Printer has a good feature set, but the implementation is fairly poor.As a printer: Good print quality. Average print speed. Multiple paper jams, especially when attempting to print double-sided documents. As a scanner: Again good quality. But VERY SLOW. Would not recommend for anyone routinely scanning documents or photos.Overall quality/cost : Poor. Bought the printer just over a year ago, now it's broken and won't scan, won't print. Bought it for $130 and spent at least that much on ink for just over a year of light use. Although I'm a Canon fan (especially their cameras), I will be looking for another brand of printer.

Bought with some trepidation. Seems like no AIO had uniformly good reviews. I almost bought the HP Premium All In One Fax machine but at the last minute decided to stick to Canon since I have had good experiences. Unlike other reviewers I found set up fairly easy. The manual is a bit confusing but I was not setting up for Wi Fi. I have Wi Fi but because I have Verizon FIOS but I am the only one who prints and I have a desk top not a lap top so it didn't seem necessary. I assume I can configure it for wi fi if I ever need to. Took about 2 hours to get out of the box and working. I made the mistake of allowing Windows to recognize new hardware and install from CD which was fine but then it didn't install all the software. So I redid it from the CD itself and all was well. Only took an additional 10m minutes or so. I have printed a document and a photo, both came out excellent. I used the copy function and I scanned. The scanning was much faster than on my former Canon flatbed scanner. Took a few minutes to figure out how to best use it with Adobe Photoshop but not too long. Photo came out great as well. Much better than the old original it came from. I haven't faxed yet because my phone cord is too short to reach the outlet but will try when I get a longer cord. I don't intend to use for incoming faxes just outgoing so won't have to deal with the issues some other reviewers had with the fax interfering with the phone. I plan to only plug it in when I want to use it. It is much bigger than my old printer but it does a lot more so it would have to me. It fits fine on the section of the desk that houses my desktop processor which is about the width of a file cabinet. If you only had a regular desk, then you would probably need a file cabinet or something elses to place it on. The paper tray opening by itself when you hit print is a nice featuer that helps with dust. i have resigned myself to high ink cost. I don't find Canon worse than any other and I have always used Canon Photopaper anyway. This printer is for home use and some minimal business use so speed it not the most important thing to me either. I rarely print a document more than 10 pages. So far I am impressed!

First the positive part of the review:I specifically picked the Pixma 860 based on other reviews. I found the installation process to be very smooth and had no problems getting the printer to work in the wireless mode. Simply follow the instructions in the "getting started" manual and you will be good to go. The printer portion works as advertised. However, the fax part of the Pixma 860 works very oddly. If you have any intention of using the fax capability - beware. You have 4 options for setting the fax up for incoming calls: one for Fax only and 3 options if using both as a fax and telephone. If set up in a telephone priority mode, you MUST be home to start the fax machine manually or it will ring no answer. If setting up in a Fax Priority Mode, the fax answers on the 2nd ring even if there is no fax and will not allow any phone in the house to pick-up EXCEPT the phone that is connected to the fax machine. I do not have Distinctive Ring Option from the phone company, so I was unable to explore that option.I spent 2 hours on the phone with two different Canon Techs and they informed me that the problem in in the machine design. I find it darn near impossible to believe that one has to either be home to press the start button to receive the fax or that no other extension in the house can pick up the phone without running down to the fax machine to disconnect the call at the fax.If you are using this in a one room office, you could make it work for you, but if you are in a home that has more than one extension, than you are out of luck. Canon ultimately offered two work arounds for me: 1) Get distinctive ring from the phone company (no thanks to that added monthly expense or 2) Buy a complete new cordless phone system for the house (7 units needed) and hook the base unit up to the fax machine. While faxes are seldom received anymore, I do need the process to be automatic without giving up the use of other extensions in the home. Neither workaround works for me.I am concerned that no one else has mentioned this issue and normally that would leave me to conclude that the problem is a user set-up error. But after spending two hours with technicians and engineers at Canon I do not believe that to be the case. 4/5/09 - Another reader has advised that if an answering machine is hooked up to the phone outlet on the fax machine, that the fax will answer after the answering machine has picked up. The key here is the answering machine HAS to be hooked up to the fax. In my case this will not work as my answering and fax are on different floors and they both need to be in different spots (fax machine is for me and the answering machine is for the family).

I love this printer. I bought one for my Dad and used it while visiting him. I loved it so much that I bought my own. What makes this printer better than the rest is the ink cartridges (generic) are very cheap online (123inkjet). Most printers I looked out was cheaper but ink cost more and I saw some more expensive and ink was even higher. This is the best multifunction printer I have ever used. I have had three in the last 12 years and they were all Canon. This is the first time I didn't have to network the printer myself....it already as the feature included. I love the auto feeder where you can copy or scan multiple documents.

Many other reviewers have discussed the features of this printer, so there's no point repeating what they've written. The feature set was the reason I bought this printer, and I'm very happy with what it does and how it does it.Its thirst for ink is an issue for some reviewers, and I'm concerned by that, too. There is good news and bad news:The good news is that it uses separate ink tanks for the various colors. That means, of course, that you won't be throwing away a color ink cartridge when only one of the colors is gone. I suspect that over time, that will cut my ink costs. Further, there are two black cartridges. One of them is used for mixing with the three colors to get various tones, and the other-- and much larger-- one is used for normal black text. That, too, is a potential money-saver. I consider these features real pluses for this printer. The bad news is that the low-ink warning for the larger black ink cartridge appears VERY quickly, after what seems like a small number of pages. Then a short while later, the warning is replaced by a more ominous notification that the black ink cartridge "appears to be empty." Both of those notifications are false alarms; however, there's no way to prevent them from appearing every time you print. The ink seems to last for many, many pages after the notifications appear. Either the sensors built into the cartridge and printer are overly conservative, or they're deliberately calibrated to encourage early replacement. You can decide...The bottom line is that the printer does seem to use black ink pretty quickly. I set the output to "draft" mode, and I find that perfectly adequate for about 90% of what I print. That saves ink, and it speeds up the printing, too.In summary, I like this printer, and I have no regrets about buying it. But you do need to think a little about the ink usage issue.

Interesting....I thought the person who warned me about "reasonably priced" printers that lure you in and then condemn you to a lifetime of outrageous toner costs was cynical. Now I know he was a friend (okay, a son). Absolutely outrageous what Canon charges you for the itty-bitty replacement cartridges which run out the moment you look at them. Even more expensive if you buy them color-by-color. Unethical is another word that comes to mind.

I've had this printer only a couple of weeks. I bought it because my old printer was not compatible with my new computer. The Canon Pixma MX860 was a breeze to set up and I have had no problems with it. There are a couple of things I have noticed, though, that I wish I had known before I bought it.First, the tray that holds the copy paper only holds about 100 pages. It slides out from under the tray that holds the freshly printed paper. This tray is a piece of flimsy plastic, and every time I try to slide it back in, I'm deathly afraid I'm going to break it. It never slides in straight, always just slightly off center, so I have to wiggle it around to fit right. While the rest of the copier seems well made and solid, this paper tray is a piece of junk.Secondly, like I said, I've had this printer only a couple of weeks, and only used it really for 2 days, and already I've gotten a warning notice that one of the black ink cartridges is almost out of ink. (There are two black ink cartridges; the other one contains less ink and is used, I think, when you print in color; I always print in b&w unless there's a special reason why it should be in color.) I've only printed maybe 100-150 pages or so; not much at all. My old printer (HP deskjet) would go through reams of paper before running out of ink, so I'm very disappointed in how fast this printer is going through the ink. I typically print my own color Christmas cards/letter, and I can only imagine how much ink this printer will go through, if it empties the biggest ink cartridge after just 150 pages. Luckily, I buy refilled ink cartridges at $6/each (as opposed to $15 for Canon brand), but still, having to replace ink cartridges every week is going to get real old and very expensive real fast.

I really like this AIO printer but the print speed is a bit low and the shipping speed was SLOW (FedEx, standard shipping). I can't blame that on Amazon or the company I bought it from but it needs to be said. The printer was extremely easy to set up and even easier to use. Great buy (if you don't mind waiting for it in the mail).

Pros: Duplex printing, multifunction, good quality printingCons: - Won't print if you are out of any color ink cartridge!! - (Other reviewers have said it doesn't do anything when out of ink) - Uses all ink colors even if on greyscale - bulky - setting up double-sided, two pages per page etc is trickyI wouldn't buy it again. Simply because of the ink issues.

I have a Canon MP830 multifunction printer connected to my Mac running OS X10.5.X. In many ways I find the Canon unit to be functional and more than satisfactory. I print the occasional photo and have been please with the results, although I have to admit that I am increasingly using photo printing services because the results are overall better and there is little wastage of ink, paper and time to get good results. The scanner works great and I love the sheet feeder on it. I use the fax for outgoing occasionally and it works well enough. Copier function is fine as well. Most of us know that printer companies really sell ink to make their money, and Canon is no exception. I have long noticed that my Canon is constantly pestering me about replacing a color ink tank when I haven't been doing color printing. These tanks ain't cheap. If you buy canon inks, a 4-tank (CMYK) pack is going to set you back about $45 discounted. After being hit up by my printer for yet another color tank, and knowing I have printed no color images lately, I investigated more carefully. Referring to the Canon support website under "greyscale printing", which is the only such option offered by the printer driver. I find the following words:"Note: Grayscale printing does not prevent the use of all inks. Shades of gray are created by using all color inks to create a composite shading."I started looking into other models of the Canon multifunction printer sets and found the same answer for this and other models.Just be aware, that with simply modest B&W printing, you are going to go through a lot of color ink. Since I can buy a B&W laser printer for less than $100 now, I am strongly considering this option, and relegating my Canon to scanner/fax service only. A rather big disappointment, because I don't like being taken advantage of. If I were shopping again, I would look carefully at the KODAK printers simply because they are making a marketing point of the abuse consumers have been suffering at the hands of the other ink vendors.

I looked and looked for a wireless all-in-one printer, with fax, and finally settled on this one. I saw the notes about the wireless setup being tricky, but being very computer savvy, I thought it would be a snap.WRONG. Wow, whoever at Canon dreamed up this printer's wireless setup should be flogged and fired. If you are trying to figure out Canon's way to do wireless, here are some tips for you potential buyers. These tips are only meant for those needing help with wireless setup - not USB setup.1. Don't even try to setup wireless using the printer itself. Unlike most products these days, there is NOT an option to scan/select/enter your network's SSID, enter a security key, and bam - you are done. No, the printer based setup is a mess.2. Turn off your printer for now, and make sure it is not connected to anything via USB.3. You need a laptop or other computer that is already connected to your network - WIRELESSLY. Don't use a PC/laptop that is connected to your network via ethernet cable. THIS IS KEY. You will connect your printer to this wireless PC/laptop via USB - LATER. Keep reading.4. Put the Software disc in, select Custom Install, Select ALL of the software options.5. When asked, choose that you want to setup a network based printer (do NOT select the USB based printer). This is the second option.6. Eventually you will be asked to connect a USB cable to your printer, then this wireless laptop/PC, and then turn on the printer. From here, I think the instructions are actually OK to follow. The key to this printer's wireless setup is using a wirelessly connected laptop/PC to set it up.Also, if you are going to setup other laptopsPC's in your house to connect with this printer, you cannot simply use the IP address that you end up getting or setting. No, you need to take the software disc to each laptop/PC, install at least the drivers (more if you want, but only the drivers are needed), and when asked, select the option stating you want to connect to a printer that is already setup on the network.Well folks, I hope this helps some of you. I do like this printer, its print speeds are fine and the print quality is good as usual, for Canon.Good luck, and enjoy!Todd

I highly recommend this printer for anyone who is looking for a AIO that really is built with quality in mind, but not so expensive that it is for the commercial user.About my setup: I have a network that uses an older wireless router by U.S. Robotics, using WPA passphrase for wireless security. My laptop connects using the wireless and it is an HP Dv6000 with Windows Visa Business. I only used the software provided on the CD that came with the printer, and I have yet to install any updates from the Canon website (I haven't cared to really look yet either.)Pros:The paper holder opens when you print! Duplex capability, fast printing, crisp text, prints photos very well, large color display, easy to use scanning utility, many, many printing options, ability to read and write to memory cards & flash drives (have not used yet), sleek ADF that hides, back paper tray for photos or whatever - folds tightly closed when not in use, wireless works very well, energy star compliant, initially responds quickly to either printing or scanning, has built-in templates such as grid paper and writing paper, works well with Vista, ink cartridges light up when inserted properly, ink seems to last a while (I have been printing photos & haven't yet seen a line drop on the ink indicator)Cons:1. Wireless was a bit more painful to setup than I imagined. Being a techie I am not used to needing to read a manual to work my way around a printer, but with this one I needed it to setup the wireless. It is somewhat time consuming to set this up, I found I needed a little over 30 minutes to complete. I didn't experience any problems with the setup, but was slightly annoyed that I couldn't set up the wireless from the printer itself. It did detect my network without any problems and once completed it works great.2. It does seem to have a larger footprint than any home office AIO than I have ever had before. It is about 19" wide and 16" deep.SummaryI highly recommend this printer to anyone with a small home office or who just wants a great well built AIO. For less than $200 this is an awesome AIO, that does better than some commercial class AIO's I have worked with. You can't beat the price for this kind of quality, with this many features.

I needed an AIO printer with networking capability. I originally purchased a HP J6480 from a local store and returned it after one day (see my review for details). I should have bought the Canon from the start since I have been very happy with my dedicated Canon photo printer (Pro9000) I feel Canon's build quality is second to none and that tradition continues with the MX860.Setup was very easy. I am using the printer connected to my router via an ethernet cable. You first connect the printer via the USB cable, run the software and when prompted, disconnect the USB cable and follow the prompts to set it up over the network. Very simple. So far I've tested all it's features except printing directly from a memory card and am satisfied. The paper feeds, whether from the front paper tray, the ADF, or the rear photo feed is top quality (unlike the HP printer which jammed repeatedly). I really appreciate the auto duplexing. Faxing is a breeze whether directly from the machine or from the computer and worked flawlessly. I put the machine in 'TEL Priority' mode which seems to work best for me. If I'm not home and a voice call comes in, my answering machine picks up and records the message. If a fax comes in when I'm not around, the answering machine picks up but then the machine recognizes it's a fax and my fax is printed. Not bad! Photo printing is adequate but not spectacular. Again I have a dedicated photo printer so no big deal. The front and rear paper trays hold about 150 sheets each and the ADF about 35 so I find that adequate.I also appreciate the five separate ink cartridges as opposed to only two on the HP, so you need change only the ink that is consumed. Finally in the past when I've needed Canon tech support (not this printer), the call was NOT routed overseas but somewhere here in the states. That may not be important to you but is something I appreciate. Overall I'm very satisfied with this printer and I highly recommend it.

The Canon MX860 is everything you need in a printer. It has a copy and scan function, a full function fax, memory card reader, automatic document feeder and of course a paper and photo printer. There are 2 paper trays so you can keep plain paper in one and photo paper in the other. It is very quiet for a printer of this size. It has a rather large footprint but it takes up much less space than the individual printer, fax machine and scanner that it replaced. This unit is very sturdy and should be good for the kids to use without fear of them breaking something. The function buttons are easy to see and easy to use.The setup manual can look rather intimidating but the actual setup was quite easy. It took less than an hour from opening the box to completion. There is a USB cable included; something you don't see much these days. The ink cartridges are full size, not starter cartridges that run out real fast. All in all, this is a great printer at a great price. I highly recommend the Canon MX860.

This printer was so great and easy to use I got one for my parents. I have a wired network so I cant comment on the wireless part of the printer but it was very easy to setup unless you run windows 7 then you have to go and find all the drivers and applications. You just put the disk in and let it run it walks you through the network setup of the printer so you dont really need to know much about it. It even lets you choose to run it by DHCP it will prompt you for the mac address. With this printer I scanned in 3 years of stuff out of my file cabinet and it all fit on one cd. Plus it scans it into a searchable pdf so I can find the bill again if I need to referance it again. I love this printer I gave ink price a three because its still about 60 bucks for the inks.

I received it before the promised delivery date and it was easy to set up and get printing in about a 1/2 hour after removing all the packing material. I would highly recommend this printer to anyone and a plus with this printer is the individual ink cartridges where you only need replace those that are empty. Canon makes a quality product and if you need a new printer try out this one I'm sure you will like it.

I got this multifunction printer from [...] because of a warranty exchange with my old one.1. It takes different, smaller (but priced the same) ink cartridges from Canon, so you can't use your old ones.2. The print quality is fine if you're only printing mapquest directions. But when I printed my resume, on the same paper as I used with my old printer, the text is all a lot fuzzier. It's not impossible to read by any means, but it's definitely not sharp either.3. The scanner seemed to do a decent job, until I looked a little closer - there's abbout 5 random white and black spot in glossy pictures I scanned in. And the damn thing keeps cutting off the sides or bottom (depends on the scan) of the picture I'm trying to scan in. It's not that hard to not cut off part of the picture (peoples feet keep getting cut off)! It's really not. But this scanner keeps doing it anyways.4. The printer seems to take a minute or two to start up before you can print anything.I'm just saying - it's a pretty mediocre printer/scanner.

Boy, what a nice upgrade! I am replacing a Canon PIXMA MX850 that was giving me great service until the larger black cartridge died, or should I say the Print Head. No amount of cleaning, aligning, deep cleaning, etc would make it work. The replacement head was going to be about $60, so I got the PIXMA MX-860 here at Amazon for only $130. What a nice upgrade! MUCH easier setup than the 850, especially the wireless network. It was a quick, easy setup. Print quality is excellent, duplex, fax, scan, all are as good if not better than the 850. I'm a happy camper! For the money, and with the list of features, this printer is a steal. Get one!

I had some problems connecting my MX860 to my wireless network. It is up and running now so I thought I would pass on some insights. Bottom line; use the manual setup through the USB connection if you have any security on your wireless network.I have a home network consisting of a new Linksys WRT160N wireless router, a 24-inch iMac with OSX 10.5.6 and an old Windows XP Pro SP3. My wireless network has the network name (SSID) turned off and uses WEP hex encryption.I assumed that I would be able to go to a MX 860 menu screen and manually enter in the IP address, gateway, SSID and encryption. I looked through the Getting Stated Manual and the onscreen manual but I could not find anyway to connect the wireless network through the menu LCD. Too bad, that would have been great!Next, I tried to connect using Wi-Fi Protected Set-up (WPS) to no avail. I made sure the wireless connection was selected then installed the software on my iMac but I could never get a connection. My guess is that the network security was the problem.Next, I connected my iMac to the MX 860 via USB cable and used the manual wireless network connection configuration procedure. I was finally able to put in the network security information. When I disconnected the USB, the MX 860 was connected wirelessly. The MX860 showed up but interestingly was connected via its Mac network card address instead of its IP address. Everything worked fine though. Finally I connected my Windows XP to the MX860 by installing the software and connecting to the MX 860 via the USB cable. I used the manual wireless connection and this time it connected via IP address and allowed me to enter a static address.BTW - all the materials and packing are first rate. The printing, scanning and copying look good too. The Windows applications that come with the CD are more complete than the Mac ones.

I bought this printer based on the great reviews that I found here. It is the fourth all-in-one that I have owned and it will definitely be the last canon I ever get. I had a Dell before this, but it would not work with my new mac, so I had to get a new machine. I so wish I could still use my old Dell, or that I had the sense to go with an HP. This machine is so impossible to work. It is a production to scan something into the computer without using the document feeder. Changing ink cartridges is a pain in the neck, and the whole issue with 2 back cartridges just is a waste, but it is consistent with the canon's way of working. I use color with my work, so I have always had a color printer. Since I do not print photos, I can't say how it works with those, but the quality when I print is definitely lower than I have been accustomed to.I should have know this was going to be a problem machine when it took me a couple of hours to set it up. My other printers were much, much easier, just plug in all the cords, pop in the disk and presto, you are done. None of this fax notification business, I could fax immediately. All in all, canon should stick to cameras and forget the printer business.Canon PIXMA MX860 Wireless All-In-One Photo Printer

This is the 3rd Pixma printer we've purchased for our business. They are rugged, dependable printers with a lot of good features. For someone who has average or above average computer experience they are pretty easy to use, however the MX860 was purchased for someone who isn't that comfortable with computers and doesn't have much patience. The steps you have to take to scan, then email or print a document or picture are overwhelming for him and as a result he won't use that feature. Also, as with all inkjet printers, the replacement ink can be a bit costly. Overall I do like this printer, though, and would buy one again.

I bought this wireless network printer becaused it advertise support for Mac. Just because they created software for it didn't mean that it would actually function. I called into cannon tech support and was turned off by the entire experience. The support guy was useless and condescending. At the end of the call he pointed the blame on Apple and told me to call them since he said it was an Apple problem. I called Apple and they pointed me back to Cannon. Waste of time and money. One note, I did try it on a pure windows machine, which worked fine, but still a bit slow from commanding the printer to print to it actually printing. It doesn't work in VMFusion. Anyway, I bought it for an Apple Macbook and it didn't work so it was greatly dissatisfied.
