I bought this to replace a Behringer UCA202. The Behringer performs very well for my use (guitar in a home studio), but recently it's become way too sensitive to interference; I was getting noise from the nearby cable modem / router / network drives. This noise was making its way to my recordings too :-(For what ended up being less than twice the price of the Behringer I decided to try this unit. Not only is it interference-free, it has a much warmer, intimate sound.It's USB powered, installs automatically in about a minute under Win7 with no issues. I did go to the Lexicon website and get their driver, though, just to be on the safe side.REAPER had new entries for the device in the audio settings panel (ASIO! :-) ). Everything just works great, first time. I was even able to remove my little mixer from my entire setup thanks to the zero-latency monitoring on the device :-)Great unit. I love the Behringer, but this thing kicks it in the tail.

OK, as far as basics go, the thing works as you'd expect any product in its class. That's the good news. The bad news - if you are a Mac person using Logic Audio 9, don't expect it to work. I bought this unit highly recommended by a musician friend as a very easy plug and play converter. And if you are using a Mac with at least OSX 10.4, that's what you get with the nifty CoreAudio deal that doesn't require a bunch of drivers. However, you will discover when you invoke it through Logic Audio that you will get a signal nearly non existent, even when it's going into the unit with plenty of strength. I hopped online to see if this was a common issue and sure enough, I saw complaint after complaint by Logic users on that note. I found a ridiculous workaround, and that's recording into Quicktime. The Lexicon Alpha has no problems at all putting out a robust signal that way.I highly recommend to Lexicon, that they need to put some time and thought into the frustrating incompatibilities of their unit with the Logic Audio system. It isn't merely an oversight, seeing as Logic Audio is one of the most, if not the most, professionally used recording and producing systems out there.

I am absolutely in love with this interface. The sound from my mic is clear as day. It does just what it is supposed to do. My favorite part about the product is that it is an input as well as an output. My output jack on my macbook has been messed up for a while, so I'm happy that I don't have to pay to get it fixed. Another pro is that you do not have to plug the lex into a power source. It is powered through the usb. I have not used cubase yet, so im not sure of the compatibilty between the software and my macbook. I have however used the interface with Garage Band and it works great. When your setting up just go under your preferences in GB and set your in/output to lexicon and it will work. I would definitely recommend buying this product!

Is this a professional interface? No. Is it good for creating a crystal clear acoustic album? No. There is a slight hiss on it that is not overbearing like other reviewers said, but just enough to turn me off from wanting to record anything serious on it. I've tried everything to get around it, and i'm using professional grade cables and microphones, but even when the laptop is unplugged from power, and i'm nowhere near anything electrical, I can't get around the hiss. But if you're doing a high energy song with a lot of noise, then chances are you won't even notice it, just use a noise gate for whenever you aren't playing. That being said, this is perfect for getting your ideas down. I've come up with so many songs that I forget the next day, and using this I can wake up at three in the morning, start up my music software (FL Studio), and record whatevers in my mind so I don't forget it. And as a bonus, this comes with its own software for doing just that, though i've never bothered using it. Despite the hiss, its a good solid beginner interface that you can use to get ideas down and do some amateur recording with, as well as throw in your backpack without worrying about it breaking.One last thing, it doesn't supply phantom power. So if you're planning on using a good condenser microphone, you'll have to go with something else.

I'll admit - I don't have the most experience with audio interfaces. I've used some Mboxes before, and one or two from M-Audio, but I needed something cheaper, and also something that would work with Ableton Live (so not an Mbox). I bought it, not quite knowing what to expect, but this thing really shines. It's completely intuitive, and the Lexicon Alpha driver works literally better than any other ASIO driver I've used. It's fantastic, almost flawless (I say almost because once it randomly cut out. But it worked again after unplugging the interface, and it's only happened once, out of many uses). I can pull the latency all the way down to 5ms and it still sounds completely acceptable (no pops, dropouts, etc), which makes live monitoring actually possible, for guitar players, singers, and drummers especially. I'm very happy with this. Also, it looks very purple in the picture - I was worried about that. It is actually fairly professional looking, made of all metal except for the knobs. The jacks are all high quality and the color is actually a fairly dark purple that doesn't look garish or girly. It works beautifully with Ableton Live 8 on my Windows 7 PC, although that is all I've used it with. This is leaps above any laptop soundcard, and actually has a serious use in my home studio. I recommend it.

I use a Macbook OS X 10.6.8, I have a shure SM58, and I bought this interface intending to use it with garageband.Overall, this isn't a horrible interface, however I would not suggest it for recording vocals. The gain is super low, and when raised high this squeaky sound comes out of the monitors, which I wouldn't have minded if it hadn't come up in the recordings. I attempted to plug in an electric guitar, and it came up in that recording as well. The sound prevents it from sounding like a clean, crisp, professional recording. I ended up returning it, and will shell out the extra dollars on a higher quality brand.

We purchased this unit based on the recommendation of a friend who uses it to record commercials for their local AM radio station. We use it to record our daily 30 minute radio broadcast. Our studio has decent mic setup running into a multi-channel mixing board. We used to record directly to CD, however, we now run from the board, thru the Lexicon Alpha and into our computer (1st gen i7 PC laptop, running Win7). Setup was simple and using Audacity software with this unit, it works like a dream! Now we record only program segments and I can go back and add intro, promos, music, and outro later using Audacity. For the price, it can't be beat! For those considering a "pro studio in a box" need to consider the PRICE.

No piece of hardware is perfect, but this little device is really a bomb-proof solution to those who need stereo recording capability with both instrument, microphone and line level inputs (2 input & 2 output). The converters are fantastic (sound at this price level is nearly unbeatable), the mic preamp is quiet and ultra-usable and the feature set is nearly unheard of at the end of the spectrum of products. For $60 (or $70 depending on where you purchase), you get (stereo) balanced TRS inputs and outputs with paralleled rca outpus (unbalanced), an XLR mic input (non-phantom power), 1/4" instrument (guitar) input, direct monitoring (controlled by a mix knob on the front of the interface), switchable stereo/mono input monitoring switch and a 1/8" headphone jack (3.5mm) with very ample power for most any phones really. The included software (Cubase LE) and the Lexicon Pantheon is pretty much a throw-away. Cubase LE is limited to 48 audio tracks and a measely 8 instrument tracks and the included vst Lexicon reverb is tied to the included Cubase LE (namely - it won't work in any other DAW) rendering the entire software package (minus driver) virtually useless. This is especially obnoixous because I'll never know if the Pantheon reverb was any good, which then seems rather silly as you would think a company known for it's reverbs would want as many people as possible to know how they sound. Anyway, small caveat really - you're not buying this for any software so get that out of your head, you're buying this because it's a brilliant little piece of hardware that runs off the usb bus (no external power supply needed) making it effectively very handy as a portable recording mechanism if you do say field recording.The footprint is rather small, and would fit comfortably in a laptop bag. The knobs/controls on the front feel excellent (nothing like the flismy stuff you can "wiggle" and feel as though you're about to break like on some interfaces) and the box could probably easily take a trip down my stairs and still work. This is by far one of the most solid feeling entry level interfaces I've used to date. Clipping the input stage (by overloading a mic for example) suggests that this interface has headroom to spare as it take a lot of clipping before you can actually hear any distortion artifacts coming through. This is in stark contrast to other (supposedly) "good" interfaces I've used where you run out of headroom almost a full decibel below reference 0db (or clip). Likewise, D/A conversion is similarly clean and noise-free, with tons of gain. I really can't say enough good things about this little thing. It's been ultra stable over the past year I've owned it and I've used it on about 3 computers with literally zero hiccups. Great drivers and you can achieve extremely respectable latency through ASIO. It's been used on literally dozen of mix projects I've completed and I couldn't be happier with it's performance across the board.All in all this is an absolutely fantastic product - easily a no-brainer choice at this price range ($60 - $80) for audio interfaces considering the competition.

This review focuses specifically on the Lexicon Alpha under Linux (Ubuntu 12.04) using the Ardour DAW, since there's little on Amazon about using non-Windows DAWs and USB devices, at least on the lower end.The good news is that this little thing works right out of the box. Plug in the USB cable, your instrument to the instrument input or amp/mixer output to the line input, open Ardour and tell JACK to use USB audio and you're ready to record. I'm using the Lexicon Alpha with an Intel Core2 Duo laptop that's about 4 years old and couldn't quite keep up using software monitoring so recording was a pain. Too many xruns or audio lags. Not any more! Nice to have hardware monitoring for recording and I don't notice any delay in the recorded audio. Also, I really like that it's USB bus powered and it comes with a 6' USB cable.What's keeping this from being rated 5 stars are the lack of a 1/4" headphone jack and no phantom power for microphone. It would be nice to have the option to plug it into the wall and provide phantom power to a condenser mic. But, at this price and capability, if you can live without them I would snatch this up.

The hardware works as advertised and is easy to operate. Make sure you have a good microphone to use with it. The Cubase software also works well but the user interface and instructions are more complex that you might wish for. That seems to be a common problem with music recording programs I've seen - heavy reliance on technical jargon that may be unfamiliar to the typical amateur singer/guitarist. This should come with a good "how-to-use" course that helps the user learn the jargon and common applications.

I bought this for use with the DAW Ableton live. I compared many similar cards in the price range and none of them seemed to bring thesort of value that this one dose. The card worked great when hooked up to my monitors. Everything sounded great and when configuredthere was little to know latency. If you want to get into recording this is a cheap and simple solution that offers great quality/ease of use.

Speedy Delivery from seller. Happy with the product, but...This comes with included software, and I have had many issues with the software, I have spent 45mins at a time on the phone to the software company, sending email too, asking questions, and receiving guidance in the installment/ registering process, it has been a hassle and it took me a month to get my small studio up and running and to be happy with the final product (my recording). The Steinberg company were very helpful, their staff are great, but I can't see why it has to be such a long process to register and get codes just to use this, if I had my chance again, I would find a better less complicated set-up. Recommended to pros, and those who know their stuff, NOT recommended to new-b's!

Waste of money. The headphone out was not even a second input so i couldnt cue up tracks. Half the knobs are useless, and the outputs are so random!

I am using it to record my garage band's demo to get us more gigs. I have been a gigging musician for over 20 years. Had it a few days and with in a half hour after opening it, I had two guitar tracks, a bass track, and drums tracks (from garageband) all laid down. Easy to plug in, I am using it with a MacBookPro and garageband. Very quality recordings so far. Like it so far.Edit- Put down some vocals with a cheap shure mic (pg-48) used fx from garageband and got a nice vocal track, easy to layer over harmonies. Still have yet to mic up a drum kit...Still enjoying the product, still amazed at the ease of use. Did try to install software on a PC with Vista, no luck.Edit - Mic'd up a drum kit into a mixer, lined it out to this interface, I then mixed the drum mics with the mixer. You can record the drums as a single track so once they're recorded you can not mix them individually (ie. snare, kick and so on). I do get very quality recordings with it set up this way. I am sure a recording engineer could give me better ideas on how to get more out of it, but as for now, I am very pleased.

HelloI was so excited about this thing when I first saw it , hey look and audio interface with XLR and other stuff for only $60 !I bought this and got it shipped to Kuwait by Aramex , unpacked it , connected it and the world started crashing around me.There was this louuuuud so very loud hiss coming out of the XLR input , I checked everything on my laptop with no solution.Hiss and hiss and very loud hisses and whistles.I couldn't record anything , I use a dynamic K&K Mic , the hiss only goes away when I connect it to the line 2 input in the back , which disconnects the XLR input , but the volume was very low , and when I amplify it by audio software I get loud noise as usual.I ended up throwing this away , and I intend to buy a USB Microphone.So, whatever you are thinking of while looking to this disgusting thing , put it away.

Not very easy to "play" with. You need to be a professional studio one for understanding this. I'm still trying to understand. But....I guess once you understand how to use it, is good.

I had to buy this box to do audio for a video project while my GNX3000 guitar multi-effects processor is in the shop.At $59 the price is right. When I plugged it in to the USB port it showed up in the sound preference pane on the Mac (Leopard OSX) and I selected the alpha for both input and output device. But when I first plugged it in via USB using the same USB cable the D/A quality is not very good at all. It is very hashy or grainy digital edge compared to the GNX's digital to analog conversion. And that's comparing it to a guitar effects processor! I was surprised. Music played over the GNX sounds relaxed, musical, spacious and pleasant. Over the Lexicon Alpha I was getting frantic, blatant, smeared, and tedious. I quickly found myself not wanting to listen and turning it off after a couple minutes. Sigh! I told myself "Let's just get this project done and put this box on the shelf as my backup." I mean the audio wasn't as good as my iPhone playback into the same amp and monitor speakers! It had a distinct digital hash I hadn't heard in many years.I decided to load the Pantheon VST's into a second user account on my Mac where I do all my audio work and recording. For grins I decided to play back a garageband track I had recorded previously. I had to set the Lexicon as the i/o device in Garageband's prefs. Surprise! It sounded fine! What in the world?? I fired up iTunes in this user account and played a variety of store bought and my own recordings. They sounded normal, musical.I quickly logged back into my main user account and played the same songs in iTunes: dreadful! Not distorted per se, just smeared, harsh, and unmusical. Like digital badness I had heard back in the early days of digital gear when things didn't go well. I switched back to my music user account: sounded fine. Then back again to my main account: still awful. OK, what could possibly cause that? Something in the interface has gone wrong, but only in one user account. Must be a software setting. So I went back to the sound control and toggled the input/output by selecting "built in" then the alpha again. Success! Suddenly that digital grain and goop was gone. It must have been confusion about bit rate or sample rate conversion. But resetting it cleared it up.Apart from the quirkiness of the interface, the alpha does function as promised and I'll get my project done. It seems solid enough. Has the inputs and outputs you'd want.

As a music teacher I bought this to educate myself on the possibility of recommending the Lexicon Alpha to my students as a great way to start learning the recording process without breaking an arm and a leg monetarily and I was more than pleased with the results. For the price, it is definitely a great find. You better believe that I already am telling my students to get this if they are interested in learning how to record.If you've got the money, there are definitely better products out there, but for the average musician who wants to start recording at home with a limited budget, this is the way to go. It comes bundled with Cubase LE5 which to be honest I haven't even used yet, but since it is a Light Edition of the popular Cubase 5, I can't imagine it being bad. I have been using the Lexicon Alpha with Reaper, (which I prefer over Cubase) and it has worked great. It worked right out of the box and I haven't had any problems with it yet.My computer is set up to dual boot between Windows and Linux, so I can say with certainty that the Lexicon Alpha works perfectly fine with Ubuntu Studio. I've been using it with Audacity (Linux recording software) and it also passed the test with flying colors. As opposed to Windows, as soon as I hooked it up and rebooted my Linux box, the proper drivers were immediately found, downloaded and installed, all in the blink of an eye, and I didn't do a single thing. Right away I was able to record with it.Again, I'll repeat what I said, buy the Lexicon Alpha and get ready to begin your journey into the world of music recording! You won't regret it.

A very good device for the price. I'm already recording from my electronic keyboard into the computer with a decent quality. Well, there are better ones with superior quality but they cost much more. So for a not professional recordings which still sound good, this device is OK. The only downside I can mention is that I could not install the drivers that come with the package, the installation simply fails midway (this is why I'm giving 4 and not 5 grade). This might be a problem in my laptop though, not sure. But the good news you don't have to install them at all. I use the asio drivers already installed in my computer, so I configured the asio driver (just open the settings and mark 'record from usb' or something like that). And I use the FL Studio as a software, so haven't even tried to install the one that comes with the package. Overall a good device.

This has served me well. It is easy to use and does what it should. Lots of headroom in signal processing. The included recording software is superfluous - included in order to hook one into buying the "full" version or whatnot. I use this with Logic Pro and Garageband, among others, anyway. It's USB-powered, so it's convenient for location recording or just not maxing-out the power strip at home. The specs aren't archival/audiophile-quality, but they're definitely suitable for most home-recording and semi-professional purposes.
