 I don't want to be dramatic, but our experience with the Botvac D5 and Neato customer support has been a bit of a nightmare. I should start by telling you that we are now on our 3rd Botvac D5, and as I type it is essentially malfunctioning across our house. I should note that in spite of our significant issues right off the bat, it is against Neato's policy to offer refunds (Edit: This is what I was told when I initially sought a refund; however, since then I was offered a refund after calling in), so we are essentially stuck with the robot (which cost us nearly $700 , plus a $60 two year extended warranty. It should be noted that we keep our house clean. We purchased the robot to help clean up dog hair so that we didn't have to vacuum every second day.

1st Robot - After four total uses it completely died. I believe they suspected a battery issue. I contacted neato, tried all their steps and they agreed to send me a new robot (after I mailed the robot back and they received it). They were slow with responses and it took around 3 weeks to get a new robot sent out.

2nd Robot - Ran 3 times before it's left bumper (detects collisions with objects) became stuck in place, making the robot believe it was constantly in contact with a foreign object, which led it to constantly drive backwards before ultimately shutting down and telling us that it was stuck. Neato's only solution for our brand new robot was to quickly and aggressively tap the bumper for 30 seconds hoping it would free itself. It did... temporarily. This became an ongoing issue to the point that before each run (and sometimes midway through the run) we would have to perform this procedure in the hopes that it would make it through the vacuum. This was unacceptable for a brand new $700 machine, so we contacted Neato and asked for a refund (which they explicitly declined), and ultimately settled upon yet another replacement, which we had to push for.

3rd Robot - This one has been a real lemon. I have attempted to run this thing 6 times since we got it. Not once has it come even close to vacuuming the house. Each time it's tried it has fumbled around the house, occasionally violently bashing into things, and running it's battery into the red, before clumsily trying to dock with things on the other end of the house from the actual charging station. I came in from working outside to find that it was attempting to dock with our couch. The dock is placed in a clear area with no obstructions. Despite the issues with the previous robots, they could at least vacuum the house well AND dock themselves independently without an intervention. Each of the 6 times I've tried to use this robot I've ultimately had to stop it, pick it up, and manually place it in the dock to charge.

I contacted Neato and they said what they always say: Clean the brush, clean the sensor, blow out the laser with compressed air. Today I diligently performed the suggested steps AGAIN and have been documenting the catastrophe that is this robot with my phone. It has given me the "clear my path" error no less than 7 times, and each time has been nowhere close to being stuck on ANYTHING. Once it gave me the error when it was literally in the middle of an open floor with nothing around it for 5 feet. It would almost be comical if it weren't so frustrating.

I didn't want to unfairly judge Neato after the first robot, or maybe even the second... but this is my THIRD robot. We have gotten maybe a grand total of 20 vacuums out of our 3 different robots, many of which were incomplete or fraught with errors. WHEN it worked, it actually worked well, and we were happy with the level of cleaning it provided, but the issues we have experienced FAR outweigh the occasional cleaning.

I WOULD NOT recommend this robot to anyone. For ~$700 I expect better... but hey, at least it's on sale right now ;)

I'm editing this review after spending further time testing both the D5 Connected and the Ecovac DeeBot R95. The coverage map is amazingly accurate and quite clever. Its too bad the robot is unable to do anything with the map except present it to you to prove where it has cleaned. I cannot believe the feature "clean this room" has not come up as a request or even an idea from their product management. The only cleaning options are 1) auto clean the entire house 2) spot clean a small area by physically locating the vacuum where to start and clean a radius around it. Supposedly the D7 will allow the create or virtual boundaries using the generated map, but its not clear if it will allow the definition of cleaning zones. feel like its an experiment that isn't quite ready for consumer use and belongs in a lab. I mean, the two obvious use cases that should work which don't: 1) clean this room. 2) pickup a 1/2" pet hair from a hardwood floor. These should have been thought out and tested properly.

I've also been trying a Deebot R95, which, in theory has more features available with regards to the mapping functionality. However, it is a much less capable navigator than the Neato D5. If I hadn't tried the D5 first, I would have thought maybe this was a standard problem. The R95 was not able to climb onto a mat at my front door which isn't more than 3/8" high. It also wasn't able to climb onto the anti-fatigue mats in the kitchen at all. Surprisingly, it made it over a 5/5" wooden threshold between rooms. By comparison, the D5 went up and down, over the mats like nobody's business. The R95 is also a lot quieter which seems to correlate to less suction.

There is no perfect robot vacuum, although i think the D5 Connected with better software is heading in the right direction.

Updated review:

Turns out part of the problem was my robot itself. Had to send it back to Neato to get it fixed. I just got the robot back and it's working well again. Overall, I'm happy with the cleaning functionality of the robot but the privacy concerns remain. The customer service was actually great - 5 stars for that.

My original 1-star review is below.

I did not know this when I bought the D5 and for a long time after that the robot needs to be connected to the Neato servers for it to be able to clean or do anything. They have had on and off server issues for months now and I haven't been able to use my robot consistently at all.

To me, there is absolutely no valid reason for it to have to connect to their servers other than software upgrades. It's DRM/spyware gone mad. Who knows what they're doing with all the floor plans?

2 dogs, 2 free parrots. Wood stove. This thing takes 30 min to clean 1000 sq ft and the bin is full each time. I managed to have it suck up wood bits, np. Loose towels on the floor are usually ok. Dog bed on top of rug on top of carpet and this thing climbs right up to clean. It gets stuck occasionally on piles of jackets/dirty laundry. They should have hired me to be a tester. I had to give it first aid after it drove over the jar of plastic straws the parrot threw on the floor. After a foreign body removal operation, it was happily beeping and on its way again. The dog will actually get up and move for the D5, however the birds prefer to ride around on it like a train car. So far it has been worth the cost.

3rd Update: So, we've had the Neato Botvac D5 since January 2018 (now May 2019). It lost wi-fi connection after about 6 months - couldn't get it to connect no matter which way I tried. The machine then died about 2 months ago and I thought it must be the battery. I just got around to ordering a new battery, installed it today and ..............nothing. It was extremely expensive for a vacuum cleaner. Over $600 with tax!! I am so NOT impressed. The hunt continues for something reliable. Oh, and I'll return the new battery to Amazon since it does not seem to be the problem.

I have owned this unit for 7 months now, and at best it has only worked intermittently from the box. I have reached out to customer support a number of times and am instructed to troubleshoot the unit myself - which will eventually clear the error and have the unit running for 1 pass around the house again before it refuses to work. Everytime I attempt to run it I invest around 40 minutes trying to get it to work. Finally support has agreed to allow me to SUBMIT a return for repair - but I have to wait up to 5 days before it is possibly approved. I am very disappointed with support, and the hardware itself. When it works, it cleans like a dream - but for a device which is supposed to automate housework and make it easier - it's only been an exercise in frustration. Very disappointed with Neato.

I'm lazy. I waited to set up my Neato Botvac D5 until after the warranty period.

When it stopped working a month in to use, I was crushed. I figured Support was going to tell me to pound salt.
Instead they took my little dude back, fixed him up super quickly and under warranty, and shipped him back with surprising speed.

I also got a really nice follow-up e-mail from their support making sure he was running as he should.

Nemo surprises me on a daily basis.
Daily, because that's how often I run him.

I am disabled and can't vacuum, so having this bubbly little dude to putter around my apartment for me is a Godsend.
I'm also allergic to dust, so having him take care of the little things for me means that I'm less exposed to allergens.

My boyfriend and I speak of him as if he were a pet. (We called him Nemo in case he ever got lost. He did twice, and it was entirely my fault.)
My cat isn't his biggest fan, but he's learning to ignore it.

The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because it did have to be sent in for what I suspect was a known software issue. I also don't quite understand why my Ultra Performance filter was switched out for a High Performance one, but on the other hand; new filter!

Thank you to the Neato Robotics Support team for the fantastic service.
I'm so glad to have Nemo in my life.

This is an amazing little robot. I have 1 white Balinese cat and black hardwood floors. We constantly have fur tumbleweeds after every 4 days on our floors and so much dust/dander that shows on the black wood. This botvac is so effective it looks like I polished my floors! I don't know if it's the filter, or the brushes, or what, but I have a Dyson and it does not get the same results. I would have to use my Dyson + mop my floors with a shining solution to get the same look. We have 1400 sq ft split between two floors. Each floor takes max 45 minutes and it does a thorough job. No issues with it in the first couple days. We will have to use the magnetic roll in 2 areas so it doesn't get stuck under the coffee table (the robot is 1cm too high for it but it still tries to get under it since nothing is hitting it's bumper) but other than that it works perfectly. It also has no problem to watch out for the stairs when it's working on the upstairs floor and I've seen it work in the dark. I also find it the perfect size to get under the majority of furniture. As far as rugs go, we have 1 medium pile thick rug and it works fairly well on it. It does slow down a bit on the rug, but i don't think that's a negative since it sucks quite a bit of dirt out of it.

Bought the NEATO D5 in January of 2018 used it first time the 16th of January, robot had issues from the start, getting lost not being able to find the base. Despite of making sure there is nothing In the way to block the movement of the robot. DON'T WORK WITH ALEXA, was able to contact support first day I got it and was told, sorry we are working on the ALEXA skill and it will be out soon, six months later there is no skill. After the 1st 2 weeks of usage bigger problems started, it was acting strangely I would keep coming back to base more often, if it made to it at all that is, constant I'm stuck messages would come to my phone. My wife just gave up and stopped using it .... I tried contacting customer service again several times via chat, spending countless minutes waiting and waiting, giving up every time, finally in July I didn't give up and waited until someone answered, it took half hour to get a response. I guess because they are located in Europe and don't work through the night, I can understand that. So after explaining everything to Sarah. I was told the robot has a problem with the battery and needs to be replaced but the warranty was denied since it only comes with 6 months warranty. I was literally week over the warranty. Despite customer satisfaction representative reviewed my case, warranty was still denied. I was told the battery went bad because I didn't use the robot enough, how can you use something that won't work and you have hard time contacting support. So I cannot recommend this product, there are other problems too, the corner brush keeps coming off, If you have a carpet I will get stuck on the corner every time, battery  does not last as long as they claim, the map of the cleaned area is different every time. Stay away from the NEATO brand and get something else instead. In my opinion they will look for any excuse to get away from warranty claims on their products. I even send them the cleaning history you can see on pictures, and it shows clearly the usage, once a day or every second day for two weeks and then nothing till July when they asked me to start it again. Again, trust me stay away from NEATO. Two stars because it does vacume the floors.

I’ve had this about 1 month now. It really is an amazing little machine. I agree with others who say it would be nice if Alexa functionality included “No go” lines but hopefully that will come in a future update. I looked at other brands that bumped around randomly and decided on this one as the mapping ability just makes more sense. Once it maps your rooms the first time it knows where all the big furniture and doors are. It navigates through 8 rooms and a hallway with ease. If you move things like kitchen chairs it speeds up the process.

I've been using this thing 3 days a week to keep up on the vacuuming while i"m gone. ~1400 sqft main floor it completes in an hour and in 4 months it's only gotten stuck 2 times. It does a decent job except right at the edges of the floor and makes the nice straight lines that I want in the rug after. This little unit has saved me quite a few hours of vacuuming over the time i've owned it to the point I'm going to get one for the other floors in my house.

So far we are very impressed by this little robot. We run it on a schedule every two days and we don't have to use the vacuum anymore! Just a little broom in the corners once in a while.
You must remember to pick up any stray socks or anything lying on the floor though because it will get stuck on it.
You can pick it up to different floors to clean them, very useful to clean under the bed ;)
A lot of my friends have a Roomba and this Neato is so much better. Would definitely recommend!
