Out of the box, you get a Wii (with about 512 mb of built in storage for game saves and downloads) with one controller, a standard a/v line, and Wii sports. If you have hdtv, you'll have to buy the component cables seperately which can cost an additional 20-40 dollars depending on the brand.
The one thing Nintendo does well is making unique systems that appeals to all ages. Wii is no exception; it's small, affordable, and the primary method of control is through motion sensors. I remember when my parents bought me a NES console back in the 80s and I remember the most unique thing I have ever seen would be the light gun. I thought it was so awesome and thus far no other system has given me that much excitement until the Wii came about.
I am surprised about the motion sensor. It's very well. The included game, Wii Sports, include a verity of games that you can play. The one that stands out to me would be the boxing. It's quite amazing to see your character bounce around on screen responding to your motion. It's quite fun, and exciting. The best way to describe it would be to stand in front of a mirror and pretend to box with yourself.
The only problem with the Wii sensor is that it doesn't seem to respond to how hard you hit and it doesn't exactly know if you are in fact doing the motion correctly or not. So basically, you could be sitting down on your couch and just doing some weird lazy motion and the game will work. I don't know why people would do this though.
If you buy a Wii, I highly recommend making a lot of room for movement. It's quite fun to play tennis and running back and fort in front of your TV.
The built in 512 mb is a lot of space for people who do not go online. I have purchased about five games in total, and the space is quite useful for just saving games. I don't go online with the console, but I would imagine that if you did, you would probably want to purchase a 2 gig memory card with your Wii which can cost about 20-30 dollars extra.
The up coming game library sounds wonderful. I won't get into games, since this review is mainly about the Wii console. However, I found I like games like Mario Galaxy, Super Swing Golf 2, MLB Power Pro, Smash Bro, Zelda, and countless others. A very good set of library to play with and there are a few Mature rated games on the system as well for those looking to play M-rated games.
For those with Gamecube games, fear not. Wii is 100% backwards compatible. All you need to keep is your controller, memory cards, and of course, games. You can pretty much play any game from Gamecube on your Wii. I have a small collection of Resident Evil, Zelda, and a few other titles from my Gamecube. They all play without a hiccup on the Wii. If you have a third party controller or memory card, it may not work on your Wii.
Overall, I am pleased with Wii. I am a bit surprised that it's hard to find, though. I went to my local game store, asked for one, and they pulled it right out brand new, in the box sealed. If you plan to buy this product, what I heard is that you should go to your local game store every Friday around noon to see if you can get one. I know it's quite hard to find and that it's beyond the control of Nintendo, but I hope people don't pay too much for the console.

The best part is playing Wii Sports. I love all the sports and I think Golf and Tennis are my favorites. I am getting pretty good at bowling, too, 213 is my highest score so far, but I keep improving. I have to say that I work up a sweat playing the games. It is good to have one hour out of the day that I am not watching TV. I love moving around and playing the games.
I also purchased Wii Fit Plus, which is GREAT. It keeps track of my BMI, weight, Wii Fit age, and I can add activity points for the other things I do, like my morning walk or sometimes I swim, so I get credit for those activities. I can say that my balance was way off at the beginning and I am 25 days into it and my balance is improving.
My weight loss efforts are complimented by Wii Sports and Wii Fit Plus. My core strength is improving, too.
