I was never able to get the internet connection to work using PPPoE. My broadband password length is 6 characters and every time I open the settings page the password is defaulted to 8 characters (********). I had to set it in DHCP Client mode and then login on ACT portal every time I power on the router.
Also, the DHCP Static IP Configuration setting (DHCP Reservation) is not very good as it does not allow to set any IP that we want as it is restricted to the IP pool range and it does not allow us to select the device but instead enter the IP and MAC manually.
I had an older 150 mbps D-Link DIR-615 router that I bought in the US 10 years ago which I wanted to replace with this one as the wifi antennas were damaged and that device is working far better than this new one.
And there is no return policy on this item except replacement so do not buy this router if you want to connect using PPPoE.
The TP-Link router is a better alternative than this and it costs less too.
Update:
It has been two years now since my purchase and it is working absolutely fine. Zillions of bytes may have been passed through this beast and it is still strong.
Amazon: Kindly update the correct details of the product. The details are misleading.
Pros:
1.Very easy to install infact any noobs will be able to install it.
2.Internet speed remains almost as it is.
3.Range is great as it is fulfill my requirement ( install 3rd floor get connection 1st floor )
4.Very fast delivery with care and chap price (1 day)
5.Not heated after 3 day continuously running.
Cons:
1.Design is not matching as showing in this website.
2.Connection cable is too small, must placed near switch board.
So that's all from my end.
If you like it please follow.
Thanks.
The Amazon description for this switch is out of date. The current version of the product indicates that with the latest power supply it is up to 73% more efficient than similar non green D-link switches. Also worth noting is that the face plate on my unit is a silver color, not the white appearing face plate in the product photos.
I connected this switch on my work bench with a Kill-A-Watt power meter and with nothing else connected this 24 port beast is sipping just 3 watts. With five gigabit devices it is using a miserly 7 watts. Even fully loaded, according to the specs this switch will not use more than about 19 watts. The switch has features that will throttle down power consumption based on device connection speed, cable distance and whether a port is active or not. All of this means that you can build out a very robust home network without leaving something running 24X7 that is consuming a lot of power.
I was close to ordering the competing Netgear product (JGS524) however the Netgear has two fans in it (noisy and prone to failure) where as this D-Link switch is fanless! This is a big deal, as the fan is often the component that will go out over the long term with a product like this... not to mention the noise you will experience if you are anywhere near the device. The Netgear does have a "lifetime" warranty (and better warranty support) where as the D-Link has a 5 year warranty. With no moving parts, and if hooked up to high quality surge suppression the D-Link box should last for a very long time without problems.
Performance with this switch is excellent, I get rocket fast transport between all of my devices. It's worth noting that this is an unmanaged switch so you cannot break your network up into VLANs or do cable diagnostics, etc, with this switch. For its purpose though of providing a super fast home or small office network it is offering a tremendous value. T
Highly recommend it!
UPDATE 17 May 2013:
Still have the 4 switches running, and no problems with them.
Update Feb 25, 2014:
I still have the 4 switches running, and have had no problems with them. I have never had any of these switches get hosed-up where I had to power them down to reset them. They just work. I have them powered from UPS back up power systems which probably helps with their reliability.
Update March 31, 2015
I still have the 4 switches. Never have had a problem. I have them on a UPS and have never had one hose up since I first installed them.
Update April 18, 2016
First switch installed in 2011 and all are still working with no problems. They are powered by UPS and never get glitches or need to be power cycled. Great unmanaged switch!!
The previous one lasted for 3+ years without any issue and then it died, the warranty period was over so I didn't get it fix and considering the value it I thought to not to visit the service center even if they repair it for some cost.
Hence I decided to buy another, I bought the modem at the end of December 2019 and surprisingly, this particular model died by 16th of May 2020. As we got the Covid-19 situation, I decided it'd be best to avail D-Link's DDS Service which is bundled with this product.
Under DDS, D-Link is supposed to arrange for the replacement of your product at your home but to my surprise, I wasn't able to register for DDS at their website (all the other models were available to select except for this one) hence I decided to get in touch with their customer support, we exchanged mails for a week, they provided me with the contact details of their executive at service center who cut my call within 10 seconds and at the end I was left hanging in the middle by their customer support. I tried to report this at senior level but you just can't reach them through call or mail. I dropped a consumer complaint at D-Link's head office and they told me that the support for this Model has ended years back.
At the end I was left with quite a bad experience by D-Link, I know that I still can visit their service center here in Delhi and get my router fixed for no cost but then what's the point of them to advertise a product with a service which they can't even provide.
Therefore I bought a TP-Link modem for now because am trying my best to avoid going under such situation here in Delhi.
I hope this review is helpful for everyone.
My one complaint: What in the living **** were you smoking when you cut the corners on the port status LEDs? 6x4 when the ports are 2x12? Yes I can read the numbers. But this is the only switch I have encountered with a LED layout that has absolutely nothing in common with the physical ports. I guess it's in my closet now so I don't have to look at it but I'm calling you out on that nonsense, D-Link!
One feature I liked is that the ports are auto-detecting regarding whether a cable is a crossover or straight through, just like a more expensive switch. You can't manage this switch by forcing the the ports into a configured state (auto detect vs. or manually configured), but that would have been overkill for me.
My setup is an Apple Time Capsule (version 1) as my router and wireless. I'm using a straight-through cable to connect the D-Link switch to the Time Capsule, both of which are gigabit.
If this is the type of setup you're thinking of installing, this D-Link switch appears to be the perfect fit. I can only hope the reliability is better than the Linksys, but according to all the user reviews I've read during my research, this is the preferable unit.
Hope this helps!
NOTE: I'm revising this review after using the switch for several months now. Absolutely no problems, even though I've made changes to my network. The only thing I'd add to my original review is that the fan on the switch is a bit noisy. If you want this to be located in your office, be aware that the fan is always on and is audible. Other than that observation, I would still recommend this switch.
I used the rack mounting brackets and secured the switch under the basement stairs, and plugged in my network cables before the cable company came with the modem.
The basic set up is cable modem to a wireless router in the middle floor, and using only one of the outputs from the router, connect back to the switch, and from this switch to everywhere else.
This switch was so easy, the cable company came and hooked up their modem, I plugged in the "modem to router" line that I had already run, and didn't have to do any configuration whatsoever. Didn't even put in the CD Rom that shipped with the switch. It worked right out of the box.
I have a 12 and 13 year old that X-Box and Computer simultaneously, while the 3 year old watches a streaming movie from netflix, and Directv is even hooked in to this switch for the whole home set up. I can't speak to reliability yet, but it is fast, silent, and breeze to hook up.
Delivery is very quick
Installation software is good
Cons:
1. Seems that it is not a brand new, though packaging looked good. Reason: After 2 days attempt, realised that it has a pre configured software. After resetting the router, then I can configure it properly. Hence, it had been used in other place.
2. In our flat, signal is coming to adjascent room only, not in a room master bedroom if router is in drawing room.
Installation took no time at all. Plugged in the power, moved all my existing cables from the old 8 port hub to the this one and I was in business.
Performancewise, I have no complaints. Throughput is as expected. I've had it powered on for almost 2 months and not one power down/power up.
For the current price this is listed at, it is a bit on the high side. Mine was from the Warehouse Deals inventory and was significantly less expensive. For the current price I see listed, you can probably find a decent managed switch.
Amazon has been asking me to do so since last year so it's the very first review I am gonna leave for u all so that it's easier to get a slight idea about the product before buying. I mean we have some thick walls u can say made from British eras but still this one been working really well. This 2C one is really hard to set up if u don't have a prior idea about setting Wifi up and if u have broadband even before ur Router reaches to u then I would say go be ask for somebody who Is professional enough to fix it... Above all, it's been a really good experience with this router so it's recommended....
Thanx.
