7-8 (sony, canon ef)
Every photo you take with this lens between an aperture range of 1.8 to 3.2 will have the nice depth of field which makes the subject pop in any image.
I had to do photography for my cousin's engagement and all I had in my arsenal were a Canon SL2/200D (crop sensor), 18-55mm Kit lens (28-80mm in crop sensor) and a 75-300mm telephoto lens (120-480mm in crop sensor).
I knew very well that these lens and camera combination were not the best for a event photography. (trust me! I've tried! The results were not so great) and I was sceptical about renting lenses as I could not be as light headed as I usually am with my own lenses.
So, I ordered the 50mm f/1.8 lens on 26th April, 2019 and got it on 27th April, a day before the engagement ceremony (Kudos to Amazon delivery).
I tested the lens a day before the engagement and on the day of the engagement, 90% of the photoshoot was done with the 50mm prime lens with 18-55mm lens used only for wide angle group shots. The absence of image stabilisation is not an issue as the lens is light in weight.
So, yes, the nifty fifty is a one size fits all kind of lens. However, my camera had a crop sensor (1.5~1.6X), which means the 50mm was actually giving me the field of view of an 80mm focal length. This meant that I had to physically move around a bit to get the framing right. If you have a full frame camera, 50mm would have the field of view of a 50mm.
This field of view difference had me over thinking about whether to buy the 24mm f/2.8 (38mm in crop sensor) or the 50mm f/1.8.
I finally pulled the plug on the 24mm, bought 50mm because of the 1.8 aperture and decided to compromise on the field of view. Also, the 50mm STM had 7 aperture blades which meant the bokeh would be nearly rounded.
In the end, the pictures came out great and had that 'Professional Photographer Click' look to it, everyone loved it. This made the investment totally worth it.
The only drawback with this lens would be the auto focus. While it is silent because of the STM motor, it is not the fastest.
I did the entire day's photoshoot with Manual focus and the results were really good. So, I would suggest that you use this lens with manual focus only.
So, in conclusion, if you are person who wants a relatively inexpensive lens with nice bokeh and depth of field, this lens is just hard to beat.
(I will not be sharing photos from the engagement to protect the privacy of the people involved. But, I will share some unedited sample photos to give you an idea about the quality you get from the 50mm prime lens.)
Warranty registered and got it for 2 yrs as mentioned.
The Amazon packaging was neat and delivered fast at a small Xtra cost.
The product was available at a discount for Rs. 6651.00 on Amazon great India fest because of an sbi instant discount and the surprise came in the form an Amazon cash back of Rs. 739.00, thank you Amazon again for this wonderful initiative.
Overall a great buy.
The low light performance is decent but ultimately the video quality will depend on your camera sensor. (Unfortunately, I'm using the Canon 1300D which is 'not the best') For indoor shooting at night, you still have to set the ISO pretty high.
Lastly, this lens does not have optical image stabilization - you will need a tripod in most situations. (Especially if you plan on recording a video)
What I love:
-It's easy to install and comes with 2 lens caps (rear and front)
-the bokeh is awesome
-nearly half the size of the standard lens, light and portable.
The picture clarity is as expected.
Good to take photos in low light as the aperture is 1.8 shutter speed will be much faster.
Awesome bokeh effect while taking portraits.
Lightweight and handy. :)
The build quality could have been a little more better.
While docking we can feel the friction between the body and the lense
Auto-focus take some time in low lit conditions and manual focus bit tricky to use.
Overall a great product.
Recommended for portrait photography
I am into photography since 5 years and I think this lens would be a game changer for every beginner!
This lens is prime (no zoom) and have an F/1.8 with which you can create amazing portraits. This lens is not just for portraits you can use it for product, low light, street etc...
It is also a very budget lens priced around 8.5k so it's very useful for every beginner
A beginner can leaen how to frame on his own as it does not have any zooming and can learn clearly learn about depth of field as it allows the widest F1.8(in this budget)
50mm also considered as normal lens which will surely give the effect needed
*This is a full frame lens and gets a different focal length (I.e more than 50) when used on cropped sensors (I.e 50 x crop factor)
Overall it's a good go for beginners and semi professional photographers as it teaches many elements and allows your photographs to reach next level
This lens is not for pros because the focusing is not quick (no USM) it has got STM which is bit slower compared to USM
Regarding delivery
I have faced no problem and warranty card was also included in it. Delivery was before the expected date!
For indoor usage 25 mm or 30 mm lenses are better options.
Now coming to 50 mm lens, this lens gives amazing result on outdoor shooting conditions. Lower f value gives you superb background blur effect and you can do wonders with this lens of used judiciously.
Looking to the price this lens option is an excellent choice if you are learning photography or you are on your way to become professional photographer.
