I have only purchased one multi tasking printer previously and felt while it did many things, it none very well. Times have changed. This HP printer is a fantastic workhorse. NOt only am I using it for printing from as many as 4-5 computers, but have been copying music into PFD format to display on a small computer for playing. It takes a while to et the music in but the reward is never carrying a huge notebook of music again.

This is a good printer with a lot of nice features. The setup was relatively easy on a Mac, but there were some problems using Lion (see below). I like the fax, scan, copy, and print features. The printer doesn't do color, but the quality is what you'd expect from a Laserjet. The network setup was quick and easy and there is both an ethernet connection and WiFi. The printer is also AirPrint enabled, which is nice if you want to print from your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.This printer replaced my Photosmart printer because I never print photos and I print so infrequently that my ink dries up. I elected to go with a laser because the toner won't dry from disuse.Setting up was easy. You still have to use the CD when installing on a Mac (the Smart Install feature is for Windows users only), but it wasn't a problem. You can either set it up via a USB cable or over the network. The problems I had were installing the software and configuring the fax settings while using OS X version 10.7.1 (Lion). Halfway through the installation, you get a text box that says you must have admin rights to install the printer (I'm logged in as an admin on my Macbook). I called HP and they said that it's a known issue with Lion. I used another computer (running Snow Leopard) to set up the fax settings and do the initial install with no issues. I was still able to set up the printer to both print and fax (but not scan) from the Macbook running Lion (just go to your Print & Scan menu in System Prefs).Pros - Networked all-in-one with Fax, Scan, Copy and Print capabilities. It's a Laser, so the quality is great and the toner doesn't "dry out." AirPrint is awesome! The printer also goes to "sleep" after 15 min for energy savings, but this is transparent to the user as it wakes up once you try to print to it. It also supports ePrint which is HPs networked solution to log in and print to your printer from anywhere in the world. Document feeder holds plenty of paper and will collate copies.Cons - It's a laser, so the toner is expensive (almost $50/cartridge). No color. Issues with Lion.Overall, I'm happy with the printer and its network functions, especially AirPrint. Recommend.

After three frustrating hours of trying to decipher this printer's layers of puzzling buttons and achieve setup despite near-complete lack of instructions, I called a network-savvy friend with whom, after another half-hour of work, we got through basic wireless setup under Mac Lion.There just is no need to make a device as impenetrable as this one; I had the feeling that HP employees/suppliers in China were giggling at my attempts to maintain sanity.Just for the record, I've been using computers continuously since 1968, first as programmer and later as user of DOS, Windows, Linux and Macintosh. I'm no newcomer.The only reason I've awarded 2 stars instead of 1 is that, when you do guess the right combination of features and instructions, this printer does deliver readable prints, rapidly. In all other senses, to release a product of such complexity with a scant few drawings as instructions for use is irresponsible on Hewlett-Packard's part. This is surely a sign of the company's decline.DEC 2012: I upgraded it to 3 stars: most of its advertised functions do work, though despite a nonintuitive user interface; the starter toner cartridge supplied lasted for over 500 pages, and installing a new toner cartridge can be done in less than minute---"Poka Yoke" to the max!

This printer works great in letting me print, including air print and google cloud print. Printing is fairly fast and looks quite good. I have a Mac and I was unable to install some of the software on my Mac - specifically that used for google cloud print. After a while wasted trying to figure this out, it looked like the only was for me to install software on a windows computer and set up google cloud print that way. Now everything works.

This has got to be one of the best printers ever made. Wireless, duplexing, what more could you want from a printer. Well, it would be nice if it cooled your beer. I hope that will be in the next generation of HP printers.

Purchased this All-in-One printer for a second home as it was compact and could handle all functions while away from primary home. Printer would not function properly so my husband called HP Customer Service, staying on line forever, until he was told there was no warranty/customer service support for items sold by Amazon and was offered Customer Service support for an annual fee, which he declined. Since this purchase was for a second home, we did not immediately try to install the printer and it was over 30 days after the purchase date, so we were unable to return the item as well. We are SOL; printer is still not working and we have no recourse. We were never advised that there was no warranty or HP Customer Service support on items purchased from Amazon. I will think twice about purchasing anything from Amazon in the future.

While I was impressed enough by the operation of this printer to have bought two over the last year I am giving this product one star due to an underhanded move in a firmware upgrade. As an environmentally friendly and frankly money saving move I routinely utilize third party remanufactured printer cartridges. As these are recycled HP cartridges they were read by the printer as "Genuine HP".To improve the functionality of this printer when using Apple Airprint the HP site advised that the printer firmware be upgraded. As suggest I installed the firmware "upgrade" but the Airprint function does not work any better. What I did find was that my remanufactured cartridges are now read by the printer as "unsupported" and the printer locks up. HP was once a great company however this behavior is symptomatic of an organization that has lost its moral compass. If you are thinking of purchasing this printer you should consider the ethics of this company and be sure that you wish to be locked in to purchasing only their cartridges.

Does not work with apple Airprint. There is an error in the device firmware. I would not buy this until HP fixes it if you need Airprint support. Otherwise a solid printer.

I've spent the last nearly four hours trying to get this printer to connect to my wireless network. Connected to the wireless network are 2 TVs, 1 desktop, 3 laptops, an XBOX, a Roku box, a Vudu box, 2 cell phones, and a Samsung printer. So, I know how to connect wireless devices. A HP technician has been remotely accessing my laptop connected to this printer for the past 90 minutes, but has done nothing that I didn't already try in the previous two and a half hours. No well designed and well manufactured wireless devices should take 4 hours to unsuccessfully install on a wireless network. I'll get my RMA from HP and return this printer, but save yourself 4 hours of grief one Saturday morning and don't waste your time with this printer.

In terms of quality and reliability, this HP printer is as good as any HP printer in this price class. However, when it comes to documentation, HP skimped, and I really mean SKIMPED beyond any acceptable level. None of the all-in-one printer functions was mentioned in the VERY sparse and mostly useless documentation. Having long experience with HP printers, I could fairly easy figure out how to install the printer driver. The copy function was not too difficult to get a handle on either. However, the scan function was not even mentioned in the two small sheets of paper that came with the printer.I assume that HP intends for their customers to browse through the two CDs that came with the printer trying to figure out what file does what. That is not the best way to get new customers. It might, however, be a good way to lose customers, especially those who depend on a little bit of guidance on how to set up the equipment.HP, you can do better than that .....

I am an engineer. I normally have no difficulty with any software or hardware products. This printer simply doesn't scan with my latest Macbook Air. I called the tech support twice already. I do not want to call a third time and yet I am on hold right now with HP support. I regret that I bought this product. If you have a MAC do not buy this period!

This is exactly what I wanted. We were tired of paying a fortune for ink cartridges. We kept our inkjet for photos, but this baby does the bulk of the work. Set up on a mac is not too bad. If you want an easy time of it make sure you get rid of all HP software from previous printers especially if those printers included a scanner. I set up two macbook pros, one that had no hp software, and one that did. The one that did would not allow me to set up the scanner until I uninstalled the other software.Air Print is awesome. I love being able to print from my iPad and iPhone.There are reviews on here that say the remanufactured cartridges do not work because of some firmware update. I purchased 2 Pack: Compatible HP CE285A Laser Toner Cartridges with no problem whatsoever. Purchased through Amazon and DuraEco Two cartridges for 20 dollars delivered, as opposed to HP 1 cartridge for over $50.

HP LaserJet Pro M1217nfw Monochrome All-in-One PrinterHP LaserJet Pro M1217nfw Monochrome All-in-One PrinterPurchased from Better Choice On Line for $199.99 included free shipping.The printer was easy to set up after I did a firmware update(recommended as 1st thing right out of box). With my internet provider (Comcast)I had to manually input the required information for server setup. Once that was done, the network worked like a charm. One word of caution I ended up with several choices of printers to chose from to send print jobs to. The printer and the fax so be aware of that when you go to print. Will monitor toner consumption and update this so you will have and idea how fast this printer goes threw toner (since others have complained about that issue)and how it likes generic toner cartridges and from whom I purchased the cartridges from.

I do tons of printing for work and really needed to buy a laser printer that had a really low cost per page. I researched monochrome laser printers for a couple of weeks before buying this one and I really like this one, it is my first laser printer and much cheaper per page than any inkjet. I actually based my decision on the cost of the toner cartridges. HP's toner cartridges are expensive, but the 85A has been out for a while and there are some really inexpensive and good quality generic cartridges 2 Pack: Compatible HP CE285A Laser Toner Cartridges. I purchased a pack of 2 for about $25 and when I installed it the printer recognized it as genuine hp. The printer is a bit loud but I can live with that. It prints bout three to three and a half reams of paper with the starter cartridge. In my opinion you can't go wrong with this printer. It has a document feeder which can scan to pdf, one of the functions that I use a lot and the wireless printing is seamless I haven't had to reset the printer or my computer because of a freeze-up. I have it connected to three computers and an iPad and they all work great with it. If you don't mind it being kind of loud then this is your best bang for your buck.

I decided to go with a laserjet after my HP inkjet wouldn't print black/white documents because a color cartridge was empty.Setup with the printer was very easy and no CD is required. It comes with a 3' USB cable and you just connect it to the PC and a dialog box asks which type of install you would like to perform (wired network, direct USB connection, or wireless). I did the wireless connection- so I had to enter in the password for the printer to get on which is all configured through the PC. Overall, the total install and setup took about 10 minutes.I did change the amount of time for the printer to enter the sleep mode. The default was 15 minutes and I changed it to 5 since I don't print as often. You change this by right clicking on the printer and going to the properties menu on your PC.For printing, the text is very clear. Images are pretty good as well. I printed directions and maps and from google and everything looked clear. I love how fast the printer is. Even when the printer is in sleep mode, it starts printing in less than 10 seconds.I scanned one file so far to test it out. I performed the scan wirelessly which is a nice feature. I didn't play around with the resolution but the image didn't seem as clear as my photosmart all-in-one. But, for what I plan to use it for I think it works great.The document feeder also works well so far (I only tested once) and I haven't tried the fax yet.The only complaint I have, is that I wish it had auto-duplexing. Overall I am happy with the purchase. I also bought it directly from HP since they had $ 30 off plus an additional $ 50.

I bought this all-in-one after a lot of research and I have been mostly satisfied with it given its cost. It prints quickly and set-up was incredibly easy.My gripes are that the pages it produces come out slightly rolled (I think from the heat) and that the automatic document feeder doesn't always take all the pages at once. These problems aren't the end of the world because the pages do eventually flatten out and whether scanning or copying, I can always just say "scan another page" or push the copy button again.All in all, this is a good value for the money.

ive noticed alot of other reviewers had problems with using all the features of this printer. Ive managed to get everything working. i have the printer wirelessly connected to my network and i can scan print & fax from my macbook pro running lion.Heres what i had to do:1. download the updated printer firmware from hp site and install via usb cable.2. download the driver installer from hp site(do not use the included cd) install via usb.3. go to system prefs>print&scan> select your printer then go to options and supplies.go to the utility tab and open printer utility. You should now be in the onboard browser. go to the networking tab and configure the settings to connect to you wireless network. when the printer is connected, close the browser.4. remove the usb cable and uninstall the printer from system prefs.5. re-install from the installer you downloaded in step 2. choose network when it asks. when it finishes you should have everything working fine.Hope this helps anyone whos been having a hard time.

I purchased several of these for remote workers to use. InkJets were expensive to operate and we had frequent problems with them. Our people seem much happier with these since they are Laser.The main problem we have is that there is no Scan Button so scanning depends on the HP Scanning software. Our users have difficulty with it, and it's just not very configurable. Overall, I will still purchase them as long as heavy scanning isn't needed.

Install is about as easy as anything I ever installed. I used the Smart Install USB cable for each of the two laptops that I own. One is Vista and the other is Windows 7. No disc is required. I purchased this printer from the HP Online store and have had it for about 3 months. Printing, copying and scanning are all working flawlessly. One person mentioned that they had to set different file names for each scan. I did not find that to be the case. For scanning, go to Programs -> HP -> HP Laserjet 1210 Series -> Scan to the program asks for the name once, scan your documents, after each one, it will ask if you have another one to scan. It appends a number to each with the file name you entered. Other than a test, I haven't done any faxing.If you just do casual printing, there is no need to buy the flimsy color inkjet all in one printers. Toner cartridges last so much longer and the laserjet printers themselves should last a lot longer since there is less mechanical movement.

I don't love the scanning feature, and my house phone works a little strangely now with the fax running through it, but overall this was a great purchase. Relatively inexpensive for a very fast printer that is totally silent. Installation was easy, although I have Vista which had a strange setting making the printer disappear every day--fun! A call to HP support fixed that--it took awhile for the tech to find the problem, but at least she was willing and able to try. Amazon is great, always keeping me well informed of order/shipping status and getting it here in great shape.

The setup guide is the most abbreviated I have ever seen with zero text and only pictures which only goes so far. The footprint is larger than the specs indicate as the paper tray has to extend about 5 inches out from the front.The is a ferrite filter that attaches to the power cord but the picture does not specify this and the coupling has too large an inner diameter so it slides down the power cord (fixed with a little tape but evidence of poor engineering).Printer cartridge is very small, even for this class of printers, and I would not expect to get many pages printed which in turn will make this a very expensive machine if used a lot for printing. The CE285A cartridge is the only one that it takes and this "1600 page" cartridge sells for more than the "2600 page" cartridge for the Brother MFP machines.Upon powering on the unit I immediately got a message "supply memory error" which means one of three things, bad cable, bad DC controller, or a bad chip in the cartridge, as this is a system HP uses to discourage the use of third party cartridges in their printers. I was not about to play technician and take the machine apart and found lots of references to this problem with HP printers.
