As a pure turntable this is adequate; it's quite lightweight and plasticky, but the platter is aluminium and it uses a moving magnet cartridge so it's better than the really cheap USB devices on the market. I'm converting a stash of old records that were never played on a proper hi-fi from new, so many aren't in great condition and it would be a waste to invest in a better quality turntable.
Where this scores is the sheer convenience of recording directly to a USB device; no need to have the laptop connected until you're ready to process the resulting mp3's. It suits me to record a batch, then clean them up in comfort without being tied to the turntable.
There is a downside though - on mine there's a slight whistle in the background of all recordings which is absent when passed through the Behringer box. That's why I've given it four stars, but it's only a minor point because most of that noise can be removed using Audacity.
Which brings me to the software; I haven't even opened the CD sleeve, especially given the reviews on here. I'd already found my way round Audacity (which is a free download) and I highly recommend you do the same. It looks complicated but the online help is excellent and I find I only need a few of the tools (Click Removal, Noise Reduction and some of the fade-in / fade-out options, with occasional use of 'Repair').
Note that there is a phono pre-amp built in so this can be connected to a modern aux / line-in socket, but the pre-amp can be switched off if you want to feed into a traditional 'phono' input.
There is NO USB output in the conventional sense; you would need something like the Behringer to do that, e.g. if you wanted to record at a different bit-rate or to anything other than mp3. If that's what you intend to do I'd recommend that you spend the money on a standard turntable and forget the USB bit (hifi turntables often don't have a pre-amp, but the Behringer UFO202 is an alternative converter which will do the job).
If you're just looking to resurrect your old records, or to clear them away to make space this turntable is more than up to the job and far more convenient than a simple USB output.
The Denon also comes with a sub port so I can rip old vinyls to MP3 . I've installed the software but not tried it but the software looks good not noddy like on an ion player I have which only works if plugged directly into a computer usb.
Now to the sound, not myth to say other than very good indeed for the money, mid and high tones all good, bass seems a little lighter than listening to cd through same system though changing the bass on the amp sorted this. Overall this is a good piece of kit for the money and probably best amongst the three units I've mentioned, in fact the Marantz seems to be identical to the Denon but withou the power switch so iTunes's they use the same chassis. The exertior case feels light and plasticky but only noticeable when setting up and lifting out of the box. Once in place seems absolutely fine. Great to be able to listen to my vinyl again and I've found that I'd listen to a whole album one side at a time.
A few observations, however: the tone arm lift is too small, meaning it's very hard to place it gently onto a record, and the Trans Music Manager Software is rubbish, refusing to work most of the time. Also, why not have an option to record the LP in WAV format for higher quality (but all USB turntables I've seen lack this feature). My suggestion is to transfer files to your PC, and use the free "Audacity" software instead - it's an excellent program and very easy to use after the initial half hour.
Recommended.
Haven't tried recording to USB yet, but I bet it's easier than hooking a turntable direct to a PC, which I have tried in the past and was very testing!
UPDATE March 2014 - it plays slightly too fast so every song is in a slightly higher key, and obviously faster, than it should be. As a muso with professionally tuned instruments this is enough to be noticeable and annoying. Wrote to Denon who say it can't be adjusted so back it goes for replacement. Wonder if the replacement will be any better.......
ORIGINAL REVIEW
At long last I decided to get rid of my lovely but old-fashioned (and largely unused due to it being housed in a cupboard) stacking separates sytem and get something that I could plug and play with my CD and Aux-only micro system - and this fits the bill perfectly. The built in Phono equaliser (effectively a pre-amp) removes the need for a traditional dedicated phono input, it's a respectable brand and it works straight out of the box. OK, not the most substantially built piece of equipment but at the price it's a very good purchase in my view. And a great excuse to return to lots of 12 inch square, thin Xmas pressies this year - Dark side of the Moon, Abbey Road, Stones Greatest Hits etc - all sound somehow more authentic when you have the physical pleasure of taking the record out of its sleeve and watching it go round. A couple of side benefits - I can read the sleeve notes again after 20 years of squinting at CD covers, and because you can't really skip tracks on a record you tend to listen to the thing all the way through, in the order the artiste intended! So if you want a practical, good value solution to that urge to get your old vinyl out of the loft, this is for you. And I haven't even got round to the 'recording from record to MP3 capability' bit which is a further bonus for those rare records that never made it to CD. Highly recommended.
