It is a royal PIB to destroy the data for end of life disposal!I do NOT want my bank information etc. to be sold at a flea market in Nigeria!There needs to be some FOOLPROOF way to destroy ALL of the data on the HDD AFTER a total failure!

Update: I wrote this review before a firmware update was made available and my comments reflect the situation at the time. When the updates were made available, I flashed my 5 drives and they've been working fine ever since. I'd change the rating to a 4 star if the editor allowed.I and many others have been experiencing serious problems with these drives including:* dropping out of RAID configurations for no apparent reason* being ejected from a RAID configuration due to read / write errors* freezing for up to 30 secondsThese problems have been reported on Linux, Vista, XP, and OS X and appear to be related to how the drives flush their write cache. In many cases, the drives work fine for days or weeks before problems appear. In my case, I bought five of these for my Qnap TS-509 Pro and they worked great for about two weeks under various read / write loads. Since then, I've had all three of the problems mentioned above on different drives and they are growing progressively worse. The latest problem was three of the five drives disappearing from the RAID5 volume while I was attempting to copy the files to a different NAS.A work-around that has been successful for some is to disable the disk write cache. I just replaced my 2nd 1tb drive, both turned out to be the .11. I know this now b/c on the latest RMA which i'm packaging right now, the Seagate rep offered to change it to a .12 on the return. I lost a significant amount of work both times, although less the 2nd time because I was paranoid after the first. I work in an industry where large video and image files are the norm, and I can't spend a bunch of time burning files that I'm working on. i need reliability in my storage.This used to be an incredibly reliable company, and it's too bad that their large capacity stuff is so lousy. In the case of this one, the model# I bought didn't match what the drive detect program read it as, so it couldn't apply any of the downloaded firmware updates (even though drivedetect was showing it as needing one). The rep at Seagate told me I'd have to download it directly. When I did (I was doing all this b/c the drive was running too slowly to use) the drive was bricked and my OS told me I had to reformat. I'm getting rid of everything I own made by Seagate and never returning. I haven't had products this bad since Maxtor. Probably not a coincidence they bought them. Avoid at all costs unless you don't care about your data.

Good value. Be aware, however, that a low-level format of the bare drive takes about 22 hours when using a USB docking station.

At the time of writing, I have around 16 x 7200.11 drives... of which 9 are the 1.5TB ones (all of which are running the latest firmware, CC1H).The 1.5TB ones are running in RAID 6 on a quality RAID controller (3ware 9650SE-24M8) and every few weeks, one of the drives goes into DEGRADED mode.In all, I've had to send back 4 dead drives and 2 which stopped being read by the controller/BIOS.The worst part of it, is that Seagate keeps feeding me the same BS over and over about how I'm part of a small minority of its customers experiencing these issues or that I must be doing something wrong with my machines or that I'm the unluckiest guy around to have several defective drives...They don't even cover my shipment costs expecting me to continue paying for these drives.I've just about had it with Seagate... the next time I experience any of the above faults, they're either paying all shipping costs and arranging pick-up OR they're paying to replace all my drives with Western Digital equivalents OR they're gonna find themselves target of a lawsuit.

Seagate is known for their Barracuda hard drives. Currently, this is the only manufacturer I would buy a drive from since several La Cie drives failed because of faulty enclosures. After I had taken out 3-4 drives out of their enclosures and trashed them (still have the drives) another La Cie drive starting acting up so I took it out of it's enclosure and discovered it was the power connector to the circuit board, it was not making contact for some reason so it kept powering off and on, I fixed it so the connectors were always in contact and the drive now works perfectly, no power issues. I never had this problem with Seagate drives and because of this they are my brand for now on. I'm a film maker and artist and can't afford to lose any data.

It crashed on me with numerous bad sectors after several years of service. Good thing I have back-ups for back-ups which back-up just in case thing like this happens.

I own my own Tech company and have worked in major DataCenters throughout the world. Not a single Mainframe, reputable server, or enterprise desktop, uses any other HDD other than Seagate. Period. Seagate invented the Floppy disk. Invented first HDD to fit in the FDD 3.5" form, first to introduce 5400rpm, 7200rpm, 10K, 15K, and so on. I have never had a Seagate HDD crash on me, EVER. One customer though had one that had died, it was a 10GB HDD from 1990. Also WD suck. They always crash. Also Seagate are the only drives that have Shock Protection.The people who rate this product negatively are obviously ID10T's. If you buy a 1TB HDD the r/w time is going to lag, read the specs on the manufacturers website. Please do not complain about something you should have investigated beforehand.Bigger Drive = slower speed.I have one of these HDD's and I only use it as a Secondary Backup Drive.You want speed go with SCSI.

I bought two new Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1.5 TB - SATA-300 on October 13 2009, they shipped with the CC1H firmware. They worked fine under Windows 7, but about 30 days later I started to hear the click,click,click then the computer would lockup with Event Log errors that hard drive timed out. I ran SeaTools for DOS (boot cd-rom) which found 6 errors and fixed them. About 10 days later the computer froze again, upon reboot it wouldn't boot. SeaTools for DOS said the drive was not responding to any commands. I called Seagate Support was said there were no known problems with this drive and sent me over to Warranty Support where I paid $19 dollars to get another drive shipped so I can re-build my PC. Google search for Barracude 1.5TB freezing has a lot of hits.

When I plugged this drive into my PC, the BIOS and XP reported the drive contained only 32MB instead of 1TB. After trying a few things, I burned a bootable CD with MHDD on it. This utility reported the drive had 1TB. I used the CONFIG and FDISK commands of MHDD to reset the drive information. After that, my BIOS and XP reported the drive contained 1TB. It works well.I'm giving the item 4 stars because of the need to reset the disk info to 1TB and because Amazon's packing was terrible for a disk drive.

I needed a new drive for my laptop,so I went to Amazon. Unfortunately their website has some problems. I searched for Laptop/notebook drives and this product came up in the results(not sure why). So when I saw a Seagate Barracuda 500 gig in the results I was thrilled. I'd never seen a Barracuda drive for a laptop before(I used to work at Seagate Labs in development). So I was excited because I know the reliability and performance of the Barracuda drive. Its a shame I couldn't use this drive. It's an even bigger shame that Amazons' web site is not able to tell the difference between laptop and desktop and that Amazon is charging me so much for returning it that it's not worth it to do so.

I partitioned and formatted and it only came out to 1.35 terrabytes, I really do not want to go through the hassle of unscrewing the drive, unplugging, taking it out, and shipping/returning this drive back to the sender but seriously, they need to check their drives. VERY disappointing... 150 gigs is a lot to be missing when your spending over a $120.Everything else is fine on the drive though.

i bought 5 drives from 2 lots for a 4-drive raid + hot spare. first drive was courteous and failed (tick, tick..) within a week. the second one took 4 months (this week). firmware is CC1H. on the plus side, seagate's turn around is pretty quick.i wouldn't dream of using one of these drives w/o redundancy.edit: oops.. just lost one of the replacement drives 1/9.3 from the other lot continue to chug along happily, tho, so could be a bad lot. but truly does show you should buy from several sources.

added a second hd for my sons computer so we could install some of the games he received as gifts.this is perfect for extra storage. using it under win xp- after a simple format- it was ready to roll- works just fine- not noisy.It appears they use a special packaging to hold the hard drive in place in the box. good idea.remember when you buy oem hard drives- you do not get the little screws to hold them in place-also have a spare sata cable on hand for the install.

I purchased this drive with the intention of upgrading Win XP to Windows 7. I connected this drive to my hardware as a primary drive and removed all unnecessary peripherals and drives from my system. When I attempted to install Windows XP, I received a STOP 0X0000007B blue screen error. I reseated the drive several times, checked BIOS, etc., but still received the error. I then slaved the drive to my original Win XP HDD, however, Windows could not see the drive at all. After contacting Seagate, they determined that the drive was faulty.I'm therefore returning the drive to Amazon for a refund. I'm very disappointed with my experience with this drive.

I bought two of these 7200.11 model drives in October 2009. One failed immediately and I got a replacement. Over the next month the click-click-click of death began and the drives began to fail.They say that there is a firmware update that fixes this, but in my case it either wasn't applied, or there is more of a problem than they think.Now, the vendor was not Amazon -- it was Fry's and maybe the batches are different -- but I still won't touch the Seagate 7200.11 line for any amount of "savings." YMMV.

Quiet, fast, low energy consumption. Purchased one 7200.12 at a local retailer for use in an Apple Mac Dual 1.8GHz PowerPC G5 as an upgrade for my 7200.7 160 GB Seagate media drive. So pleased with it I purchased a second from Amazon to swap out my boot drive too. Had good luck with Seagate and Western Digital drives so I stick to what has worked for me.

Just read all the other 1 star reviews here and on other sites (rhymes with "egg"). As everybody has written, there is a serious problem with these drives. Besides the DOE and early failures the most reported problem is the freezing. I bought 3 of these for my HTPC and whenever I play anything (VIDEO_TS, mkv, avi, divx...) I consistently get after 3-5 minutes freezing for about 1-2 minutes. It is very annoying in a HTPC but in a RAID this spells disaster. The worst part of this is that Seagate is doing the "head in the sand" tech support. This reminds me of the Intel P4 math error when Intel initially stated that it wasn't a problem, then that it was not a big deal and then finally replaced all those faulty CPU's.Apparently nobody at Seagate has the guts and brains to come forward and call a spade a spade.Nobody should buy any more Seagate drives until they post a fix on the main product page or the main tech support page. I went to the Seagate forums and there are many messages of people calling and emailing and just being ignored for weeks. There are even firmware updates on bittorrent (WTF?). What kind of company deserts their customers to the point that they have to search on torrents for a solution???I just hope that a big Class-Action law firm will loose their data with these drives and take them to the cleaners. Any company that has this much disdain for their customers should be severely punished. At least the CTO and the responsible persons for tech support and customer service should be fired.Maybe an internet-wide Seagate boycott will wake them up!

I ordered four of these for my Qnap TS-410 a month ago, and none of them have yet crashed, so I am satisfied :-) When it comes to performance I do not think that I would see any difference between another good brand in this class and the Seagate Barracudas, and price is about the same.QNAP TS-410 4-Bay Desktop Network Attached Storage

The drive got here in a couple of days. I installed the Seagate Barracuda 7200 500 GB drive in minutes, after which I loaded an older version of XP. After loading the updates, anti-virus, and networking, the drive boots up fast, performs extremely well, and is more than I expected.

I ordered 2 of the 1TB drives and created a RAID 1 array in my PC. Day 2 after installing, the drive in port 0, failed. I RMA'ed the drive back to Amazon, and they quickly shipped me a new one. I received the replacement, installed, and the RAID array rebuilt. Then, 3 days later, the 2nd drive, the drive in port 1, failed. I'm RMA'ing back this drive to Amazon. Hopefully, I'll have better luck with the new drives. Anyway, there are some serious quality control issues with Seagate. I've never had problems like this with their drives before.The drives, when working, are great. Fast and quiet. However, just don't rely too heavily on the drives. Be sure to backup your important stuff in multiple places.

I purchased this drive on Amazon and used it in an HP MediaSmart EX470 Windows Home Server to increase storage. While playing video from the server the video stream would start to stutter and freeze. I spent 2 months troubleshooting through a strict process of elimination, ruling out the Client PCs, the managed gigabit switch, the HP Server, its software and hardware. When I read of all the problems with the 1.5tb drive I tried removing it from the server,of course everything worked flawlessly with the drive gone, returning the drive to the server the problem continued. Searching the links that the previous review had posted I found many others experiencing this problem. I tried many fo the suggestions such as disabling write cache, I updated the firmware to Brinks-4D8H-SD1B from Seagate's website unfortunately the problem has not been resolved.I chose the 1.5tb drive as the HP sever only has 4 drive bays and I wanted to maximize storage density. Little did I know I would lose nearly 100hrs of my life chasing this problem down. I don't know if Amazon will accept a return, I certainly don't want a replacement drive from Seagate. I also purchased a 1tb Western Digital Caviar Black that has performed well. My next purchase will certainly not be from Seagate.

I don't recommend buying Barracuda 11. Cheap mechanics, loud and hot, many die from firmware errors. Mine didn't came online after reflashing. Couldn't save all the data before this happened. Used Seagate hard drives for many years, now going back to Western Digital.

This drive was dead on arrival. I tested it in three machines with the same result: drive does not spin up. It emits a soft, high-pitched, pulsing whine for the first thirty seconds after the power is applied. The platters never spun, and there was no audible actuation of the drive arm.

I got my Seagate through Bing Cashback and saved a bundle, and I use it as my daily backup storage (via Retrospect) and I have been very happy. No problems whatsoever and the drive is fast and reliable. For secondary backup I also have a Western Digital drive.

I purchased 3 of these drives for a server and one after the other they have accumulated bad blocks and screwed the RAID.They were packaged adequately so I don't know what the problem was.The second disk took 1 month for Seagate to replace, which is not acceptable.

The HDD as such has been working fine. I'm using it as an external drive so do not have much data on the overall speed as such, I'm limited by USB max speed.The packaging as fine too. unlike some who weren't satisfied,the packaging in my shipment used 2 plastic gloved to keep the HDD hanging. so none of the sides were touching the box.

Generally speaking, you just can't go wrong buying a Seagate drive, and this one is no exception.Rather than jump in the fray of "OMG I GOT ONE WITH BAD FIRMWARE AND I HATE THE WORLD", I'll just let the world know how things worked out for me, because there are more than enough reviews to tell you that this is the speediest, hugest SATA drive you can buy... and that it's the worst drive ever. More likely than not, you've already decided if you're going to roll the dice, and just want to know what to expect if you order from Amazon instead of another vendor. So... here goes...I bought two of these drives from Amazon (not the third party links), and the packaging was incredible, especially for an OEM drive. A box with layers of foam protecting the drive... in another box with packing material. They totally blew NewEgg out of the water here.As far as the drive itself, they came with CC1H out of the box, so no firmware flashing was necessary. The conventional wisdom is that CC1H is the magic firmware that fixes the problems people were having with older iterations of this drive.I've been using the two drives I bought in a RAID 0 configuration on one of my Macs for nearly two weeks now, without so much as a hiccup.

I bought 2 of theese discs and both were in a bad state. I inmediately informed the seller and they offered me replacement of both pieces. It was urgent to replace them because I needed HDD for work, and I live in Costa Rica so I could't wait so much time. I had already bought two WD 640GB Black Caviar, so the seller had no problem in making me a refund. Excellent service. Thank you very much.

After a brutal introduction with faulty firmware that caused many users to hate this drive, Seagate has finally got it right and produced a firmware that allows this monster to work to its full potential. Now shipping with the most recent firmware, this is a fantastic backup drive or media storage drive. I use it in my home server as the storage location for all my media. It works great for that purpose, and with a media extender, plays all my movies (most are standard definition DVDs) flawlessly over my n-band wireless signal. I can stream to my wife's laptop, either of my TVs (via media extender) and it all works flawlessly. I don't have any issue with cache dumping. So if you are reading all the negative reviews, consider that it appears the many initial problems have been taken care of.I have some reservations about the long term quality of this dive, but for that, only time will tell. I think I will get another one and mirror it with my current drive so that if one crashes I have a backup. Seagate has a good warranty, so I'm not TOO concerned about it.Once a real nightmare because of bad firmware, now a great and reasonably priced media/back up drive, this one is a good investment assuming it stays healthy over time.

The drive seems ok now that I have It working. I went to seagate web sight for help to get the drive to work, after I installed It.I found many pages of Info on how to get this drive to work,none of It helped.I finally went to Geek Squad where I purchased computer and they had It going in less than 10 min.Next time I will pay a little more and get better support.

The first time that I ran SMART software, it showed that the drives (I bought 2) both had reallocated sectors and were failing. This was after the 30 day Amazon returns period, but I contacted them anyway, as it is clear that the drives were poorly packaged and were defective upon arrival.They stood by their 30 day policy and told me to contact the manufacturer using the contact information listed in the manual (which doesn't exist). It looks like I will be left with two very expensive door stops - thanks Amazon.

I just received this drive, and I'm very happy with it. I wouldn't call it noisy, but there are quieter drives out there, but it's a nice compromise between performance and quiet for a system drive, and the noise isn't obtrusive. The drive runs very quiet as well. Temps are right around 30C in my Antec Fusion Remote Max. The drive is in a separate compartment with the PSU, so only receives a bit a passive cooling from the PSU fan and the air that gets drawn through the vent underneath the drive. My previous drive was a Seagate 7200.9 300GB, and it was significantly louder and ran hotter (about 47-50C in the same location).Overall I'd say this is a great value drive for a mid-level system.

Failed after 800 hours of use... One minute it was fine the next it caused a blue screen failure and then all the LBA's were bad. Used every tool avail no luck. Have never had a drive fail so quickly. I'd stay away based on the 7200.11 fiasco! 7200.12 doesn't seem to be a lot better!Update: received new drive from Seagate, swapped circuit board just to see if the failure was electrical or mechanical. Turns out its a mechanical failure which in my mind makes the failure worse!

This drive is slow. I ended up using it as storage only. [...]for a good read. Seagate is not the company they used to be. This is a good 'green' drive for storage, but not for use as a primary drive IMO.

This has got to be the worst drive I've ever used. It lost my data from day 1, even with the new firmware. It's just a bad drive. Avoid it at all costs.
