I see a few reviews on here criticizing the Lenovo ThinkVision LT1421 for not displaying full resolution true color video at 60 FPS. Let's be real now. This is a 14" monitor displaying a resolution of 1440 x 900. USB 2.0 just doesn't have the bandwidth necessary to transmit that much data. This should be expected, and is hardly a reasonable criticism. If you want fluid, perfect true color video at 60 FPS, then use a laptop with HDMI out, and spend 10 minutes setting up the cable, A/C adapter, etc.On the other hand, if you're looking for a light, thin, portable second monitor that you can plug into your USB 2.0 equipped computer that will display spreadsheets, presentations, webpages, etc. crisply and clearly, then this device is the best thing you've ever seen. It was designed for travel. I can slip on the protective cover and throw it in my backpack. When I need it, I can pull it out, plug it into a single USB port, (It includes an adapter that draws power from 2 ports, but I've never found that I needed to use it.) and you're on. No monitor base to attach, no bulky AC adapter to lose. Just a standard USB mini cable.I might sound like some sort of shill for Lenovo. If someone from Lenovo is reading this and wants to send me some free merchandise, I wouldn't say no. But I just like when a product is designed well for the purpose for which it was intended. I use this monitor daily when I travel. I DO in fact watch videos on it, but I expect lower resolution and color. The driver (which is automatically installed when you plug it in, no need to carry around an extra disc) does a very nice job of optimizing content to fit within the constraints of USB 2.0 speed, but of course there has to be some compromise. That's a lot of data to push over a relatively small amount of bandwidth. In my dreams, Lenovo will release a USB 3.0 version of this (which would be, of course, backwards compatible with USB 2.0, at reduced performance) and truth be told, they're probably working on it right now. Lenovo is pretty good about not releasing products before they're finished, which is, in my mind, a good thing. Until that's released, this is the best thing out there. There are a few other devices similar to this on the market, but even the ones that boast a USB 3.0 bus can't compare to this one in terms of quality and design. This is a great peripheral to anyone looking for a second utility monitor so they can have a dual-screen solution on the road.

I've been using the Lenovo for 6 months (after purchasing the AOC and returning it for poor picture quality), and it has been invaluable as the second monitor in a dual monitor setup, hooked up to my 15" MacBook Pro. It nearly doubles the real estate.IF USING A MAC, you need to download the driver from here [...]PROS- crisp text and images- anti-glare screen- sleek design, easily slips into my backback along with my laptop. (With the cover on, the monitor is 7/16" thick. The back of the monitor has a small, 4 x 5.5 x 7/16" box attached to it).- 1.8 lbs.- 70" USB cord- adjustable brightness- clever cover design - impossible to come off on its own but easily removable once you know how, see directions below. (You can use the cover as a support base if need be, such as on a soft, lumpy surface, or put the cover aside and just use the built-in, continuously adjustable, sturdy flip stand to save space on your desk).CONS- at maximum brightness the screen is slightly dimmer than the maximum brightness of the MacBook Pro's screen, not a major drawback for my purposes, but a slightly dimmer screen makes for slightly duller colors. A higher brightness setting would greatly compensate for the fact that...- colors are not adjustable. I imagine that color adjustability would jack up the price, though.Rarely am I on the computer when the Lenovo isn't being put to use, most appreciably when I'm using Adobe's design programs and I put all the panel windows on it, freeing up the laptop screen for designing. (TIP: in Adobe I save these configurations as custom 'workspaces". When the Lenovo is disconnected and reconnected, the configurations scramble somewhat, but the workspaces can be instantly restored by going to Window > Workspace > Reset [the workspace name]).REMOVING THE COVERInstructions should be included with the Lenovo. How to easily remove it took some figuring out, the reason why so many who didn't figure it out, I guess, have complained that it's difficult. It isn't: Hold the monitor cover-side up on your lap in landscape view (it doesn't matter which way). Wrap the fingertips of both hands around to the back lip of the upper edge, so your pinkies can feel each end of the lip, and position your thumbs about 3" down. With a speck of elbow grease, pull on the lip toward you while pushing your thumbs in. The cover pops right off.

One thing I've wanted for awhile was dual monitors, but I almost never used my laptop at a desk, so it would have been a bit useless for me. I frequently need to compare 3 or 4 documents side by side for my job and that simply isn't possible/feasible on one screen. However, when I heard about usb powered external monitors I immediately did some research. Though the most expensive of the usb monitors on the market, it was also easily rated the best and seemed the most durable, which was important since I intended to take it with me at most times. The monitor comes with a protective plastic cover that also serves to help it stand up. If you pull the kickstand out and flip the cover over then the kickstand fits into various grooves on the cover. It's fairly versatile and completely adjustable. You can also use the monitor vertically, but the stand is much more finicky and it requires adjusting quite a few settings, so I don't recommend it.I've since had this monitor for close to a week and have used it on a daily basic. The image quality is good and the horizontal viewing angles are superb when compared to my laptop. The vertical viewing angles are mildly more frustrating, because you must have the monitor in nearly the fully upright position in most viewing angles. Lenovo screens, as has been my general experience, continue to be quite nice. The two complaints other reviewers seemed to have the most were that the cover was hard to remove and that the external screen isn't good for videos or gaming. In regard to the first complaint, as long as you know that the cover is relatively difficult to get off when going in, it's not really a problem. If you remove it from the corners, it's not too difficult. And in regard to the other complaint, I have both played multiple videos on the external screen and played very very basic video games (Minecraft, I wouldn't try Skyrim or something) on it. Minecraft ran quite smoothly. Netflix occasionally has some very minor viewing artifacts that I don't really notice unless I'm looking for them. From experimenting with my friends' laptops, the capabilities of the external screen greatly greatly depend on how powerful a laptop you have in the first place. It's extremely easy to set up. As long as you have internet, the drivers will download automatically and all you have to do is agree to the terms of use. The only button on the whole unit is the brightness rocker. The usb cable it comes with is long enough to be of practical use, which is fantastic. Also, it uses micro usb, so you can pretty much use any usb to micro usb cable sitting around (the cable they send has two usb plugs, but at least with my laptop, it only requires one to run.) The cable comes with a velcro tie on it, so you can keep any extra cable length bound up if need be.The short version? I highly recommend this product. I use it daily and have not been disappointed with it in the slightest. It is worth paying the extra money for build quality if nothing else.

Maybe external travel size monitors for laptops have been available for a long time, but I didn't know that. I often do internet searches looking to see if such a thing exists but never found anything. When working in my office I have 2 very large dual monitors. When I travel and try to get work done I get so frustrated at how little I can get done on the road. I would say I'm working at about a 25% of what I can get done on my desktop. Part of that is due to XP on the desktop and frustrating Win7 on the laptop, so it's probably not ALL about the monitor (but most of it is). I searched again a few days days before leaving for a conference and hit on this. I ordered it and picked up from the Fed-ex office on the way to the airport. I opened it and was surprised it is so thin and light it took up virtually no room in my suitcase.Once there I discovered this monitor is amazing! I run a newer Samsung Win 7 laptop and was able to use the single usb plug. There were no hiccups - it worked perfectly as a dual monitor configured separately. I barely know how to use Win7 and had no trouble getting it to work immediately. I'm not running anything like gaming, just run of the mill boring work programs like office and some proprietary software. It was fantastic to be able to view multiple files at the same time and feel like I was actually getting stuff done. If you are like me and need to get work done on the road and you're used to dual monitors in the office I highly recommend this product. Nothing is as efficient as working in the office, but adding this monitor (and a regular mouse)made a significant difference for me.

The Lenovo ThinkVision 14" portable monitor is a wonderful piece of equipment, but has some potential drawbacks. I use a MacBook Pro with Win 7 running in VMware Fusion alongside OSX and wanted some more screen space to use multiple apps at the same time.First, while the item delivered looks like the item displayed here, it is in fact a 1452-DMS. I am not sure what the difference is, but nowhere on the packaging or device does it suggest that it is a LT1421. The second issue is that the instructions, while carefully printed in about 40 languages, are not for this device. Instead, it is a generic sheet that apparently accompanies all Lenovo monitors warning about electrical shock hazard and the other standard CYA disclaimers. At least for me, the driver disk is worthless. I have never had a problem with any WIN 7 program or device functioning with my computer until this one. The loading process is awkward and results in a DOS screen appearing with a series of nonsense commands repeated for several minutes. It does load eventually if you keep after it, but the driver software is anything but user friendly. Once I got the software loaded in Windows, rebooted and plugged in the monitor, all I got was a white screen. The good news is that it only takes one USB port for a MacBook Pro, the bad news is that it did not work.I finally found an online article which provided me with a link to the company that provides the inner circuitry for the monitor, DisplayLink.com. They have up to date drivers for the PC and Mac. The driver for Macs is in Alpha testing for Lion, but it downloaded and worked like a charm with my Snow Leopard. The link is: [...]. I got the link from "Legit Reviews" ([...]) Again, the reference was to the LT1421, but as the drivers worked, I am pleased. The device is very lightweight but as the base it sits on doubles as a cover for the screen, it appears to have a reasonable ruggedness. The only problem I have had to date is when I have multiple high level graphic intensive programs running. There is a distinct lag of several seconds for commands given for a high-graphic load program on the monitor that can result in a build up of commands that get executed all at once. This appears to be a problem related to the additional load on the graphics output of the CPU rather than the monitor as when the monitor is daisy-chained to a Thunderbolt monitor it does not have a noticeable lag.The bottom line is that Lenovo has produce an absolutely wonderful device, but has almost completely dropped the ball on support.

The hardware portion of this product is extremely good. Solid construction, good video quality and the hard cover is easy to slide on an off for protection while traveling. The only suggestion for improvement would be a swiveling or extendable stand so you could use the monitor either in landscape or portrait modes. The cover contains groves to help with support for the stand. No glare issues as I have noted with other manufacturers products of this nature. The setup software is my only complaint. I have both Windows 7 and Windows 8 systems and upon startup in either system the setup software noted that it was not compatible with the operating software. I ended up trying to manually add the hardware and was directed to the manufacturer's website and once it downloaded the drivers (either system) things went smoothly.I had to figure all that out on my own as the printed and PDF setup instructions are very limited and offer no alternatives if you encounter problems like I did. I also later discovered that the software drivers were actually buried deeper in subfolders on the CD which my OS apparently could not access on their own via the setup file since the setup file would not work with Windows 7 or 8.The simple addition of how to access drivers online if one encounters issues with the CD to the setup diagrams would be greatly appreciated. If not for this issue I would have rated the product 5 stars

I'm returning since I bought it as a traveling companion for a Windows 8 Pro Dell 10 tablet.According to Displaylink they support Windows 8, but (at least for the Dell 10) the driver will not work. It gives a "not functional on this operating system" error. That's a shame. I do not need it for Windows 7 (I have other Displaylink type devices for that) and had hopes it would work on the Dell with the updated drivers. I have, up until now, been very happy with Displaylink devices, esp. the new USB 3.0 devices. So, if you are looking for Windows 8 Pro support be warned. Also, it used to be you could see and download the Displaylink beta drivers but I could not find those either on the web site or via Google.Plus: Nice lightweight construction, robust cord with Y adapter, and professional looking. The light weight really does make it a carry companion. It has a slip-on plastic cover for the screen. East to insert in backpack or bag.Negative: No driver for Windows 8 Pro that is reliable or functional in all cases.Double Negative: Very, very difficult to find any help from Lenovo. One would think they would want to support this thing.Suggestion to Displaylink: Get some useful data up on the web site and a reliable way for folks to request assistance. Lenovo is useless it comes to support. Forums are a joke.Suggestion to Lenovo: Support your products.

There are a lot of portable monitors available and some are much cheaper, but I think you get what you pay for in the LT-1421-DS6. There's the well known Lenovo build quality. There's the nice, simple, reliable design and feature set. And then there's the nice out of the box experience as well. Very close to plug and play (drivers download or install from CD).The monitor feels very solid and looks good - subdued - the monitor should be subdued, it's the content we're interested in. And content looks great. The display is fairly bright, the colors are good and text was sharp and clear. Videos were fine, too. Not as good as a top quality monitor or laptop display, but very good. And it's a matte display if that matters to you (and it will for many of you).Operation is simple. Plug the USB cable in to the monitor and your notebook and bingo - you're done. You can see the pixel matrix, the so-called screen door effect others have mentioned, if you put your nose up close and look for it. But at normal viewing distances, it's not an issue at all.The cover seems fine, I did not think it was too hard to get off and put on. It makes a nice base and it protects the screen when in transit. Overall, a good design. Yes, I wish it was priced around 100 bucks, but I am satisfied that I got my money's worth (I bought a "used-like new" one for a bit less). If you need a no muss and no fuss, portable display, then this is a good choice.

I'm an appraiser and prefer working at home/office with big monitors to prepare my reports. I used to use my iPad AirDisplay as a 2nd monitor, the lag was terrible and was desperate for a portable monitor. I often find myself needing to take refuge in nearby Starbucks when I'm waiting in between appointments away from home. I just plug-in the Lenovo into USB and instant plug-n-play. Windows 7 recognize as a 2nd monitor and the native controls (Start+P) work the same way. So it can extend, duplicate, etc. You can turn the screen off by selecting the option "Computer only".I mainly use it to view scanned docs and Google satellite image and honestly its excellent for the everyday use. There is no noticeable lag when zooming on the map and response seems seamless, despite the USB.Texts are crisp, screen has brightness adjustments and it is BRIGHT! I did a short research with similar products, but went with this because it had a better stand and came with a hard cover that seem very professional.

This product performs well for what it's meant to do - provide additional screen real estate when on the road. However, it fails at pretty much everything else. Read on for details.First off, do not buy this product if you plan to use it for anything other than Internet browsing, email, and a presentation here or there. I love Lenovo, but this monitor's quality is pretty crappy. Viewing angle sucks, colors are not too vibrant, color profiles are not supported (don't use this for graphics work), and as other reviewers have pointed out, it has an annoying tendency to garble up when you scroll too fast. Don't even try watching movies on it; I prefer my laptop's built-in 12.5" screen to this one by far. That said, I bought this monitor because I travel a lot for work, and I'm tired of having to constrain myself to a single 12.5" laptop monitor when on the road, as opposed to my two 24" screens in the office. I've found that my productivity increases incredibly when I can see what I'm typing and what I'm basing it off of at the same time. The only things I'll put on this monitor are email and web browsing. For that, it works beautifully. It's light, easy to set up (only one cord to connect), its stand is sturdy and its case is durable. If this is your use case, it's well worth the money.

The Lenovo ThinkVision LT1421 is a fantastically sleek and simple option for the mobile professional or student who wants the convenience and benefits of a second monitor. Setup is a breeze with Windows 7: plug it in using only the provided USB cable (it is a Y-cable, but I only needed to use one USB port), let Windows Update search for the drivers and within 5 minutes you're off to the multitasking races! As has been mentioned in other reviews, this is NOT a multimedia monitor (due mainly to the limitations of the data rates that USB 2.0 can handle). It is, on the other hand, a nice tool to have for working with multiple documents or web pages and for working in groups. Not only will you be the envy of your work/study group due to the Lenovo's slim form factor and satiny black finish, but you won't have to have anyone looking over your shoulder to share your screen (a huge blessing after that second helping of garlic bread, rest assured). The viewing angle and the color reproduction are more than acceptable for a USB-powered monitor and the brightness is surprisingly excellent (a good excuse to wear your sunglasses at night, if you're so inclined). The simple brightness control along with the built-in tilt stand and handy cover/base plate complete what is a fantastic overall package. All in all, the Lenovo ThinkVision LT1421 is great at what it does: provide a beautiful secondary display for multitasking with documents, web pages, etc. When purchased with the proper expectations (ie. gaming and streaming Netflix on this monitor will leave you with a hollow feeling in your wallet) this little monitor is sure to please.EDIT: My previous statements concerning this device's suitability as a multimedia monitor are inaccurate. They were based upon using this device with a modestly designed dual-core laptop setup. I have now also tested it with my quad-core desktop rig and the results are quite different. Streaming Netflix (Apocalypto, specifically) yielded a fine picture with little artifacting and no sound sync issues. Therefore, I would amend my previous review and say that the multimedia capabilities of the Lenovo are more a function of the overall processing power of your CPU rather the limitations of the USB-interface.

I have two monitors at home and miss that setup when I am traveling. This Lenovo product works well because it is about as compact and simple a setup as you could imagine. If you could remove the screen from another Lenovo by cutting the hinges and figure out a way to drive it via a USB cable, you'd have this product. The little foot on the back combined with the plastic cover is a clever way to provide a stand without adding to bulk and weight. My T430s provides enough power via 1 USB port so I do not need to use the yoke cable they provide in addition to the regular USB to mini USB.I originally ordered this product on 8/30 from Lenovo Webstore, which showed the product in stock and shipping in a few days, as I had a Lenovo discount coupon. Lenovo bumped the ship date about 7 times and on 9/30 after emails and calls to Lenovo customer service I gave up and spent just a bit more to get it from an Amazon retailer and received the product in two days. Lenovo does not seem to have a real webstore where they actually know their stock status and can predict ship dates. They seem to just make up dates on their product pages and then run some kind of script every day to bump the dates they have failed to make on orders. The overseas call center people are polite and promise to "check with the supply chain and escalate your order to give it the highest priority", but I'd recommend that you buy any Lenovo product from a reseller rather than direct from Lenovo.

DON'T WASTE YOUR $$. Bought this, worked great for two hours... then I tried sliding it into the case and the LCD snapped. Now it is broken and Lenovo refuses to help me. Even though it was their own cover that caused it to crack. The rep didn't even know what the product was but refused to help. I asked for a manager and was told I would get a call back, that was days ago. I called back again and was told that they did not cover negligence, misuse or abuse and hung up on when I again asked to speak to someone familiar with the product. That rep told me that they didn't make monitors with covers and that I clearly didn't know what I was talking about. The new slide-on cover is supposed to be better than the snap on cover but I'd say you should just stay away. They will not cover the product even though their own cover damaged the LCD. LENOVO tech support is lousy.

The cover issue is not an issue. Just slide it sideways and dont try to pry it open. The video quality is excellent, when working with office tools and web.The graphical performance is dismal. If running flash videos from the web (full screen) I get nothing (black screen)Running "gangnam style" on YouTube works fine, even when upscaling the window - but not in full screen flash.I wanted the monitor to run movies on the side, when working from hotels during travel. However, the performanceis not sufficient to execute DVDs or even videos in lower resolution. I have a 4-core CPU and 8 GB memory. All otherapps shut down. Video runs fine on the laptop, but pauses on the Thinkvision.

This is my first time writing a review. I think it shows I frustrated I am. I purchased this product to use as a second monitor at work, mostly for viewing excel and pdf documents. It is very slim and light, and while it worked, it was great. But it only worked the first three times I used it and then for no explicable reason the screen just stopped working- It was gray and blank and I could not even get my company's IT staff to fix it. Lenovo support call center sent me another "serviceable used" monitor, but that one only worked for a day as well and then started showing a blurry colorful screen. I think the support call center would have been willing to send me another monitor, but I have no trust in this product at this point so I just gave up and requested a refund through amazon just now. I would stay away from this product.
