Stunning film!
My husband got up early yesterday to watch the long version of this film and I left him to it,popping in just now and again in the name of housework. Third time of popping in when the film was about 15mins under way and that put pay to the housework for the following four hours - what an amazing film, one of the best I have ever seen. I would never have thought that a Chinese epic would have been my cup of tea but I was wrong and hope to see many more.

Great movie, great PQ
The first thing that you will notice is how gorgeous it looks. Colours are excellent and detail is also excellent.
As for the movie itself, I like movies like Troy and 300 and I also enjoyed this one. It shows some new tactis I never saw before (using shields with mirrors to blind enemy horses for example) and has a overall good cinematography. This version of the movie has the 2 parts of Red Cliff plus the original Mandarin 5.1 DTS HD mix, so this is the total package and the version you should buy.
As for the movie itself, I like movies like Troy and 300 and I also enjoyed this one. At around 4 hrs. 20 mins. this is a much more satisfying version, since it actually makes the storyline comprehensible, unlike the shorter cinema version. However, I would like to have seen the subtitles a little larger & displayed beneath the picture, instead of across the lower part of it. A truly spectacular film, beautifully photographed with impressive special effects. Occasionally mawkish with rather clumsy attempts at humour, it is well-acted on the whole & generally moving. Peter Jackson's influence on world cinema continues to be shown!

I love this movie.
This film is magnificent. What I love about Chinese films is the scale of them, they don't just do big, they do huge! If you don't like subtitles, give it a miss, there's not a word of English in it. The story is fantastic and the action is relentless. If John Woo has made a better movie I have no idea what it is, but I want to see it.

Red Cliff
The film is well made and the battle scenes are tremendous. I find the subtitles a little annoying as sometimes they come and go before you can absorb them. On first time viewing the characters become very confusing but I am sure that by second viewing they will become a lot clearer. On the whole a very entertaining film. I would think that it would be more enjoyed by men than women. Away from the battles the political scheming is intriguing. Nothing much changes in 800 years.

Wow What a movie
What a film. I knew nothing about it before buying but wow what a great choice. This is one of the best movies you will ever see. I know it is in Chinese with English subtitles but there honestly isn't too much dialogue and the action speaks for itself. The film is beautifully shot and the five hours of the extended version did not flag as the pace and interest in the film was well managed.

Quick Word/Warning on Its Region Coding & Subtitles
This is for sure a good film, but I gave this product 3 stars for 1 simple reason: The English subtitle is part of the pictures, which means there's no way for you get rid of it; that is a very disturbing thing for publishers to do on a blu-ray/DVD film product, and even more disturbing when you speak Mandarin and just want to watch it alone. Therefore, for that one factor, it's worth it to buy the all-region U.S. release of the film.
Nevertheless, this is also an all-region blu-ray even though only Region B is printed on the back cover and the discs.

A spectacle to behold
The approx. 4 hr 40 min. film is full of all the requirements you would want: war, love, mystery, intrigue, and so on. Beautifully done, even though there are many war scenes, it is full of aesthetics and very spiritual. As mentioned in some of the previous reviews...unfortunately the subtitles are very difficult to read due to the small writing and I had to rewind several times to see what was written. Even so, this is a film not to be missed.

a true blockbuster
I watched Red Cliff recently on tv, film 4, and I loved it, after reading some very helpful revues I decided to buy the special edition which is a hour longer than the tv version,as the subtitles are that fast sometimes you cant read the words fast enough,how ever it did not spoil the story,one disappointment was the first disc started to stick 1o mins before the end so I had to skip to the next scene.very pleased with amazon with the fast delivery service,would recommend. Ian.

Then, the rythm of the chinese language adds to the beauty and the poetry of the movie. Finally, the plot, the fights and battles choregraphies are extraordinary. Forget bad kung-fu fights, stupid dialogues and pretentious period movies (e.g Troy). With Red Cliff, John Woo maybe offers his most accomplished work so far ! A must-see.

a beautiful epic
Red Cliff is Special Edition is a 2 Disk Epic. Beautifully shot, with stunning locations and swordplay. The film captures the heart of a people, perhaps long gone ready to fight for honour, for others and to sacrifice it all in order to defeat domination. This is not an all out martial art film, but there are some awesome battle/fight scenes, it also captures music and art in a complete cultural experience.
A great buy, get it!!!!

Stark geschnitten + BD 2x kurz nach 2 Jahren nicht mehr lesbar
An sich ist Red Cliff ein toller Film, nur ist diese Version stark geschnitten. Hinzu kommt, dass ich die BD schon 2x gekauft habe (da es die Vollversion lange nicht gab) und die BD 2x nach etwas über 2 Jahren nicht mehr lesbar war. Mir ist das bei noch keiner anderen BD passiert.

Take my advise and purchase the special edition of this film the standard edition has too much missing.
This film is a must buy for all action film fans and the scenery is just jaw dropping, acting and story line are first class all that you would expect from a John Woo film.
I would have liked to have given this film five stars but no film is perfect..........but this is about as close as you can get.

Red Cliff blu ray
Great movie!.. Prior to the purchase of this product, I asked Amazon whether it would play in the U.S. I received a standard run-of-the-mill response that was "safe" (from the standpoint of Amazon)and basically indicated "no". It was one of those answers that was an answer without really answering the issue. As it turns out, Red Cliff (blu-ray) will play in the U.S. without any hitch using the PS3.

One of the greatest movies
The film is truly awesome in HD, I'm so glad I saw it for the first time on BluRay. The battle scenes are epic, and the plot is amazing. Although, like other reviews have said, the speech is fast, and therefore hard to read the subtitles at times, it is an easy chinese film to follow. It does take a while to watch, but every second is worth it. Red Cliff deserves 6 stars, not 5.
