I was so a little disapointed on the noice level. As the description says "whisper quiet", it isnt reallt that quiet. You wouldn't really hear anything if you have your fans making all the noice, but since all my fans are very quiet, I do hear this hard disk above all other, and it was very anoying the first few days. But after a while I got used to it and know dont hear a thing. For a 500GB Seagate HD you can hardly get a better price, so I recommend this product.

Be careful with this drive, Seagate has a known problem with many of it's recent Baracuda High Capacity Hard Drives, where after 3-6 months, the drive simply fails to boot.If you purchase this drive, you must go to the [..] site and use the drive detect software they offer there to see what version of firmware is on your drive. If there is an updated version of firmware then you need to flash update your drive. If you are uncomfortable doing this, then i would suggest buying another vendor's drive. The master seagate forum thread discussing these problems is here: [..] (well over a thousand messages). You can also do a search for "ST3100034AS problems" on google.

Seagate stands behind this product with a 5 year warrantee. I've tried all the brands over the years, both IDE, SATA and SCSI, and nobody makes failure proof disk drives. I've sent back drives to everyone. SCSI will last you much longer with better performance, but at a much higher price point. I have six of these in various machines and they're quite satisfactory. You will probably be looking at 1TB models after summer 2008, but there are some heat and noise issues some report with those units. These are satisfactory in that regard. SATA is an improvement in some respects, but not hugely different in performance from IDE on most machines.

I purchased this drive in September '08 and it crashed less than two months later. No warning signs--drive just failed. I was shocked because the Seagate name was highly recommended by a friend. Sure, the drive had an extra-long warranty and sure this could happen with any brand, but still a major pain in the ### dealing wih the aftermath. Fortunately I had all of my info backed up on an external HD. Less than two months out of this drive is ridiculous, after all, this is not a no-name company. Strangely enough, the drive that failed before this one was a Maxtor (which is also manfactured by Seagate). Seagate's customer service was not very helpful.

I purchased this Seagate 1TB harddrive from Amazon, it arrived within a few days. It was snuggled in a larger amazon box with a few air-pillows keeping it secure.I was a little disappointed the drive doesn't read as a full TB, but I guess thats okay. The drive was easy to install, open the computer case, discharge any static electricity from your fingers then install the new drive with a screw driver. Plug the sata cable into your harddrive and the other end to the correct sata port on your motherboard.Plug in the power cable to the harddrive then turn on your computer.Use the seagate disc to install the tools you need to set up the harddrive. Select if you want it as a boot drive or just a secondary drive, then set the partition sizes. Thats about it.I used the tools to clone my original boot drive then in bios set the drive to boot up and everything went smoothly with no problems...I highly recommend this drive, it has plenty of space for pictures and downloaded video.

This drive has been nothing short of amazing throughout the six months that I've owned and used it. It's very quiet, ultra-fast and extremely reliable. I've had two Western Digital HDD's and one Hitachi that failed very early. I'd like to get my jab in by saying that both of their customer support numbers and sites were worthless. I've never had to use Seagate's.I currently have this HDD mounted in my Klegg MediaShare (I love this thing!) unit. I've backed up approximately 360 of my DVD's (ISO format) to it using DVD Fab Platinum and DVD Shrink 3.2 and can now downsize my storage space for the originals to four 100-disc spindles instead of three media cabinets. I highly recommend both products as they are both high quality. Seagate is the only brand that I've had truly had success with over the years and I consider myself a loyal customer because of their reliability and performance.
