The koss SB40 was recommended by a forum that was into audiophiling. Most of the people have hardcore expensive equipment, let alone headphones. So when they reviewed the SB40 as a great headphone even thought they have some $300-$500 headphones as well, it peaked my interest.I use these headphone for both listening to MP3's and playing computer games. This is strictly a computer headset for me.I have not tested the microphone, but the opinion on the forum was the microphone is so-so. So out of 1-10 probably a 6.Sound Computer Games:I have a Soundblast x-fi titanium and running on Vista 64. I am also piping my sound via a Logitech z550 via a coax cable so I am listening digital sound.Since Vista 64 does not support EAX sound I am not sure how to rate the overall "surround sound." I have only played warhammer online, Company of heroes, Assassin creed, call of cuty world at wars.From my experience, I do hear directional sound, but people who have my setup who run window XP they claim that they could pinpoint the direction of the sound if they were blindfolded. This is not the case with me.Assasin Creed is a lot more directional than the other games as it is one of the games that uses the alchemy software from creative to compensate for this in Vista.The other games do pipe in some directional sound, but the directional sound is not very accurate. I did buy the new creative wireless FX headset. I did notice a huge improvement in directional sound. Unfortnately I returned them as they were uncomfortable and made a popping noise. For $100 I did not want to deal with them.I bought this headset for the directional sound that the forum claimed it could produced without buying a 5.1 headphone. I believe that these headphones do, infact give you directional sound even in stereo setting if your computer OS is in-line with the computer game/software you are running.MusicAgain through the logitech z550 I set my sound to headset. I can really hear directional sound if the mp3 has intended it to. The sound is more heavier in bass and deeper. The forum said that closed earphone versus open earphone produce more bass and sound deeper sacrificing more of the light airy feeling of music. I have to agree on this. But Over all these headphones for $30-$40 dollars are solid sounding for the consumer who can distinguish cruddy sound but not a total sound nut.Comfortability.This is why I have rated this headset 3 stars. The performance is awesome. It is even more awesome, becasue of the price. The headset does clamp my head a bit too agressively making my temples throb something awful. I have "modded" the tention by pulling it and cursing at it. It still gives me some issues after about hour of nonstop use. I have come to live with it. I bought another headphone from plantronics for about the same price range. They fit like heaven. I think the difference was the pillowy cushioned earmuffs and the non agressive headgear made for the most comfortable headset experience of this price range.I returned those, because I could not get as much directional sound and I am a hardcore FPS game nut.Also I have bought the turtle beach 5.1 headphones, those headphones were also highly agressive on your temples and ears since they too lacked good earmuffs and had a crazy clamp headgear. They only relaxed after I stretched bent and basically broke it. Then they felt just fine.ConclusionIf you are a hardcore FPS nutcake, wanting to save cash, who still want some good sound from your mp3's and willing to "beat up" the headphones so they don't feel like a vice grip, then you are in luck!If you are a hardcore Fps nutcake who wants comfortability--look elsewere unless your head is not as big as mine. If you want good music and game quality you will have to buy 2 headsets. A 5.1 or 7.1 headset dedicated to gaming and one decent stereo headphones. Or else you need to buy an expensive headset with other expensive gear.If you are a music dude who wants to chatty chatty with your buddies, then I recommend a headset with more of a pillowy earmuffs or you got a small head. I don't see how anyone who would enjoy music and do some chatting on the internet would tolerate the vice grip without "beating" them up to relax them.You can go elsewhere for the same price--like plantronics.Again these conclusion are based on Price Range. If I had like another $100 I would get something else but I would have spent $140 not $40. And If I spent $140 I would rather spend $300 to get the headset and gear I wanted. But I only had $40 not $300. So if you have too much money for your own good who likes comfortability look elsewhere.

Koss SB40 Communication Stereophone3.5mm plug8 foot cordI read some customer reviews before buying this headset. Here's my write up with information I did not read in other reviews. Though I have been using the headset for only a few hours I do use online VOIP programs daily. Keep in mind I am picky and have an eye for detail.The Bad:1) No volume control on the headset or headset wire.2) The ear cushions are not removable for cleaning.3) The cloth sling is not removable for easy cleaning.4) The wire attachment is cowboy hat style which may be more likely to catch on things.5) The wire to the right side of the headset (when worn) is a single wire and more likely to bend and break.6) The cable length is listed as 8ft on the box and 9ft on website specification lists.7) The mic boom has up/down play in the swivel where it attaches on the left headset. I'm worried this will cause wear on the wiring and I may put some epoxy around it to secure it tightly.8) I had read that the mic was inadequate in that the volume of the speaker's voice came over at very low volume. This even with the WinXP mic boost selection checked. I also read that someone took the mic apart and found removing the foam insert helped. I found exactly the same thing with one exception. I put the mic back together including the foam. It was packed less tightly because the mic casing was slightly broken from my prying and held together with less pressure by the single small screw. Now my voice volume is normal if not good. Funny how products are these days. I consider this kind of weirdness rather standard anymore.The good:1) The main cord is made of three wires bound side by side which resists bending and hopefully breaking.2) The headset and phones are heavy and appear resistant to normal wear. The weight may be a bad thing for some users.3) I noticed several screws in the headset to hold it together. I prefer screws to click tabs and glue as it allows for easier maintenance.4) My head is large and the headset has a very snug fit. If I bend forward the headset stays securely on my head. I am concerned about long term fatigue from the tight fit.5) While I have used very few headsets these seem to have very good sound. Good base.6) The mic picks up the speaker's voice at a reasonable distance such that it doesn't have to be almost in contact with my lips to pick up my voice well. (see #8 above for necessary modification)7) The earpads cover the entire ear helping to muffle background noise and allowing for a lower volume setting.8) The mic boom arm is a thick cable which bends easily but stays in place once adjusted.Overall I like this item. I do expect to have to be rather careful with it to avoid breaking wires even with the product's sturdy design. Also I'll have to put washable cloth over some parts to avoid dirt build up from wear.

The products are good.The sounds are wonderful and stereo.This earphone looks cool when I take it on.The only disadvantages are too hot after wearing for a long time. It is worthy of the money.

It was comfortable, and a simple plug-n-play. Even the sound quality was fantastic. However, I play video games and use voice chat programs a lot and everyone complains so much that I am not allowed to speak while using this headset. I've tried it on multiple PCs, and it just doesn't have good audio out-put.

"The battery compartment is located in the right ear cup. So with put that in your right hand, then with your left hand press down on the cushions and turn to the left." i get resposne in 3minutes from koss live-support excellent! But they are on left ear cup.I feel extra basses but no vibration :(

I recieved the product in original packaging, tried it out on my computer and found out the sound quality for the mic was bad when used with vent. The headphone quality was ok, but I bought it for gaming, and sent it back to Amazon for credit, which was very efficient, I recieved credit for the return within 2 weeks. Still looking for a set of headphones with a decent mic at this price range, I am currently using a 10.00 desk mic, which works but a bit of a pain.

The sound effect is much better than my 32 ohm earplugs, I mean all of them, especially at low frequency.But the "behind the neck bar" doesn't fit my head very well. It's too tight for me and has a conflict with my lenses. I need to release it every half hour to relax my ear back from being squeezing.

I purchased them to use the headphones--for their frequency response and comfort level. All of which we researched and compared and the SB40 is excellent. The microphone could be better (just my opinion based upon comments from people on the other end listening to use using different mics), but is as good as most you'll find. (If you need a really good mic, you'll need to add something like the Zalman Microphone Zm-Mic1 High Sensitivity Headphone Microphone Retail to the SB40.) If you just want to listen to music, TV, etc., for the price I don't think you'll beat these.

I 'thought' there was an inline volume control but apparently not on this model. I still like the fit, comfort, and sound quality of the headset.

It's just missing a pivot to move the mic away when you don't use it, and you have to stretch the fixation otherwise it presses to hard on your head. Otherwise the sound is really great and I like the fact there is no analogic volume control because the ones I had before always end up having bad contact in the wheel.

I bought this Koss SB-40 headset from Amazon and if you plan on using this headset with your computer...you should NOT buy this one. First, it has an impedance of 120 ohms not 32 ohms. Second, the mic is mono so any audio pushed through it will be single channel only. Third, the mic's output is muddy and the volume is exceedingly low.This is a studio headset and would probably work very well in a studio setting hooked into a mixer. But it is a poor redheaded step-child if your going to use this headset for computer use. Learn from my mistake.Stephen

Have only used it with the Skype program one time since I received it, and also with music listening. It is very sharp and clear, my son hadsuggested this Koss SB40. He had experience with one. I am glad he suggested it. Thank you for your service.

The sound is great. Isolation from outside sounds is good. This is good for listening to a game, but not the best if someone is trying to say something to you over the game. So it can be a mixed blessing in a LAN setting. They are quite comfortable for long use, but can get a bit warm. The last little issue is that there is no in-line volume control. This isn't much of an issue for me since my keyboard has volume control. But if yours does not, it might be an issue as tabbing out to the desktop from a game for volume control or opening up a game options menu to adjust volume is suboptimal.Bottom line: if sound quality and solid construction are things that you want, this is a great product.

I'd recommend this headset to anyone, great sound,comfortable in my opinion. Also lifetime warranty no one can beat that. Only downside is the microphone, very poor quality, I'd recommend getting a zalman mic to go along with it or some kind of mic attachment.

I have been using the Koss SB40 for a month now and am thoroughly happy with them. For a very reasonably price you get great sound and comfort in a durable package.Before I bought mine I read reviews here saying that the microphone is not that strong. My experiece is that the sound software you choose to use and how you configure the software has a LARGE effect on how well the microphone perform. I admit, I have a tendency to mumble a bit if I speak while I'm distracted, but with some experimentation to find the right software for my computer and some feedback from my friends I was able to configure it to perfection.I'd buy these again in a heartbeat and recomend them to anyone with a modicum of computer savy.

No specifications come along with this product. Had it not been for the first reviewer (Barrad), I wud not have been able to find where the batteries go. Sound quality is extremely bad. It is like the music has been muffed. Sound from my $5 unbranded earphones is much better than this one. Bought it online, returning will be a hassle again. Should always experience such things at a store and then buy.

Seeing as how the package contained NO information at all really & any usual internet search (Atleast as of a few days ago) was all foreign based & no real information. These will work without the 2x Batteries however they won't have their special bass & Vibration etc... - Was wondering for a few days where the batteries would go. Was a little weary about pulling on the Ear pieces (Only possible battery spots) - You have to give the Left Ear piece (Same side as the Volume control & On/Off switch) a bit of a Twist & then it'll come right off. Insert the 2x AAA batteries & Enjoy!

The breakdown-PROS:*Sound seems to be good for the price*Nice look*Good cord length (~ 8 ft)CONS:*High resistance (60 ohms) which makes it harder for devices to drive.*No in-line mute/volume control***Not comfortable (behind-the-neck design)Bottom line: If it was not so uncomfortable to wear these might make a great headset.The details-I was looking for a multi-purpose headset. I use skype to talk with my friends on-line while we play games, also I like to listen to music while I am waiting for my friends to get on-line. So, I wanted a headset that had a average to good quality mic, and offered good (above average) sound.I was thinking since people boast about the great quality for the price of KOSS's KSC-50s and KSC-75s, I thought I would give the CS-80 headsets a try. CS-80s are similar to the KSC-50s but have a behind the head design and a mic.The KOSS CS-80 is a fairly good sounding headset. I have a problem with the deep bass. It seems that the bass reduces the overall clarity. However, the sound is pretty good for the price range. Also, once you get an EQ to reduce the bass the clarity is much better.The mic does not seem to be anything that special, but I have not tested it that much. It seems that it does reduce noise. Voice quality reproduction is good, but I do not think it is anything that special.The biggest problem that I had with this headset is the behind-the-neck design. I have not had any headphones with the behind-the-neck design, so I did not know how they would feel. Although, since the CS-80 are suppose to sound good, I thought a little pain would be a trade-off. When I first tried the headphones they felt great. The problem was after an hour or so the damn things made me want to cut my ears off. I do wear glasses so maybe this is a factor. The pain is so great that it really does not make the sound worth it and that is the reason they only get two stars.

So far I have owned about 5 pairs of this headset, Personally I think it's the best headset for the price. It is comfortable, the sound is good and the microphone picks up just fine. Durability-wise there are some issues, but the design itself is very flexible and takes a huge amount of damage before breaking. I suppose I could go out and buy a more expensive headset, however from my experience this headset is much more durable, and if you expect that your headphones will slip off your head unintentionally and bash on the ground or if you have temper tantrums while running the same Molten Core boss for the twentieth time because your guild is useless: I wouldn't trust any other headset to stand up to your wrath. I've thrown this thing in a carry-on and then flown hours while kicking the bag only to find no damage at all to the headset, I have run further than the cord lets me and been yanked back and the cable stays in place with no issues. I have chewed on the microphone, and kicked the headset with no damage, and when I actually broke a headset after years of mistreatment the break was fixable with duct tape with no loss of sound fidelity, and no loss of comfort. No Bose headset I have ever seen or used could withstand the same torture I provide to my Koss headset every day.

i bought this product by paying around $37/- for it and within 40 days the microphone stoped working.....this is not the first time that this was hapening...if u chk reviews u can find that most ppl r complaining about the microphone not working...n now since it has exceeded 30 days of my purchase amazon cant help me....i am stuck up nowhere now...i lost my $37/- i guess...

These headphones had a nice fit over the ear and the sound was good - better than most for the price. The cord was long enough and they looked like they would be a little more durable than some of the other headphones I have purchased in the past.I knocked off one star because the microphone did not work and I had to return it.I knocked off another star because there was not a volume control. This means you need to set/adjust the volume from your applications - which can be a real bother.

I had this headset for 2 years. After one year the mic started to only work once in a while then not at all after a few months. However the sound quality was excellent. I could be bias in that these were the first circumaural(cover the ear) headphones i had, but it blocked out pretty much all the noise that my suitmates made(even the blast of their speakers). I even wore them without music just to block some ambient noise. The comfort factor is also exceptional, I wore them hours upon hours and they were just great. However not the best to wear in bed because the ear covers are huge.The problem is after the 2 years the left side of the headphone stopped working, but I did "torture" the set by wearing it continuosely for hours and dropping the headset quite a number of times. Overall, if you take care of your headsets then this is the best headset for the best price you can get.

I thik this headset is relatively cheap (especially in some comparisons) and it sounds exremely well (as good as my 100 dollar koss pair - no mic on those though)The mic is abit different on this, it doesnt seem to pic up yer voice well if it gets moved just a little bit away from yer mouth, but i didnt find it to be a big problem for me.overall, great product, koss will keep me for headsets for sure

I have owed these for over a year without any problem. The best headset I have owned. I've also own a pair of plantronic 90 and I prefer these by a wide marging. The sound is just great, durabily is perfect. I mistreat these a lot and wear them all day. I have dropped them, sat on them, you name it and I have done it. Even after all this abuse they still work like a champ. The mic is not perfect but a lot better than non name brand headsets. My plantronic 90 mic is a bit better but not enough to beat these over all. I talk to a good friend over the internet every day for the past 8 to 9 month and they are great. He gives me compliments on the mic sound over the no name brand I have and which were newer and not working well any more (they are shorting out). The comfort is excellent, I wear these for many hours daily and I just forget I have them on. I have three computer at home and two laptop and I use these 90% of the time. I just love them, they are also very loud , which is a plus if your hard of hearing like me. If you have hearing problems, please get these you won't resent it, I promise! The cord is very long and you'll have no problem reaching the back of your computer. Finally, when my no name brand finally [...]-out I "will buy these Koss again" no buts about it. Given that I know where to get the plantronic 90 cheaper than these, I will still purchase these over those plantronic. Nuff said!
