Having used this camera now for about 6 weeks since buying it from Amazon, I can say that it is an excellent camera. I have tried shooting in all modes and have taken some pleasing photos in different conditions. I am using a Sandisk extreme III SDHC memory card and this works well. I have found that you will need to use rechargeable AA batteries in this camera because it literally eats standard batteries in no time at all. My only niggle is the fact that you cannot alter the optical zoom in movie mode but other than that I am more than pleased with my purchase.

This camera is easy to use and takes great pictures.
I really need to read the book, but that's how easy the camera is to use. I figured out the basics without looking at the manual.

Nice camera. Novice here, but I like the size, style, and easy user interface. I have just been taking pics and video using auto mode, but look forward to playing with the settings in the future. Pics and video come out very clear and vibrant. Camera does what it's supposed to do. Like the under $80 price very much. First camera I received had a hot pixel, so all images had a small white fleck midway down the right side. Return process was very easy, and I am now awaiting what I hope to be a problem free replacement from Amazon. No motion blur. I took a pic of my ceiling fan when it was on and the pic made it look as if it were stationary at the time the pic was taken. Will upload the pic if anyone wants to see. Good camera, IMO.

I picked this camera based on hundreds of online reviews, without ever holding it at a store, and love it. It has a fast shutter speed, is easy to use, even for talentless me, and has great features. My very favorite feature is the built in red eye removal, but I also like the Kids and Pets and Fireworks settings. I know there are better cameras out there, but not for this price, and I'm extremely happy with it.

I am an advanced photographer. My husband always wants to use my equipment. I'm not really eager to do that considering my equipment has cost me thousands of dollars -- and he wants to take it to the hunting camp :) in the dirt, on the stand, in the water, etc., etc.

So............I am loyal Canon user.

This camera had great reviews. Appeared to have a lot of the DSLR features and a bonus movie taking feature so I thought it would be a great "advanced function" camera for him.

He will use the auto mode most of the time to take pictures but I am slowly teaching him all of the other advanced functions that he can use on the camera.

When I have shown him what functions this camera has in comparison to my SLR and we have been quite impressed.

He loves this camera and for the price you get so many advanced functions it is well worth it.

And if you drop it at the hunting camp you are not out thousands of dollars so "it's a good thing."

i purchased the canon a1000is after my other powershot was stolen.i am a simi pro photographer and use a small camera when i cant take my big camera with me.this little camera is great.i can shoot close or far and still make 10x11 photos.believe me its well worth your money.you wontcatch me without my canon a 1000 is.good shooting

I loved this camera, although it has been surpassed by newer models. The 10x optical zoom was great, the flip-up flash meant never blinding kids in the school play by accident (or on purpose!), it fits easily in a pocket so you don't have to decide whether to carry it somewhere, the software/menus are simple, and the picture and video quality is great.

Unfortunately, this camera broke on me twice (the second time after a repair for which I paid $100 - a testament to how much I like this camera). What happened is that somehow it was turned on in my pocket by bumping something, and when the lens tried to open up, it got jammed. Any time this happens, your camera is dead.

A great camera, but don't buy it!

This is my first Digital Camera, and I am very happy with it. Ive had it for about 2 months now. It takes extremely sharp detailed pictures, which can easily be cropped and blown up and still retain their quality. The zoom is great, 10x optical and 40x if you add the digital zoom, although i normally wont go past the optical unless there's good lighting. It takes great pictures both indoors and out, but when indoors you will have to use the flash very often, unless the room is well lit.The video quality is not the greatest, but a very nice feature to have. You can zoom optically before you hit record, but can only zoom digitally while recording. The battery life with AA Alkaline batteries is very poor but with NiMH Recharbales it's great. I only get about a half hour of on time and 30 pictures off of one set of Alkaline batteries. Take everyones advice and get 2 sets of NiMH Rechargeable batteries off the bat they work wonders. I get over 200 pictures and several hours of on time from one charge. I bought Sony Quick Battery Charger with 4 AA Ni-MH Rechargeable Batteries as a pack and works great. The camera is very self explanatory and easy to use out of the box, and with a little reading the advanced options are easy enough to get the hang of. Some people were saying that when you change memory cards the batteries fall out, but that hasn't been an issue, if u get a large 2G or 4G sd card you wont have to change them very often, and just be careful. The one and only thing i don't like about this camera is the long delay between shots when using the flash. When using the flash it takes 5-8 seconds to recharge before you can take another shot. I don't know how long this recharge period would be on other digital cameras. However its not a very big deal and all of the other great things about this camera make up for it ten fold. A great camera well worth the money.

This is an excellent camera, the speed (combined with a fast memory card) is very good. The picture quality is amazing, especially when you zoom into the detail on a 14MP picture. I really liked taking pictures of old tall buildings and then zooming in at home the see the details on spires etc... This is good for cathederals and churches.

This is the only Canon Ixus in this class that has "full manual" mode, which was good for doing some special shots at night.

However, you do need a big fast memory card to get the full potential out of it. But a 8GB(class 6) should be more than enough for most people.

This camera has an amazing zoom on it. We chose this camera over the Rebel because of the zoom. The only flaw we have discovered thus far is the lens cap is a little difficult to get on. Great camera!!!

This camera is everything I wanted in a camera for a seasoned amateur photographer. The response time is incredible, and the zoom is sharp and fast, enabling me to get closeup in a matter of less than a millisecond. Having RAW capabilities has expanded my abilities to go a step further in my photographic editing skills. Highly recommended to anyone looking for an alternative to a digital slr with multiple lenses to lug around.

The camera was easy to use from the start. More time is needed to use all the features to their fullest. The zoom range is excellent. It is easy to take to a variety of activities, especially for a camera with these features.

We have enjoyed our Canon although the menu is not so user friendly...a bit complicated at first but after reading and figuring things out, it's fine. The optical zoom is very good and the 9 megapixels are just right. We're satisfied and would recommend it to others.

I own 3 Canon(2 portable, 1 SLR D40) but I am really surprised with the pictures of this current one. Pictures are sharp, bright color and excellent contrast. Some of its are really better or equal my D40.

Records video and takes nice pictures for a point an shoot. As a professional photographer carrying a large camera isn't always an option for gatherings of friends and family. The menu's are well laid out and simple enough so anyone can pick the camera up and play. You can view the photos on the screen without having to turn the actual camera on which is nice. The zoom is perfect for most indoor use as well as long enough for taking outdoor pictures. The flash doesn't pop up on it's own which i personally like as it gives me the choice of using it or not. Runs for about 2 weeks (used almost every day) on 2 AA rechargeable NiMH batteries from Energizer. I use an 8gb SDHC card from SanDisk and love it. My only gripe is that when it came new in box there was a screw missing from the back of the camera. Nothing that would be a show stopper, I just can't believe Canon would miss something like that. (Which is why I use Nikon DSLR's. :) That was in jest for those of you Nikon haters.)

This camera was rated a "best buy" by Consumer Reports in the point and shoot category. I found it on Amazon at a very favorable price. Delivery was just as promised. Although the camera has many features that would appeal to someone who wants to exercise a high degree of control over picture-taking, it is very simple to use in point and shoot mode. I am quite satisfied with this purchase.

Just a note to anyone consider the A590IS camera. I bought mine and tested for 3 hours. This is to replace my older 3.2 Megapixel Canon A510 (Which is not a perfect camera, but quite a good one!)

Short story: Stay away from the A590IS, it is not better than the 3 year old A510! Very disappointed at Canon for putting out this subpar product.

CONS:

-Pictures are soft, almost out of focus. Compared A/B with the 510 on same shots identical settings at 3 Megapixels. 510 wins hands down.
-Plastic case instead of metal. Cheap and light feel. If it falls, it is toast.
-Screen is larger, but also are the pixels. So, same resolution at a larger screen = very poor poor LCD image quality.
-Most of the advanced features, such as focus review etc, rely heavily on the LCD, which is of poor quality, so the new features are useless!
-Uninmpressed by the Image Stabilization feature. But maybe I was expecting miracles here.
-No Panorama mode. (510 had a stitch mode where you could panel Left to Right and overlap the pics). I used this a lot in the old camera.
-Batteries and SD card in same compartment. When I take the SD card out, the batteries tend to fall out. Its just a cumbersome process!
-The so called 8 megapixels in this CCD are a bit of a joke. There wasn't a huge difference between taking a 3 megapixel pic and stretching up in Photoshop, compared to the same pic at 8 Megapixel. Very soft!

I love this camera. It takes very good pics and very easy to use. Just what I wanted. Would recommend it. I also want to say that Amazon is a very good company to buy from. I did have to return the first camera I ordered. Amazon sent me out another one right away and was able to print out a return label online sent it back with no problems. I also recommend Amazon for your shopping pleasure.

I bought this as a first 'proper' digital camera (i.e. not a mobile phone camera). It does everything that i expected of it - and it's really compact and stylish. Operation is fast and intuitive. The battery lasts a long time (a week long holiday without recharge). It has a viewfinder, which was one of the things I was looking for. Picture quality is fantastic and, not being an expert, I've simply left the camera in Auto mode the whole time. I cannot fault this camera at the price.

Don't buy SX10IS!

This is an excellent camera for the money. We were previously using a Canon PowerShot S30 (3.2 MP) for many years, and it was time for a new one. Of course, considering our old camera, any modern camera would be an improvement, but this one in particular is fantastic for many reasons. I have large hands, and hate the puny "cigarette pack" cameras with the tiny buttons. This one is large and the side grip (on the right side of the camera while holding it) is very comfortable and secure - even though it has a wrist strap I know I'll never drop it. Add to that that I've taken several photos and movies with it without even opening the instruction manual, I'm very happy with it. I believe after reading the manual I'll be able to do almost anything with it. Perfect camera for the casual, "point and click" user.

More pluses: Uses AA batteries (I use rechargeables but you could use ordinary batteries if you get stuck on a trip for example), takes SD memory cards (very common, all modern PCs, printers, and even some TVs use them), takes great digital mini-movies (about 100meg per minute, with a large SD card you can take respectable home movies)

On the minus side, obviously this is intended for the casual/novice user, makes a great family camera, but of course if you're a pro you'll want something more (and probably wouldn't be reading this anyway). It doesn't have a viewfinder, but I certainly don't miss it, the screen is large and bright. Also, if you're looking to put this into your pocket, it won't fit, so you'll need a small camera bag.

The only real problem I had with this was when I made a movie of my son's ninth birthday party, the candles caused an odd reflection in the movie - probably something to do with the lens. He ended up with 9 little dots around his face, even though the cake was in front of him. Not a real big deal, it came out kind of cool.

Bottom line: Strongly recommended for family use or if you're looking for a great value for the money. Having owned a Canon before this new one is great and I know I'll buy Canon again when it's time to replace this camera. Recommend going to a "brick and mortar" store and trying it out, then come back and buy it on Amazon - their price cannot be beat! And with super-saver shipping, it got here in 3 days!

Excellent picture quality and level of detail. The 10 Megapixel capability is well correlated with lens performance and does make a difference in pictures of large groups. Great movie clips quality too. I was a bit uneasy initially about the battery life but, using the viewfinder as primary means for framing, they last for about 250 pictures. I wish the optical zoom was more powerful - that's why the rating penalty. Otherwise, great!

I'm sad that I've had this camera for too long to send it back to the store. It has a very limited dynamic range and if there is any sunlight in the picture, light-colored objects in the sunlight have no detail. If I change the exposure, the shadows become impenetrably black.

I like this camera for the price. It actually has a lot more features than we use. I also bought it because it has the same memory card as my older power shot. One negative, the on/off switch is intermittent. The only other minor thing with this purchase is that it took longer to get here than any other purchase I have made on Amazon.

Still, as long as the on/off switch doesn't stop working, I think this is a great camera for the money.
