Excellent, beautiful and perfect product! not too big, not too small, a perfect balance between pro and rookie photo machines

This is my fourth Nikon DSLR body, so there is a big comfort factor for me with compatibility for Nikon flash, Nikon lenses, and user interface protocols. Image quality is slightly but noticeably better than the D5000. I've had it for two weeks, and have been enjoying the effects options and high ISO performance. No-brainer snapshots are readily accessible in AUTO mode, and low light performance is quite good with the 35mm f1.8 lens. For the price, this is outstanding.

Once I received a camera that wasn't faulty, I was happy! (The first one had to be returned as the menu settings did not work).I upgraded from a D40 and like all the extra features this camera has.

To be fair, after two weeks playing with it and now comparing it to a newly arrived D7000, I have to say that for non-technical shooting and general snap-shots, this is a nice little camera. In most cases, its photos are indestiguishable from the D7000, and that is the bottom-line in 95% of the cases. Both cameras outperform anything Nikon has put out in the prosumer range prior to this. I loved my D90 and used it more than my D300, which I now only use for studio work, or when I might get banged-up in the field. The D7000 performs better than the D300 and it's lighter. The D5100 is still close, but with such limited options, it just isn't as versatile or adaptable as the others.I got a tongue-lashing for caring about a depth of field button, but professionals use selective focus a lot! The focus array on the D5100 seems adequate, but I found two situations today where the D7000 did a better job. I'm going to take both bodies out to shoot aspen and the rut tomorrow. We'll see how they do in a real work situation. I'll probably use the D5100 for wide angle and macro shots. I'll use the D7000 for big, fast lenses that might be too much for a plastic body.I haven't tried movie mode or some of the other features of either camera. The "special effects" menu looks like toyland, and I doubt anyone serious about photography would use them.This is a decent camera. I like its size, but not its handling, even with a vertical grip. The "Live View" is not particularly impressive, especially outdoors in the sun. The 16 MP feature is overkill in most situations. After 10MP, more is not necessarily better...unless you have very special purposes. We just tend to be memory gluttons on electronics in general. I have a 65" TV and past 1900 or maybe, 2400 pixels, it's overkill. When was the last time you printed a 30'X40" print?In the end, it is what it is...A nice, simple camera that takes decent photos without a lot of hassle.

This camera was bought when D70s quit working correctly and fixing it would cost nearly as much as a new D5100 body. It's lighter and smaller but feels well balanced and focuses very quickly with a 18-70mm Nikkor Zoom Lens and a 55-200mm (Vibration Reduction) Nikkor Zoom Lens used previously. It provides a step up with much better ISO light sensitivity, resolution and focusing. We haven't taken enough pictures yet to comment about its reliabiltiy.

Wow, this is a nice camera. I'm an old film camera guy. I always used Nikon cameras and glass for my photography. I'm really impressed with how sharp the photos are, the depth of color and the quality of the overall outfit. Even the "kit" lens is really good. I would have no problem recomending this to a friend.

It was a toss up between the 5100 and the 3100. But the 5100 has a swivel view screen that you can pull out and turn a variety of ways to see what you are shooting. 16.2 MP is nothing to sneeze at. Camera is easy to use, automatic settings or manual. NIkon makes some of the best lenses available. The 18-55 mm is going to make most folks who do landscape and people pictures happy.

I bought this camera because it was recommended by a photography teacher. It takes great picture. I am still learning all the feature.

Amazed at all of the updates that are on this camera/video shooter. I went from a D3000 to the D5100. It shipped fast, Norman's Camera even saved me money on shipped after I called them about when I could pick it up. Fed Ex worked with me to ensure I had it before my trip.

The products I bought are very useful and effective. I just need to know how to use them to suit my needs.

With Nikon lenses this camera is a typical of Nikon Philosophy cameras. Good WYSIWYG in the viewer. The sync for flashes seems to be only truly dedicated to Nikon flashes; other flashes work, but only straight on, not indirectly or bounce mode. f/11 and f/16 are quite sharp. The preset camera modes are generally good, but low light demands a tripod for some. The meter system is better than the D-40 in most cases.

Bought camera on the advice of niece's photography teacher; features and quality for the money... The camera has exceeded our expectations even though we've only scratched the surface of its capabilities thus far.

As almost everything I've bought from Amazon, it arrived before schedule and in good condition. Just be sure you realize the difference between a camera with lens and just the base. Price differ but know what you order. The base fits all my other Nikon lens but the old ones I need to focus manually. It's a great camera

Upgraded to this camera from a couple of old Minolta film cameras (one manual, one automatic).I can't speak to all the technical details, it seems to do what it needs to do well, and has enough advanced functions to keep an amateur like myself both busy, engaged, and sometimes bewildered.Great pictures when great pictures are composed, vivid colors, all around happy with this.If you're an amateur, have a limited budget, and still want some room to grown and learn, I certainly recommend this.My biggest gripes: lack of a real HDR setting (which is probably appreciated by others), and, as far as I can tell, when setting the camera to shoot with a remote, you can only take one picture and then have to go back to the camera to set up again. Weird.

I started out with a Nikon D40, which was perfect for a beginner DSLR user. Moving to the D5100 was a smart move when it was time for an upgrade. There is a bit of a learning curve involved in mastering this camera, but I feel the effort will be well worth it.

I've had the camera for a couple of weeks, and I love it. The quality has been overly great in comparison to my old d3000, and the video quality is good as well. Could ask for a bit more manual control over the video, but I'll take what I can get for now. Overall, a great camera and I love using it.

I have not been this happy with a digital SLR purchase since the 1d Mk2 around 2004/5. It does everything that you need in an SLR, but at the price of an advanced P&S.If it were not for professional use (high demands on a camera body for speed and durability), this would be THE Dslr for me. Swivel screen makes it fun to get low/high and compose your shots. Focusing with the center point is great, fast(ish) and accurate to a fault using the likes of a 40mm micro, and 17-55/2.8 Nikkor.The resolution is great and provides real estate that allows for detailed and beautiful prints up to around 20x30". Great set of features for this price bracket too.Get one.

So I purchased the body only last Thursday. I may have taken two pictures and I saw 4 consistent spots on f11 and higher. I used a different lens and took multiple pictures over and over again and the same spots occurred. Nikon's Clean image sensor function couldn't get it off whatever that was. It did take good pictures below f11 with minor visibility of those spots but a brand new camera shouldn't have that problem. It could have been a defective or returned item as the components seemed to be packed in a rush. I also noticed some imprint on camera's body and I know for sure that Nikon doesn't slap an LCD protector on the screen(that confirmed my suspicion).Quality defects - memory card grinds upon inserting and removing; battery refuses to come out.Not happy

The camera has met my husband's expectations so far. Only that it didn't come with a pouch will be coming back to get one!

My husband bought this for me as a Christmas present along with a 40mm macro lens. Both perform very well, particularly in low light where the sensor in this camera excels. Also, like the D40 it is replacing, it has a relatively small size for an SLR. Highly recommended.

I'm not a professional photographer, but i travel a lot. this camera is great for anyone that wants to take a great picture and a variety of pictures without having to spend time editing afterwards. it's user friendly, well built and doesn't have the cheap feeling of some other cameras. i'd highly recommend this for the avid traveler.

This is just a first impression review because, I've only had the camera for a couple days. So far, I am enjoying my D5100 a lot. I am finding a lot of tutorials on YouTube.com that are helping me learn the basics. I already know that I will be investing money into new lenses, probably a Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras first and then a Rokinon FE8M-C 8mm F3.5 Fisheye Lens for Canon - Black for filming my friends' skateboarding. I am having trouble finding a video editing software I feel comfortable using. I'm not sure whether to go with Adobe Premiere, Sony Vegas, or what! Also, I've heard editing HD video can be hard on your computer (vista+4GB RAM=meh).SO yeah, I've got a long confusing road ahead of me.
