When I read the reviews on this drive, I initially passed them up. After the price dropped just before Christmas, they were too inexpensive pass up. I bought a couple and set them up in a RAID 1 external cabinet and set them as the backup device for Time Machine. After nearly a month of spinning full time, I haven't any issues with the drives. Additionally, the drives are much quieter than reports led me to believe. They are not as quiet as my Hitachi 2TB drives, but certainly not loud.

Despite this drive being only 5900 rpm it worked great as an external drive. I say worked because after less than a year the drive failed on me. This is the second seagate drive I have had fail on me in two weeks. I will not buy another seagate drive.

Purchased this drive for my Windows Home Server (HP). I inserted the drive into the tray and added it to the drive pool, that was it.It's working great so far.

i have it for a month now, and don't have any problems so far.i'm using it for storage to share data in a small home network(7 PCs), so far fast, quiet, and reliable.i bought the item for $70 so it is a good value. it runs at 5900 rpm but the drive is not slow compared with mine WD 7200 , i would say it performs a little better for now, it's not full though(30% of its capacity so far).the drive is good fro storage and general use, i would recommend this drive at the above price.

I ordered 6 of these drives, 5 to put in Synology DS1010+ and one to keep on-hand for a spare. I ordered 3 drives from Amazon along with the Synology, and 3 drives from newegg. The 3 drives from Amazon are all "Made In China" and the 3 from newegg are "Made in Thailand". The Amazon drives were boxed individually and well protected, not able to bump around into each other during shipping.Over Gigabit Ethernet, the 5900RPM just won't be any issue. I still get over 110MB/sec transfers from the Synology. The drives have all been working fine and have passed multiple SMART tests.These drives DO take a few seconds to spin up if you allow them to spin down after idle. This will cause "freezes" if you use these in your PC, while the PC waits for the drive to spin up. If that's a problem for you, don't allow them to spin down in your power settings.The Synology DS1010+ and 5 drives together use about 55 Watts total. Very low power compared to leaving my main workstation on all the time (at least 250 Watts when idle). Now my HTPC and STB's can access shares when my main PC is off.

Won't rehash what everyone's already said. These are great drives. I have about 15 of them on a ReadyaNAS network and multiple computers right now. They've been working great for months!

Four of these drives failed the SeaTools diagnostic out of the box. PeriodI have exclusively purchased Seagate drives for many years. Seagate needs to thoroughly review their entire QC department in China. Seagate is about to lose me as a long time customer since I can no longer trust their hard drives.

Quiet, massive capacity, lower power consumption. Perfect for storage at 5900 rpm. It would be better with 64 MB cache though. Otherwise, a good drive. Faster and more reliable than WD Green drives.

My 2TB Seagate drive just died after a couple weeks. And I didn't even use it really. The drive starts to make clicking sounds and it won't boot up. I bought this drive for 60 bucks in Black Fridays, but now I regret paying for this piece of UNRELIABLE product. PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM SEAGATE drive even if it is really cheap, because it will give u headache. I WILL NEVER BUY ANY SEAGATE DRIVE AGAIN !

I ordered two of these for a NAS station, so far so good, quiet and low on energy intake. lets hope their quality lasts, being that they are less than enterprise quality.

Because of NAS power saving feature, power up sound makes me nervous. But, it seems to be working ok so far. Didn't notice extreme heat after heavy usage. For the price, I think it's a good choice to store bits.

I bought this drive "knowing" that it would be considerably slower than any SATA drive I have owned. I was right...Because of the lonnnng hang time, I feel like I have stepped back into 1996 with the slowest of slow 8GB IDE drive.Here are my specs: Intel E8400/3.00GHZ - 8GB RAM - 1GB Radeon 4760 (PCI EX) - 3 1TB hard drives of various flavorsfrom Western Digital, Samsung (will never buy another again = went through 3 in the span of a month) and a Hitachi Desk-something or other (((will buy again - fast and haven't had any problems whatsoever))) I bought the drive because I wanted to store VHD's (Hyper-V) and I knew that with the 5900 ceiling I was going to hit a wall of data and have consistently done so. I tried moving 267GB's of data over and it said that it was going to take 1 hour, no biggy because I was going to go to sleep. When I woke in the morning (4 hours of sleep) it said that I had 3 hours to go! As far as running an OS on the thing, I tried on a lark (I like pain) and my PC ran slow as well, heck.I was tempted to return the thing but the $$'s spent and I'm guessing that someday I will like the thing. Prolly not! If you aren't used to 7200RPM SATA drives, I would say go for it - Me? I'm set for a while...

The best drives at the best price, what more can you ask for.Just be sure to note that these do not come with SATA or power cables, or mounting screws. Also, mine actually came in boxes adorned with the Western Digital WD logo! The product label on the box was Seagate, and they are the correct product, also I assume they are not used or refurbished, but that was an odd thing that I can't really explain.

I've had three of these drives for about 4 months now. I've been beating them up pretty hard with a lot of disk access. They're performing as expected. I consistently saw greater than 90MB/sec speeds when writing to them from a regular SATA interface. I've just moved them to an Areca 1210 card in a RAID5 configuration. I still see 80+MB/sec writing to them, even with them being in the RAID5 config. The card pretty much erases any noticeable overheard usually seen when writing to a RAID5 array.These drives replaced a pair of Western Digital 'green' drives. Those crapped out within a week of use.I've got quite a few other Seagate drives in use and have been pretty pleased with their performance and reliability.

I bought two of these to install into a Netgear ReadyNAS NV+. I have been running the NAS for two months and everything works fine. They do not appear to be noisy and I have not seen any disk errors. For the price these were a great deal.

Had a problem with one of the original 4 not working, called and they sent a new one while we returned the other. All working. no problems detected so far and we've had them in place almost a month now.

I've had terrible luck with Seagate drives over the past year so I'm very cautious of what I put on this drive because I honestly expect it to fail for three reasons. One reason is my past experience with Seagate drives, 2nd is that this drive has a plethora of negative reviews over on NewEgg, and third Amazon (vine) did an embarrassingly bad job of packaging this drive for shipment. Amazon shipped the drive in the anti-static bag with one air pack that eventually popped. So this drive was free to bang around in an empty box all the way to my house. I've bought several HD's from Amazon before and they always had decent packaging so I'm not sure if this poor packaging was only due to it coming from the Vine program. Nonetheless, it's unacceptable. I did run a full drive test on it with Seagate's drive tools (something you get familiar with when RMAing four drives in 12 months!) and the drive passed. During the several hour long tests I did encounter a number of concerning clicking noises. These didn't sound good but I'm not sure if they are normal for these LP drives. The NewEgg complaints are always "clicking to death" so again I'm not thinking this is a positive sign. So in the end I have a very big drive that seems to work fine, but I have no faith in it. Not a good feeling!

It was the first thing I purchased in building my new tower. I had not ordered my MB or Processor yet and now I'm waiting for the processor to be delivered before I start the build. I let you know what happens when that happens!Well I have had it up and running since the holidays and it's now August 2011 and it operates as expected!!

At the time it was the best deal on a 2 TB drive that I have ever seen.No problems so far, but then I am only using it for backup of a Samsung SpinPoint 2 TB so speed and noise is not a big deal for me in this situation.

Had mine since Apr 2010 no problems. Sea Tools reports it's still healthy. Quite. I would buy again. Btw, all my hdd's are Seagate.

Received 2 out of 9 DOA (from various places), had to RMA it and haven't gotten around to setting up the rest into a large raid array. I'm sceptical about using these for any real data now.

Holds lots of Space 2 TBs.You will have to format drive (In the OS Ubuntu its so easy to format to fat 32 that could be read on almost all operating systems) and is considered a green drive because when not in operation will spindle down to save power.
