Canon's PowerShot A550 is a simple, inexpensive 7-megapixel camera, and that's all it wants to be. While it has some nice features, it doesn't offer any outstanding, unique aspects that put it above any other camera in the field, and that's just fine. Good performance and solid images are all a camera needs to succeed, and the A550 delivers just that.
Though not quite small enough to slip into your jeans, the A550 is still comfortably compact. At 7.4 ounces and 1.7 inches thick, the camera can fit easily into most jacket pockets and bags. The camera's body has an L-shaped design found on most of Canon's PowerShot A series, giving it a generous grip. The buttons are large and comfortable, and they're laid out logically along the back and the top of the camera.
The A550 is a fairly nondescript camera, with few outstanding or unusual features. Its most notable attribute is its 35mm-to-140mm-equivalent 4X zoom lens, which gives it just a bit more range than the 3X lenses typical of most budget cameras. It has a smaller-than-usual 2-inch LCD screen that is augmented by an optical viewfinder for shooting in dim light. Besides those features, the A550 has the standard handful of scene presets and image adjustment settings, including a 30fps VGA (640x480) movie mode and a pleasantly unexpected 60fps QVGA (320x240) high-speed movie mode. Finally, like most Canon PowerShot A-series cameras, the A550 conveniently takes AA batteries.
The A550 performed well in almost all of our Labs' tests. After its brisk start-up time of 1.5 seconds, we could snap a shot once every 1.7 seconds, a great improvement over previous PowerShot A5x0 cameras. Unfortunately, with the onboard flash enabled, that time more than tripled to 4.9 seconds per shot. The camera's shutter was responsive, lagging less than 0.5 seconds with our high-contrast target and a modest 1.2 seconds with our low-contrast target. Burst mode was also pleasantly fast, managing 51 full-resolution shots in 31.4 seconds for a rate of 1.6 frames per second.
Photos looked pretty good, though they're marred by overprocessing and fringing in spots. Colors reproduce well, though indoor photos shot with automatic white balance come out very yellow, a common problem for most snapshot cameras. Noise is low up to ISO 400 sensitivity, where a fine grain starts to appear. Images are predictably noisy at ISO 800 sensitivity, with speckling damaging fine details and softening colors. ISO 800 is usually reserved for low-light and high-speed shooting, and everyday snapshots shouldn't have many problems.

This camera is too slow from shot to shot. I have children and do not like this camera at all do to this fact. If you need fast shots, this is not the camera for you!! I'm going back to Kodak.

This is a nice camera overall. My only negative comments are: No viewfinder, Not a very well written instruction book. I write instruction books for a living and this book would be unacceptable to my employer.

I have to admit that this was the first digital camera I have owned and I wish I had bought one sooner. Some of the first pictures I took were at Bellingrath Gardens and they came out great. The manual that came with the camera was easy to understand, even though there are some functions that I will probably never use. If all else fails I just switch to the easy function and point and shoot. It couldn't be simpler. I like the fact that the camera uses 2 AA batteries, which you can get anywhere. I took about 250 picures before I changed the batteries. I think this would be a good camera for anyone who is a novice like myself.

I bought two machines at Amazon.com (one for me and one as a gift) and, well, no complaints about the shipping and absolutely no complaints at all about the machines.
I'm not a pro but I always wanted a cost-effective deal that would allow me to take better pics of landscapes during my trips. This machine has good and firm grip, crispy quality pictures, awesome movies with the zoom capability and great sound. It isn't a portable camera, so you better consider buying a nice case (not the Canon one) for the camera itself and all the stuff you might need (extra batteries, memory card, cables and so on).
I suggest anyone that is interested in buying this camera to check first for some serious review before going ahead. It is good to know that a new model is now available (SX1 IS) with new features.

IT'S AT CANON REPAIR RIGHT NOW. I HAVE HAD THIS CAMERA ALMOST EXACTLY A YEAR, EASY TO USE, NICE PICTURES, THEN THE "LENS ERROR PLEASE RESTART CAMERA" STARTED POPPING UP AND THEN "PLEASE REPLACE BATTERIES" EVEN AFTER NEW ONES WERE IN THE CAMERA. I'M JUST GLAD THESE "PROBLEMS" HAPPENED BEFORE THE ONE YEAR WARRENTY WAS OVER - IT WAS CLOSE.

I bought this camera a month back... picture resolution is really good and optical zoom of 10x is what I was looking for in a small camera.. I could capture few nice images using this camera... It's definitely a camera worth having..

Do not buy this camera for $699.00! I bought it about 2 years ago for around $250-$260 or so and the sensor just up and died a few months ago! It was a pretty nice camera while it lasted, but 2 years is disappointing for longevity. I'm seeing that more and more with the newer point and shoot cameras. It's hard to know what to buy as they don't seem to last very long. We have an older Olympus Sylus 2.1 MP that we got in early 2001 and it's still working fine. You can buy several other cameras for less with just as good, if not better, features and image quality. Shop around and do some research!

This is an excellent camera, one that his very easy to use and takes beautiful photos. It is also very sturdy. Amazingly, the video function is nearly the equivalent of our sony mini-dv videocam. The camera is lightweight, small enough to fit in a pocket but large enough to hold onto. The viewscreen is very bright and clear, but there is also a viewfinder for when the light is too bright. There is little or no shutter-lag, which is very important to me. And the built-in flash does a very nice job out to about 15 feet or so. The face-recognition feature works well, but seems to be most effective in closeups.

Broken White LCD Screen Display Less than Year Ownership
I have had this camera Canon PwerShot TX1 for less than one year and the LCD screen only displays all white now. This is very disturbing since I take such good care of the camera. [...] I would not recommend this camera since I am not the only one experiencing this problem. [...]

I bought this camera for a vacation to California and was very pleased. My friends were very impressed with the quality of the images. As the days passed, I took better and better shots. I kept it on
Auto" most of the time and found that to be satisfactory.
One minor gripe, you can turn the flash off, but not force it on, that would be handy when you are outside, but have shadow on your subjects faces. Other than that, and for the money, I am more than satisfied with this camera
Edit: Upon reading through the manual, I find that I am mistaken. You can't force the flash to fire in AUTO mode, but can in other modes.

I'm very happy with this camera. The zoom is excellent, user interface is intuitive, and the pictures I've taken with it are great. It does better than I expected on macro shots. The biggest disappointment is the long delay between shots, especially with the flash. It hasn't been a real issue for me, but this is not the camera to pick if you need to take mostly action shots (kids or sports).

I BOUGHT A CANON POWERSHOT SX100IS FOR $223.00 Dlls.THROUGH AMAZON.COM, FROM 17th.Street Photo AND IT WAS A GREEN LEMON AND A RIP=OFF BECAUSE THE ZOOM WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEVER WAS ABLE TO GET A CLEAR PICTURE......ALWAYS BLURRED!!! AND UPON TRYING TO USE THE ZOOM...THE LENS RETRACTION WOULD GET STUCK AND A MESSAGE KEPT APPEARING ON THE LCD....."lens error......restart the camera"....

I bought this Canon Powershot just before leaving on a family trip and had just a few hours to familiarize myself with it before putting it to work. Given my lack of familiarity with any digital cameras, I have little with which to make a comparison, however, I found the camera easy to use and was very satisfied with the resulting pictures.
I was warned by my sister that the capacity of the memory card supplied with the camera would be too small, so I immediately bought another card. If I hadn't been forewarned, I certainly would have been disappointed on my trip.
Finally, in the course of two weeks I took about 300 photographs and ran through three sets of batteries. The 2x batteries are inexpensive and easy to find, but I don't know if that rate of use is par for the course.
Overall, I was pleased with the ease of use and the quality of the pictures.

There are a wide range of digital cameras in this price brand, but I have to admit I am impressed with the Canon A470.
There is a large amount of easily available information on the model, so I will just list the main features I have impressed me the most.
Firstly whilst so many are getting smaller and smaller, this Canon has a nice comfortable fit in the hand, with not too many buttons and is not too fiddly to use.
The screen is of a good size which makes it much easier to frame the picture and also in bright sunlight, the image is still visible (unlike some screens).
I plugged in a 2Gb memory card (which was really cheap) so I can now take nearly 1000 pictures, in standard format, before I have to unload to my PC. Connection to the PC is very easy, just appears as an additional hard drive and you can drag/drop the files accordingly.
On the functionality side, the out of the box standard settings are more than adequate, but are easy to adjust. I managed to work most of them out without reading the manual.
As an overall package this camera is great!

Nice wide screen, very clear view and photos. Batteries lasted over 120 photos. Very good videos. Have not figured out yet how to keep the camera from reseting the flash on feature every time I turn it off and on again. Many features I have not played with yet.

Options - options - options!!! This camera gives you the options you need in a nice entry level digital camera. I have used it for portrait photography, during meteor showers (pictures just needed slightly edited in Photoshop), for paranormal investigations (yep ghost hunting is a hobby), for product shots for websites and much more. It has everything you can want in a camera. Although it might be a little old (I got mine about a year ago), but if I was going to buy somebody a camera or another one for myself I would definitely choose this camera or another Canon Powershot. In fact my mother-in-law loved the pictures so much she went out and bought herself one. And she loves it too.
The only con is a slight problem it has when taking pictures of eyes. If you use the red eye reduction mode it isn't much of a problem, but without it you may get a lot of green and red hued eyes from your subjects. If you forget to set your red eye reduction mode on you may need to touch up your pictures in a photo editor.
Other than that the camera is perfect! Batteries last long (I'd say over 300-400 pictures per set of batteries - which includes a lot of looking at the screen and reviewing the pictures), their are a ton of customizable settings, the movie mode takes gorgeous movies and the pets & kids mode sure helped me when taking pictures of my new kitten. It also has everything you need in order to plug it into your TV outs and play picture shows for family and friends. Which is great when you want to show grandma some of your pictures and she doesn't have a computer.
The first major use the camera got was at the zoo and in the hands of my wife. She didn't bother to read the manual or practice. Without really kn owing what she was doing - the pictures turned out perfectly! The zoom was amazing!!! She got pictures of the animals that showed such detail as veins on the tongues of the giraffes. Dust cracks on the backs of the elephants and much more. Best part was that she was over 20 to 30 feet away from her subjects and out of harms way. Yet the pictures were so close and detailed!
One tip - get a larger memory card - 1gb or more. As with ALL digital cameras you buy these days you will need higher storage than the card they give you. I mean at the highest quality setting on this camera (7mb) - you can only take about 15 pictures before the camera card they give you is full. Save yourself the frustration and just buy a larger memory card.
For those of you interested in ghost hunting this camera is great! I'm happy to say that after extensive testing this camera doesn't show that many orbs created from dust. Some digital cameras have a hard time with dust and this one doesn't have many false positives in dusty conditions.

My order arrived sooner than expected. The camera was brand new - in excellent condition, as promised. I am very satisfied with the Canon PowerShot A470 and would recomend it highly to anyone.

I love this camera! I didn't even know I was in the market for a camera until I used my friends Canon SX110IS. It was so easy to use and understand, and downloading the pictures onto the computer was snap. The next week I bought mine. Since getting it I have taken many pictures-the first test was my 3 year olds birthday party. Let me tell you, the kids and pets setting on the camera was up to the occassion. I got some great group shots even though they were running around the back deck with our dog. I have since brought it to a concert, a couple trips to the park, and taken Easter portraits. All of them are clear. I will never buy anything but a canon again.

This camera compromises on a lot to fit it all in. Thus it does not do any one thing super well. But it does do many things.
The image quality I would prefer to have a slightly oversaturated color. I almost always have to tweak outdoor pictures.
Does not take good indoor(low light) photo's compared to other smaller cameras, flash overfill.
Is rather fragile.
The lens distortion is huge when trying to capture vertical items.
Video is adequate.
Probably the best camera out there with all the features and still fits in your pocket. But a lot of compromises.
If you want better outdoor and event photos, and don't need to fit in your pocket, definately look else where, something with a bigger lense.
For indoor photos or basic outdoor photos, one of the smaller pockets would do.

This Canon A470 was purchased for a friend who wanted an easy to operate and inexpensive digital camera. This one fit the bill perfectly. They are very happy with it and use it a lot.

This camera fulfils all our expectations - its size fits into pockets, bags or any small space easily. Also it fits comfortably into your hand, though it is necessary to use the wrist strap as it is very smooth.
The photo quality is excellent, professional in fact even for an amateur photographer. The price you pay for this is a photo that is a bit heavy on MB. The zoom is easy to use and close at hand.
The peep sight is somewhat small but you get used to it.
Altogether I could really recommend this gem for fast picture taking and for your more serious shots as well.

Have not had this camera very long put I am very pleased with it so far. The zoom is great and pictures are good. A little heavier that I am use too but not a problem. I had a Sony cyber shot before and have always had a Sony camera but decided to try a Canon and I like this Canon better. I am not a photo expert so for my needs this camera is good.

Great camera. I have been very pleased with it. A friend dropped it while we were on a cruise and we were able to order the part to fix it. But before then the camera continued to take great pictures even after the damage. Awesome!
