Beast at rendering. Might be selling my older 2990.
Setup went perfect no problems. Using the 3970x, CMW128GX4M8C3000C16 ram, Enermax 360 cooler. Everything programs runs drastically faster then my 2990wx machine. Terragen, Vray/3dsMax, Cinebench.
Good motherboard but pricey
I like the motherboard, my only gripe at a $500 pricepoint is the 2 onboard M.2 SSD slots. It comes with an expander module which can house more, but my mid size tower is crammed with enough hardware, the last thing I need is to stuff another part inside of it. Good motherboard, just wish it was cheaper. Updating the Bios is very easy, go to the AMD website, download the firmware onto a USB and plug that in to your PC to update.
Didn't Recognize RAM, then Bricked Itself
First of all, the listing is wrong. This is not a "dual 10G LAN" board. It has two onboard ONE gigabit ports and comes packaged with a 10GBase-T PCI-E card.
I was impressed by the build quality (this board comes with the chonkiest M.2 adapter I have ever laid eyes on), but on powering the device on, it only detected one of my four DIMMS (after some time, it started seeing two -- not a good sign). I thought to update the firmware, and during the update the motherboard bricked itself. I ended up replacing with a competitor's part.
A motherboard that is capable of bricking during a firmware update here in the year 2020 must have a fundamentally flawed design. Stay away.

As good as the top of the line enthusiast boards
If you need a simple (take that with a grain of salt) board that boots fast and runs your latest Threadripper build, give this one a look. It may not have all the added on features, bells and whistles as a high end enthusiast gamer board, but it will fit into a midi tower (ATX), doesn't take so long to boot because of all the added features and chips, and will still provide all the performance that comes with the latest Threadripper platform. The board is well configured, no shenanigans to provide more power to CPU to make the board appear faster in benchmarks but causing issues with stability. I would have like a couple more USB ports, but the number is (just about) sufficient for my needs. I can always use external hub or add a PCI card.
Don't buy this....
This is an ill-conceived and developed motherboard. #1: Missing hardware. The hardware necessary to install this board and its accessories were missing. I had to use my own hardware to install this board. #2: The M2 sockets, which came with heatsinks were a joke as their height did NOT allow me to properly seat my GPU. and #3: Once installed, the motherboard displayed a D0-CPU initialization error. The motherboard would not boot. This board is not worth the time and money. Moreover, when I notified Amazon, I chose to have the board picked up at my residence. It never happened. I ended up taking the board to UPS who said they never received the pick-up order from Amazon so I had to return the board at my expense.
When I went online to Amazon support I spend over 30 minutes explaining, and re-explaining to 4-5 different individuals the issues I had returning the board. They could not answer any of my queries so they finally took my number and I received a call from an Amazon agent. She was the only one who understood what had happened and was able to locate the package in transit where the initial online individuals could not. It's disturbing the low level of knowledge of online support from Amazon.
When I went online to Amazon support I spend over 30 minutes explaining, and re-explaining to 4-5 different individuals the issues I had returning the board. They could not answer any of my queries so they finally took my number and I received a call from an Amazon agent. She was the only one who understood what had happened and was able to locate the package in transit where the initial online individuals could not. Do not buy this motherboard under any conditions! I have tried to use it for my DAW software, and it is unuseable due to the extraneous noise it generates. I have left emails for their tech support which have gone unanswered for 2 months, I have contacted their Customer Support as well, again no answer from anyone.

MSI is not responding, so I can't return it to them, nor get it repaired (if that is even possible).

Well Designed Professional Board
No RGB bling bling, only the digital LED status indicators. Everything was right about the design, and quality. I did have some trouble with getting Linux installed. I wound up disabling UEFI and using CPS boot, which allowed the actual Linux install to go through. Very odd that Live Boot from USB worked, but actual but from NVMe or Spinning DIsk after install wasn't working with EUFI. Other than that, board performs extremely well, and I'll attribute the issue to this being relatively new, and Linux not having quite caught up.
Monster for today's geek
Running 32 cores, 6x 1TB PCIE Sabrent in RAID 0 (other 4 are in ASUS Hyper M2), 5700XT. This thing is unstoppable. Haven't reached 50% CPU utilization in 2 months I had it. Plus it's super stable running W10.

Board has 2 NVMe M.2 slots with aluminum heat shield/cooler. It comes with a PCIE card that supports more M.2 NVMe storage. Also comes with 10GBe network card and 2x1GBe on board NICs. Haven't had any issues with the boards I got so far, it was a little tricky setting up the NVMe M.2 into a mirrored RAID array (RAID1), as it is a multi-step process and the manual doesn't quite step you through the process, but that is pretty typical with all motherboard manuals, so no dings there. Supports MSIs "mystic light" so you can control all your RGB lights to give the effect you want. Not much else to say, it just works.

Excellent Motherboard for High-End System
I bought this motherboard to build a high-performance build system for Linux operating system stack. I equipped it with an ADM Ryzen Threadripper 3990X, 128 GB RAM (1 GB per thread), 2 2 TB NVMe drives and an AMD Radeo 5600XT based graphics adapter. The graphics adapter might be an overkill since I typically don't play any 3D games on this system.
I am very pleased with this motherboard. The construction is excellent and well though out. It is a very robust and solid board. Besides the 2 M.2 lots for NVMe drives on the board it ships with an adapter that lets you add another two drives (at the expense of a PCIe slot). It has 2 1 1000BaseT Ethernet ports on the board but a 10GBaseT adapter is also included. That is excellent. It does not have WiFi built-in like its sibling board but I don't need WiFi for this system.
Assembly is simple. All the connectors are placed in the correct locations for optimal cable routing. It makes for a very clean system if you are using a case with a glass panel. It does have connectors for LEDs etc if that is what you are looking for (the connectors support LED control schemes from different vendors including MSI's own).
If you are looking for a great TRX40 motherboard this is it, in my opinion.

It does not have WiFi built-in like its sibling board but I don't need WiFi for this system.

Solid motherboard for 3970x threadripper
I looked at all of the ATX sized TRX40 boards, and this had all the features I wanted.
In particular, its qualified memory list was more extensive than the others, making
it easier to pick the RAM I wanted. (I went with HyperX Fury 64GB 3200MHz DDR4
CL16 DIMM (Kit of 4) RGB XMP Desktop Memory HX432C16FB3AK4/64).
This combination gives a rock solid 3200/cl16 in its first profile, and is expandable
to 128GB. I'm running Windows 10 and Fedora 31 with no issues. I have
an EVGA AIO water cooler, with idle temps in the 40's.
Pros:
- The m.2 expansion card is a nice bonus, with 4 slots under a massive heatsink.
- rock solid operation, with a comprehensive set of BIOS options.
Cons:
- No RGB leds on the board, but there are three different types of RGB headers
(RGB, Corsair, and Rainbow). None of these currently have Linux drivers,
although they seem to keep their settings if setup under windows.
(I have OpenRGB for the DRAMS, and cooler, which are good enough for me.)

I bought two different MSI motherboard this year and both were DOA!!! The first one was broken in two because of the deficient packaging and this one had residue in the CPU socket pins that prevented from booting but could have totally fried my threadripper!!!! Never buying MSI again! I bought both asus and gigabyte and those worked without a hitch! So keep away from MSI!

It is one of the few MBs for this CPU that does not have WiFi Built in: I don't need or want that.
It's PCIe lanes are set up 16-8-16-8 and it has a PCIe 1 slot too.
No PCIe slot is covered by the double wide video card though the next slot is close.
It has 2 Intel 1G NICs on the board.
It has 2 M.2 slots with direct CPU access (more later).
It comes with an expansion card to add 2 more M.2 slots with direct CPU access.
It comes with a 10G network card too, though I will probably not need it unless I set up a second one of these.
The things I don't like are mostly nit picking.
It has lighting control. It's like a racing stripe on a car: It doesn't make it go faster.
The M.2 slots: It would be nice if they were mounted horizontally somewhere: Easier to get at and easier to cool.
The manual is a bit sparse on details setting up the BIOS.
It could use more fan headers, or at least not have them located in just 2 places on the board.
Finished picking nits: It seems like a nice solid board, and good value for the money.
I bought two different MSI motherboard this year and both were DOA!!! The first one was broken in two because of the deficient packaging and this one had residue in the CPU socket pins that prevented from booting but could have totally fried my threadripper!!!! Never buying MSI again! I bought both asus and gigabyte and those worked without a hitch! So keep away from MSI!
Setup went perfect no problems. Using the 3970x, CMW128GX4M8C3000C16 ram, Enermax 360 cooler. Everything programs runs drastically faster then my 2990wx machine. Terragen, Vray/3dsMax, Cinebench.
I like the motherboard, my only gripe at a $500 pricepoint is the 2 onboard M.2 SSD slots. It comes with an expander module which can house more, but my mid size tower is crammed with enough hardware, the last thing I need is to stuff another part inside of it. Good motherboard, just wish it was cheaper. Updating the Bios is very easy, go to the AMD website, download the firmware onto a USB and plug that in to your PC to update.
First of all, the listing is wrong. This is not a "dual 10G LAN" board. It has two onboard ONE gigabit ports and comes packaged with a 10GBase-T PCI-E card.

If you need a simple (take that with a grain of salt) board that boots fast and runs your latest Threadripper build, give this one a look. It may not have all the added on features, bells and whistles as a high end enthusiast gamer board, but it will fit into a midi tower (ATX), doesn't take so long to boot because of all the added features and chips, and will still provide all the performance that comes with the latest Threadripper platform. The board is well configured, no shenanigans to provide more power to CPU to make the board appear faster in benchmarks but causing issues with stability. I would have like a couple more USB ports, but the number is (just about) sufficient for my needs. I can always use external hub or add a PCI card.
This is an ill-conceived and developed motherboard. #1: Missing hardware. The hardware necessary to install this board and its accessories were missing. I had to use my own hardware to install this board. #2: The M2 sockets, which came with heatsinks were a joke as their height did NOT allow me to properly seat my GPU. and #3: Once installed, the motherboard displayed a D0-CPU initialization error. The motherboard would not boot. This board is not worth the time and money. Moreover, when I notified Amazon, I chose to have the board picked up at my residence. It never happened. I ended up taking the board to UPS who said they never received the pick-up order from Amazon so I had to return the board at my expense.
When I went online to Amazon support I spend over 30 minutes explaining, and re-explaining to 4-5 different individuals the issues I had returning the board. They could not answer any of my queries so they finally took my number and I received a call from an Amazon agent. She was the only one who understood what had happened and was able to locate the package in transit where the initial online individuals could not. It's disturbing the low level of knowledge of online support from Amazon.

Do not buy this motherboard under any conditions! I have tried to use it for my DAW software, and it is unuseable due to the extraneous noise it generates. I have left emails for their tech support which have gone unanswered for 2 months, I have contacted their Customer Support as well, again no answer from anyone.

No RGB bling bling, only the digital LED status indicators. Everything was right about the design, and quality. I did have some trouble with getting Linux installed. I wound up disabling UEFI and using CPS boot, which allowed the actual Linux install to go through. Very odd that Live Boot from USB worked, but actual but from NVMe or Spinning DIsk after install wasn't working with EUFI. Other than that, board performs extremely well, and I'll attribute the issue to this being relatively new, and Linux not having quite caught up.
Running 32 cores, 6x 1TB PCIE Sabrent in RAID 0 (other 4 are in ASUS Hyper M2), 5700XT. This thing is unstoppable. Haven't reached 50% CPU utilization in 2 months I had it. Plus it's super stable running W10.
