ORIGINAL REVIEW JANUARY 2011: I bought the 2TB Seagate "green" drive for capturing video from my VCR tapes to convert them to AVI for editing. The drive was a little too slow however and kept dropping regions from long video captures. After 40 minutes of capturing it would show a large file but would only retrieve the last few minutes of it. I repeated the process several times with the same result.I solved the problem by capturing video onto my main 7200 rpm drive, then transferring the files to the Seagate for editing and storage. That added an extra step to the process but it worked. Apparently the 3Gb/sec. rating is for reading and playback only, not writing.UPDATE MAY 14, 2012: - The drive died without warning. All data unretrievable. I was using it for storage of video, business graphics, website data, pictures and the entire "My Documents" file. It was working at 1AM when I shut it down but would not be recognized the next day at boot up. Yes I took it out, put it in external devices and tested it several different ways but could not retrieve data. The motor spins quietly but with no data output whatsoever. So if it's too slow for video capture or for use as a main drive, and unreliable for longer term storage, what good is it? It must be still under warranty but I'm not certain that I really want another one just like it. Hmph...

As I was installing this drive in my Mac Pro yesterday, it really struck me that a device with the same footprint as a 320 MEGABYTE drive that came installed on my 90 Mhz Pentium fifteen years ago can now hold two TERABYTES. Truly staggering how fast technology is improving.Seagate has been producing storage devices since the late seventies, and I've always found their products to mostly be reliable and trouble-free. This new drive is no exception. It installs easily (as all drives do) and is fast enough for high definition video editing from an AVCHD source. This frustration free packaging edition comes with just the bare drive, no cables or screws are included. This is also the latest in a new line of "green" hard drives coming from major storage manufacturers, rotating at 5900 RPM (most larger drives tend to spin at 7200). The slower rotation speed results in slightly longer drive latency times, so replacing a 7200 rpm drive with this one for a boot drive might result in a slight reduction in performance.Still, a two terabyte drive is best suited for long term storage such as photos, videos, large files, etc. And if that is an intended goal you need to continue shopping once this item is added to your cart for a reliable backup solution. No matter how great the manufacturer hard drives will eventually fail and die. These are tiny and complex machines with parts spinning thousands of times per minute. The fact they work at all is a miracle!I suggest buying two or more comparably sized external drives and develop a backup strategy that includes rotating the backup drives offsite (work, second home, safe deposit box, etc). On the Mac it's easy, simply have Time Machine do the work for you. On the PC, find something that works and develop a regular plan of backing up your work. There are online services that can securely (but slowly) back your data as well.Given how my Mac Pro is a glutton when it comes to electricity, I doubt this power saving drive will result in any kind of reduction in my monthly electric bill. Still, this is an affordable way to add a significant amount of storage. Just be sure to back it up.One other note -- Amazon did not package this drive well for shipping to me. It was protected only by plastic air pillows, a few of which deflated by the time the drive arrived. It would be better if they followed the lead of other distributors of bare drives and wrap them in bubble wrap to protect shocks during shipping.

After a lot of research, I purchased 5 of these hard drives to use in a QNAP TS 659 pro+ NAS enclosure that I also purchased from Amazon.I was worried about some of the reports that stated people had issues with these in a raid setting. I was also woried about people mentioning the packaging was really poor through amazon. I am happy to report that the shipping box(es) that I received from amazon had air bubble pillow style packaging, as well as each individual hard drive was in a separate box inside of the main box, in a proper suspension setup. There were no cables, disks, etc, as is normal with a BARE DRIVE type of hard drive package. After installation and testing, I found no bad sectors. My raid is building now, and I will update this review if necessary.Of note, I performed a firmware flash of my HDDs before installation after reading multiple recommendations from various website,s including a seagate form. I had to "force" the update on the drives, which can be done by following the directions at the following web site: [...].This is a Seagate form, so I felt comfortable performing a force update. No clicking, no issues so far. Great price for a 2TB HDD. I can buy 2 spare drives and still it will not equal the price of 1 "raid class" HDD.

No issues.Update 5:1 year of trouble-free operation.Update 4:10 full months of trouble-free operation.Update 3:7 full months of trouble-free operation.Update 2:5 full months of trouble-free operation.Others have written about quickly experienced "clicks of death" with this drive.Mine has worked fine out the box, and has kept doing so since day one (when I ran multiple tests with some large data transfers. This is fine product: reasonably priced and lots of storage. As the product description states, this is an OEM "bare drive" package. It arrived with only the bare drive in an anti-static envelope (no SATA cable or mounting screws).I did not have an available drive bay in my computer, so I first mounted this drive in an external SATA hard drive enclosure that connects to a computer via USB cable. I used the Antec MX-100 3.5-Inch USB Aluminum Enclosure for SATA Hard Drive. The drive ships unformatted. I used Windows 7 disk management tools to label the volume, assign a drive letter and format the drive (I used NTFS). It was immediately recognized by multiple computers running Windows XP and Windows 7 after doing so. The full capacity of the drive was indicated in both operating systems, even though I was connecting via the external USB 2 interface.I ran this drive for approximately 12 straight hours of constant read/write operations without issue; little noise or heat could be heard or felt from the external enclosure.I then removed it from the enclosure and swapped it out with an older, lower capacity SATA drive inside my PC (which has two internal hard drives). After installation, Windows 7 immediately recognized the new Seagate drive and the full available capacity (1.8TB available after formatting). Finally, I would echo the comment of one other reviewer that Amazon overachieved in its "frustration free packaging" quest. This package shipped from Nevada to California to the east coast. It bore the scars of many of those 3000+ miles, and there was a little too much room inside the box for the disk to bounce around for my comfort. I consider this an Amazon --rather than a Seagate issue-- and it did not appear to have caused any damage to the drive (even if the box wasn't very pretty upon arrival).

I purchased this internal hard drive along with an enclosure to use as an external HD for my Dell Dimension 5150. Setup was easy, however, I had never done this before so a slight learning curve was encountered. I found instructions online and everything went together nicely. It was not necessary to change settings on the drive; it is done automatically and as long as the switch is turned on, the drive will be recognized. Do not attempt to change the BIOS!I like how the added drive automatically gives me an additional 2 TB of storage--more than enough room for all my photos, videos, even enough to back up the entire system. This allows me to extend the life of a relatively fast, but five-year-old computer.Backup is fast, noise level is somewhat noticeable but not distracting. The unit seems to stay cool, which was a potential problem if it did not. I have it set up alongside my flat screen monitor and it is handy and takes up no more space that a VHS tape box.Time will tell how reliable it proves to be, but for now, it was a good move and is working perfectly.I used a Coolmax 3.5" external enclosure (Model HD-389-U2(SATA).

I found this drive to be as quiet a drive as any I've had. When they say a 'Bare Drive' they mean it. But having said that the drive performs flawlessly. I had to purchase a separate SATA data and power cable which I found on Amazon at a very fair price. It also came in a 'Frustration-Free Packaging' box. No complaints here just a concern. It was so easy to open, the box wasn't even taped shut. I was glad to see the drive in the box when I got it and not some weighted object in place of. The box flap that tucks into the sides of the box did hold it together nicely. I thought a jumper setting was going to be necessary coming from an IDE and older BIOS background but it turned out not so. The computer recognized it immediately and I was up and running in no time. I got the drive nearly a week earlier than Amazon's projected receive date. Would recommend Amazon to any and all who have yet to shop here. Deals are great. Shipping is first rate. They have a well organized and laid out site unencumbered by glitz and glamor. They are a pleasure to deal with. And from someone who has limited access to the local shopping malls they are the next best thing. Why put up with brick and mortar stores' foot traffic when you can shop from your home. Thanks Amazon. Happy Holidays.

My Seagate harddrive stopped working 2 days after I bought it. When you buy harddrive, look for the brand with higher reliability because you don't want to return your harddrive.First, harddrive usually dies without any symtoms. When it fails, it fails immediately. Once it stops working, you cannot retrieve or remove any data. There are two things you can do, either you return it for repair, or discard it.If you decide to return it for repair, most likely they will give you a refurbished (used) harddrive. In the other words, it could be returned by someone or it was defective before and repaired. So the reliability of it is not guaranteed. Also, you will need to pay for shipping and handling (usually $8 + $20 = $28).Another thing is the data security. Your defected harddrive most likely contains your personal data, which you cannot retrieve or remove after it fails. Once you send it to repair, they may give you a different refurbished harddrive first. After fixing your defected harddrive, they may send it to a different customer. Although every used hardrive will be wiped, it is still possible to retrieve the data unless the harddrive is wiped for 35 times (Industry standard is 7 times). In my opinion, get a better brand. If it fails, don't return or repair it unless you don't care your data security.

I am not sure why so many reviewer's complain about noise or product failure but neither has been my experience. I have three drobo four bay raid devices and each contains four seagate 2 Terabit Hard Drives. I have been using some of the drives for over two years without a single drive failure. As for the noise, as I said, I am running twelve drives in three mac computers all operating at the same time and the noise level is a non issue. Perhaps it is the drobo enclosure that provides the wisper quiet sound but regardless I find no objectional noise. The five year limited warranty is far above the three year you get with other nationally recognized brands. The price is far below the box store prices. If you are in the market for a large capacity drive at this point with the technology this is a real steal. In time, the 3 Tb drives will gain the market share but their price per bit is still far above the 2TB drives. If you own a 4 bay drobo (as I do) you will be glad to know that in March of this year the company is providing a firmware upgrade to allow the 2.5 and 3.0 Tb drives to work.

I purchased a Seagate Barracuda LP 2TB drive (ST32000542AS) as a bare drive to replace a failed (2-year old) OEM Seagate drive in my HP EX 487 MediaSmart Server . The drive arrived very well packaged from Amazon, and it was a very simple operation to swap it into the HP server drive sled and plug it in. The "restore" operation was a bit slow (especially over a wireless connection), but I was delighted to find that we had lost NO data (due to drive mirroring). I would heartily recommend this very-large-capacity drive to other MediaSmart Server users as a simple plug-and-play upgrade. Think about it: 2TB of storage for under $100... and if you're not replacing a failed disk, this can go straight into an open bay for full mirroring of your digital data and memories. Great deal for some peace of mind.

We wanted to replace our old four servers with a new and very fast machine, so we bought different parts in order to build a system custom built by ourselves. This disks are way silent than the previous generation, a little more reliable and quite less power consuming than 7200rpm disks. We bought 18, two arrays of 8 disks plus 2 spare disks. That system contains all our services: general accounting, general payments, payroll, etc., all the financial stuff; plus file server, and the most important, several centralized databases that are heavily requested from our customers and our own engineers. All is smooth, we only have performed scheduled maintenance, and no problems after several months of uninterrupted operation, at a fraction of the price that local dealer charged us. We were a little concerned that 5900rpm disks would perform much slowly than 7200, but we could take it, since there were no 2GB 7200 disks at the time we bought these. Well, performance stays well over our own expectations, is more than enough for all our needs (we are 130 users, about 100 of them engineers, and more than 30 outside users, our customers). Is not a server grade disks, but it's cheap and more than enough reliable for us.Ah!, Seagate does not say this, but I can confirm that these disks are absolutely hot-swap capable when used with the proper caddy.Totally recommended.

I thought all seagate drives came with a five year warranty, but it turns out you can buy cheap ones or more expensive ones and effectively prepay for the warranty. I use a lot of drives and generally have drives last in the 5 year range, and so I often return drives within the 5 year warranty period, so these drives (that came with a 3 year warranty, 6 months already expired) were not acceptable to me, and I returned them and paid $30 more to get drives with a 5 year warranty.I'm still a Seagate fan (the 2TB problem they had for a while seems to be gone), but I just check the warranties more carefully now.

I'm a frequent buyer at Amazon. Though I bought more than 100 items from Amazon, this is just my 2nd review. My first review was for my MacBook Pro sleeve. And, here is my 2nd review.I wrote my first review because I just loved it that I thought I should support the product. Now, in this case, the disappointment-to-the-core caused me to write this really-bad review for Seagate. I mentioned this so that you can understand how utterly disappointed I was with these Seagate hard drives.I bought 2 of these hard drives for my Synology DS410. And, with in one month of usage, the first drive broke. It was completely unusable and I lost all of my precious data [some of my fine collection gathered over more than a decade] stored in it. I'm still cursing Seagate for this.I was planning to set up a remote backup for my NAS knowing that any hard drive will not survive for long. But, I didnt expect that it would happen in less than a month and that too from someone called "Seagate".I returned both my drives back to Amazon and planning to go with Hitachi this time. I hope Hitachi doesn't disappoint me.I DO NOT RECOMMENT THESE HARD DRIVES AT ANY COST. TO THAT POINT, ANY PRODUCT FROM SEAGATE.

I bought 4 of these during the black Friday sale 70usd a piece. A little research before buying suggested a firmware upgrade would fix the Click of death problem that many people complained about. Its been a month but the Click still happens even though I updated the firmware but only on spin up. Read and write speeds are no where near what I expected it to be in a 0+1 RAID setup. Spin-up takes forever. I made the mistake of installing Warcraft 3 on that RAID setup and I could not host an online game (everyone would say I lagged out). I did try a RAID 5 before going doing 0+1 and it would constantly drop one of the 4 drives. What these drives do, they do well and that is provide cheap and plentiful storage. If you are buying them for something else, they will fail miserably. I don't think anyone has gotten RAID 5 working with these drives other than a pure software mode such as inside Windows server or Linux. 2TB of storage is plenty to loose so at least run a RAID 1 since these are so cheap.

I've been using Seagate hard drives for the past 15 years, and have generally had very good luck with them. I am currently using a Seagate 80GB drive that is over five years old, and it still functions flawlessly.I was in need of more storage, and a 2TB drive certainly fits the bill. Despite some of the horror stories I've read about this particular drive, I was eager to try it for myself. Here is what I can tell you from my experiences thus far:PROS:- Relatively quiet; it's not silent, but it isn't any louder than my other hard drives;- Runs three to four degrees cooler than my other hard drives;- Enormous amount of storage space at a very good price;- Performance isn't dramatically different than my 7200 RPM drives.CONS:- I've already begun to occasionally hear the ominous sound known as the "click of death." The drive diagnostic software (S.M.A.R.T.) doesn't reveal any problems, but I will be testing it frequently to see if anything crops up.- Amazon went way too far in their efforts to make the packaging "frustration-free." My drive arrived in a large box with only three small air pillows for protection, and all three air pillows were deflated! In other words, the drive had no protection whatsoever. If you are seriously interested in buying one of these drives, you may wish to search Amazon and see if there is a regular (non-frustration-free) version that you can buy. I'd rather deal with some packaging frustration than end up with a drive that was destroyed in transit. The vast majority of hard drives perform very well when they're brand new, but reliability/longevity is something that takes time to determine. I will update this review as time goes by, to let you know how the drive is doing.- - -Update, February 21, 2010: After a week of light usage, the infamous "click of death" sounds have become more frequent, and some of the files on the drive seem to have become corrupt. Not a good sign. I'll update the review again if things get worse.- - -Update, March 9, 2010: The "click of death" noises are continuing to increase in frequency. At this point, I don't dare to use the drive for anything important.

I bought 6 total of these drives. Within the first 30 days one drive failed with SMART errors. This was no problem for me since I was using it in a RAID 6 volume. Amazon was great at sending me out a new drive in 2 days. I have since re-optimized my RAID array and no more SMART errors for now. I had never had a drive fail so quickly, and I was fortunate to have a method to recover the failed drive. 2TB is a lot to lose if a total data failure occurs. Overall, I would still buy again. One bad drive out of six is not too bad, and who's to say maybe the drive sustained damage in shipping. I give the benefit of the doubt to Seagate and Amazon on this one.

I purchased a couple of these drives to replace lower capacity SATA-2 drives in my system. I am using them in a softRAID 0+1 array, and I have had some challenges with my add-on SATA RAID controller failing to maintain connection with the drives. I have found the performance and thermal profile quite reasonable for 5900 RPM drives. The cache performs well for small to medium files, and the write configuration is outstanding in both the striped and mirrored configurations. The drives are a little noisier than I had hoped, but no worse than typical. Overall, I find these drives to provide good capacity and performance at an excellent price. I would not recommend if the primary intended usage is Swap disk, CAD usage or DVD playback, but for any other usage, I think they are more than adequate.

The Seagate Barracuda Model ST32000542AS LP SATA 3 GB/s 2TB Hard Drive bare drive reviewed here seemed to be an excellent choice as it had low initial cost per GB for 2TB HDD size... But it depends on the reliability of this drive...Here are my experiences...When I first installed the drive in my Dell XPS Desktop it worked like a champ for 24hrs and I wrote the review promptly and shared my opinions on Amazon and at that time I did not hear any clicking noises as everyone seems to be complaining about, I thought I must be the lucky one!, But, I was wrong! Now ever so often I hear a loud "CLICK" and the access to the drive pauses for a while and continues thereafter. Looks that it is just matter of time when the drive will fail eventually. IMHO, Dell XPS desktops have very good BTX cabinet with good cooling and good power supplies, I doubt power supply is an issue as I have not overloaded it. The Seagate HDD Application tool currently does not find any defect with the drive. The drive runs cool but clicks at random and during that time the access to the drive is hampered, the application freezes for fraction of second and resumes, I feel it could be some thermal re-calibration issue in the drive or Firmware bug in this model?I checked Seagate website but did not find any new firmware posted for this model of drive. Hopefully you guys do more research than I did when I bought one of these with my NAS. I chose it because of its low power consumption...it's the lowest, 0 watts because it died after a couple of months. After reading online I found out that these Seagates are plagued by the "click of death" problem where some critical sectors can't load. If the heads that contain the firmware info can't be loaded, the HDD is bricked -- no recovery options, no reformat ability, ship it back to Seagate and hope you had your important data elsewhere (on a non-Seagate drive). My NAS performs SMART checks every week to determine HDD health and emails me the results. I was using this one night, and it was dead the next morning. No problem in the SMART checks; they conveniently can't catch the click of death before OR after it happened. This is garbage; you get a 3-year warranty and some people have worse experiences than I do. I'll swallow the higher power consumption and stick with a Hitachi. Google "Seagate LP click of death" and find out for yourself...

I bought two of these for my 2nd gen Drobo after one of the 750GB drives in my system failed. I tried to install the first drive, but it was not recognized by the Drobo. This necessitated a reboot of the Drobo (and the server attached to it via Firewire, for good measure), at which time the new drive was recognized. After the rebuild with the first new drive was complete, I replaced a second, functional, 750GB drive with my second 2TB Barracuda; the Drobo recognized the drive immediately, without a reboot, this time.If you are using these drives in a Drobo that has never had drives of this capacity in them before, you too may have to reboot your Drobo in order to get the new drive recognized. Both of these new drives have been working in the system for over a month now, and have performed without issue. I have not noticed any abnormally loud sound levels from these drives, but it should be noted that the ambient sound level in my study is slightly higher than normal home office environments. These drives are also running 6-10° F cooler than the older 750GB Seagate Barracudas in the same Drobo.

I'm using some of these drives in a ReadyNas Duo. For some reason they are still shipping drives with CC34 firmware. Recommendation is to upgrade to CC35 to deal with some reliability and noise (clicking) issues. So I try to update to CC35 using Seatools but that doesn't work because for some reason the serial numbers don't match the list of upgradeable drives. Turns out it's a well known problem and there are ways around it (just Google). So the drives seem to work fine but one of them is clicking all the of the time. Amazon is good enough to replace it for me but the new drive takes the NAS out of commission (and yes it shipped with CC34 firmware). An unreliable drive is a nightmare - you can't trust your data to it and in the event it needs to be returned you need to spend anywhere from 9 hours to 3 days (yes I'm not kidding) wiping a drive so that you can safely return it.Just say no to Seagate.

I've owned about two dozen Seagate drives in the past decade, a few from the Barracuda line, and have had zero problem with them. (The pair of workhorse drives in my Dell desktop are still working strong!)The Barracuda LP is a line of low-power 3.5-inch drives spinning at the odd speed of 5,900RPM, which is 8.5% more than a 5,400RPM drive but still 18% slower than a 7,200RPM desktop drive. This 2TB model makes for the lower speed vis-a-vis 7,200RPM drives by including a 32MB cache, which really helps with sequential reads and writes, as evidenced when I transfer large files. When transfering small files and deleting files in Vista, this really underperforms a 7,200RPM drive that has 16MB of cache (no surprise there) but is noticeably faster than a 5,400RPM drive with 32MB of cache. The low power feature means this drive is best either as a secondary drive inside your desktop chassis, or in an external enclosure. The drive's interface is SATA 3Gb/s, or 300MB/s (due to encoding, 10 bits, not 8, make up 1 byte in a hard drive). So you can use an enclosure that supports USB, eSata or Firewire ports and maximize the throughput. Previously I had an old 250GB Seagate in my cheapo enclosure from a now-defunct company and it always became really hot after just 5 minutes of use; with the LP drive, it always stays cool, attesting to the importance of low power, even at the slight sacrifice of speed. One thing I didn't like about the drive packaging is it didn't come with a cable, which would have cost Seagate a few cents to make in China but would have saved the customer some hassle. But then, I got the drive free from Amazon's Vine program, so maybe the regular retail version comes with a cable.I don't work for Seagate or its affiliates. I've always trusted my Seagate drives and they've never let me down. I find it interesting so many people trash an iconic American company like Seagate. Maybe it's a sign of the times, when just about everyone dislikes America.
