Lots of people have found this to be a very good drive, and certainly it has a good feature set for storing lots of large files.So it's a shame that Amazon can't seem to get a clue about how to pack hard drives. Like anything else, it can't be floppin' around in the box when you ship it, or it takes a whack or two or ten at every step in the shipping process. For hard drives, that's a bad thing.Unfortunately I won't be buying drives from Amazon again, as the math doesn't add up:Amazon + OEM bare drives = Dead On Arrival

Installed, loaded OS and all other software. Within 2 weeks receiveda Microsoft wIndows 7 message: Your drive is failing, procede immediatelyto back up all your files, and contact your computer manufacturer.As this is a replacement drive, the manufacturer is me.I was particularly annoyed as the original drive supplied with my HP(Seagate) had just failed.After backing up everything and re-booting, the drive seem to work wellwithout problems. So I assume that it was a fluke.I gave only 3 stars because of this problem, otherwise I would havegiven five stars. If it happens again it deserves zero stars.

This is a very good drive! It shows up as 1.81 TB left. You don't need to patch this HDD if it is dated after 2011. Mine was dated July of 2011. Patched at the factory already and no errors on my end!

I have been using this HD for about a month and it is working fine. I put it in an external HD case so I can move it around from computer to computer if necessary. Most of the time it is connected to our home network and used to back up computers, videos, and photos that are on our LaCie NAS.We have an inverter in our Mini Van so we can take the 2TB HD and laptop with us on trips and we can watch movies (~180 of them)while traveling. I set it on a pillow to protect it from road bumps. It seems to work fine.

I got this drive as a single drive for Syn...y NAS. In its intended purpose it has been great: no noise, reliable so far (after 30 days), transfer speed which can fully saturate 100Mb network (thanks to nas/drive combo).This drive is also on "approved" list and Syn-y is famous for finicky issues with non-approved drives.Overall - definitely recommend for its intended purpose. Would I get it as a desktop drive - probably not as I would go for 7200 RPM drive.

Using this drive in a ZFS RaidZ environment (3 drives), Bonnie benchmarks give me sequential reads of 193 MB/s and sequential writes of 215 MB/sec (not 4k aligned). Respectable performance for a reasonable price. I've had the drives for about two months with no problems yet.

So far, two days, WHS seems to love these disk. They are running 10-15 degrees cooler than the Maxtor 50GB they replaced. I did upgrade the Samsungs with the latest firmware first and format them on another computer. I don't know if formating the full drive was needed. It took over 23 hours per disk to do a full format.Upgrading firmware was a bit of a problem, ok I spent 12 hours, creating a DOS USB stick to flash the firmware. Don't know if it was needed in WHS config.WHS was not redistributing the data to the new new Samsungs so I removed the Maxtors to force it to put data on the Samsungs. So far, they seem to run faster and cooler.

i bought 2 of these and I've had them for a few months and i haven't had an issue.i have them hooked up to a dns-325 so my speed is not all that fast but I'm sure it would be much faster with a better nas

I bought this drive for the NAS. it was recognized in seconds, formatted in couple of hours (DLink NAS has proprietary formatting) works very quiet does not heat up, but it is a NAS - transfer speeds are not that demanding. Was considering a blueray for backup, than looked at the price for 2T drive - easy choice, who needs bluerey disc back up if you have a couple of these?

I buy Samsung drives in pairs, one in the machine and one to back up the data. I have 6 of the 2 TB drives now and 8 of the 1TB. NEVER had an issue with the drives that was hardware related. zero failures after what? two years now for the 1TB? The 2TB are not noticeably slower than the 1TB drives as the density is more on the platters. Still, buy an OCZ Vertex 2 SSD drive for booting and the marriage of the two is perfect. Ignore ALL posts about packaging and failures as it seems that drives most folks to slam a great product just because they had the luck of a bad drive (or at least they THINK they have a bad drive- be surprised what a reformat can fix when you mess up an op sys install). Anyways, enough ranting. Great drive, quiet with just a quiet ticking sound as the heads are accessing and the drives run cooler than any WD or Seagate drive. No reservations, none.

Had bought this when few reviews (dec 2010), but haven't had any problems - running non-stop for 3 months in a 510mo config,No, it is not silent, but it is quiter than the WD green 1 tb it upgraded. With the speeds that have been measured, and also avoiding the allocation issue reported for the larger WD drives, am happy with the choice. Those of you upgrading : go open source and use clonezilla for faultless SATA disc space upgrades.Now (mar 2011) price is equivalent with similar 2tb green drive from WD.

Supports "TLER" mode as set on startup by RAID controller.Works great, incredibly fast and cost effective bulk storage w/ RAID 5 or 6We've got 8 of these running in a RAID 6 array and have had 0 problems in the last month.

Love it. It is the best choice for 5900rpm drives this year. WD and Seagate let me down with DOA so many times lately. Get it under $80 if you can. It is fast, cold and I did not have any noise issues. Reliability seems to be around 70% (check reviews on other computer stores). Got 5 and only one had an issue with bad sectors from the beginning. Feel your drive with data on day one and if does not fail, you have got a keeper.

This drive came in an Iomega external case. I didn't even know this drive spun at 5400 until I read the reviews. Fast! And it's dead quiet. I can't even hear it spin up when it's turned on.I've been building and using computers for 25 years. This is the best value I have ever received from a hard drive.

Unless you are savy enough to change out your master boot drive and replace with this one while booting from CD then stay away !!Tech at Samsung was unable to get this to format after MULTIPLE attempts and recommended the only solution was the firmware update way (see link below).Pick another model and stay away[..]Returned drive ...

The upgrade literally took less than 10 minutes to remove the old HD (500GB) and install the new one. I had no issues with Time Capsule recognizing the new drive or the added space and it is very quiet as well. I couldn't be happier the cost of the upgrade or the operation of the HD.

I purchased 5 of these and put 4 of them into a RAID 10 configuration. Average speed is 170MB/sec over the entire volume. The single drive averaged about 105MB/sec. These drives are VERY fast and are equal to or faster than many of the 7200 RPM versions currently available. The good news is that the Samsung HD204UI drives are much cooler and require a lot less power than most other drives.Reason for purchase: a media server. I had attempted to use external USB 2.0 drives to accomplish this but file copying was slow and tedious. And I had backups of backups... My motherboard is a 4-year-old ASUS P5E WS Pro (supports SATA II) with an Intel Q6600 CPU and ICH9R RAID chip.Update 12/12/2011:I moved all 5 drives to a Synology DS1511+ box and they are very fast and working reliably.

Puchased this drive with an external enclosure for backup and it's great... quiet, relatively quick given its specs, and the warranty is good. Very satisfied so far.

I have been using these (4) drives for 3 weeks now and they have been working great in my NAS server. Before I started using them in a RAID configuration I did a firmware update from Samsung for the F4EG since I read that you there were issues with that (at least in the QNAP server). I would defiantly get these drives again. People complained that this was only a 5400rpm drive, but you will not even notice the difference if you are running a RAID configuration. Get these drives and save yourself some money.

This drive has worked great for me. Low noise and good transfer speeds make me very happy with the purchase. Don't be fooled by the low RPM, the drive does great! I use it to store edited videos and as my scratch disk. No problems with shipping either, pull the trigger and get one!

If I have "green" drive I want it to be quiet. This Samsung hard drive is not quiet. I intended to use it in an external dock on my desk for a Time Machine volume on my mac. It makes way too much noise/whine when it spins up. When writing data it is not very quiet either. I replaced it with WD Green drive. With the WD, I can't tell when it is spinning up and when it is not. It is a thing of beauty. So far so good. Comparing my Western Digital 640 GB Caviar Black SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache to this Samsung 5400rpm - the 5400 is faster:hdparm -t /dev/sdb (Samsung)/dev/sdb: Timing buffered disk reads: 394 MB in 3.01 seconds = 130.85 MB/sec/dev/sda: (WD) Timing buffered disk reads: 338 MB in 3.01 seconds = 112.29 MB/sec
