I've had a Samsung SyncMaster 913v for like... gads, how old is this thing? I got it in 2005 for a custom built 'puter. It's currently on a newer machine, and we're only going to replace it because larger monitors have become so darned inexpensive anymore (relatively speaking!), and with the newer games, we're going to need higher specs. Truly a powerhouse, I'm not even aware of a single dead pixel. And yes, it's been knocked over at least a few times, and subjected to pet dust/fur. The worst trouble it's giving is that it's beginning to dim just slightly, but considering near-constant daily use for more than half a decade, that's pretty reasonable! I am planning on trying to get another Samsung monitor (or perhaps HDTV), because I'm really impressed with how well it's held out all these years!

SAMSUNG 953BW - STAND REMOVALRead the last part of this post before you begin - it might be much easier than is described here, but I did not try it. Did it the hard way. Here you will find how to take apart the base.[...]Here is how to take off the metal post that remains after removing the two plastic halves that cover it - when assembled, they make the vertical piece of the stand. If you look at the bottom of the monitor frame, you will see that the metal post is attached to a metal plate, and that this plate is attached to another metal plate that is fixed to the monitor. Nevertheless, you will notice that the post can move a little with respect to the monitor. As you will see in the picture of the rear of the monitor, in the link above: The post is held to the monitor by means of two rails, which hold the side edges of the metal plate attached to the post. And you will also see that there is a small rectangular hole in the plate, in which a retaining tab must go in to keep it from coming off.I used the large blade of a regular swiss army knife and stuck it in between the two metal plates, in the center part of the space between them, and noticed that it would come to a stop a about the edge of the rectangular hole - it must have been hitting the retaining tab. Then I hit the knife a couple of times with the heel of my hand, to see if it would go in any further, and: Bingo! It did.Drove it almost all the way in, and then pulled on the post and it slid out. That's it !LATER NOTICED: You don't even have to disassemble the vertical piece of the stand.Just bend the monitor back as far as it would go, then remove the large piece of the base, and there you will see the edges of the two metal plates mentioned in the preceding paragraph where you have to introduce the blade.BY THE WAY: my monitor failed after about a year and a half of use. First, the screen developed a grey vertical band, about two inches wide, on the right side. Afterwards, there was no image. This was the reason for needing to remove the base. It is presently being repaired by Samsung, under warranty. Will update this post, if needed.WARRANTY REPAIR: Samsung repaired monitor under warranty - I believe they probably changed the screen. It came back and worked just fine, but I did not use it for very long (tested it on March 2012). It is waiting to be used with one of our previous PCs, for someone in the family, which I still have to set up. I believe it should keep working fine.

The monitor worked for a couple of weeks and then all we got was a blank screen. We tried pushing all the buttons, but nothing happened. I contacted the seller who advised me to put in a claim with UPS. This doesn't make sense because UPS did not damage the monitor. Seller refused to do anything more about this, saying it was sold "as is".

Arrived with no bad pixels (a good start, anyway). The unmounted pedestal attaches easily, once you figure it out -- not very intuitive, though. The mounting arm is collapsed in the box; it pops to its extended position quite aggressively after you remove the locking pin (keep the pin! You'll never get this dude back inside its box without it). The menu's touch-sensitive controls are invisible in the kind of subdued lighting in which most PC monitors should be used. But most people use them in bright office or home lighting best suited for football stadiums; the controls are easier to see in such light, but proper image adjustment isn't possible. I used a penlight to spot the menu buttons while calibrating the 743BX in subdued light. The supplied CD has the monitor driver and calibration software. The software relies on the miserably poor ability of most humans to judge color accuracy and contrast levels by eye. I calibrated the 743BX with iMatch/EyeOne software, the only way to do it. Out of the box, the monitor is 400% too bright, highlights are yellow, blacks are red, colors are oversaturated, and the midtones are magenta to the point of making grays and monochrome images look purple. The color temp ranges from 5300 in flesh tones the color of Sunkist orange juice to over 8000K in the brights despite yellowy highlights. These factory-set effects appear to impress most buyers, who prefer a juiced-up and overly sharp image, and who'll accept anything that makes Aunt Tillie at least nominally recognizable in family photos, even if the offbeat colors and hot brights have her looking like Mr. Hyde in drag. After half an hour with EyeOne calibration, brightness was reset from 380 to a more natural 122. With a smoother grayscale the gamma simmered down to a close-to-spec 2.24 and a color temp of 6470. A 20-step grayscale actually displayed most of the gray bars as fairly neutral gray -- a rare feat for an LCD in this price range. Note that the RGB controls can't be used to correct the grayscale, as they appear to affect Y-level (saturation) only. The measured contrast range worked out to a decent 735:1, average for competent HDTV's. As usual, the claimed 7000:1 works only if you view this monitor turned off in a completely dark vacuum and then turn it on to its highest brightness and contrast levels. In use, text at all sizes is sharp and solid. The viewing angles are visibly wider than with older models. For an LCD the calibrated image is good enough for video or photo work if you're careful and know how to use a pixel color sampler. Oddly, I noted lots of movement noise in grainy videos (a problem with all LCD's), despite the 5ms speed. Considering that this monitor has the inherent innaccuracies common to all LCD's (it sure ain't no CRT), and that I'm about $8000 too short to buy a studio LCD for precise work, I'd say the 743BX is an excellent buy after calibration.

I purchased this product in early 2009, and was extraordinarly happy with it. I had upgraded from a 15" CRT so of course a 20.1 inch LCD was a drastic improvement. I did get a lot of compliments on the quality of the monitor as well. And then, all the sudden, about 8 months in, it started flickering a lot, and then when it would shut off, I'd have to hit power several times before it would turn on. I'm not one to complain or go through the hassle of dreaded customer services, so I toughed it out. And then, right in the middle of an important week for me--it died completely.I read about this problem being due to bad capicators and checked Samsung's warranty, and read HORROR stories about their poor customer service, and was worried about having this phantom $1000 charge on my credit card. But, I knew the monitor was in warranty, and thought it'd be worth a try to send it in, so I got on their site, registered the monitor, and put in the service request. I had a PDF of the receipt and was able to upload that, and within five minutes, I had my UPS label to send it to New Jersey, and now--a week later, I have a fixed (I'm not sure if it's MY monitor or a new/refurb yet as I haven't recieved it) it's been sent back to me. It's not too often you can say this, but the Samsung customer service experience was completely no-sweat. There were no charges to my card (They do have a disclaimer about a $55 charge if they find nothing wrong with the monitor), and actually the only thing I paid for was to have it packed at UPS (I didn't have a box it would fit in). Samsung service gets an A+ from me.Edit: As a follow up, I received a perfect new or refurbished (it wasn't specified, although it was NOT my same monitor as I had it scribed with my name) within just a few days with absolutely no charges to me.

Good enough display quality, but that can't make up for the TV function only picking up 1 channel (barely), and the speakers have never worked.Took it back to place of purchase for warranty work on the TV/speaker issue: nothing resolved; it's simply a sucky monitor. For the last year it'd been having an issue with the display randomly going to a black screen for a few minutes, then it'd pop back on; but sometimes after coming back on it would switch it's display color scheme around to neon/negative image style, shift the whole display halfway across the screen, or start scrolling the whole display across the screen. Once a message flashed on it saying "Service: DDP part". Didn't have the money to fix it(not to mention the confidence that it'd even last if I did). Today it took the big dump on me.I'm not sure how long these types of monitors are meant to last, but 5-6 years seems bad to me for a monitor; computers I can understand having to replace the major parts in ~5 years, but it seems Samsung dropped the ball with this one.Never buying Samsung again.

This monitor has a beautiful picture when it works but it's made in China so expect it to die in just a couple years. I picked up one at Goodwill for $15 that looked to be in good shape but it wouldn't turn on and the power button blinked all the time like it was in power saving mode. Upon taking it apart I found that all the capacitors in the power supply were bad which is something that also happens with motherboards, PC power supplies and other devices made in China. The capacitors are easy to replace though and it's working great again now. For some interesting reading Google "China capacitor problems" and check out badcaps dot net for photos of what they look like.

I loved this monitor when i was still using Vista x64 and the HD4870 graphics card. It took a while to have them supported but the 2.0.0 software of the included calibration device finally did. Now on Win7 x64 and HD5870, it simply refuses the monitor as it claims it's not supported (seems to think it's a different monitor). No way around this and Samsung is notoriously bad for supporting older models. So, it still works as a regular monitor, but calibration is now bricked and no way to get it back. That makes the color accuracy (the whole point for the XL series) a non-feature. I wish the software would allow to calibrate anyway, even if the current configuration is not in the list. Especially when it SHOULD work but doesn't because apparently some code is not updated!I have no confidence Samsung will step out of their shadow on this one. Support is likely to be permanently outdated.

If I have personally gleaned anything from ownership of this monitor and perusal of the reviews for it and another model, the syncmaster 204b, it would be that I am clearly less discriminating than many other users. My primary use of the monitor is for WP and other productivity related office applications and in the 18 months I've owned it I haven't noticed anything that would qualify as a significant issue or complaint with performance. I have preference for the 16:10 wide screen format and this monitor does not distort images or give any indication of stretched text. Essentially the default settings were more than acceptable however by tweaking display via my Nvidia graphics card control panel the minor concerns I had were easily rectified. While movie/Video viewing is not a high priority, I have used it for each as well as basic photo editing. For the former usages, color reproduction has been on a par with what I have experienced with Samsung LCD TVs and that's a positive statement. At its' default setting, the monitor is extremely bright but the control panel options render that a non-issue as the menu system is very intuitive. Visual acuity varies with each user but I found the monitor to be least irritating by disabling the MagicColor setting since with a few applications text looked fuzzy to me. Initially, for photo viewing via windows photo gallery, there is a sepia hue that enveloped the image but it is not duplicated with third party software applications such as Corel or Adobe. I suspect that effect could also be corrected by playing with the settings however in as much as I do not actually do anything with photo gallery it's a trivial issue for me.The minor complaints I have about the unit is from some side viewing angles the screen colors can appear washed out with brightness at higher settings, it only has up/down ergonomic adjustment and cord management can be a challenge . If you can find this monitor at a competitive price (I bought it at substantially less than what is listed here) I would not hesitate to pick it up.

I got this to use as a second monitor for my 20" aluminum iMac. Didn't have the room or need for another widescreen monitor. Fits in great. The screen's physical height is exactly the same as the iMac and the stand lets me raise it to the same level. Pixel height is 26 lines less, but it's not noticable. The monitor comes with both a VGA and DVI cable! But for the iMac I needed to get a mini DVI to DVI adaptor from Apple. $20 if you don't already have one. Also, I have another PC nearby and was able to hook it to the monitor's VGA input. There's a front panel "SOURCE" switch that easily switches between DVI and VGA. That button and the others are "touch" types and can be hard to see in the dark. Also not arranged very logically. But it's going to work out very nicely.

This is a great monitor that has clear vivid resolution in a nice wide-screen format. The only thing that would be nicer is (as mentioned by several other of these reviews) if this screen could adjust it's position, at least up and down. Or if it was designed to offer a "mount-on-the-wall" option. But the screen is superior for the price so I would still buy it again...

This is my second monitor from Samsung. These are by far the best monitors and picture quality for the money, or even money aside these are fantastic monitors. OK so they don't send a true DVI cable, they do send a vga type cable and have a dvi/svga adapter. Think about it, it is for people to upgrade their old style monitor. If you have a graphics card with the DVI already then shop on Amazon (or eBay) and find a cable for around 10-12 bucks. I don't know why people say there is no tilt or adjustment. The tilt is very stiff but you can easily tilt the screen back. Up and down adjustment is not available, but you should know that before you buy. The base is good sized and very stable. The adjustment buttons are on the bottom front edge and you just reach up under with your finger tips. They are labled on a cool looking smoked plastic decorative edge. Very easy to set up and great pre-sets (games, movies, internet etc.) that allows you to switch with the touch of a few buttons. Don't miss a great monitor at a great price.

This is a solid monitor for the money, excellent picture with no dead pixels. My only complaint would be that the LED which blinks to indicate that the monitor has gone into energy saving mode is VERY bright.Due to poor packaging, the monitor arrived with a small crack on the front of the case. Deal-Stop.com offered to replace it at no cost but since it didn't affect the operation of the monitor I chose to keep it. Overall I'm quite satisfied with the purchase.

If you are looking for a monitor that doesn't cost a lot and it is pretty good quality with a brand name you recognize: then this is the monitor I would get (obviously I already did because I am now reviewing it).The only thing that I don't like about this monitor is the lack of tilt/angle movement. It has some ability to tilt, but it is not great at all. It is also hard to tilt if you can get it to tilt at all.Otherwise, it is nice and small and takes up less room that those stone age monitors. And the blue power light is pretty (but it is annoying when your PC is off...it blinks very brightly in the dark). So if you are a light sleeper, make sure you turn off the monitor too.Great picture quality! It is also pretty simple to keep clean of dust.
