We replaced a Microtek x6el with this scanner. I have no complaints it copies, scans, and no hardware conflicts like I had with the Microtek. A great scanner for the price.

I check out a number of the reviews on scanners and finally decided on this one. I'm glad I did. The scanner works great, easy to use, and was priced well. My favorite feature: the software that comes with it lets you scan multiple pictures at the same time and it automatically recognizes each of them separately. This saves a ton of time. I load up anywhere from 4-10 pictures and hit scan. Done!

After several weeks of research, I bought my first scanner, the EPSON Perfection 2400. My goal was to convert several decades prints, film negatives, and slides. In my move to digital, the price of this scanner seemed extremely attractive for all the features it offered. The package also included the venerable Adobe Photoshop Elements (Version 1).Right off the bat, the scanner would not install on my IBM Thinkpad T40, running factory installed Windows XP Pro. I would get a "Cannot Install Hardware. Data is Invalid" message when I connected the scanner even though the software installed successfully. After one week of research, including two one-hour sessions with EPSON support, I ended up reinstalling Windows XP. Epson support was unable to pinpoint the problem the first time but promised to call back within two days. They did not call. When I called again, I spoke to a "second tier support engineer" and she was able to identify a potential issue with my installation of Windows XP. Her recommendation was to re-install Windows XP. After I did that, the scanner was running within minutes.Hardware: The scanner is very fast, and the results look fabulous. On print scanning ability, I would give this scanner top grade even when pitched against the professional grade scanner I have used at work. The scanning of negatives is not that good. The negative scans do not seem to produce very accurate colors and the images don't look as sharp as direct scans. This is certainly a disappointment, because scanning 5 negatives at one time seems like a better idea than loading prints one-by-one. Perhaps I need a better negative adapter; so far I've only been using the one that came along with the scanner.Software: The scanner software leaves much to be desired. The installation of the software occurs in several steps, and it is impossible to intelligently choose the different components. If you have handheld software already installed, Presto! Pix software is installed without giving you a choice. Even though diskspace is not expensive, I think 150MB is excessive for the scanner software. Once the installation is complete, the Start-->Programs menu gets cluttered with about four or five items. The performance of the software itself is irratic and it is not always clear what it is doing. On several occasions, I have scanned a dozen or so images, and the scanner software just vanishes from the screen when I try to save to disk (the taskbar icon stays) and takes all my scans with it. I get the impression EPSON simply packaged software from multiple vendors and ended up in a tangled mess. The poor "Smart Panel" software is the only reason this review does not get five stars. The saving grace is the inclusion of Adobe Photoshop Elements. Adobe Photoshop Elements makes up for almost all the shortcomings of the other "Smart Panel" software; perhaps the high quality of Photoshop Elements accentuates the problems with "Smart Panel" ! Photoshop Elements includes a plethora of features, and the software is very stable and of high quality. Overall, this is a fine scanner and I recommend it without reservation. You can circumvent most of the poor "Smart Panel" software by using Adobe Photoshop elements.

For the price you pay for the Epson Perfection 3490, you acheive great results. It's capable of produce very fine quality digital images, and it's quick enough for me. The included software makes it very easy to auto scan with preset options, or allows you to decide all the options and get exactly the kind of image you need. Great buy!

My 6 year old trusty Umax scanner was starting to show its age, so i looked for a new scanner that had good reviews. The Epson Perfection 2480 seemed to be one of the best rated.I use my scanner a few times a week for scanning graphic art.I have found this scanner to be disappointing compared to my old Umax. I find I get cast shadows around my images, so much so, that I took it in for repairs after having it only 3 months. All the major parts that could have been causing the problem were replaced, but I still have the problem, so I assume it is a builit in defect.Too bad. I will probably look for a better scanner for my needs.

This is my 3 or 4th scanner and based on the review that I purchased it, it is the best of all that I have used. It outclassed Visioneer (from Office Max). No problems with the software, no nagging for registration on each re-installation, but I have not had to re-install. I am 80 and still working in genealogy, I was scanning old photographs, it took a learning period, but no problems of any kind. Also, no problems in ordering or in receiving it. The shipment arrived several days earlier than projected. Thank you for a great job!

The Epson Perfection 2480 was my third attempt at finding a perfect scanner for my needs. I'm trying to convert all of my childhood, my wife's childhood, and my other family pictures to digital for archiving and family distribution. Some of these pictures are in 35mm color negative, some in positive slides, some in some small format negative, and some in old photos. This scanner only allows you to scan three 35mm negatives per pass, so scanning negatives was tedious and time consuming. Plus the firmware on the scanner was set so that for every image pass the scanner moved back to the stop position before it would move on to the next image, rather than begining where the other ended. So for three negatives it would make six large moves, which seems like excessive wear and may make the life shorter. The software worked great, but in the end I returned this item for the Epson 4180, for the extra $90 you get 12 negatives per pass and it seems to be twice as fast. Worth the extra money if you have boxes to scan like I do!

Epson was clearly going for features over quality with this scanner. You don't need to get out a ruler to notice that the images produced are distored. Vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines are all wobbly. On my unit the right inch of the image is noticeably darker than the rest of the image. Colors are inconsistent to, with the center being bluer and the sides begin greener.Yes, this is only $100, so I wasn't expecting "Perfection", but I was expecting distortions and problems to be limited to things I'd have to measure or see only under magnification. With this scanner, just scanning an invoice shows up the problems without even trying to look for them. The packaged OCR software worked great the one time I tried it and I could see using this scanner for OCR and in place of a Fax scanner, but if you care about image quality at all, this is not the scanner for you.

The manufacturer claims this product will install on Windows 2000. Eventually it will, however the installation software failsto notice that a file it attempts to copy to is in a 'Read only' state. This causes the setup process to fail with a nearly useless error message. In addition, if you attempt to register the product online the response to the Internet dial up is: "you have reached a number which is disconnected or no longer in service".One more thing, as you are told to "slide the transportation lock to the unlock position" you are warned "Don't turn the scanner over to access the lock or you may damage the scanner". After that when you attempt to register the product you discover the serial number, they request, is recorded on the bottom of the scanner.George AhearnLos Gatos CA.

I bought this scanner to scan and organize all of my paper photos. I'm very impressed with the quality of the scans, the colors are acurate and the detail is excellent as well. I also tried the negative adapter and it worked great. The software that comes with the scanner is the best part. You can put a photo in the middle of the scanner, press the scan button on the scanner and it determines the orientation correctly (even if the photo is not perfectly straight). It's as close to "unattended" as you can get; you just have to swap the photos. I use it in combination with Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 and use the "batch processing" feature to name and save all the scanned photos at once. This job would be unmanageble on my old scanner, a CanoScan 620U.I did have a problem with the first unit I bought being defective. I left it plugged in overnight and it was dead in the morning. I was happy enough with the results and low price to buy another one.

It's been many years since I've worked with such an unreliable peice of hardware. Of the 10 times I've tried to use it, it has only functioned properly once. Changing cables, restarting scanner, restaring computer, re-installing software.... nothing. When you really need it to work and it consistently fails leaves you're left feeling very frustrated. Do yourself a favor and pay the extra money to get a scanner that will be reliable. This scanner isn't.

I've read the reviews and they weren't very flattering on this scanner. But after careful re-readings it became apparent that most of the complaints dealt with either incompatibility with printers and/or installation of the supporting software. I've run into these problems myself in the past and slowly, but surely, have discovered that they were due mainly,on my part, by not reading the instructions thoroughly. I decided to put my computer know-how, 3 years of playing around with it, to work and see for myself how 'awful' this product may be. (Amazon has a return policy-thank god)After receiving the item i decided to put everything aside initially and just go over the installation guide, noting any ambiguous or difficult to follow passages. The only discrepancy was noted when the guide notes instructions for only Window 95, 2000 and Mac operating systems. (I have a Window ME) I decided that i will follow the instructions for the Window 2000, as it is supposed to be nearly the same product as the millenium edition. It may be just me but the instructions weren't very difficult. The only minor complaint is that the manual didn't contain any detailed instructions on using the 'TWAIN' software and its properties. This can only be found in the actual software manual on the monitor. (go to start button, go to program, go to epson smart panel for scanner, go to user's manual)After the initial read-through i began the installation of the hardware, its connections and finally the software installation. But before i did this i made sure the hard-drive on my dell pentium 2 was defragmented(using the comupter system tools) to organize and clear up any unused space, followed by a restart. I followed the instructions for the Window 2000 on my Window ME thoroughly, noting there was some minor differences in the process but nothing confusing. After the hardware calibration and software installation, i by-passed the optional softwares for now, it prompted me to restart the computer.( It is also noted in the manual guide that the scanner should always be turned on first before the computer itself.) After restart, i started the program, just installed, and the rest was history. Everything ran fine, including the software. The included extra, photoshop limited ed., was really useless since you can't save any changes of the image to your hard-drive.( you can only do that with an upgrade at an additional cost!) After playing around with some of the setting i found the 'TWAIN' as well as the smart panel program to be very novice friendly and efficient.(advanced users will probably feel contempt for this simple program) My first scan was at a resolution of 97 dpi at 100% size of the scanned item. ( 1:1 ratio ) The results were pretty outstanding! At higher resolution the images were so huge and sharp that it used space up to 600 mb on my harddrive! For folks who want to scan and send pictures to friends via emails, a 97 dpi is more than you will ever need, really!. it's as sharp and big as the original print you just scanned. At 300dpi, the image is sharp enough to detect dust and paper texture of the scanned item. At 1200 dpi, the image requires so much space and processing power that it takes more than 10 minutes for the single scan! ( only useful if you are a graphic artist or want 8"x10"s or bigger prints out of your printer. the size of the image on your monitor does not translate equal size in the printed product.)After careful reading of the software instructions found in the program itself, you will find simple steps to save the scanned images to your hard-drive.(e.g. after the scan, close the twain panel. you will see the index panel pop up with a icon image of the scan. click twice on the small icon image to see the full-sized image. this new window has a file button where you can save it to any application or hard-drive of your computer in many different formats, including jpeg and bmp.)All in all, i found this scanner to be of excellent value and image quality. All i can say is to take your time in the installation and prepare ahead of time to get acquainted with the manual guide. who really cares if it take you an hour or two, just as long as it gets done right the first time. i've had this product for several days now and so far have made approximately 80+ scans without a glitch. If you are one of those types who can't stand reading through a manual then you will most likely skip or reverse a procedure and cause error messages to fly around. remember, a computer functions on exact sequential commands and so it's often necessary to follow the directions to the letter. If you are looking to scan images for emails, collecting images on your hard-drive or CD and web-site auctions, this scanner is actually an overkill. the epson 1240 will more than fit the bill for casual users. Hope this helps out anyone out there looking for a good value.

The unit I received appeared to have a defective CCD imaging system. The scan quality was pretty good, but every scan had 2 vertical red lines that went from top to bottom. Caution to buyers. Epson software on both Mac and Windows is questionable at best.Mac OSXI started on my preferred platform, running Mac OS X 10.2.5. Right off the bat, I had to go to the Epson web site for compatible drivers as the Install disc software only supported OS 9.x. After installing the appropriate drivers, I opened Photoshop 7.0 and tried to initiate a scan of 4 slides from the Import menu item. Unfortunately, the manual option to scan slides was inexplicably greyed out. I rebooted and tried again. Still the scan slide option was unavailable. Did a cold-reboot and this time the option was available. It appears, that each time I try to use the scanner, the software behaves differently. Sometimes options are available, other times not. Sometimes the scanner "forgets" and scans slides as reflective art.Bottom line: Mac OS X support is terribly lacking. There is no stand-alone scanning application. You must use it within Photoshop or the included 1.0 version of Photoshop Elements.Windows XPSo abandoning the Mac, I tried to get it to work on my Windows XP Home laptop. Long story short, while the software support appears to be better on Windows, it still leaves a lot to be desired. Opening the Import menu in Photoshop Elements under Windows did not even provide an option to scan slides or film. But yet the Autoscan "senses" the film and does the right thing. Problem is, using Autoscan does not allow you to set the resolution or color correction parameters. You are left between a rock and a hard place.I've been using Mac and Windows PCs for nearly 20 years, and if there were a manual or decent help system included, I would even surrender to RTFM. But unfortunately, while the reviews on the scan quality have been good (which at this point is hard for me to confirm), the software cannot be defended. If you decide to buy this scanner, be sure to reserve some significant time working through all the software quirks - and maybe you'll be rewarded for your efforts.I'm not giving up yet, but I only have so much patience.

I needed a scanner for a bunch of slides that I needed to preserve and this was it. After some research I found this was by far the best scanner for the money and I'm glad I bought it. The very first scan blew my mind and even after doing a bunch it's still amazing how good the quality is using this. There is a light in the cover that turns on when scanning slides or even negatives, this acts to light the slide and not distort the colors. I have read some reviews about buggy software with this scanner, but I simply downloaded the drivers directly from Epson's site and used them to install the scanner and have had no problems.

Or use at your own risk. It took me a month to isolate problems after installing Crucial memory in the computer. Bought what EPSON recommended, the Belkin 2.0 card. It froze the EPSON Smart Panel. The essiscsi.dll dissapeared from the registry. The ecbteg.dll and ebpport.dll could not be found. The new SmartPanel and Twain driver from the epson.com does not work in Windows ME. Had to uninstall the Epson scanner, printer, belkin card, and clean registry with utility program. Then, reinstall one by one, take the new memory out to make it work at 72 dpi. The slide stuff does not work at all. A big major project and a waste of time. I will not buy any more Epson products any longer. Bad service support and response. Sorry, I thought this company had its act together. Not very happy with their service and products. Go somewhere else. Sorry, I can't recommend other scanner. That's all, folks.

Admittedly, my wife and I were fashionably late for the high tech party and had a lot of catching up to do. Every piece of hardware and software that we bought required a lot of reading or training from 11 year-olds. The Epson Perfection 2400 was happily the exception to this rule. We had it up and running in nearly no time. More important, once it was running it was easy-to-use and the quality of the scanned images was remarkably crisp. Amazon's price is more than a bargain--it's a steal! So if you're not so technically savvy but need a scanner that is affordable and highly-efficient, you can stop your search

Was given this product as gift at Christmas. Was supposed to work on an IMac with a OS of 9.2. Had problems from the original installation. Called Epson (in California) and was advised to download a new driver. It was 10.5meg in size and after downloading and installing, the scanner continued to give me problems. It would scan a 35mm slide but would not enlarge it and would not print anything but a 1"square pic. After several calls to Epson (costing me for the calls) since they do not have an 800# for technical problems. I decided that it was not worth the trouble and returned the product to Amazon. Of course since it was not there problem it will cost me to pay for the return. I feel that the tech. manuals were not well written and seemed to be geared toward those using Windows and not Macintosh.
