I have been looking for a replacement for my old Z5300 system as it is more than 10 years old now, and I find it really outdated. In addition, as my old speaker set does not have any other connectors than analog, it is highly dependent on a computer connection in order to be able to produce accurate 5.1 channel playback from dvd and blue-ray digital sources. As I have several digital sources around, I thought this new toy would substitute the pc and will process all digital audio directly. At this point the new Z906 does not fail at all, however people that plan to use it as a centralized audio system should have some in mind.First of all let me clarify that I have carefully read the user guides of all audio sources at home before making the purchase, because I have found that users report the z906 is unable to decode 5.1 and 7.1 Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus signals and plays only 2.1 stereo. I came to the conclusion that people are often mislead and fail to understand some basics of what signal is transferred from their sources to the z906. This misunderstanding will lead to unsatisfactory results with any other audio system, so I think it is worth sharing here as well.MISS CONCEPT 1 - Optical SPDIF / TOSLINK always transfers surround sound, so if you connect two devices via optical cable you must expect surround sound.Terribly wrong - optical connection is just another cable that transfers the audio content from the source to the output system. If the content does not have 5.1 or 7.1 audio streams encoded into it, the optical connection does not 'expand' it, unless the source system (computer, tv, dvd/blue ray device) is capable of digitally expanding it. So if you expect that playing your favorite cd or mp3 will become 5.1 surround because of the optical connection - forget about it.And in this aspect feature no 1 of the z906 comes handy. The system is capable to expand 2 channel audio accross all the 5 speakers, which makes possible listening music to all 5 speakers. In reference to my old z5300, the overall quality is much improved from all satellite speakers, and the bass is much softer, with more attack. Z5300 is too boomy, and the bass it produces lacks attack so it sounds a bit too heavy.MISS CONCEPT 2 - These speakers are unable to handle 7.1 Dolby Digital Plus content. This belief is partly true, but it is due to some misunderstanding of the Dolby codec. The truth is that Dolby Digital Plus is fully compatible with Dolby Digital, it just carries 2 more streams. These two streams usually are sent to middle speakers left and right when the content is played out via 7.1 audio system. As Z906 is 5.1 system it is just unable to output the remaining two streams to the correct speakers. For those that want to have a realistic, correct output of all 7 audio channels, the Z906 IS NOT the right choice, so they better get some 7.1 surround system instead.MISS CONCEPT 3 - I have all my digital devices connected to my tv via HDMI and I have connected my tv with the Z906 via the toslink, but Z906 is unable to play the 5.1 audio.WRONG, SO WRONG - HDMI supports 7.1 audio transfer from source to target, and this is true, so your TV receives 7.1 audio for sure. However, most TVs DO NOT bypass the HDMI audio directly to the optical out. Instead they downmix it to 2 audio streams and send it to the optical out. Some TV's have a setting in their menu that controls the SPDIF output, whether it should output surround sound or stereo, however this setting controls how multi-channel audio streams of TV broadcast is transferred to external audio. You should carefully read the user manual of your inter-connected devices in order to correctly understand their output capabilities. My experience so far shows that most devices DO NOT pass HDMI audio directly to the optical out. Instead they downmix to stereo, so you have to plan your connections ahead. Here I find one good point for Z906 and one bad.The good point is that Z906 allows for connection up to 6 audio sources, so you can have at least 3 SPDIF capable devices connected to it, so you will be able to play the multi-channel content on it.The bad point is - there's no HDMI in / out ports, which means you cannot use the Z906 as audio hub and connect all HDMI devices to it(e.g. dvd, game console, etc) and connect the z906 to your tv. If you want to do this kind of connection - go and search for a different system.Bear in mind though, that the Z906 is a targeted versatile PC speaker platform, so it is primarily supposed to work with a PC, rather than like a stand-alone home theater system, so I guess it is some sort of excuse for the lack of HDMI in / out ports.Bearing all of the above in mind, I have connected a TV and a Bluray to the Z906 via optical cables, and a PC via the coaxial SPDIF and I am more than satisfied from the results. When I am watching a blue ray dvd - I have 5.1 surround sound with exceptional quality. When watching TV in most cases I use the matrix 3d

I just love my Logitech Z906 to death. Well with the subwoofer I guess as it died way too fast and too easy compared to the Logitech Z-5500 it replaced under warranty. I tried to get another Z-5500 to no avail sigh. But the picture got much better however as I replaced my Z906 sub with a Z-5500 sub!Simply unscrew the Z906 plate off the subwoofer box, attach the Z906 sub wire to the Z-5500 sub, center the metal plate, and drill holes and add screws. A perfect match with about a half inch slot on either side of the metal plate which is great heat for venting.I love this Z906/Z-5500 hybrid. Buy this and attach your old Z-5500 sub and you got your favorite toy back!I run my Z906/Z-5500 hybrid on monster thx certified optical cables off my computer video card and also 32" LG LH40 optical pass through with 5.1. The sound it adds to my system is intense. In fact it made this lifetime RUSH fan quit buying their mdvds under a boycott protest. The Time Machine DVD has a new security feature out of this world designed by ufos which disables my hdmi audio return to play in 5.1 even if I have sufficient 3D upconversion. I had to choose between my Logitech 5.1 hybrid and the new RUSH mdvds when all I do is collect mdvd concerts. The Logitech won! I still have every other RUSH mdvd made however. The Z906 sound is simply smooth and rich better than any has given it credit like it deserves. I may have a nice sound system but I still want and need my Logitech so badly I do not play Time Machine mdvd and I have been to over 20 RUSH concerts too by the way. The reason is Snakes and Arrows is vastly superior in every way and I have my 500 watts rms thx certified Logtech 5.1 to add to my Home theater.I have an Onkyo TX-NR808 a/v receiver/3D upconverter THX2 Select Certified sound with lossless codecs connected by hdmi to my 32" LG LH40 I use as a computer second screen. I originally added it to up my cable 720p broadacst up to 1080p so watching the tv would not blind me. Resolution is comfortable viewing distance and 1080p is twice the resolution of 720p to the Onkyo made my HDTV compatable as as HTPC (home theater pc)as a second screen HDTV.I added the premier new version of the BIC Acoustech speaker line. I have two BIC PL-89 speakers and two BIC Acoustec PL-200 subwoofers and a BIC Acoustech Pl-28 center along with six Logitech Z-5500 satellite speakers in 7.2. The reason why the number count is high for a 7.2 is that the TX-NR808 gives two extra left right speaker pairs. One extra pair is high left/right and the other is far left/right.I can bury the volume at 99 with no distortion on many music dvds. Each BIC speaker is rated at 119 decibels. I still keep the Logitech on at half volume because it adds so much to the main surround sounds. The Z906 has a crappy subwoofer compared to the Z-5500 no doubt. But the Z906 satellites are first class and if you have a Z-5500 subwoofer to add to it you are in heaven. Wake up Logitech and bring back the Z-5500 subwoofer already you blind suicidal maniacs! The biggest problem I have with the Z906 besides the crappy subwoofer is that it sometimes refuses to switch input sources very well between my computer video card and my 32" Lg LH40 optical audio pass through. It is missed when it quits playing for no reason for a day or so. However I constantly switch between using the LG as a HDTV and using it as a second screen which is hard on the system so much I have to restart my computer to keep it's sound working or even reinstall the sound drivers a few times a month. My video card up converts to 3D just like the Onkyo and Logitech does so I get great 3D up conversion. I have a Gigabyte GTX 470 Super Overclocked Edition video card with 12 phase power and with 320 bits interface and 1.28 gigs memory. The Gigabyte feeds the Onkyo which feeds the LG HDTV which passes the optical audio to the Logitech Z906/Z-5500 hybrid. The combined effect is astounding and I give a hats off salute to Logitech. The 3D upconversion is first class even compared to my Z-5500 satellite speakers running off the Onkyo. The Logitech speakers only pale in comparison to the super 6.5" horn in the BIC Acoustech Pl-28 and Pl-89 speakers and are great for surround sound. The Z906 may not be a rocker until you blow the subwoofer, achoo, then it cranks full volume no sweat unless you add a Z-5500 subwoofer. Keep the volume way down to 50% or the Z906 subwoofer will die, achoo! The only better logitech combo is a logitech Z-2300 with Z-5500 satellite speakers which are bullet proof! I do not even add external cooling fans to the heatsinks on my two Z-2300s with four Z-5500 satellites run off a single controller with a vga split. The Z-2300/Z-5500 hybrid is totally bullet proof and actually prefers 70% volume over the 50% standard max. That is twice I told you to wake up Logitech and recognize your mistake and come take back the market for those with HTPCs.The two optical digital inputs are perfect on t

Seven or eight years ago, I bought the predecessor to this system, the Z-5500, and it turned out to be one of the great bargains of my tech buying life. Everything else in my life has changed, but there sits the Z-5500 on my wife's desk pumping out decent surround sound and experience enhancing subwoofs. And now into the house comes its successor, the Z-906 with just about the same quality of sound--very good for the money--and yet my major impression is disappointment as Logitech missed the opportunity to modernize the system and instead made this release about cutting manufacturing costs and losing functionality. So, as unfair as it might be to the Z-906, this review has to be in comparison to what came before, as what came before shows what was possible in a desktop surround system.I should define the category this system falls in. It is a surround system for the desktop, usually meant to be attached to a personal computer, and as one adds components--Blu-Ray players, Roku boxes, AppleTVs--they attach with a DVI cable to a shared monitor and a separate audio cable to this speaker system. Ideally, you would fill up the three digital connectors first, the ones with potential for surround sound, and leave the analog inputs for simple stereo devices like iPods. This is not a proper home theatre receiver which would become the hub of both audio and video by taking multiple HDMI cables in and a single HDMI cable out to a television. Because of the lack of HDMI, there is no chance for decoding the advanced codecs found on Blu-Ray disks or handling uncompressed digital audio with more than 2 channels. (Well I guess you could use a specialized PC sound card to use the included 6 channel analog cable to allow your PC to do this decoding, so there is a chance for desktop computer users.) As such, this device is in a very narrow category, a major step up from the typical desktop speakers thrown in with computers, but not able to compete in a feature race with home theatre systems the consumer can cobble together or get as a home theatre in a box system. An example of the need for HDMI support came up this week. I'm taking delivery of a Roku 2 XS streaming media player. It has no optical output, just HDMI and analog stereo. I'll have to purchase a rather pricey HDMI switch, like this one, with TOSLink output to compensate, which will further complicate my system and make it less reliable when switching between devices, as well as being another power sink.Setup is quick for anyone familiar with where surround speakers go. The rear speaker cables are very long to allow circuitous routes along walls and under couches. Everything plugs into the subwoofer including the inputs. This is a bit of a downgrade from the Z-5500 where the inputs plugged into the desktop control unit, so when I put the Z-906 in the Z-5500's place I had to find longer optical cables to reach all the way down to the subwoofer. At least there are two optical (TOSLink) ports, a welcome addition from the one optical port in its predecessor.Sound is quite good. Not spectacular or showy. If the THX label means anything it means you are given an accurate experience of what the artist intended, not overly boomy or processed. Some may complain that the subwoofer is smaller than the one in the Z-5500, and that it will not shake the room as much at full power but that is the least of my complaints, I never turn a speaker system all the way up and don't enjoy being inundated by sound just shy of painfully loud. There is a "3D" mode which at least gets some 2 channel sound into the center channel, which makes me happy while watching most Netflix content. The speaker hardware is better than OK. I've been listening to some piano jazz with them, and the sound is clean and crisp. I much prefer the appearance of the new speakers to the old, too; the metal grills look nice, and while the speakers no longer have integrated mounting brackets, I always thought the old brackets were eye sores. So, I'm fine with the new speakers just having standard 1/4" 20 threads per inch mounting holes. You can leave them sitting on the desk or mount them to the walls with a few dollars spent at the hardware store and a bit of creativity. I ordered a pair of pre-made mounts, but that is hardly mandatory. One issue I am concerned about is that the speakers have 4 Ohms of impedance, which is a bit hot (high amperage), and will limit my ability to reuse them in other configurations in the future. For example, my Denon home theatre receiver supports a recommended impedance range of 6-16 Ohms. As I already have a nice center channel speaker mounted over my TV, I set aside the included center; the third party speaker (an Aperion 4C) has an 8 Ohm impedance, but seems to work fine, I'll just play with the levels from the control unit--and, yes, this likely ruins the THX balance. The subwoofer seems more cheaply made than its predecessor and lacks the large heat sink which dominated its back. I take it to heart to give honest reviews and what/how my expectations are met. The Z906 met my expectations in the sound quality and power areas, but left quite a bit in the appearance/functionality. I will break them down quickly for you to make your own final opinion. The power of the system was great for a small home theater. Walls shook, floors vibrated, and it was loud enough to not turn it all the way up to be totally immersed. The bass kicked out plenty (being able to tune it more would be a bonus based on room sizing or position). The speakers stayed clear even cranked up.Sound quality matches the power aspect above as I led into. I hooked a few devices in via optical and RCA with great results. All were clear and I was easily able to adjust the effects for different results. Now the appearance and overall functionality.First I will start with the packaging. Smartly organized and a great look. The speakers were neatly laid out and packed under the remote. Each cable was there, 3 short and 2 long. I wish they had been labeled or grouped together, but it was easy to work out once opening. The subwoofer was in it's own internal box with a nice handle to remove it.The remote was terribly disappointing in feel and simplicity. I appreciate not too many buttons and making things easy, but the cheap plastic is waiting to crack. The buttons feel like they may pop in and get stuck or break.Setup was a matter of minutes running the necessary wires and connecting the DVD player to test. The subwoofer must sit within a few feet of the controller with the cable that connects them. So no way to place it well into a corner for maximum sound. Not to mention every component connects to the back of the sub, not the controller. Long cables would have been needed. Otherwise the subwoofer was of good weight and quality and looked sleek. I was happy with that. More connection possibilities would have been wanted on the back panel. Each speaker was well made and look great. No external power needs, just the cable that runs to the subwoofer. The single standard mount point makes it dead simple to buy any wall or stand to put them on. They all have rubber strips underneath to stand them on a table or media center as well. The control unit was a mixed feeling. It was easy to operate and even the kids jumped right in to change settings. The look was a bit cheap, but the amber lights were well lit to show what setting was in use and then faded out after a few seconds of adjusting to save ambient light. That was greatly appreciated. However the short cable to connect to the subwoofer and the type of plastic they used made it look a bit cheap. It is a dull grey and could have used something to step it up a bit.The speaker wire provided was standard 18 gauge. This allows you to easily get longer cables for large rooms. I wish they had included at least 1 optical audio cable. This would immediately add value and I know those are not expensive cables to include with the pricing on Amazon for one. Tripp Lite A102-02M Digital Optical Audio Cable with 2 Toslink connectors - 2M (6ft) as an example. Search for more options. So overall I am pleased with it and think they did a good job of entering into a market with a simple to use, set up and affordable theater sound system. They missed out on a few look and quality areas, maybe to save costs, but that would have made this toward all 5 stars. Well worth the cost if you are looking to enter into such a system without breaking the bank for your first or additional smaller system.UPDATE ON Nov 20, 2011: Well it seems to have died. The control unit now has two of the lights that always stay on. The remote or power button turn it off but then it pops right back on in under a minute with the same two lights. Nothing in the plastic control unit (I discussed above) works anymore. The dials spin but make no change. The buttons click but make no change. Of course this is the only want to get any usage out of the entire thing in through the plastic control unit that plugs into the subwoofer. So back in the box i goes.

Key Feature: the Logitech Z906 speaker system controller has a standard headphone mini jack on the right side. When we plug-in head phones, the system switches-off external speakers. The volume nob will then control sound level to the headphones. I use a 9 foot extension cord for the headphones (for those late-night action movies when everyone else in the house is asleep).I was hesitant about getting this system until I read in another review that we can plug-in headphones. The sub-woofer delivers rich deep sound, which we can hear and feel in games and movies. But you can turn-it down for apartments. The Logitech controller has a selector for separate volume adjustment (up or down) on each part of the 5.1 system. The high-range speakers are crisp.I am very pleased with these speakers and I do shop carefully for high quality sound. Although the discriminating high-end audiophile probably would not be satisfied (yet) with the Logitech speaker system. (Maybe we will see powered speakers to meet high end audio rivals in future.)What I love about the Logitech powered speakers is, we no longer need the receiver. We just plug into the television and simply use the relatively small speaker control box for volume adjustment (including adjustments to individual parts of the 5.1 surround). Our Logitech Z906 speakers are connected to a Sony Bravia 46-inch LCD HD television with a single optical cable. All our home theater devices (Apple TV, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, cable television DVR) are connected directly to the television, not the speakers. We use the television as the device input selector.I was very happy to replace our big heavy Yamaha receiver and Bose speakers with the Logitech powered speakers. Sound from the Yamaha / Bose combination was beautiful, but it was only a stereo system, not surround sound. And it was time to move-on to a simpler set-up with fewer wires. Since televisions are no longer just the video monitor and we now use it as the device selector, we no longer need an external "stereo receiver" to switch input devices. I don't know why powered speakers still have not hit main stream. I still see most speaker systems requiring a receiver to power them. For me the receiver is an extra box not needed and the Logitech 5.1 speaker system proves it - big time!

I've always had preferred to connect my DVD directly to the speakers without a AV receiver. This is simple and requires less space for equipments. In Europe I had a DVD player with Dolby Digital and DTS buit-in decoders. Then you only need amplified speakers. Left them in Europe :(Finally I find a replacement for the old but exceptional amplified home theatre speakers. My old system, were Home Arena 5.1 Speakers (Terratec).Although the Logitech Z906 are THX certified I can't say that they are significantly better than my old Home Arena that cost me $180, and this Z906 cost $350.This to say that I found these speakers pricier: they should cost at maximum $250. So I would recommend you to find them at a lower price. You will love them, but $350 is over what they deliver. One important minor of these speakers is that there is no individual volume adjustments, neither bass control. For my old Home Arena you have bass, Center, Front and Surround independent volume control.Regarding the size of the bass, I don't see the need for a bigger sub-woofer: this one is udge! but only goes down to 35Hz. Home Arena would go to 20Hz!Sound is great, though. Perfect to Home Cinema (THX certified). The bass is strong and will make your house to tremble. Sure! The overall 500W power is not a big deal. But the sound is always good even when you and to listen to a movie with very low volume, although voices may start to be lower compared to the sub-woofer.PROS:-built-in DD & DTS decoder with amplifier!-no need for AV receiver-sound quality: perfect for movies (you will have that "cinema" theatre similar sound);-5 inputs, 2 opticalCONS:-no independent speaker volume control--ugly computer look speakers-no 2-way speakers --> sound quality is not that good (for the money you should expect more)-price

We use this sound system for the living room. The acoustics in our living room make it very hard to hear the TV from the front of the room if anyone is talking near you. These speakers solve this problem! They have great sound and we loved hearing the arrows whizzing by our heads when watching Game of Thrones! The only downside is that now I don't want to watch movies and shows without surround sound :( lol. The sound quality is great and we can almost "feel" the sound with the subwoofer. We also used it for two parties to play music on. We used to hook up a laptop to the TV to play music, this is WAY better! We bought some wallmounts to go with it (http://www.amazon.com/VideoSecu-Deluxe-Speaker-Brackets-Ceilings/dp/B001QNBUA4/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1364401582&sr=8-3&keywords=speaker+wall+mount), some extra speaker wire from radio shack, and some wire clips to organize the wires (http://www.amazon.com/RCA-AH12N-Speaker-Wire-Clips/dp/B003GSLEJY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1364401965&sr=8-1&keywords=wire+clips). The wall mounts and speaker wires were good, the clips were weak. I'm still waiting it out, but most a good amount of the clips came off or fell out of the walls, floor already. I'd look for something else, if you can. Before we used the wallmounts, being afraid to make holes in the wall, we tried using those No-damage command strips to put them up. Definitely do NOT try this. The sides are rounded, so we didn't get a good seal. They fell down from the ceiling straight on hardwood floor after 2 days (props to command for even holding them up that long!). They still work fine and we've noticed no issues.

I had a Cambridge Soundworks Megaworks 510D for about 10 years now, and it finally gave out (amp/receiver/sub won't power up). I had used that system both for 4.1 music (in office/living room), 5.1 movies (in living room), and as a 2.1 PA system for music in a approximately 30x30 wooden floor dance area. That system had great quality, filled each of the areas use with clear treble and booming bass.My goal was to replace this system with something of equal quality. I tried out the Sony MHCEC909iP Mini Hi-Fi Shelf System, Logitech Surround Sound Speaker System Z906 (980-000467), and the Logitech THX-Certified Speaker System Z623. The 906 is the best system out of these 3, hands down, for all the above applications. The 906 has the best clarity out of these systems and at only 40% volume makes my floor vibrate with the bass. This system seems better than the 510D that it replaced, but I cannot do a side by side comparison as the 510D no longer works. Rating the other systems in order, I'd say the 623 is better than the Sony. I am primarily basing this on their quality for music in 2.1 modes and the distance they can throw sound. Additionally I viewed a number of Blu-ray movies in 5.1 mode on the 906 and it was quite amazing.6 inputs (the 5 advertised on the sub + 1 auxiliary on the control unit) let me hook up all my devices at once, which is a HUGE bonus to me. I have (on the sub) a X360 and PS3 each hooked up via the 2 opticals, TV out to the SPDIF (Digital RCA), an HTPC via 3x 1/8in, an airport express for airtunes via 2x RCA; and (on the control unit) an auxiliary cable for laptops/ipods. Each input remembers its "effects" setting -- you can choose 3D for 5.1 sources or to "upchannel" lesser sources into 5.1 (C gets a FL/FR mix, RL/RR get a LPF of FL/FR); the 4.1 setting will take a 2.1 source and map FL/FR to RL/RR (good for music); and the 2.1 setting is for no-upchanneling.As a note: the PS3 and X360 both turn on and off their optical output while in XMB/Dashboard, so some of the sounds get clipped on this system. The system's optical inputs seem to take a moment to "warm up" when a signal is supplied -- since these devices do not supply a constant signal, the beginning of sounds get clipped. During gameplay or movies, a constant signal is provided and is not a problem. I suspect this is a sort of safety feature to prevent audio popping. I have not tried optical inputs/outputs using any other devices, only ever used analog before. Maybe this is normal behavior for this type of connection. The remote is small and plastic, but doesn't feel cheap to me; felt very light without the batteries in, it felt better with the batteries. The control unit feels solid to me. The amp/receiver/sub unit is a bit heavier than it looks. The satellite speakers are definitely heavier than they look; they're also quite sturdy -- as one fell off of the stand I had and it damaged the floor and not itself (hardwood floor) [it still sounded fine, no rattles or hisses or dampening].I don't know how this unit compares to the 5500. I have listened to a 2300 fairly often at work and the 906 seems a bit clearer. Both have room shaking bass.I am going to purchase Atlantic Satellite 77305018 2 Speaker Stands (Black) to go with this system, I will attempt to edit this post or post a review there detailing if they're any good with this system. Edit/Update: The stands are compatible and work great. While I would believe that a dedicated Amp/Receiver and a multi-thousand dollar system could outperform this system, I believe that this system is sufficient for most people not attempting to fill a large hall with sound.

Since I took my Philips AS351/37 Fidelio Docking Speaker for Android to the TV room, I decided to suck it up and get something decent for my workshop that would play my favorite XM Internet, Pandora and Amazon Cloud music streams. B-I-N-G-O!This unit sounds fantastic. I'm a classic rock fan and I'm hearing tones on these speakers that I never knew were in the songs. I mean, I'm talking all the way back to The Doors and Zeppelin. I consider myself to be no audiophile but, like a lot of folks my age I've listened to these songs over and over for 40 years and they've never sounded better to me.Speaker placement definitely affects sound quality. The satellites sound noticeably better pointed directly at the listener, so I mounted them right at ear-level around the shop by mounting 4" x 3/4" wood braces to the 1/4" X 20 inserts (in the back of each speaker) on one end and free-hanging them by the top hole of the bracket on a nail so each one can be individually pointed (tipped, leaned) right or left at yours truly, depending on the part of the shop I am in. This really helps with the upper frequencies most. The instructions state that placing the woofer near a wall generates more bass but it should be at least about 6" away. I concur. In fact I placed it first on the bottom shelf on one of those Gorilla Rack GR2102B 5-Feet Workbench with 2 Drawers, Black, but Woaa! Too much, vibrated the wall so much it made the bench on this side and the room on the other side of the wall one big resonating chamber. So I took it off the shelf and put it on the concrete in a corner slot that existed between my Craftsman 9-65348 Chest Top 7 Drawer 40-Inch Red Toolbox with Black Drawers and the aforementioned workbench. Still not perfect. So I rolled the cabinet a bit farther away, put the boom box a couple feet from one wall, about 8-10" from the other wall and turned the entire box 90-degrees so the air tunnel faced me and the speaker itself toward the cabinet (instead of toward me or a wall.) Making progress! It seemed to sound better on the packing box off the concrete floor (I just had to plug everything in and fire it up when I unboxed it) so I put the packaging back together - used the interior box as well as the thick double-wall exterior box for stiffness, taped them shut just as they shipped. I used this makeshift cardboard assembly as a square pedestal on which to set the subwoofer, to test the theory I has stumbled upon earlier of course.Sounded excellent, no equalizer, sound card, nothing. In fact, if I feel ambitious down the road I just may build a wooden pedestal to replace that makeshift cardboard setup, but it sounds so good this way I may not even bother.Spent the rest of the weekend merrily rocking-out, pretty sure you will too. One thing I did notice is that the sound improves as the unit warms up. I read somewhere that it's predecessor improved as it became broken-in with use. That may be the case because I found it very, very hard to shut down this evening but that just may have been me having more and more fun with my new Z906 system ...

After testing it in a variety of uses, I'm not sure what the Logitech Z906 speaker system is trying to be. Is it a cheap entry-level home theater speaker system with integrated amp? Or is it a high-end computer speaker system? It doesn't seem to fit comfortably in either role, and it's a quirky product in other ways, too, the result of a bunch of strange design decisions. For instance, the system has a lot of inputs, but only provides a single stereo pair of the most common kind of home-theater audio interconnect -- RCA plugs -- while it devotes a lot of panel space to analog input in a strange computer-sound-card format, consisting of three eighth-inch female headphone plugs. The unit also comes with cables for this sound-card use, but no RCA cables or optical cables for the other inputs. These weird choices make it seem like it's really meant as a desktop-computer speaker system (for people with sound cards, partying like it's still 1994). But then the unit lacks any USB inputs, the most common interface for modern computers; nor does it have an iPod dock connector, or any other easy means of feeding in the digital music that users are most likely to have on hand. On the other hand, it's a "THX-certified" 5.1 system with a (terrible, cheapo) remote control, which makes it seem targeted at home-theater use. But then, while it has a strange little "control pod" connected to it by a huge proprietary cable, all the inputs *and* all the speakers still must be connected directly to the subwoofer (which is, presumably, where the unit's amp is hidden). This imposes drastic limits on positioning and cable routing, making it a bad choice for many home-theater uses.So what use is the Z906 actually meant for? It seems like it's limited in interest to video gamers and dorm-room DVD players. The feeling of cheapness and confusion is enhanced by the poor unboxing and setup experience -- the product is easily damaged in the box, despite being wrapped in vast layers of trashy plastic and cardboard. And the cheapness of some of its parts sits poorly with the heavy, solid, apparently good quality of the satellite speakers. The subwoofer enclosure does not seem too solidly built, as these things go, but the equally important control pod is made of the cheapest plastic. But of course, you really buy speakers to hear them, not to feel their packaging. And the sound quality of the Z906 is nice enough -- though it is heavy on oompa-loompa bass and overbright treble with a gaping hole in the midrange, fairly typical of a subwoofer/satellite setup, and the bass needs to be adjusted way down from the factory settings. For a cheaper computer-oriented system, this level of speaker quality would be a strong point, but the sound is really nothing special considering the high price point, where it competes with entry-level speakers and systems from better audio companies. There's nothing especially wrong with the Z906, indeed it's pleasant-sounding enough; but for this kind of money, most buyers will be better off with a speaker and amp designed for a single purpose. I'd recommend choosing either audiophile computer speakers or an entry-level home theater system from a traditional audio or speaker company -- with any of these, you'll get much better sound for about the same price, and without any of this unit's oddball design flaws.

Amazing sound system. I precisely put every speaker in every corner of the room for theater like experience and "Oh! Boy ... These are amazing".Wiring is simple and easy, except for wire clutters. Has total of 6 inputs ... 1) For Computer ... 2) R/L Stereo ... 3) Optical 4) Optical 5) Digital 6) AuxI am feeding Optical Inputs from DVR and Apple TV + Digital input from my TV. That's all you need for superior sound quality. OR, you could just connect Digital cable straight from your TV Digital output and not have to worry about changing channel every now and then but I had two extra Optical Cables, so I went ahead and connected them.Pros:Great Product for the price. Similar "Hi-End" system will cost at least $600.00+. Example, Bose Acoustimass 6 Home Entertainment Speaker System.Cons:Wish there was a way to increase or reduce Bass manually, but there isn't.If Logitech could add auto channel scan for inputs and stay on that channel until manual override, it could make life much simpler for others who do not know what channel is hooked to what system. For instance, if PS3 is powered up and DVR &&& Apple TV is turned off, it should be able to scan for next channel and switch to PS3 sound automatically. If more than one system is turned on at the same time, glow two channel LEDs and let user choose what channel they want to listen to rather than toggle between 6 different channels to find the right one turned on.Gets 5 stars no matter what. My Cons are visionary; does not apply to every audience. I couldn't think of anything else for the Cons so went ahead and added my own stuff. Nonetheless, product is highly recommended.

Okay..for all the people hating on this system, let me break down a few steps so that those can understand how to get the most out of these speakers.First off...they are not $1000+ set of professional grade 5.1 drivers with a standalone Receiver (amp). You get what you pay for. That said, here's what I did to get midgrade sound from these speakers using a PC of course:1. Ditch the included cables---ALL of THEM---garbage quality 18 GA cable and SPDIF cable. Go with 16GA copper (brand doesnt matter, just go with whatever copper) $8... plus optical cable from newegg/amazon $5......$132. Get a couple tweeters from amazon...not too expensive just look for ones with good reviews..got mine for $13...3. Get yourself a good sound card IMPORTANT..I got Creatives xfi titanium fatality for $80 (don't skimp on this).4. Settings settings settings! Play with settings to get the most from your z906 set (keep in mind i got my set with the half off promo sooo i got it for $200)....here's what I did:Immediately since you now have added tweeters connected to front left and right speaker jacks (Don't worry, its perfectly safe), you will notice higher treble, go to treble setting in the sound card software and lower to 4-40% (preference). Now set software to 5.1 in the speakers tab, keep crossover frequency at 80hz, set CMSS 3D tab to 30-40% front with surround or expand setting to Surround, set EAX tab (this will make the speakers shine in music) to theater mode @3-8dB (whatever sounds good for you), go to graphic equalizer tab and select your genre of music (adjust frequencies if you want), go to xfi crystalizer tab and set to 50%+, next go to encoder tab and select DTS or Dolby Digital Live (again your preference) i have DTS. Now using your Creative control for the speakers, hit the LEVEL button...adjust the subwoofer option to your preference, press twice and adjust rear speakers keep them to about 4-5..raise center speaker. Done...adjust above settings for ear preferences. I got tired of seeing bad reviews from inept people who dont quite know how to get the most from their speakers..keep in mind my above settings are for PC use only, the speakers will still sound great with PS3. You may have too much treble with both tweeters for PS3, if this happens simply disconnect one tweeter and you should be fine. I HOPE THIS HELPS MOST..if you are not satisfied, RMA the speakers, get yourself an onky0 receiver ($300+) and a decent set of satelites and sub..this of course will cost you anywhere from $600 on upwards of thousands of dollars so stop complaining. These speakers are bottom of the barrel when it comes to home theater but they can still pack a punch when used correctly.

Product safely arrived in a well-designed boxUsing the sound system for my PC via Creative XFI sound card. Replaced a 12 year old Boston Acoustic 5.1 system. Big improvement! First time I went optical versus analog Wow!First hooked up to an on-board sound "card" via TOSlink optical cable (Amazon Basics)...... great sound even with the Realtek w/ THX surround sound. Then installed a Creative xFI pcie sound card..took a bit of trial and error to get the card and speakers to recognize each other. The sounds seems more detailed than with the on-board option. Remote handles the basic needs well enough.....on off/volume.etc Manual is very basic not any use if you have to troubleshoot. To me worth the price....do not get a 2.1 system if you can afford the z906.------------As others noted below,Do not use the speaker wire provided (very thin gauge)get quality 16 gauge speaker wireOrder a TOSlink cable (Since the Cable connects to the sub woofer unit, the cable length determines/limits whether the sub woofer can be placed)-------Speakers are not heavy (they are not flimsy however) so if you want to wall mount them a mount that is rated for 5lbs is fine....

I'm very happy with these speakers so far. They sound great, and I love the multiple inputs. My Harmony Universal Remote control, commands them perfect. Logitech was even smart enough to add "direct" input IR commands for each input. (Optical 1, Optical 2, Coaxial 1, etc!) The remote control it comes with doesn't have those, but your universal remote can be programmed to utilize them perfectly. This means their is no input mistakes when I change inputs via Harmony. Be sure to search for & buy the 3rd party z906 6 foot extension cable on e-bay if the sub-woofer needs to be placed further away from the controller. (like my setup is). This is a Quality product with just the right amount of features. The ease in which you can adjust the subwoofer level is perfect. I also love how the system automatically fills all four speakers to 3D mode when a normal analog 2 input source is used. Once a digital source is selected you have DTS/Dolby automatically no problem. I have no need for a giant AVR amp in my bedroom so this gets the job done. You don't need HDMI audio in your bedroom, when TOSLINK digital audio get's the job done just fine. You can buy a device to extract TOSLINK audio from your HDMI source if needed. I'm going straight TOSLINK out from my Mac Mini running Windows 8 Media Center though.

Okay the Logitech z905 puts out great sound. I didn't have any problem with product until about 2 weeks ago. The 6 channel analogue surround connection shorts out causing the back speakers to play back a crackling sound. I tested this. Plus the base lost half of its volume or sometimes it wouldn't just play at all. I tested this on my sound card and and the motherboard builtin sound card and i had the saem problem with the base not playing at all. The back audio would play on the built in motherboard, but it's sound was reduced like how the base would be reduced. I then switched to the fiber optic digital audio connection. now this works well for about a week, but then the audio starts to like crack, pop and skip like when you hear audio from a bad vhs tape. This would happen when the decoder box suddenly shuts off and then turns backs on again. This system can't take electrical surges, even small ones. This speaker needs to be recalled until the problems are fixed.

I attached these to my Panasonic Viera plasma TV and then went to the window to see if a thunderstorm was rolling in (which, given the horrible drought we've been having, would have been GREAT news!!). No, by chance I had turned the TV to a documentary on Krakatoa, and the rumblings of the volcano -- which I hadn't noticed up to that point -- sounded like distant thunder through the subwoofer in this set.I have mixed feelings about these speakers. First, they are awesome compared to the built-in speakers on the Viera or, I imagine, any other TV. If you watch much TV, you surely want SOME kind of external speaker system, and these are good. I turned the bass down, but I always do that. These speakers aren't for music. Well, you could use them for music, and they wouldn't be bad, but you could certainly do better. High frequencies (e.g. cymbals) weren't treated well on the songs I played. These speakers are for home theater. The satellite speakers and the center speaker are surprisingly heavy, well-constructed, and good-looking. The controller is this light little thing -- not that that's a problem, it doesn't have a big magnet in it like the speakers do -- that allows you to control which input is active and adjust the volume separately by speaker group. When you tell the controller to do something, these fairly bright orange lights light up, and my first reaction was "AAAK! That's distracting!" But they turn off quickly; I kind of like them now. They show you graphically what you are controlling, making the controller pretty intuitive.Others seem to have a problem with the remote. I think it's fine. It's small and light, but it doesn't feel flimsy to me; it seems perfectly adequate for the job. I would prefer to get my TV remote to control the volume on the speakers, but I don't think that's possible on the Viera. It might be on other TVs, though; that is, the TV's volume control might also control the volume through the audio out jacks. The subwoofer has to be close to the controller and to the TV, which might be a logistical problem for some, but honestly it worked out just fine for me.There are several options for inputs. One is the standard pair of RCA jacks that any decent modern TV would surely have. I was a bit surprised that they didn't include a cable for this, but (like most people, probably) I already had a couple extra. I don't honestly know what you would use some of the other inputs for. There is a trio of connectors which allow you to drive the subwoofer, satellites, and center channel separately, and they do include the cable for that, in case you have an audio source that has the channels split out already. So, hmmm. I think that for home theater use, these speakers are pretty good. Maybe a little on the expensive side, though; I'd be interested in reading a comparison to other, less expensive home theater speaker sets.

All I can say is, WOW.. I've bought MANY speakers before, some surround sound and returned them the very next day. The Z906, hands down are my favorite. They're not only loud, but extremely crisp. There's no static, even when I turn it all the way up... That being at 75% because it's way too loud to dare to go further. My neighbors complain all the time, but I get carried away sometimes. The Pros.Crisp, clean sound with an unimagineably deep bass. You can turn off all your bass if you wish. You can enable, two speakers, four speakers, or obviously all 5 with a simple push of a button.Durable, and not light like some cheap speakers. The Cons.Logitech could have designed the controller a bit better, it's rather old school, but very simple to understand.Remote does indeed feel cheap. When the buttons are pressed, a clicking sound makes it seem flimsy, but other than that, nothing else really. The bottom line...A deffinite buy! I would absolutely reccomend this to everyone. My freinds come over all the time and they just love it.

First let me state my experience: When I first hooked it up I got scared because when I tried playing bass heavy music like the Dragonborn song from Skyrim to test it out it started static-filled almost sounds like it was about to die. I stopped listening and planned to return it in the morning. Since I had nothing to do, I tried playing a movie to see if it can handle it and surprisingly it handled the movie real well. After the movie I tried playing different songs that were bass heavy like "The Show Goes On by Lupe Fiasco" and it sounded smooth from then on. I guess "breaking in" the speakers worked for me here. Now, I'm no audiophile so I wouldn't know how much more you can upgrade the quality of these speakers but I must say, this system has been the best system I've ever owned. The input allowed me to connect my PC and Ps3 with two toslink cables without any hassle and I love all the features that comes with it. If you were an audiophile you may find a thing or two to nitpick about but if you're the average user using these for everyday activities such as gaming (Nba 2k13 was amazing), movies, and music then you just found the system for you. Make sure you do you're research before buying so you know you have the inputs that this system will allow (there were no HDMI input or output but you should know that already). Love it!

Let me preface this by saying, I am not an audiophile. I like big, full sound, but I'm not the sort of person who can hear minute differences nor someone who appreciates speakers that cost as much as my car or sits in the middle of a perfectly modulated room to listen to my favorite tunes.Set-up with our TV, DVD and satellite box took less than 20 minutes and went off without a hitch. The unit can serve up to six devices, but be aware that it doesn't clearly specify what is connected or what kind of sound it's receiving, just lists 1-6 and lights up the speaker icons in use. I was up and running quickly, though be aware cables for most connections are not included. This Logitech system seems very well made, especially for an all-in-one unit. Heavy and well-built, these don't look, or sound, like other cheap "home theater in a box" systems I've seen before. Even at less than half power/volume these were out-puting very loud, rich sound that was distinctly "surround." Movie dialogue sounded crisp and clean and the bass is big enough to create sound effect vibrations. Music too sounded pretty good to me though, again, I'm no audiophile. While I can't imagine using these in a top-of-the-line set-up, the sound from these easily fills a small to mid-sized room and would be perfect for a bedroom (where we tried ours), apartment-size living area, dorm room or office. The remote isn't great. It's small, easy to lose and simplistic (basically just on/off, input and volume up/down), but we have a Logitech Harmony remote and using this speaker system with that took only a few minutes to set up. I'm guessing Logitech assumes most people will use some kind of universal remote to tie all their components together and therefore didn't put a lot of time or money into the included system remote, since most people have a TV, DVD player, set-top box and sound system.Having tried this for just a day, I can't attest to the longevity issues others have reported. I can say it has vastly improved our bedroom TV set-up, which used to consist solely of the TV's built-in speakers. One of my main "issues" with the unit was the odd size of the receiver, making it a bit difficult to incorporate into an equipment stack. It's smaller and thicker than most cable/satellite boxes and DVD players, meaning it will have to go on top, or on it's own, a potential issue for those short on shelf space. It also won't fit into a standard rack without some manipulation. This is a simple system designed for ease-of-use and decent sound. It's a big step up from under 100 all-in-one sets, but still well below using a dedicated home theater receiver to decode your audio and video and out-put to a top-of-the-line 7.1 THX speaker system. On the other hand, the Logitech system is also a fraction of cost of such a set-up.

Actually that's not true, there is one (tiny!) fault - for some reason when using these through my xbox and a toslink cable while sound comes through all 6 speakers, music does not come through the back ones - nor does any non-hd sound. this can be solved by using rca 2 channel cables however.Other than that, these speakers are truly perfect. They arrived on time (ordered monday, arrived thursday). They are monsterously loud - i havent yet dared turn the volume up full - and yet the sound quality remains perfect at all volumes - they are thx certified afterall. they come with 2 12' cables for the rear speakers and 3 8' for the front ones. these cables are attached into the subwoofer which I found a little odd but it actually makes positioning and setup a little easier. The initial setup took about an hour, but that is to be expected.when using the speakers with a games console (like an xbox 360) and a toslink cable, the sound quality is simply amazing. Being shot at has a whole new feel when you cn actually hear the bullet passing your ear, or the breathing of the soldier behind you. It was dead esay to set them uf for xbox, just plug in and turn on dolby 5.1 in the xbox system settings. When I Use these with my tv I use a standard rca 2 channel cable, but the dolby virtual 3d setting on the control unit makes it feel as if its real surround - voices suddenly only come from the front speakers, while ambient noises come from the back ones. With music again there is no fault. you hoear things in songs you never even knew were there. Base-y songs with the sub up loud make the ground shake the the windows vibrate. IT WAS AMAZING. nuff said.As a final note for anyone who wants 5.1 speakers for directional sound while gaming, you MUST have speakers with an optical audio port (like these) - standard rca is not 3d surround!! also you MUST have a toslink cable with it (also called digital audio cable or the mini version (for laptops etc.) is called s/pdif) - without this cable, or a 6 channel coaxial as an alternative, you may as well not buy them. That said i would recommend them even without this cable, although you may be better off with the logitech z506 in that case.So all in all, BUY THEM - they really are amazing!

Firstly I got these as a replacement for a Logitech Z5500 that had a control pod failure. So I have owned and used both systems. Now if you currently have a Z5500 and are thinking that these would be an upgrade, they are not and you should not get these. To go from the Z5500 to the Z906 is pointless unless you have to. They both have similar stats and both sound roughly the same.If you are looking to upgrade to a new set of 5.1 speakers, these are an excellent choice. The satellites sound exactly the same as Z5500. Crisp and clear. Very fluid and a warm sound. Also can get very very loud. They also made them much easier to wall mount by just having a bolt hole in the back of it which is an industry standard. They have removed the cloth covers that the Z5500 had but that is just a personal taste thing. Now when it comes to the sub-woofer, here is where the difference comes into play. The Z5500 has a 10 inch sub, the Z906, an 8 inch sub. You would think that this would cause the system to suffer compared to the Z5500 however this is not the case. The sub-woofer on the Z906 seems to have more of a bass punch to it then the Z5500. While at high volumes however, the Z906 obviously falls prone to being a smaller sub-woofer then Z5500. On bass test tracks it can bottom out or become "farty" before the Z5500 does. So in a sense, it cannot shake up the house/room as much as the Z5500. It still CAN shake up the room and cause things to move however, this still is a powerful sub woofer and sounds better then any PC sub woofer out there. But the plus of this system is the punch it gives at normal listening volume. Another plus is the actual size of the sub woofer box. It is almost half the size of the Z5500. Makes putting the sub and also moving it much easier. Through design they have kept the great sound of the sub woofer and greatly shrunk the size of it.The control pod also is redesigned for the better. Its much smaller, doesn't have a bright LCD screen on it that can be distracting, and doesn't heat up like the Z5500. Another note is that changing the effect mode of the system is much quicker then the Z5500. It happens instantly, the Z5500 would take about 1 full second to change the effect mode. The downsides of the system are as follows. The remote control feels really cheap. The buttons have this plastic "clicky" sound/feel when you press a button. Another is having all the inputs on the sub woofer instead of the control pod. Which means you have to have all your devices within roughly 4 feet of the sub woofer. This was probably changed due to the failure of the control pods but its just a minor complaint. This is an awesome sound system and overall is slightly better then the Z5500 which was already an awesome system. Don't listen to all the people who bought this set expecting to be way better then the Z5500. This is meant to just be newer design. It isn't meant to out perform or out class the Z5500 at all. Worth it if you can get it under $350.

At around $350.00, it is nearly impossible to find a surround sound system rated at 500 watts, and one that sounds like some of the $1000 dollar setups. Well, this is one that matches the high end setups feature for feature. You know that you have something special when you pick up one of the satellite speakers. The weight alone tells you that these little fellows will rattle the windows. The massive 8 inch subwoofer looks like something used to force Manual Noriega to surrender.I used this as a surround system in my office, connected to both the wife's, and my, desktop PCs. The system has 2 separate SPDIF (Optical) inputs. This was the primary reason for my purchase. It also has one Digital Coax input, and 1 regular RCA component input as well as 1 3.5mm micro input. Each id selectable through the buttons on the control pod, or via the IR remote control. The control pod also allows for independant sound control of the subwoofer, the center channel speaker, and the rear speakers, making fine tuning a breeze. This is also possible through the remote control. 3 separate modes are available, True 3D, 4.1 surround, and 2.1 stereo. When connected, setup, and put to use, all I can say is WoooooWWW! It wasn't the volume that impressed me, it was the power. The bass from the sub will shake you to the core. Your entire body quakes with each beat. This sytem sounds every bit as good in my office as does my high end Denon system with my massive 15 inch D-9 Cerwin Vegas in my living room.I couldn't be any more pleased than I am with this purchase. As usual, Amazon provide prompt shipping, great packaging for protection, and a very good product description. I would recommend this to anyone.

Well I made lots of research on affordable 5.1 systems. This Logitech looked like the most suitable speaker system for most regular listeners. I am no audiophile, so I can not comment like an expert. But I can say this: I like what I hear! It's loud, it has lots of bass, and unlike some commenters say; it has enough trebles too. I got oem THX certified radio in my truck, so I kinda knew what I should be expecting. Logitech did not disappoint me.Some say it would be better if it had HDMI ports. Well yes, but none of the affordable systems with HDMI inputs had analog 5.1 input, which I needed. They usually have stereo input for analog connections. Guess what, almost all kinds of players (bluray, dvd or apple tv etc..) have either optical or coaxial out. And this Z906 has all of those inputs. So I haven't had any difficulty connecting my players. I used coaxial port to connect my HDTV, optical to connect my media streamer, and analog 5.1 input to connect my computer. For around $300, I can't imagine any other brand that achieves a performance close to Z906. I am happy with my purchase.
