This was an exact model replacement to an identical model drive that failed to initialize and S.M.A.R.T. This replacement drive has had no issues and is running fine in a Synology DS1511+ NAS with four other identical model drives. They are fast and quiet.Amazon's RMA process is the best. I simply chose to return a drive as part of the options on my order. I was able to print a pre-paid UPS return label and Amazon simultaneously shipped this replacement drive. I got the replacement drive two days before UPS tracking showed Amazon received the faulty one.I suppose this is as much a review of Amazon's RMA process as it is the product itself. I am happy with both. From what I can tell in these reviews, many people will have to RMA the hard drives. Seagate has an above average policy for warranty, but if the problem happens within Amazon's return policy it is that much easier to take care of.You should definitely get the product out of the box and burning-in on a system ASAP to expose any problems.

Over the past or so I have purchase a number of these drives. failure rate is in excess of 50% after 1 year. I would definitely NOT RECOMMEND. I have had much better success with WD Caviar Blue with a 0% failure rate over a 9 month period.

So this went on sale for around $46 a few weeks ago and since I needed some extra space, I decided to pick one up (or order it, rather). I had read reviews on it prior to buying it and people said it wasn't very reliable, but since my primary hard drive had comments like that and it has worked perfect for me, I thought hey, my other one worked regardless of other peoples' comments, this one should too. Boy was I wrong.For the first few days, I didn't really use it a whole lot, because I was playing it safe so I wouldn't lose anything if it did die on me. Well, I started using it more and more, and I started recording my gameplay videos straight to it using Fraps, which should not affect anything. Everything was going smooth until I had been recording for about an hour when my second hard drive (this one) decided to just crash on me. I closed everything and checked My Computer; the hard drive didn't show up. After freaking out a bit, I restarted my computer and checked it again, this time the second drive showing up. I didn't think too much of it, but I definitely kept it in mind.Since then, the hard drive has "crashed" or whatever 3 or so times and let me tell you, it gets quite annoying. Today I was copying around 228 GB of video from my external hard drive to the second drive (this one) and after about 30 minutes of copying, the drive failed once again. I really don't know what is going on. I don't know if it's how I have it set up or if the hard drive itself is just a crappy drive. Whatever it is, it's not good.To summarize this, just get a different drive and save yourself the time and money. Don't think like I did. Read reviews carefully and make the right choice so you don't end up writing a bad review, like myself. lol

First off, let me start by saying that I have never reviewed any item purchased through Amazon to date. I base a lot of my purchases on what advice others offer. That being said, I was EXTREMELY skeptical about ordering this drive. I have read many reviews lately about Seagate and WDD hard drives arriving DOA, or failing after a few days. I decided to take the risk, and so far, I am happy I did. The drive seemed to have no problems setting up. I ran through the Seagate Disc Wizard, as was suggested, and it fired up flawlessly.While I won't be loading the drive up with important files anytime soon, I think if you are looking for a nice size hard drive at a decent price, give it a shot. If your drive does arrive DOA, Amazon is great about refunds and returns...just approach with caution until you determine if the drive can be trusted.

I always buy components from Amazon. I made an exception in this case, bought an emachine from Wallmart, December 2010. her computer died just before Christmas and I had to get her up and running fast. (She works from home) It is 13 months old and the hard drive is dead. One month out of emachine warrnty. No support from the mfg. If I had known it had a Seagate in it, I would have bought another brand from Amazon and paid for rush shipping. I've built three machines and upgraded two with the biggest portion of the hardware comming from Amazon, all perfect and the service is great.As to this drive: it can be had for less and Amazon sells a newer, and I hope more reliable version, BUT IS STILL SEGATE. JUST KEEP THAT IN MIND. When it fails, you will have a real company on your side and if it's less than a year old, can rest assured that Amazon will make it right.

I got this Seagate internal hard drive with the Amazon gold box deal of a sweet $46.99 price. A price range of $47 - $60 is very good for a 1TB hard drive that also has 7200 rpm and 6gb/s.So far, after about a week's usage, I've experienced faster loading and data transfer. It has been only a week but I will update in couple months whether the drive performs well or fails (I'm hoping I won't need to update you all regarding failures).-Personally for me, I used this drive as a secondary drive for my PC. I installed Windows 7 on a Western Digital 500 GB Caviar Blue SATA 3 Gb/s 7200 RPM 16 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive - WD5000AAKS. I install programs, games, and add movies to this as a secondary hard drive so that I could load quickly for my PC. If you have any trouble installing this hard drive as a secondary drive, here are instructions on how I did it:1) Connect the Sata power and sata cable before turning on the PC2) Load up your BIOS to make sure your computer reads it3) If your computer loads up and it reads the drive, then you're fine. Horray 931GB of storage. If you don't see the seagate drive available yet, update the drive with Seagate's firmware for this product. Here's the link : [...]4) After finishing up the firmware update (perhaps will need to restart), Search for Disk management, or under Administrative Tools reading "Create or format hard disk partitions." From there you should see the Seagate 1TB hard drive. Now you should be able to format the hard drive and you're good to go.Overall, I'm fairly happy so far. It's very quiet for a hard drive that has 1Tb and is 7200rpm.

I don't know the particulars about speed and performance and whatnot, but I've been using this as a media drive for video editing in an external enclosure and so far it's given me great performance. When I switch the enclosure on, the hard drive starts and mounts within 3 to 5 seconds, read/write speed is fine, rarely any lagging. It does the job just fine.

I used this 1TB drive to replace a 750GB drive (also Seagate Barracuda 7200) in an HP All In One. It was pretty easy to remove and replace, using the instructions found on the net. It's quiet, and just as responsive as the other one was. Because it's such a large drive, some operations such as formatting, surface scans, etc., take a while. The previous (750GB) drive was having intermittent failures and nothing helped, so I rebuilt the system on the 1TB drive. It took me about 10 hours to rebuild, including applying 160 or so Win7 updates. There's some stuff on the old drive that's not fully backed up, so I will have to get it moved if possible. Anyway, I'm very happy with the new drive and its performance. It came in a double box with absolutely no paper, but installation was so simple it didn't matter (and saved some landfill space).

I bought this to replace the hard drive in my iMac. It died 4 months later and Seagate are enormously difficult to deal with. After spending lots of time on hold, they tell me they can't troubleshoot a hard drive in a Mac and will only offer a replacement if I can tell them the serial number (it's inside my iMac...how am i supposed to supply the serial number) and the receipt isn't good enough proof and I have to pay to send it back in order to get the replacement drive and it takes 2 weeks!!!! Although if you give them $10 they will replace it more quickly, but you still need the serial number. Don't buy Seagate and don't buy this drive.

This hard drive will NOT work IF, you are installing windows 7 on a brand new build. Windows 7 installer will not detect this hard drive, therefore had to use an older one. if you can somehow partition and format this drive before starting the installer, it might have a chance of reading it. but its a painfully long process and id rather just skip all that, so i bought another hard drive and it worked just fine. another solution would be to install windows XP first on the drive, then just upgrade to windows 7. but i cant afford to buy XP just to install 7.

I love this drive. I have a pretty hefty machine I put together in my recording studio last year, but never bought the 6gbps drives that are supposed to go into it. This thing has gotten rid of the latency time between hitting the note on a guitar or keyboard and hearing the fully processed sound. This was probably the single-most valuable addition to this PC this year. :)

Nice deal on this Seagate drive. When it arrived, I was unable to install it because the SATA cable, mounting screws, instruction book and software was not included. I called Seagate and they told me to contact Amazon. (It took 30 minutes to reach Seagate). I called Amazon and they told me to contact Seagate or return the item.Since I am a bit technically inclined I borrowed the SATA cable from my old computer and went through my 30 pound screw collection to find the proper screws then through the 10 pound collection of washers to find the correct lock washers. Then downloaded the free software from Seagate (There was no mention that it would work with Windows 7 - come on Seagate!!)Had I not added hard drives in the past, I would have been stuck. Shame on Amazon not indicating that cables, screws, manual, etc. were not included. Shame on Seagate for not offering to send the missing items as a goodwill gesture. This is considered a BARE DRIVE or bulk drive with you having to find the parts, etc.PS: I called Best Buy and the Geek Squad did not have a SATA cable in stock, but could order one for $29. They don't sell mounting screws. Amazon has a vendor who sold me 2 SATA cables for $1.57 with FREE SHIPPING.

first thing i did when i got this HDD was run a disc check to see if it was running.. and the check came up BAD DISC from the get go... luckily its still under warranty so im going to see if seagate will replace it for me..

I bought this on a goldstar special because I had a "feeling" my resident hard drive was going to throw a hissy fit. This was before my troubles began. Yep, my 600 GB drive started losing space even though I wasn't using any space. Sometimes it would go, sometimes it would be stable. I have had it for a while and wasn't using any significant space until I started converting VHS and CD to digital formats. But I had tons of space and I was archiving to my external drives. But the space was disappearing. I'm still not sure what the problem was. Vista? Virus? Worms? I ran all the malware, disk allocations, disk saving stuff but nothing was detected. Checked all the info I could find. Some things were found by CCleaner, but no space gobblers.So I gave in when the hard drive had chewed up all but 37 GB, and I had only about 100 GB of files, plus the stuff in the program directorys. All of that space with nothing in it.I installed the seagate with the W7 system I have and things seem to have calmed down. I had to get the power and data cables, but they are cheap. Installation is a breeze when you have the ducks in a row.But this is one of the noisiest drives I've ever had. It's like a popcorn machine under a bunch of blankets. I've had it in just 2 days, so I can't remark on its longevity.But if it is reliable as my other Seagates, it should be just fine. (I hope)

.01 STARS.....I have had this hard drive now for about 2yrs. It was a backup drive so it was used very little. Maybe 10-15x the past 2yrs. I haven't used it in almost 3months and tried today. It would not work. The hard drive is completely dead and nothing can be done about.(I am a computer tech) I lost EVERYTHING!, as this was my only backup drive. This was the 1st Seagate I have bought and will not buy another one. I will stick with Hitachi drives from now on.Seagate= Garbage+Headache!!!!!!

I purchased this drive on 8/1/11 and installed it on an HP slimline. Within a couple of days the computer crashed and had to be booted from CD bootable disk. It was fine for a while then in December it finally crashed. I ran both PC dotor diagnostic and the SEATOOLS diagnostic available from:([...])both diagnostic tests showed a fatal error. Amazon only gives you 30 day rteturn and Seagate will replace the drive if you pay shipping (about $10).By the way Seagate gave me no problems and they were extremely helpful and responsive. The problem I have is that this drive didn't last very long. I had concerns about buying it after reading other's comments about the drive. I will get a replacement and see how that works out.

Great price. Good discs. I used them to replace my existing 6 yr old discs in office computers. I used the Acronis copy software and make disc copies and let the new disks continue and removed and saved the old discs( in case need to re clone)

Very disappointing. My first "home build" used this; everything was fine for a few days. Left it for a few days, came back, and the HD was dead--not recognized by my system. Switched out cables, changed connections--no go. Getting a replacement no problem but can I rely on this thing. Sounds like there's a very high fail rate with these drives

So I bought this for my boy friends laptop, we actually ordered the wrong one. He decided to keep it to put in his desktop. I am actually disappointed with the fact, the one time I might have had to return a product, their was no paperwork included...

I've heard seagate drives fail a lot. I've been using this drive for about two months now and haven't had any issues with it. Speed is good and it's fairly quiet, even in my average rating case. I guess I can't complain :) or at least yet :)

Very satisfied with this product. Was able to enable the NCQ function on the AHCI drive controller. Seems to me that the ST...AS series of seagate drives are very decent. I've owned 2 of those for more than 2 years with no issues.

I bought this HDD to replace a failed 4 year old drive in my NAS RAID array. As expected, it dropped right in and the NAS formatted and synced it with the other drives. No issues. I expect to replace them again in about 2-3 years since no disk drives dependably last in continuous service much longer than that. Seagate Barracudas have always performed very well in my systems, both laptops and desktops. Excellent equipment.

I have purchased 3 Seagate 1 Tb drives in the last several years, and 2 out of three had to be returned because they were DOA. Seagate had better start paying attention to their manufacturing because their reputation is taking a big hit.

I needed a new storage hard drive for my desktop computer. I don't keep any excess files on my primary hard drive for numerous reasons, but mainly so I don't slow down performance or lose files during a crash. I seen this 1TB 7200.12 RPM SATA hard drive being sold by Amazon for $50 which it must have been on sale because it went back up to $60 right after I bought it. $10 off is a steal. This drive is great for any type of files documents, music, pictures, videos and any file size out there too. It holds steady at sustained speeds of 100 megabytes and higher depending on file sizes and how many files you are copying. Overall I love the amount of space the drive has as well as its astonishing performance. I will buy more of these to expand my storage space in the future.

I wanted an internal hard drive for a laptop. This came up in the search and I saw 1TB and fast speed and decided it was the best drive for the money. If it actually fit in a laptop it would have been great. I had to send it back. This is an internal drive for a desktop computer, not a laptop.

Before buying this drive, you should know that it is TRULY a "bare" drive. There are no connecting cables, manual, or anything else other than the physical drive itself. To install the drive you will need the SATA data cable, an appropriate power connection inside the box (or a Y splitter), and a good working knowledge of the drive initialization process for your operating system.That being said, once installed and configured, the drive works flawlessly. It is quick, quiet and (so far) dependable. It is also a very good value for the price, especially with Amazon's prompt return policy if you happen to get the rare lemon.If you have the cables and know what you're doing, I would definitely recommend this product. I have always had good experiences with Seagate drives, and this one strikes a nice balance between speed, capacity and price.

I purchased two Seagate drives for my Netgear NAS unit which was getting full. I wasn't sure why I had to purchase special drives as recommended by Netgear until I installed these two. They have special connectors which are not usually found on normal PC motherboards. All I had to do was slip them into the two open bays and the unit automatically sync'd the drives and in about an hour or so everything was working great. Couldn't have been any easier.

I ordered my first drive on Monday, Sept 26th. Upon connecting it to my computer, I got a warning "Smart Fail". After running Seagate's SeaTools for Windows, it said "Smart - Fail" and told me I need to replace the drive. I requested an RMA, and the next day, I got another one. Same problem. Hopefully the third time's a charm, but if the third one doesn't work, I'll most likely ask for a refund and purchase a drive made in Singapore instead of a Seagate made in China.Edit - July 6th 2012 - The drive just died. Now it won't even power up. My other hard drive in the raid array works just fine.

I bought this hard drive for about 42 dollars less than 4 months ago and the price is around 100 dollars now? I'm rather confused as to why this has happened. But all in all this hard drive has no failed me yet. Boot times are about 30 seconds from power on to windows aero fully loaded. I have no complaints about this drive, except the drastic price change. Before I saw the price I was thinking about buying another, but I guess that changed my mind.

I'm reluctant about solid states still, but really think they just need a couple more years of development to be perfected. For that reason I chose to get two 7200 drives and run them in RAID 0. Two of these things (use HDTunePro to test their stability individually first) in RAID have the same speed as one leading brand SSD. I play too many large games and FRAPS them too much to feel comfortable getting a decently priced SSD let alone two, and with these I get about 20 times the space for the same price. I knew what I wanted and I got it with these. Had to send one drive back because it was unstable, but that's why I bought it from Amazon, cause they send you a new one right away for free.

this hard drive didnt even show up in bios used multiple cables and connections to motherboard still no response. for the price i paid and having to pay shipping to return the item i feel ripped off. sorry amazon but this product was frustrating for hours of troubleshooting. in the end was just one big headache

The disk arrived quickly and ran fine for about 1 day. It then caused a blue-screen failure, and then would not boot (it was my boot disk). Finally, it was not even recognized by the BIOS, or a live-CD Linux. I used different SATA and power connectors on it with no luck. The return process is pretty painless, so I'll see how the replacement disk fares. I'll change the rating if the replacement works OK.The new one came and works fine. It does what a disk is supposed to, so I've upgraded my rating (down one star for the hassle of getting a bad one).

Bought two drives and one died in about 3 weeks past my return window for it. When it worked, it was fast, very quiet and trouble free. Turn on the computer the next day and the computer boots extremely slowly and there is now a faint beeping noise from the case. Windows finally boots and the drive is no longer recognized. The other drive was used as a backup, so at least most of my data remains. Luckily amazon is taking it back.

Selling point for this drive as quoted from Seagate."Now delivering predicted failure rates of 0.34%, the Barracuda hard drive continues to provide industry-leading reliability."I ordered two and one died in less than 24hours with very little use, the above should read 50%. While I personally prefer Seagate products this Drive OEMs warranty eludes me, I believe its 5 years but can't find that on Seagate's website and isn't stated on Amazon's site. Amazon is taking the HDD back without any issues and that's why I like to buy from them. Hopefully I will have no issues once the replacement arrives. I am using this in a NAS with RAID 1 so the other drive is in degraded mode at this point, to drill my point about how little this drive was used all I did was install the NAS software and made a few user/folder changes no data other then NAS software was installed.Maybe the shipper was to rough for this drive I don't know but this is my experience.
