First time in years I have owned a camera, took it out yesterday and managed to snap a couple of lightning strikes, which is nice.

A problem I found is the autofocus works most of the time, but if there's something wrong with the scene pointed at, probably not enough contrast like dark clouds waiting for lightning, it fails completely. It does have a manual focus, which I checked before buying, but that's so unusable, it's almost as if they deliberately designed it so badly to stop you using it, and it's only available in a mode that forces you to choose either the aperture or shutter speed, or both, if you want manual focus then you're obviously a pro who doesn't want the auto mode.

An easier way to get it to focus properly is to prefocus on a scene that works at the same distance, then while keeping the button half pressed point at the target and then shoot.

Update: I've changed this review from 4 stars to 1 star because I hate the autofocus so much now, it doesn't even get a sharp focus at short range in normal light. I wouldn't care about this if they hadn't made the manual focus so difficult to use...

This little camera is fantastic value.

The optical zoom is easy to use and extremely good. In general it is a very simple to get to grips with and take great shots. My needs were simple I wanted a camera that I could take good quality pictures yet I could not justify spending a fortune on a true SLR camera. This little fuji ticks all the boxes.

You can use it in automatic mode or of course in manual as well as stages in between. It is less bulky than the SLR camera. I thought that I could always get a snap using my phone camera but wanted something that I could take out specifically to take quality shots. What I can say it is the best camera I have owned, even comparing it to my Nikon F50 35mm which I adore. The S5700 is worth every penny.

In general you do not need to spend a fortune on the SD card I bought a 1GB and download all my images after each excursion. I have never come close to filling the memory and I use it on its maximum setting for detail. I seem to singing this little fuji's praises. Well it is good.

In terms of the software it comes with it is OK but I tend not to use. I merely mention this and it does not detract from the camera or its usage in the field or in your home studio e.g. your PC.

Great camera. The only problem is that I have difficulty prising it off my husband and son, who know a lot more about cameras than I do and love it as well. Great zoom, macro and relatively easy to use with more advanced features to explore.

This case does the job but it could have been better designed , especial as there is little room for spare batteries,memory cards etc.

This is my first Fuji Camrea. I owned a Canon G2 for 5 years.

My Initial test on the camera was disppointing as I was shooting most pics in Low light condition in Auto Mode, P mode with very low ISO setting 100. I decided to return this camera.

Before returning I wanted to give it one more try with all combination of ISO and SP modes. I took lot of pics with differnt ISO setting in P mode and all Kinds of SP modes. In P mode I have got very good pics both in Low and Day light conditions.

Here is my recommended settings on P mode. In Bright Day lights Set ISO to 64. In low light conditions set ISO to 400 or 800 depending on the brightness of light. Set the Sharpness to HARD for Lowlight if you are lover of sharp pics. Also take pics by boosting the Exposure little bit if needed. Lowlight pics taken with these settings produced very less noise, vewing 100% on computer screen was not that bad at all. The Print qualtity will be still good if we stick to 6x4/5x7/8x11 size.

Get closer (4-6 Feet) to the object in Low light conditions even if you decide to use flash.

The AUTO and SP modes are not useful. The Pics taken with these modes shows lot of noise when viewing the Pic 100% on the computer.

Stick to P mode always in Day or Lowlight.

The Macro mode is very good, Excellent job done by the camera. I have shoot pics on morning dew set on the window in macro mode, I was stunned by the quality of the pics.

The Image Stabilizer worked very good.

The Face Detection works very well.

The N and N plus Flash is a very good feature on this camera.

WORTH THE MONEY. I cannot expect anything more on a NON SLR Camera.

This camera qualifies for 5 Star rating. I have given 4 Stars because the qualtiy of buttons feels very cheap plastic and the Battery door is very Flimsy. People with bigger fingers may find it diffcult to feel the buttons. The buttons on Panasonic FZ8 is very good.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED......

If Fuji used their Super CCD in this camera, it would be the best in the market.

Great digital camera for the price. Maybe not the fastest digital around, but having one lens that goes from 28mm to 400mm is well worth it; and the macro works great. Amazing when you think about it. A lot of features similar to a good SLR camera (may need to take manual with you for awhile)! Had some 11x18 prints made and they look great to me.
Lots of memory storage on a card and battery charge seems pretty long.

I used the camera on a cruise, and the pictures I took outside on the ship, on the beach, and inside were all very clear and sharp. I took a little getting used to the controls at first, but switching from mode to mode actually turned out to be a very useful control. When traveling, the wall battery charger is very convinient to use b/c it doesn't require an extra power cord to carry like my other camera.

Pros:
inexpensive (I paid $90) - I would say it's worth it at $90 but not much more.
small - fits in my pocket without being uncomfortable.
easy to use
Good pictures in good light
Battery - charges quickly lasts a while

Cons:
Horrible night photos
Flash bleaches the color
blurry photos in lower light or without flash

All in all this is an ok camera. I wasn't expecting anything amazing, but I thought it may perform slightly better at night. Since I'll primarily be using it for hiking (i.e. the daytime), I'm not too worried. Knowing what I know now I may have spent an extra $30-$50 for something better under non ideal lighting conditions, but this will do until I break it.

Quite a nice little case but without a shoulder strap, strap loops, or belt loop it isn't very practical. I assume you are supposed to use the camera strap but this means all the weight is supported by the case lid, and what are you supposed to do with it while you are using the camera? Really no more than a mini handbag.
Nothing on the item description to warn you about this, so I sent mine back.

I was looking for a camera with basic functions. Really if my Samsung Blackjack's camera has a built in flash, I might not really need a new camera. I need a small camera that can fit in my purse or pants pockets. I looked at some models that use rechargable AA batteries, but the camera will be a lot thicker and heavier. This camera fits my requirements and the price is really attractive.

I played with it the night I received it. The basic manual didn't take too long to read through the important points. There is supposed to be a more detailed manual in the CD, but I haven't had the need to read it yet.

The anti-blur feature, which is new to me, is really useful. The camera doesn't have too many buttons to confuse me, and as you change the settings the explanation of the new setting is displayed on the LCD. No need to keep the manual around with you.

I have a 1GB Kingston micro SD that I bought for my cell phone, and I am able to use it on this camera, with the SD adaptor. The basic manual does warn that some mini/micro SD adaptors have additional contacts at the back and they should not be used on this camera.

Overall I am really pleased with the features on this camera. I look forward to bringing it with me on my next vacation.

I had a lovely vivitar camera that never let me down, until I took it on holiday to spain. I had to use my phone to take pics and decided I really wanted another straight forward digital camera for as little as possible. I found the Fuji S5700 for £75 yes £75 and hoped it would be easy to use. I have to say its easy to take shots or videos, can be set up and snapping within minutes. The battery lasts much longer and quality photographs are guaranteed.

I recommend this camera for anyone who wants to step up a touch and produce better photos.

At first glance this is a well padded case that gives good camera protection. It gives a very snug fit to the camera so that you have to be careful when easing it out in case you accidently press the off/on switch. It might get looser with use.There is no belt clip which makes things a bit awkward.I found that if you thread the camera strap through the loop on the side of the case then with it around your neck you can safely remove the camera from its case & leave the case dangling on the strap. I hope this makes sense.

I received this camera as a 2008 Christmas gift from my husband. My son passed on his recommendations to his dad as to what to purchase for me. My son and I had many conversations as to what type of camera would be the most easy to handle and yet get more options out of. (DSLR or SLR) The Fugi FinePIx S100FS was a perfect choice for me. I have plenty of Modes to choose from and with each day of use, I learn more about the camera and it's capabilities. I believe anyone who wants to take the next step towards finer photography without purchasing a DSLR, should give the Fugi FinePix S100FS first consideration.

I found this camera excellent. very impressed with the image quality and lack of noise at high ISO, such as 400 and 800. Of course, not as good as my dSLR, but definitely worth the £50 i spent on it.

Easy to use, with a good range of manual features too (ISO, Exposure, white balance) for a budget camera. Well Recommended for beginners or anyone wanting a cheap, but quality backup. Battery power is via 2x AAs, so keep some spares around as camera doesn't last that long, even with rechargeable 2500mAH...

Fuji make a range of budget cameras in its A-range. this is the top of the range and definitely shows its calibre. my advice is to check in store the quality of this and any other Fuji cameras as even in the A-range, image quality varies.

I have found this to be an excellent camera yet another one in the Fuji range I found it easy to use and was very pleased which the photos produced

I wasn't expecting this camera to be so small, but its smaller than my own phone. Its neat and pictures are okay for the price of the camera. It only holds THREE pictures without a sim card which I am upset about cause I didnt get a sim card right away. So best to purchase one with it or it would be a waste.

It's not going to compare that well to a DSLR but compared to other cameras in it's class, it's an excellent little camera that I carry around with me all of the time.

What I like about it is that it takes sharp clear photos (with my Kodak 433, I used to have to "sharpen" all of my photos) while with the Fuji, I find the photos look a lot better right off the card.

There is some noise in lower light but that is normal for all of cameras in the class.

Bought this for our last snowboarding trip, primarily for its zoom and video features. Did all it said on the box and more. Brilliant piece of kit; packed with features usually only found on cameras costing a lot more.

Shoots quality video, with sound, in up to 2gig segments. Stills are fantastic quality, brilliant colour. Mega zoom.

Recommend the Fuji XD cards as they seem to produce the best colour and video flow. The minimum size card for this camera is 2gig if you really want to have fun with it. Shop around for the best price for XD cards - I got a 2gig for £17! If your PC card reader doesn't support XD cards, buy a Yikomi 54-in-1 card reader (£9.99 from Argos!).

The only niggle is that transferring pics/video to your PC by linking the camera to your PC tends to nuke the batteries part way through. Fuji recommend using the AC adapter (not included) to power the camera while transferring. Cheaper and easier to use a card reader.

The FinePix software is easy to use. Be warned, though, if you buy the upgrade (from Pixela via the link) for the VCD/DVD-creation software in the bundle, it is temperamental. When it does work, the results are brilliant & the batch processing feature for still-to-video is so much better than having to drag&drop individual frames. Spend some time on the Pixela help page BEFORE unlocking the VCD/DVD upgrade, as mistakes are frustratingly hard to rectify.

The camera itself is nice and idiot-proof to use. Good, large, clear screen. The slightly unusual grip is surprisingly ergonomic. Very reliable; top brand. Super value for money.

I was attracted to this camera because of the lens and after seeing the results from my brothers 5600.
Best bits - great lens, wide range of settings but also very easy to use, accepts filters, long battery life, SD card compatible and the price.
Downside - too big to fit into your pocket and struggles a bit in low light conditions (but no worse than any other camera I've used in this price range).
Overall - very pleased.
Top tips - Buy the Fiji camera bag, its well made and has a compartment for spare batteries. Discard the fiddly lens cap and replace with a 46mm filter e.g. Skylight (1B). This fully protects the lens and simplifies use.

I bought this camera for my 11 year old son for his birthday. Everyone else in our home had a camera and he wanted one too. For a little camera it takes pretty good pictures, comparable to cameras twice the price. It does NOT take video, which he was at first a little disappointed about. Overall he loves it. The first two day he had it, he took over 300 pictures.

My wife wanted a small camera that she could take with her anywhere and this is it! She wanted a camera that was easy to use, take great pictures and would easily fit in her purse. It has a large LCD on the back that is easy to see, you don't have to worry about hand shake and it takes great pictures!

A snug fit offering excellent protection for compact SLR Fuiji camera and came at a very good price...I always search for best value again only on originals. You will need to purchase a larger bag if you want it to hold other accessories to your camera i.e.batts etc. This is perfect to hang around your neck just for using you camera only.

camera preforms quite well , the only disappointing thing is the manual focus, it seems strange but after using it I am assuming that I will get use to it ,the camera bag for this item is small and you really have to stuff it in as there is no room to spare
