Background:I installed this on two Windows XP Professional SP2 systems.I followed the instructions to the letter, installing the CD FIRST, before plugging in the camera.I am a 30 year software developer who has tested dozens of webcams over the past 5 years and writes videoconferencing software for Windows using DirectX.1. The installer is obnoxious. On the first XP system, it displayed the progress box, with the progress bar filling and emptying, for 30 minutes, and it never finished. Twice during installing, the spoolsv.exe service (part of Windows....) crashed. I never could get the installer to work.2. On the second system, it worked, but then, lo and behold, I am besieged by badgering to install Windows Live Messenger. I unchecked the box during installation, which tells it I DO NOT WANT that installed.And STILL it drops a shortcut for Windows Live Call on my desk top, which, when I click it, tells me I should install Windows Live Messenger.Delete C:\Program Files\Microsoft LifeCam\icepick.exe to nuke this app, and delete the shortcut, to get rid of this.3. Every time you log in, you get the annoying tray icon application, and sometimes a popup window from the LifeCam application. Argh!!!! Logitech does this too. You have to dig into the registry, find the "Run" folder, and delete the entry for the LifeCam in there, to stop this.4. The EULA license agreement you have to agree to, in order to finish the installer, specifically says that you are required to let this thing automatically connect to the internet and download software updates for itself. BULL TO THAT. Right there, I do NOT want this thing on my computer.NOW, it gets out of the realm of invasiveness and annoying behavior, into real performance problems...5. Managing video from this camera with generic applications like Amcap causes very weird behavior. Large black blotches all over the screen, sluggish PC performance. (this is a Core 2 Duo Dell Latitude that I just got 3 months ago, with a real NVidia video module in it, and 1 Gig of RAM... it is no slouch for performance)6. IT CAN ONLY DO 15 FRAMES PER SECOND.That, right there, rules it out as a decent camera in my book. If you want to do sluggish webcam chats with Yahoo or something, fine. But if you want any kind of smooth video, forget it. Any decent camera these days just HAS to do 30 fps.7. CPU load is high. A simple 15 fps 352x288 capture to the screen, like in AMCAP, consumes 15% CPU on my Core 2 Duo machine. Compare that to only 6% for a Logitech QuickCam Pro For Notebooks, which produces every bit as good video, at TWICE THE FRAMERATE (30 fps).Summary:Video performance poor.Installer shoddy.Privacy/software updating invasiveness.Obnoxious foisting of Live Messenger onto the user.Stick with Logitech.

I haven't used the webcam a lot yet, but I did set it up and play around with the features for a while. I'm looking forward to actually using it to talk to friends and family. It's very small and fits great in my laptop case. It was very easy to set up and use.

As web-cams go the "Microsoft LifeCam Show" falls in the middle of the pack somewhere. As is often the case with Microsoft hardware the basic design and intended functionality is very good. But as is also often the case with MS products, what is delivered falls well short.What's in the box:One of the best aspects of this camera is its physical design. The camera its self is oval and about 1 x 2 inches. It's about a quarter of an inch thick. On the front and back of the camera are magnetized sockets that receive steal balls on the various mounting hardware that comes with the unit. The camera comes with two stick-on mounts, one clip-on mount and a 12-inch tall desk stand with a weighted base. The USB cable on the unit is about 3-feet long. As long as the cord from the unit has plenty of slack coming to the unit the mounting system works well. If you plan on placing the camera more than three feet away from the USB port, or if the cable will be hanging more than 3-feet, you'll want to get an extension.Software installation:The instructions for the camera make it plain that the software must be installed before plugging in the camera. I installed the software on a 4-month old Dell 530 with 2-GB of RAM and Vista Home Premium with the latest service pack and updates installed as of 01/03/09. I inserted the supplied disk and it went through the initial steps of installation without issue. However, once it reached the point of actually installing the files after reaching the end of the progress bar the install started over and continued to re-install the files until I went to "Task Manager" and closed the installer. I tried several more times to install the software with the same result. I decided to reboot the system and see if the install had completed successfully before starting to troubleshoot the problem. Upon reboot the software was installed and the icon was on the desktop. It seems to be working as intended.Using the camera:Once the software is installed, it is fairly user friendly and straight forward. When plugged into a USB port the camera was quickly recognized and the image was available in the application's view window. The quality of the image is very nice. The colors are bright and true and the image is sharp and crisp (in the default 640x480 resolution). The camera does a good job of using low ambient light. I tested it with just the light from the monitor and the picture looked fine. The problem comes when the camera tries to pick-up motion. The frame rate is so low that the picture is stuttery and subject to motion blur even when the motion is quite slow.This camera is alright for most applications, but I would have expected better video performance and ease of installation from a camera at this price.

When will I learn? The software install caused me to have to reinstall Win 7 because it caused USB hub device faults every few seconds. This camera is nicely made but the color balance flickered every few seconds making the device useless. Tried 3 different Microsoft Cams and they each exhibited some unacceptable hardware or software problem. Lifecam Cinema, and 5000HD high end cams too were useless and also produced problems. All of these models drag down the CPU. Low or no hardware acceleration.Installed the Logitech Webcam 9000 Pro and viola! No Issues!!!Microsoft Does It Again. My advice is to steer clear of this product. This is not the first time I've encountered Microsoft hardware not working well with their own operating system or office applications. I'm just about ready to throw in the towel and get a mac.Bottom line: try Logitech instead. they have more robust hardware, fast, stable and feature rich software.

First of all, i would like to applaud Microsoft for their first rate packaging.The price is it's obvious drawback to buying this webcam, but since you can get it on sale on here, it's no big deal: you could probably get a better camera with 80 dollars or so if bought at retail price...-Picture quality is better than most webcams and definitely better than almost all built in webcams.-There are a lot of effects that come with the software which can be fun and easy to use.-Slim and sleek design; also comes with a handy case to hold the webcam in for carrying to places.The only major problem with this is only the frame-rate which i believe only goes to 15. It's not that much of a problem though, and i believe i am picky about frame rate.Overall, i think this is a great webcam to buy, but Microsoft could've done better for the price.

The Microsoft LifeCam Show is a pretty good little camera, with some good design features. The picture quality is quite adequate for a camera of its size. The frame rate isn't fantastic, but it's adequate for video chatting.The first thing I appreciated about this product was the driver installation. The usual hardware installation process goes something like this:- Install the drivers from the CD- Plug in the hardware and try to use it- Try to find the support area on the manufacturer's website- Enter the product model number and serial number, which are usually hidden on the bottom of the device (which is a lot of fun when it's a big multi-function printer)- Download and install new drivers- Use the product, which now works correctlyWith the LifeCam Show, the process was:- Run the install program from the CD and *watch it download the current drivers*- Plug in and use the device, which works correctly first timeALL HARDWARE VENDORS: Please read the above and DO THIS FOR ALL YOUR PRODUCTS!!!It took a while longer than simply running the install from the CD. But I did some other work while the downloads were running, and the stress-free install process was worth the wait.The camera comes with three mounting options:- A stand that puts the camera at about head height when placed on a desk- A clip to attach to a laptop screen or monitor- Two sticky-back dots that can be placed on a monitor or other flat surfaceAll of the mounts use a magnetic bump that fits into a magnetic ring on the camera. I found the "grip" to be adequate for normal use; the camera did not come loose unless I shook it pretty hard. A nice touch is that there are mounting rings on both the front and back of the camera.The monitor clip fit my laptop, but just barely. Listen up, Microsoft: a lot of laptop covers are pretty thick these days. Make the clip more adjustable.Reviewer "Paul" complained that he couldn't use the sticky dots because the back of his monitor isn't flat. Neither is mine. I put the dot on the front of the monitor. It worked just fine there.Another very nice touch with this product is a plastic case for the camera. This cam is small enough to toss into your briefcase or computer carry case. It's nice to have something to protect the camera so it doesn't get scratched in transit. Webcam manufacturers... are you paying attention?This camera does just about everything right. If the video speed was better, it would be an ideal product.

I bought this cam because it was affordably priced, and seemed like it would do good enough. It's okay. But I do have problems with it.I use it for making Skype calls and AIM messaging and have tried some Flash-based chat rooms. The microphone must be pretty good because I've not had anyone say they could not understand what I'm saying. On Skype people have said they thought I was on the phone. That's great!The video is where the problems lie. Using AOL Instant Messenger, the video sometimes blanks out to a white screen. Restarting AIM does not help. AND the video in AIM gets squished so I look like I have an alien head. Using Flash chat, the camera cannot be zoomed in at all.Otherwise, I guess the camera is okay when it works. It can lighten the video well in low light. I ended up using the movable, foot-high stand, which is good in that I can place the camera in front of the screen. So, when I'm watching the person I'm talking to, it actually looks like I'm looking at the camera, which makes for a friendlier video for them. The camera doesn't attach to anything, it uses magnets which work better than I expected.The software downloaded from the internet from Microsoft. It has some fun features that use face-location software that will make the mouth or nose or eyes bigger, or place 3-dimensional masks or a hats on your head -- and they actually swivel in 3-d space, too! Sounds dumb but it is funny.

I am not using this webcam for the same reason that most people probably do. Instead of video chatting with friends and family, I set this up facing out my back upstairs window so that my mother and friends could enjoy a live view of the beautiful hills and wheat fields behind our house. I'd used a couple cheaper webcams beforehand and the results were never quite fantastic. When the opportunity came to get a better camera up, I took it, and was quite pleased.The first thing I really like is the easy configuration. Really, not much configuration was necessary out of the box because the focus, brightness, contrast and color was quite accurate. It worked without any issues with Yawcam to broadcast the image and a wide range of resolutions were available.It came with several different types of stands which made finding a way to set it up extremely easy, so I was quite pleased with that. Overall, it's a small, decent, and attractive piece of hardware. Although, for my use, someday I will find a small USB-capable point and shoot camera with a larger sensor and better optics.UPDATE: Much to my disappointment several weeks back, it appears the summer sun was not kind to this little webcam. After a particularly bright day, I log in to the webcam server via my iphone only to find the image half covered in flat grey and the rest of the image entirely frozen. I went to the webcam and touched it, it was blazing hot, it had to be done for. I shut down the webcam server, so I thought, and went about my business. Well, it turns out, actually, I'd restarted the server and when it came back up, the camera resumed it's full functionality once again. Same thing the next day... overheats and freezes up, and just disabling and reenabling the camera in the software got it back up and working. I grabbed a small desk fan and placed it on the window sill next to the camera... lo and behold, no more freezing from overheating. It's still running flawlessly and producing a beautiful picture 24/7.

Just bought this to use on a 2 year old laptop running Vista. I wanted to use it with Skype, so I installed the latest version. The camera itself worked okay, but after 15 - 30 sec of a video call on Skype, the image would freeze. Tried installing/restarting everything again, and still no luck, so it has gone back.The installation was okay, although as people have said you can just plug it in and it seems to also work. Both ways ended up freezing Skype for me though.I really liked the magnetic part of the camera, being able to pull it off the stand or hook it up to the computer quickly and take it off quickly would have been quite nice.

The reason I say defect is because resolution was great, sound was great, camera quality suck. Grays were black, Reds were light Pink..it was all bad. Lights were coming in and out and I'm black but i had Micheal Jackson's complexion in this camera.I went into the settings, could only change some settings, cant put the settings on auto. Camera still did not reproduce colors great. it wasn't expectable. I'm sending it back.Only reason i gave it 3 stars is because I figured it was a good camera just that mines was defected but I recently purchased a Microsoft LifeCam Cinema to replace it.

This is by far the best "on the go" webcam I have ever owned. I can't tell you about the technical specifications, but I can tell you the picture looks great! I have another laptop that has a built in webcam and a desktop PC that I use a Logetech Quickcam and this webcam beats them in quality of picture and ease of use. The Logetech webcam has a a few more features but this also comes with fun and interactive options that will have your have family and friends laughing while they look at you via the webcam.Installing the software did take quite a while (about 13 minutes) but once you are done installing the software, you plug in your webcam, answer a couple questions and you are all set to chat. I love the different ways you can set the camera up to your monitor. I use the clip since it fits my monitor perfectly. The stand it very sturdy and tall. The attachment discs will stick on any clean surface on your laptop cover. It also comes with an extra attachment disc in case you loose one. The magnet on the webcam is very strong and it will hold it's place securely. The webcam can also be easily adjusted to go up and down without "popping" or sliding off.The sleek and small size of this webcam makes it easy to tuck into a laptop bag and the plastic case ensures you will not scratch or damage the lens.The built-in microphone works perfectly and sounds crystal clear. I tried the webcam in low light conditions at first and it automatically focused and lighten the view and it was clear. I have attached pictures to the product so you can see for yourself how clearly the picture looks in low light conditions.

While the picture quality and focus of this camera is excellent right out of the box, I was not able to find a workable way to mount the camera for use on my desktop.The camera comes with 3 types of mounts: Desktop stand (a post about 12 inches high), Laptop screen clip, and a stick-on "dot" to be placed on the back of your monitor.None of these mounting options worked for me in terms of producing a camera position for video chat. The desktop stand is only 12 inches high, so the camera is centered on your chest rather than your face. The laptop clip only opens about 3/4 inch, so will not fit on a desktop flatscreen monitor. And the monitor dot (to be placed on the back of your monitor) didn't position the camera high enough to see over my monitor itself, without blocking 30-50% of the picture.Also, all 3 mounting options hold the camera by a magnetic disc, which allows the camera is still swivel and move very freely while attached. This means there is no way to set a specific camera angle. The USB cord actually weighs as much or more than the camera itself, so any slight touch or movement of the USB cord, and the camera angle/position changes significantly.If you do decide to purchase this camera, be prepared for a fairly lengthy installation. Even with the included sofware disc and running Windows Vista, the installation still spent 20 minutes "downloading" new software (over my very fast cable connection) before it would install the camera.

This was my first webcam, and being not particularly technical I was looking for something that was easy to use and didn't require a lot of set-up or knowledge to get it going. I have lots of friends overseas, and I was looking forward to doing some video chat.The "Microsoft LifeCam Show (Black)" did everything I wanted it to do. It was easy to set up right out of the box, installed itself as promised, and I was up and going in no time. The default settings worked fine for me, so I didn't have to fiddle with anything.There are a few different stands and ways that you can position the camera. The software it comes with also lets you do some effects, which were fun to play with but I don't think I will make any regular use of. The picture is certainly not movie-quality, and there are some jumps and lags, but nothing too bad. The quality is better than other webcams I have seen on friend's computers. I liked the noise cancellation microphone as well, which made it easy to hear.This was a great "first timers" webcam, and it has been fun being able to see my friend's faces!

This is a very good little webcam--highly portable with good quality picture and a design that is both sleek and sturdy (sturdy enough, anyway). It draws its most natural comparisons to similar Logitech cameras and it compares very favorably with them. A nice bonus is the various ways you can clip the camera to your computer, install it on its stand, and so on. It's very versatile whether you're using it with your desktop PC or taking it with you on the road. The software installs smoothly and the setup takes very little time. It is simple enough that a person who is not very technical could quite easily use it without relying on the geek in the family to do all the work.The LifeCam is just a tad expensive compared to similar cameras but is will worth the few extra bucks. I recommend it!

This web cam is nice. No complaints about the product itself. However the software is atrocious. After waiting on the install program for 45 minutes, I cancled and tried using the camera as a plain jane USB camera device. And it worked.The software is bloated and will bug you incessantly about features and applications that you don't want or need.So buy the camera but throw away the install software disk. The camera will work fine using the built in USB cam and microphone drivers. Just plug and play.

I have to say that I was impressed with this webcam.It's very thin and fairly small, with a great, sleek design. The video quality was very good. I compared it side by side with the built in webcam on a 2008 Dell XPS notebook, both set to the same resolution and on the default settings. The lifecam brightened a poorly lit room far better than the XPS webcam. However, the XPS was clearer, whereas the lifecam was a little fuzzy. But I think that internal webcams almost always have the advantage when it comes to video quality. At least, that's been my experience.The lifecam video quality wasn't jerky at all, and handled motion great. Keep in mind though, that the over all video quality is dependent also on your computer, and the video chat program you're using. This particular webcam is made to work best with Windows Messenger, although you could always use AIM or Skype.I also like that the webcam connects with magnets. The laptop clip shown in the default photo has a strong magnet on it and the lifecam wont fall off unless you give it a good shake. It also comes with a stand, and two other adhesive magnets that you can stick to the front of a monitor, or desk, or wherever.Over all, I love this webcam and think it's a great solution if your monitor doesn't already have one built in.

I have an 2004 Powerbook G4 that's running Leopard. I read Cowboy Frank's webcam review of the Lifecam Show. He thought very highly of it, and said it was a UVC webcam, so it would be compatible with Macs. I plugged in the webcam, opened iChat, and voila! It works! Just like that! Then I tried PhotoBooth. It works! Huzzah! I had a folder full of pics with warping, color inversions, and other video effects in minutes.The magnetic nubs are cool--it accommodates changing the angle of the webcam. It takes a pretty decent tug or pull on the cord to shift the webcam significantly--I've got the cord bundled on the back of my laptop. The image quality is very very good, it's fixed focus lens is optimized at 21-60 inches, which I find perfect when I use my laptop on my lap. It does really well in dim lighting conditions, the pic still comes in clear and accurate with fading daylight from a window and no room lights. Action is a little blurred on my Powerbook, I don't think my processor can handle the webcam's full potential. It's much smoother on my new Dell desktop computer. All in all great webcam! That comes with its own accessories! Wahoo!

Installed this on Windows XP WITHOUT using the software. Just plug and play, the software is not needed. Super sharp picture at a distance of about 6 inches to at least 12 feet (the depth of my room). The whole room is in focus. Works well in low light.It has many really cool ways to mount it. The back is magnetic and it comes with 3 half domes, one that can stick onto anything, one mounted on a clip (which clips easily to a half inch width but struggles with three quarters of an inch) and one 11.5 inch "stick on a stand". The camera itself is a little smaller than 2.5 inches by 1.5 inches. The USB cord is about 2.5 feet long.My kids are using this with Skype to show grandparents all the pictures they draw, the guinea pig, themselves, their new Christmas toys etc. As it is easily removed to say, show the newest Lego creation in detail, and then replaced it works very well for video phone calls. We have not had any trouble with the frame rate when using it for calling, the problem is usually more with the bandwidth of our connection than the webcam.

The fun part (if you can call it that) about the LifeCam show was finding all of the great little magnetic connection/mounting options available. There's still nothing large enough to clip onto an LCD monitor so I needed to resort to the stand. My monitors don't have flat surfaces on the back so I couldn't use the stick-on magnets.The software that comes with the camera seems pretty useless. In fact, I'm not even sure what it does. It took forever to install, and then I had to reboot. The LifeShow app would never run (it always said connecting) and the call button on the camera only works with Windows Live Messaging and I kept getting prompted to install that. So I quickly removed all of the software and the cam kept on working so I was happy!I was satisfied with video and microphone but keep in mind that my primary chat application for video is either skype or chat in gmail. It would have been very nice if I could have configured the call button on the camera to work with any app I wanted.

OK, so this tiny clip on camera is bundled with all sorts of MSN toys for a pc. Great. But before we hooked it up to my wife's laptop, I plugged it into our Apple laptop and get this: NO stupid loading of extra apps or software: plugged in, went right to iChat and it worked flawlessly!for $99, this is a true sweetheart of a small and strong camera. My daughter immediately confiscated it for her Mac laptop and I waved goodbye... to her girlfriend on the other end.With iChat, a true no-brainer. Newer MacBooks may have a camera, but for all of the rest of us, The microsoft LifeCam works with Skype, iChat and looks like all of the other chat programs. This is a review a few hours into opening the box, so excuse the lack of PC review, but for an Applehead, by far the best camera we've played with: exceptional clarity and again, simple.So highly recommended, I can't tell ya!

Ok, so I am barely computer litterate & have never used a webcam before. I had no problem loading up, plugging it in or getting it to work. I was especially impressed with the compact , sleek design. It is really portable( it even has a handy protective carrying case.) I also like all of the different mounting options (a stend, a monitor clip for a laptop, several magnet mounting pieces) and that you can aim the camera either tword the kwyboard or forward into the room ( you can also use it handheld, to a limited extent) The video picture looks really good, but with a little studdering in the image. All in all I like this camera & will get good use out of it.

I was really surprised at how clear the picture on this camera is. Bright and really nice. It also has lots of "extras" with icons and silly faces, and special effects (black and white, mirror image etc.) However, for some reason it does not let me adjust the video and audio-the button seems to be disabled each time I click on it. Everything else works, so I don't understand why that one doesn't. I have yet to call the company to ask about it, but when a product doesn't work right off the bat, and you need to start calling customer service, it irks me.

I am very happy with this product. I have only had one glitch. The microphone settings keep changing everytime I use the microphone and so I must go back to the settings and change them again. It seems like there should be a saved setting that does not change.

I tried this on two different computers and it can't even do 30 FPS! 15 FPS is the maximum, so the video stutters. Every other webcam at this price, heck even at under half the price, can do 30 FPS.
