I'm a bit perplexed to read the 1-star review citing "washed out colors" with no attempt to check on the multitude of color adjustment options and preset (and then of course just as quickly recommends an obscure monitor brand to purchase instead). I bought the monitor with a Dell Studio XPS with Windows 7, and couldn't be happier.The monitor has three different inputs: VGA, DVI-D and HDMI. You can actually leave different inputs attached (e.g. computer and DVD player, or multiple computers) and switch them at the control panel. The monitor also has an array of preset color modes: standard, multimedia, game, warm, cool and custom. Perhaps the other reviewer simply was unaware of these features, but depending on the modes his monitor is set, and the usage, he may not be seeing optimal colors. For example, the "Cool" mode creates a very different look than the "multimedia" mode.I use the monitor with Photoshop for photography editing and flyer design. So color range is important to me and from my perspective the colors are vivid and accurate -- not washed out. Some people expected hyper-saturated colors in their video games and movies, and this effect can be achieved by modifying settings, if it's wanted.When I'm not using the monitor for work, it's big enough (and wide enough) to become an HD movie screen, so I get the best of both worlds: a large format monitor to do graphics work, and a screen large enough to watch and enjoy movies.I purchased an adapter on ebay to use the monitor with an articulating monitor arm, and it looks great. The other thing I like is the ability to flip the monitor on its side and use it in vertical mode, great for documents.

Very happy with this so far. No issues, beautiful display, easy to set up. Doesn't come with HDMI or dvi cables but that isn't a big deal.

Been using my Dell ST2421L Monitor for a couple of months. So far it's been great. I'm using it as a primary monitor hooked up to my 13" MacBook Pro with an mini HDMI to DVI connector. Colors are very nice. Have not tried any of the controls yet so can't comment on them. Like the fact that it is an LED monitor as it is very efficient. Have no complaints. Great monitor for the price.

PROS: It's a big huge monitor, with tons of space to work with. It's cheap. It's got a sharp 1080p picture. Good colors. No mouse ghosting. VGA, DVI, and HDMI ports. The whites are REALLY clean whites. Light/Easy to carry. Monitor itself looks good, too.CONS: The stand, while strong, isn't very stable, so that my monitor shakes when I bump my desk. No bells or whistles (i.e. USB ports, card reader, speakers, swiveling, rotating, height adjustment, etc.). The blacks aren't really that dark; Compared to my old Dell, they're quite gray.Altogether, I find that it's a super monitor for the cheap price it's offered for. Good for everything but graphic designers and hardcore gamers.

I bought two of these and use them for a dual monitor set up. I am not a monitor expert but I can tell you the picture looks great. They have an on screen menu that makes adjustments easy to use. Most everything is done for you automatically though. The only downside for me was that they do not have the holes in the back to mount an arm. Other then that they are great.

Quite simply, I bought Dell because of the anticipated quality behind the name. Wrong. It's not that the product is poor or lacking; rather, that it is very average. I expected very good imagery...what I have is very average. Buying Dell over some unknown brand does not provide any benefit. The only certainty is that you are overspending.

For the price, this is a good general usage monitor: Web surfing, document writing, emails, etc. - Pretty much anything you need to do as long as it isn't viewing or editing images or video. As others have mentioned, the monitor is bright - light-bulb in your face bright. Turn down the brightness and the colors fade dramatically and the overall viewing becomes more difficult. The display is as inconsistent as reviewed: a full screen image of a solid color (say red) will look red on top and pink at the bottom. Moving up/down or side to side and the color changes. The base is also phoned it - no up / down and the tilt is minimal. Insofar as the size, I though I would enjoy the real estate more, but when not used for images/video, it is kind of too big for a maximized window, but not big enough for two side by side - that particular issue is more a personal one than an issue with the monitor itself. So, for the price its a good general usage monitor, but keep looking if you're planning on graphic editing.

As a college student majoring in Graphic design screen real-estate is crucial. I pick up this monitor for $189 at Staples, brought it home and hooked it up to my 17 inch MacBook Pro and its phenomenal. The colors are extremely accurate after calibrating and the backlighting is extremely even. There is no backlight bleeding or nothing. Overall its a great quality screen for the price and the 1920 X 1080 resolution is a very nice benefit. It give me ample room to work in InDesign and Photoshop.This is a must buy.

The ST2420L monitor came with my Dell XPS Windows 7 computer that I bought through Costco a couple of months ago. The computer is good, I think, though I'm still not comfortable enough with Windows 7 to tell. The monitor though, despite the good review here and elsewhere, is terrible, in my opinion. It's OK for text, though too bright even at the lowest setting, but with pictures or movies, even with the brightness set at zero and the contrast set at 100, pictures are too bright and the contrast is lifeless. I can see this very plainly when I look at the same picture via my XP computer that uses a Costco Princeton VL1717 LED monitor. There's just no comparison: the image on the VL1717 is far, far superior. I'll have to get a different monitor, or just use my Princeton monitor on the new computer if and when I'm able to do everything in Windows 7 that I can do in XP. The Princeton monitor is smaller, but I find it big enough for me. I do find the ST2420L a little "excessively" big for me, though that's a minor point. The lifeless display of pictures and movies when compared with the Princeton monitor is the decisive disappointment. P.S., in response to Mr. Didier's insinuation, the Princeton monitor is not made anymore and was out of production when I wrote my initial review.

This monitor does not seem to have the 4 screw mounting holes - so cannot mount on typical monitor stands. The built in stand is very low.Other than that, picture quality is great for the price.

I have this connected to my new Mac Mini via HDMI, and so far I have been very impressed with the colours, contrats, and sharpness. Definitely a nice big screen for anyone looking for a decent monitor with HDMI and DVI.

Before upgrading our PC, we did quite a bit of research looking for the right monitor. Dell's monitors were one of our considerations, but we just weren't sure, until we were able to physically compare them side by side with other HDMI monitors. This monitor came home with us because of its crisp and clear images.Installation was a snap. The HDMI cable is the only we had to hook up. Set up was easy and we were up in running in no time! I have NO complaints about our choice. The screen is adjustable and the picture quality is phenomenal - making it perfect for everyday use as well as gaming and viewing movies.

The DELL ST2420L is relatively inexpensive and bright, but if you are looking for consistent color display, you have to look at more expensive displays. This one is based on TN LCD technology and has horrible off-axis viewing. Just move your head up and down 6" and you will see the screen display change dramatically. Even just sitting with your head still, the colors at the edges of the screen are different from those in the center. If you do photo editting of any sort, this lack of consistency will drive you crazy. If this is important to you, consider a monitor with IPS technology instead, such as the DELL U2412.

I wish I read Jeff Wilson's review before buying two of these monitors. The colors are washed out and the viewing angle is extremely limited. Having two of these monitors side-by-side was causing headaches after only 20 minutes of use. I tried modifying the display settings but it didn't seem to matter. If you are wondering why this monitor is so cheap, this is why. I'm currently packaging up both monitors and returning to Dell.

I just got this monitor yesterday on sale for $170 so I can't rate it on reliabilty but so far I love it. It is an excellent monitor for the price. I've watched a couple of movies on it and just played Skyrim and the quality is far superior to my last monitor which was a Hannspree (died after 5 months). Definitely recommended.
