Wanted something inexpensive to monitor the temperatures in my home, 1 upstairs and 1 downstairs to compare the difference. So far working well.
Plugs into your computer using the USB port. First you need to install the software. The mini disc that came with mine could not be read by my computer. Not sure if that is a computer or disk issue. Regardless after about 5 minutes of searching; I found the software online on the Elitech website and downloaded it from there. [...]. I was thinking to myself, why doesn't the manufacturer just pre-install the software onto the device like a flash drive... so all you need to do is plug it in... not sure (I guess there must be more to it).
Once the software is loaded, just plug in, open the software, hit the connect button, then go to parameters.... you program the device from your computer. Then unplug it, press and hold the play button for 4 secs... and your data logging. Very easy in my opinion.
To access the data, is just as easy... just plug in, open the software, hit the connect button, then hit the upload data button. Immediately on your screen you have the data. I then download the data to excel... it exports as a .xls... (not a .xlsx) so should be compatible with almost all versions of excel. I'm using 2003... and it work just fine. (Note: in my case, it exports the data as text, so if you’re trying to build your own charts, you need to convert the data to numeric values.) To reset the device; I found the easiest way to clear the data is just go back to the parameters tab, and save your parameters again... it will clear all the data from the device.
An observation... I found that handling them effects the temp (even for a very short period of time), heats them up. Plugging them into the computer really effects the temp. While this makes it sound like the device is very sensitive, I also found it takes awhile for it to come to back down to room temp. Yea I don't get it either, (sensitive yet slow). In the computer it would heat up to about 79... then it would take almost 30 minutes to get back to 70 degrees. (I have the data to prove it; it's a data logger; lol)
I would purchase again... Haven't had them long enough to test the battery life.

I initially bought three to monitor 12VDC refrigerators while traveling. The unit used with frozen items seems to "work" but the internal clock is not working well, the sampling is discontinuous or stops (now trying to see if this is a timer issue or something else). The data are incorrect and useless. Regardless, the other two units are still working and I did purchase a replacement. Still, I'm concerned for anyone using these to monitor costly shipments of perishable goods. Perhaps if the internal clock gets more than a few seconds out of synchronization with the computer used to program / download data one should retire the unit. The price is reasonable, so I'm still going to give it four stars (with some reluctance)
UPDATE: Don't trust the battery charge indicator on the LCD screen. Remove the battery and test the voltage between deployments or every couple months. I checked the voltage on my "bad" unit and found the voltage at 2.5 V (from the 3.0V measured from a new battery). From what I've read about these batteries, they are nearly depleted at 2.6V and so I'll be replacing any battery below 2.7 volts or in use more than 6 months.

Have had the data logger for a year. The data accuracy is adequate for general usage. Software takes some time to get use to. Exported files to Xcel format and could open with my "Open Office" software with no problems. Biggest negative is that manufacture says that recording at 15 minute intervals at "normal temperatures" the battery should last a year. NO, NO, I used the recorder to record every 2 hours and the temperature never got above 90 or below 60 Fahrenheit and the battery life was NEVER longer than 10 weeks.

Worked with company but because of language differences we were unable to get the device to work. Returned it.
10 days later....
Company contacted me after posting this review and offered to send me a model RC-5+ (vice RC-5). This model does not require a device driver and works flawlessly so far. Just download the app and plug it in. I suggest if you have a Mac that you purchase the RC 5+ model. I really appreciated the spirit of the company in reacting to the review.
20 days later...
Success. Worked with the company through several versions of the driver. They are in China and I in the U.S., yet we communicated and got the job done. Highly recommend the company! I would still suggest the RC 5+ model as it does not use a driver.

I bought 2 RC-5 temperature loggers on June 24 and downloaded the required software. One does exactly what I need. It communicates with the software, accepts parameter settings, stops recording on software command, starts recording on 4-sec left-button push, clears memory on receiving new parameter settings, allows data download to Excel for external processing and display. As other reviewers noted, the internal thermistor reaches ambient temperature only after a lag of 15-25 minutes. I use that one regularly. I need two.
The second worked half way, ie, it didn't work. It displayed correct temperatures, recorded under factory default settings, and downloaded to the software. Unfortunately, it completely ignored commands from the software (eg, setting the clock to something other than 00:00 on 1/1/2012).
I returned the defective one and ordered two more (7/18). Both defective in the same way. Returned them. Ordered two more (7/26). Both defective. Returned them. Perhaps I randomly received 5 units from one bad batch. After months to let inventory clear, I ordered two more (11/18). Both defective. Returning them.
The first one still works perfectly. I still need two. Four-letter word.
Amazon should remove this product from catalog.

Looking for a good backpacking thermometer? This is it. Weighs nothing, and has a slot to secure it to a pack. The software is a bit wonky and the instructions are clearly a direct translation from Chinese, but understandable if you think about it for a minute. Seems to be pretty accurate, it was always within a degree of two different digital cooking thermometers I have that read to the nearest degree. Reads the current temp when the > button is pushed, and you can cycle thru to see the low/high temps.
The battery cover on mine was in pretty tight, but worked easily once removed--I recommend using a nickel or a quarter, NOT a screwdriver. Remember 'lefty loosey--righty tighty' or counter-clockwise to open. A firm but gentle pressure gets it moving. Be sure the little tabs are in the right place when you try to close it up. Didn't have any problems once it was open the first time. Others have had problems with seals/waterproofness, but all the seals on mine are perfect, and I don't plan on taking it swimming. I use a small piece of tape to secure the USB cover--the friction fit will hold it, but not securely.
So, not perfect, but for the price, pretty close.

Data logger is exactly as promised. Easy to use, software and documentation was provided on a mini-CD with the logger. The software (v2.0) is adequate and the export function to Excel works fine. I've used the logger with both my desktop and my laptop without issue. I've been recording the ambient temperature at my computer desk, and the results have been interesting. We don't use airconditioning, so the temps at my desk are pretty reflective out the outside temperatures. Over the last six weeks the temps have ranged from a low of 60 to a high of 87 (F) and the daily variances are plain to see in the graph the software plots. I have it set to record a sample every 10 minutes, with a data set to date of 6685 samples out of an available 32000. My intended use is to measure temperatures at our mountain cabin, and I figure that with a sample interval of 15 minutes I should be able to manage well over a six month span. Which is probably about all the battery should last anyway.

This little device is awesome! I use it to test medical refrigerators and freezers. It really comes in handy in troubleshooting the end users. I hear things like "Oh my god, my refrigerator sucks and is always out of temperature." When I hear this, after I verify the temperature is correct, I throw this baby in there and lit is sit and record the temperature for 24 to 48 hours. After that, I pick it up and download the graphs. I then export the graph into a nice professional looking report and present that report to the end user. You can't argue with data!

Inexpensive, simple to use, excellent software to evaluate the data. You hold the button for 5 seconds to start the recording put the cover over the USP connector and record the temperature of whatever you want using their parameters or change the parameters with their easy to use software. When you have finished recording put the recorder USB connector into your computer, open the software and hit download. In seconds you can graph the data or see the data in a list format that can be exported to Excel. I used it to record the temperature in my freezer.

I've had this for 2+ years. A decent temp logger but a relatively short battery, especially a low temps. Compared to a calibrated Lascar EL-USB-1, it was 3.4 F high in a wine cooler after 24 hours of stabilization. Luckily, the software allows for a correction factor, to it was easy to fix.
The desktop software is pretty basic. It can a be a bit buggy and it is sometimes takes several tries to erase the data on the logger.
Pros:
Consistent Temp readings. You can enter a correction factor against a calibrated source.
Cons:
Short battery life, especially in freezers. Desktop software can be buggy .

Great product while it lasts. Mine worked for 4 months and then it was unrecognizable to all my computers. It now reads as 'unrecognized device'. Reloading the program and updating drivers does nothing, I think the cheap CH340G usb chip they use died. Any attempt to contact customer service (i have three times) has replied with "update to new software". That does not fix a faulty board/chip. Overall, very disappointing and if you buy one don't expect the company to stand behind it or support it.

This little data logger is pretty cool! It is really basic but does a great job. I used it first day to check my fridge, set it up, put in in there, pulled it out the next day and bam, there is the data! A lot of reviews say the software is poor, I disagree, the software is very basic (dowloaded from their website) but it works really reliably. It allows you to very easily export to Excel which was my goal anyway, from there you can slice and dice the data and graph as you please. I guess I would rather have the basic, reliable, software than something complex, after all it's a temperature logger, it's just a bunch of data anyway. Also in regards to support, I did contact them with a question, obviously China based, and they were extremely helpfula nd quick via email. Highly recommended!

Had some problems with Windows 10, had to install up to date USB-UART driver from silabs.com.
Got working under Linux with Python package: "pip install elitech-datareader". Put yourself in the dialout group so you don't have to sudo all the time.
Now that I have it all working, the landlord seems to have turned up the heat.

This appeared to be simple device but no so. I am experienced bit both the PC and the Mac for many years. I couldn't even get the downloaded program for the Mac to install. I then tried the PC with the supplied disk. It installed and would set permitters but not find data. The software is not user friendly as other reviews have indicated I thought I could handle it but failed. The device is a great idea wish I could have used it.

This has been excellent for both determining the calibration of our home thermostats (which turn out to be as much as 2-3 deg. F off in some cases) and tracking temperatures in areas that experience extremes (e.g. our back sun porch). One minor concern: Once you turn off the recording, you can only reset it to start again by connecting it to a computer. Great price, too. Documentation is a little dicey (some sounds like it was translated, maybe from Chinese.) Didn't use the software it came with; downloaded the current version from their US website.

Have used this since Oct 2016 to document problems with an RV refrigerator. So far we have convinced two different RV service centers to purchase and use this device also, for the same purpose.
We only have Mac OS computers in our house, and when we recently upgraded to OS 10.12 (Sierra) we began having kernel panics (crashes) every time we plugged in the USB logger. So I began corresponding with Elitech sales (sales@elithechus.com) and they were able to work with their tech group in China to produce a Mac OS driver that works with OS Sierra.
This logger now works perfectly with the latest Mac OS.
Great product--if you have any concerns about your fridge or freezer temps (possible public health hazard) buy this and use it--you can document temps every 15 minutes over several days (we have done this for a week).
Highly recommended and very customer friendly!

This was just what I was looking for to record temperature for a project I was working on, and I tried to install the included software (on Win 8 machine) that is actually needed to configure the data collector. I continued to get a persistent error message during the installation process, and couldn't find any info on the website to resolve the issue. Also the battery cover wouldn't close completely due to a defective o-ring ... so I ended up returning the data collector for a refund.

The temperature is off by a few degrees. In addition, installation of the software on a mac was a nightmare. Initial installation of the driver, provided on the web, led to a crash of the computer whenever I plugged in the device, and it was difficult to find the correct driver. Many other users have reported on this problem in the past, so it's very odd that this problem persists for so long. In fact, a couple of months later, I needed to reinstall the driver on a new mac laptop - and found and that the appropriate driver was not even available.

Very nice Item that works well. As some have mentioned, it is not easy to find the software that needs to be installed on the computer, in my case a macbook pro, but thankfully others pointed me in the right direction so I will do the Same: [...] . You need to install two items: the data logger software and the import software, both of which are bundled in the downloaded package but must be installed individually. Took me awhile to realize this and I was frustrated that the data was not getting imported-smooth sailing once I corrected my error.

This little device will give you much data. When exported to a spreadsheet where you can amplify that data into a wealth of information about the temperature of the area you are measuring over a period of time. I like that you can adjust the sample points (using your computer).
For me, my best use was with my refrigerators and freezers. Make sure you keep them as cold as recommended without overdoing it and donating your hard earned money to the utilities company.

I am an IT guy. I was convinced that my Server Room was too hot. I was having problems convincing management that money needs to be spent on HVAC to cool that room. I purchased this out of my own pocket to make my point. I set it to record and moved it to different spots around the room to log temperatures. I would leave it in each location for about 10 days and make a notation on when and where each move of the device occurred. I was able to gather enough valuable data to make a case for improvement. For the price this is a great little gadget.

Nice looking device, but was useless to me.
The proprietary software is far more complicated than necessary. After leaving this at a remote home that I was wanting to monitor, i was unable to get any readings from the device. I am not sure if it was because of the 2 minute discrepancy with the time on my laptop, the monitoring was not started correctly, or the device was not working properly.
When I tried to get a reading, I was told that there was a discrepancy with the time. After I reset it, the memory was either cleared or never recorded.

It worked well and was very easy to set up. I wanted to monitor the temperature in my garage over the winter. First I compared to response to other thermometers and it matched well. Then I left it in the garage for a few months. After plugging it into my PC a nice plot of temperature over time was displayed automatically and could easily be correlated to outside temperature. And all at a great price.

It gathers the data I need but there are some outliers I can't explain. It is in a central location of a storage locker with a moderate temperature but the occasional spike gets registered. It is positioned under the light bulb but I have a security camera also monitoring the spot and at the time of the spikes the light is usually off. I normally just throws these out in my analysis but just an observation on the performance of the device. I am extremely happy with the size and battery performance, plus the software was much easier to install than I was lead to believe. Shipping didn't take long and the packaging was well put together.
