I bought one for my father he loves it. And now this one is for me, I like it very much, great camera.

This is a fantastic new offering from Nikon. You get most of the best parts of the D7000 for 1/3 cheaper. If you are looking for a starter camera or a back up body to the D7000 this is it.Here are the major differences between the D5100 and D7000.D5100Exact same sensor and processing abilities as the D7000. Some of the best Image Quality available in any DSLR. ISO 3200 is very usable with low noise.- Swivel screen while the D7000 is fixed -- Since the contrast autofocus (ie Live View) is not very good on either of these cameras this is not really a player unless you are using a tripod. Then the swivel screen is very useful.- 4 fps vs 6 fps for D7000 - No big deal 4 fps is plenty fast to fill your card with similar looking pictures. Also, in RAW D7000 buffers out pretty fast and then slows down anyway.- 11 focus points vs 39 for D7000 - Most of the time not really a big deal. Sometimes all those extra points get in the way and slow you down.No internal auto focus motor while the D7000 has one -- If you don't have any D series or older lenses this is not an issue. If you do, they will not autofocus on this camera.- Only one SD slot vs 2 for the D7000 -- A big difference when getting paid to shoot. Otherwise, always format your cards in your camera and not on the computer. Doing that I have never had a failure. (Jinxed myself now)Not weather sealed vs D7000 partially weather sealed - Don't drop either one in the water and keep both out of dust.- Has less external switches than the D7000 - This means you need to go to the menus more often which slows things down. This can be severely annoying or not depending on your shooting style. The D7000 handles better but this is not a deal breaker on the D5100.Built in flash is not a commander for Nikon Creative Light System while D7000 is -- If you don't use off camera flash or you use radio triggers this is not a big deal.1.2 lbs vs 1.7 lbs for D7000.Overall the D5100 is a great camera. Has the perfect quality picture and easy to understand interface. But would have loved if the grip for cam would be a little bigger .

I've had this camera for almost a year. No problems what so ever. The picture quality is great however there is a bit of a learning curve at the beginning. I purchased the Nikon D5100 because it takes HD video at 1080i. I will say this the video does come out a bit choppy from time to time. Another reason for this purchase was to take quality pictures of my baby girl who is almost 1 year old. If you are looking for a solid camera that is not to expensive buy with confidence. One thing to point out I only purchased the body not the lens that came with it. Currently I have a Nikkor AF-S 50mm 1:1.4G mm for portraits which takes awesome pictures and a Nikkor AF-S 18-200mm 1:3.5-5.6G II ED telephoto lens which I use 80% of the time plus the SB700 flash. Trust me the flash makes a huge difference.

Love the camera, ease of use with awesome HD vid, great pic, and light weight. Excellent camera once again... thanks Nikon!!!

After seeing some beautiful HDR photos, I was inspired to start taking photos for myself. I settled on the Nikon D5100 and have enjoyed the experience so far. Never having used a dSLR, the first thing one notices is, "Wow. These photos are great! You mean, I can actually take a photo in this dark room and not have it blown out with harsh camera mounted flash?! This is awesome!" :)One of the things that I like about the D5100 that I did not think I would is the articulating LCD screen. I didn't think I'd need it, thought it would be in the way, and thought I'd want those buttons on the left hand side of the screen more than the ability to move the screen around. I have used this feature many, many times and have gotten some good photos because of it. It works well to frame shots when the camera is low to the ground or in an otherwise hard area to put your eye to the viewfinder. Also, if you're out in the bright sun, you can angle the screen so you can actually see what's on it instead of sun glare.What pushed me over the edge in getting the D5100 over the D3100 is the availability of the wireless remote. With the D3100, you need to get the cable remote. The wireless remote works with the D5100 from both the front and back of the camera. There were other points; MP, fps, etc.; but the remote pushed me over the top.The camera has many features I am still learning to use and enjoy. If this is also your first dSLR experience, I recommend reading up on photography on the web and taking a beginning photography course. Knowing what f-stop, shutter speed, exposure value, depth of field, ISO, mean and how you use them to take great photos is the first step in taking the camera off automatic and in to manual mode. It's not that hard, and with a fun camera like the D5100, you'll be going from snapshots to photographs in no time.

Beautiful camera that gives wonderful detailed photographs, far more detail than the typical consumer level camera. This camera has the same sensor and processor as it's big brother the D7000. I strongly recommend this if you want your photography to go to a "next level" but without the serious cost of a full frame Nikon.

I bought the camera recently here on amazon, on sale. The price online was cheaper than in the electronics stores. And I paid no tax and shipping was cheap. I just got back from the aquarium here in Chicago and took some amazing shots. I'm not a pro. I typically use my Nikon D60 for everything. I got the D5100 for the video feature, but after using it, it proved to do do much more. The filter effects are nice, but again my primary focus was video. I recommend this camera highly, although I didn't use the standard lens it came with. I use the 50mm lens. I can't say enough about the photo quality. The colors were rich and the images are crisp. If I can find out how, I'll post pics so you can see what I mean. For me it was a great buy!

easy to use, easy to learn, versatile, simple, a good starter camera my primary but i will buy another d3200 as a backup

Of course yeah? lots of subtle changes that suited me. How things worked and where buttons were placed. I had a 5000 and this is a big improvement I think

Bought this camera about 8 months ago from Costco. Ive used this camera heavily. Its been through alot, and hasnt failed me yet. Turns on SUPER QUICK. Great for, well anything. Very easy to use, The camera's menu setup is great. Its a nikon product so it has hundreds of different lenses and add-ons for this, so you cant go wrong. The brand has been around forever so thats also a plus. The camera has the capability for gps yet you have to buy a 300 dollar add-on, and i like that. Gps in camera's makes no sense to me, drains battery, adds bulk, and for what, so people know where to take good pictures? Anyways, this is a great product, flash is very powerful, lcd flip out is sturdy, and it feels great in my hands.

I love it. I found a camera thas has all I need. It is simple to operate, take very good prothos and have more specifications than i expect.

This camera is just fantastic. I paired it with an 18-200mm lens, and while traveling through Alaska, it was great. It is much lighter than previous generations. My favorite feature, however, has to be the flip-out screen. While it is not needed 90% of the time, the 10% of the time that I use it, it allows me to get shots I couldn't otherwise get. Although the reviews say it doesn't handle as well as the D3100, which is true, it still handles very well, and feels at home with either my huge 18-200mm lens, or my small 18-55 lens (upgraded from the 18-55, but I still have it if I want a smaller lens or better macro).

I had a lot of fun with it!It is my first DSLR, simple to handle, many pre-set modes for beginners.light weight for girls as well.

This is my first DSLR and i purchased Brand New Nikon D5100 along with Nikon 55-200mm Lens and 50mm 1.8g Lens. The pictures come out amazing. This camera is a must have for the beginners ! Can't go wrong..Five Star.

I'm just a weekend/vacation (at best) photographer. I don't need overly complex. I don't want too simple. So, the D5100 with much of what makes the D7000 such a stunning performer, but with less fuss over settings, is absolutely perfect for me. I did buy the kit and I had gotten the 55-200 MV VR lense with the D3100. While the lense is certainly up to most challenges, I will at some point upgrade to better glass as I've always believed nothing can be better than the weakest link. Still, the pictures these lenses are producing are simply stunning.HDR is good. It's not quite as significant as the manual suggests (you have to push exposure over and under to get maximum results), but I didn't buy the camera for HDR to begin with. I'm also not a big videographer, but have taken a few videos and was pleasantly surprised at the quality. Autofocus works a bit slow in lower light, but in bright light, my videos were nice and in-focus. I did buy a really good Sandisk 16 GB Class 10 card, so I suspect it helps as well.Setting up the camera is simple and straight forward. I didn't even have to read the manual in much detail, except to get a few refence points. I do recommend downloading the fuller PDF user guide suppled with the camera, as it provides more information than the book in the box.

Purchased the D5100 two days ago to replace a D5000. The many improvements over the D5000 are great. The greatest is the video improvements. 1080p and one button recording makes this camera as good as my hard drive camcorder. Using a remote control is also easier than the D5000. The only issue I have with the camera is the shutter sound. Even in quite mode, it isn't that quite.

I'm so glad that I purchased this camera! It's wonderful. It's a wonderful camera and I would recommend anyone purchasing the Nikon D5100. :)

I currently own a D5000. I have owned the previous D40x, D60 and like photography. I got the D5100 expecting a decent upgrade. Unfortunately I was kind of disappointed when comparing it with my D5000. The D5100 feels more amateur than the D5000 does. It is smaller (almost too small) and difficult to grab if you have a 18-200 as I do. In addition, the d5100 does not offer the possibility to customize the lcd display (for manual and auto modes) as the D5000 does, this bugged me because that is an easy way to notice in which mode I am shooting. Another downgrade of the D5100 is the lack of the grid in the viewfinder. The viewfinder seems oriented to those who have a point and shot and want to upgrade. It is clear that Nikon here is aiming to those who shoot using the lcd display and not to those using the viewfinder. That, for me, is a big loss compared with my D5000, I do a lot of architecture photography and the grid is very helpful; it also helps me to keep the horizon when shooting landscapes, the lake or the ocean.I returned the D5100 after comparing it hand to hand with the D5000. Not enough of an upgrade for me and not worth the expense. The D5100 is cute, small and might work well for those who want to try a dslr for the very first time. I guess I am just going to wait for the next model or save up some money to reach the D7000.

PROs: The image quality of the D5100 is fantastic, and the flip out screen is quite nice.CONs: The ergonomics make this camera difficult to hold and the button layout is just OK, and Nikon has crippled the manual controls over video, making it extremely difficult, if not impossible to control. This is very unfortunate as Canon allows full manual control of video and as I understand it, the soon-to-be-released Nikon D3200 will have full manual control for video. It's not that Nikon couldn't give us full manual control, it's that Nikon chose not to. I wish a firmware update would fix this issue, but considering the absolutely lousy service I have received lately from Nikon, I doubt the company will provide a firmware fix because Nikon does not seem to care about it's customers.

Its a brand new Nikon D5100 SLR camera....i got it last week...its as amazing picture quality and this is my first SLR camera...i have a conflict in buying Canon DSLR ...but finally i chose Nikon DSLR and i had the best one....

I bought this from KEH as a factory-refurb and it was as if it was brand spanking new! New box, new cables, new battery, new strap, new booklet and the body was PERFECT, as described by the seller. I charged the battery overnight and began shooting the next day and haven't stopped. With my Nikon lens, it is working just great and I recommend the D5100 before I'd spend $2,000 or more on a "pro" model that won't shoot any better quality photos than the D5100. I own a D80 also and both are plenty of megapixels to achieve great photo quality.

+++Pros+++This camera is great for beginner to intermediate photographers. You will not regret buying this camera. From day one, I have been constantly reminded of just how good it is from the quality of the pictures/videos, to all of its many advanced features. It is very easy to use, and the more advanced features are intuitive and easily learned. Don't waste your money on higher/lower priced DSLR's. This one is just about perfect, and quite a bargain too!---Cons---It is not weatherproofed, so be ready to get out of the rain/snow.Seriously, that's my only complaint.
