Those boxes of documents, love letters, photographs from both my wife's family and mine have weighed on my mind for almost 20 years. In fact, 15 years ago I ordered a Visioneer portable scanner with the intention of getting a load off my mind (and out of the attic). The device proved buggy, partially effective and extremely time-consuming, leading to my aborting the project and selling the scanner. But in the past several months, the regular television commercials for Neato portable scanners renewed my interest. After reading some of the reviews for Neato portables, I questioned whether the technology had advanced far since my first Visioneer. But before abandoning the project a second time I investigated other possibilities, with the following findings: You can spend several dollars on one of many scan "apps," designed to work with the camera of an iPhone or iPod (good for a couple of documents, maybe). In the 50-100 dollar price range you might pick up a Magic Wand (make sure your hands are steady and your patience long) VuPoint Solutions Magic Wand Portable Scanner (PDS-ST410-VP). In the 150 dollar price range there's a decent Brother personal scanner (looks good for occasional use and when on the go) Brother DSMobile Scanner (DS-600) and a wireless device called the Doxie (be sure to read consumer reviews as well as the maker's claims) Doxie, the amazing scanner for documents.Getting to devices for the more "serious" user, there are several reputable scanners in the two hundred dollar range, above all the Fujitsu Scansnap S1100 Fujitsu SCANSNAP S1100 CLR 600DPI USB Mobile Scanner (PA03610-B005) and the HP Scanjet 1000 HP Scanjet Professional 1000 Mobile Scanner (L2722A#BGJ). These deserve consideration from users who plan to move about and travel, taking the scanner with them on business trips, etc. But besides size and weight, be sure to to note the presence or absence of features like duplex printing, drivers, automatic feed.Once you're at the $200 mark, it's difficult not to notice what's available for an extra fifty to eighty dollars. The two scanners in this range that stand out--combining the convenience of a portable, USB-powered scanner with the features of a professional office machine--are the Fujitsu S1300 (Fujitsu is clearly the champ with Amazon purchasers) Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300 Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Mobile Scanner (PA03603-B005) and the Canon P150 Canon imageFORMULA P-150 Portable Document Scanner(Scan-tini).But wait! There's also the pictured machine, the Canon P215, the newest offering and one which, though slow to be discovered by consumers, is gradually rising in Amazon's sales rankings (it's moved ahead of the Canon P150 in just the past week). Admittedly, the feature differences between the two Canons are almost as small as the price difference. Size and performance of the two machines are practically identical. The P215 is .2" wider and 2 oz. heavier. The P215 comes with "Advanced Text Enhancement," "Character Emphasis," and several user-adjustable color settings not advertised with the P150; it has a "dedicated" card reader (which accepts thick, laminated cards as well as paper biz cards); its high-speed interface includes USB 3.0 along with USB 2.0; finally, Mac users can be assured that it's "Lion-ready." In short, the P215 seems slightly more "future-proofed" than the P150.On to the showdown: Canon or Fujitsu? The Fujitsu S1300 accepts 10 sheets in auto-feed mode; the Canon P150 and P215 both accept up to 20 sheets ; the Canons have built-in Twain drivers for guaranteed out-of-the box plug-and-scan convenience; the Fujitsu does not. The Fujitsu includes an AC adapter; the Canons list it as an option. In sum, if I had any hesitation between the two brands, it was because of the Fujitsu's bundled OCR software program: the well-regarded ABBYY FineReader. But once I considered the two brands from a broader perspective, noting my satisfaction with my printer (Canon MP640) and camera (Canon SD780), the final decision became inevitable. ("PC Magazine," for one, seems to agree, rating it "best of breed.")

From the moment I opened up my Canon image FORMULA P-215 I was in absolute awe. Before going on, let me just state for the record that I am a "gadget guy" all the way and have an entire office full of sweet equipment, but as far as scanners go, this one really takes the cake. Here's my breakdown:Size:This thing is tiny! It sits about a little over an inch tall, three inches deep, and 11 inches wide. This can easily be plopped right into an attach? without adding any more bulk than a 300 page book. Miraculously, even though it is so small, it feels really well built and sturdy. And while we're talking about looks, even though I am a function over form guy, this think is darn right sexy. Can a scanner be sexy? If you see this thing in person, you'll see what I mean.Installation:This scanner does not even need to have any software installed to run on PC or Mac. I don't own a Mac, but on the PC I just plugged it in to my USB 3.0 port and a pop-up came, I clicked the scanner file (which is located WITHIN the scanner), and the software was up on my screen in less than half a minute. Next, I walked over to my wife's computer and plugged it in there with the dual USB 2.0 connection and it was up and running in the same amount of time. Although not necessary, this dual connection will allow you to scan at high-speed (like USB 3.0) on a USB 2.0 computer. In either configuration, there are NO POWER CORDS! This means that when you want to use it at work or at a client's location, you don't have to get on your knees to plug it in. Also note: this thing doesn't even have a power button! It just turns on when you open it up to scan! Brilliant!Software:When running the software built into the scanner, you can have it run in full-auto mode, or change all the settings to your liking. Settings include color mode, page size, DPI, skip blank pages, straighten skewed images, rotate to match text orientation, and even more if you want to use the advanced settings. You can also save the file in the following types: PDF, TIFF, JPG, PPTX (Powerpoint), or BMP. Also note that this scanner automatically uses OCR (optical character recognition) so that your PDFs are immediately searchable from within. ( In fact, in Windows you can download a small patch from Microsoft and make all your PDFs content searchable right from Windows Expolorer.)Performance:I scanned things like crazy to put this thing through the paces. The claim that it can scan a 20-page stack is indeed accurate. The scans look fantastic and the OCR was accurate as well.Comparison to my Fujitsu ScanSnap s1500This unit, which is approximately half the price of my Fujitsu, compares favorably to it in terms of ease of use and output. The only differences (for me) are that the Canon scanner is a tad slower and doesn't hold enough sheets. If I wasn't such a heavy scanner-user then I would definitely switch over to the Canon because of its small footprint, but as it stands, I will definitely be using this as my go-to travel scanner.Additional Software:This scanner also comes with CaptureOnTouch software, which is a more permanent solution for using this scanner as a desk scanner (as opposed to a portable on-location scanner). Also note that you can download the latest software/drivers from the Canon website including: ScanToEvernote, ScanToGoogle, and ScanToSharePoint.Final thought:All in all, this scanner gets my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION. It is a 5-star product in every way.

Great product, I love its small size and considerable speed. Everything is better than expected really, but I'll concentrate here on these tiny annoyances that surfaced on my watch. The first problem concerns the scanning software. What's annoying about it is that, though it will let you save in several file formats including PDF and JPG, you can't save a single scanning session more than once.Say you want to scan 100 pages out of a document, like an agenda. You'd like to have these pages in different date folders. So you save the document as 100 separate PDFs. However, for the sake of convenience and fast reference, you'd also like to have a single PDF containing all of your scanned documents.Well you can't do that. Once you have selected a file format, the software wipes the scans out of its working memory. If you want the same images in a second format as well, you'll need a special program to do the conversion and merging for you.Frankly, its just easier to do the scanning again and choose the second file layout on this second go.Secondly, the cancel button never works. If you're half way through a scan and press cancel, the software will stop saying that it is scanning and rather will declare it is canceling. But otherwise your plea is ignored and the document will continue its voyage through the scanner - even if a half-jam is haphazardly tearing it apart, which is common when you feed your machine something bizarre like a big sheet folded in half (for which the machine is not designed). Once the scan is completed, even after you've canceled it, you'll have the option to save the image, exactly as if you had never canceled. This renders the cancel button completely useless.Besides these two remarks, I repeat, I am very satisfied with this product and would buy again.

without installation i scanned using the built-in "capture on touch lite." i also installed the full blown "capture on touch" and scanned with it. they both work perfectly.however feeding in single sheets of paper one sheet at a time is a slight problem. often it does not "catch" and you have to give it a little tap to get it started. similarly, stuffing in multiple sheets of paper sometimes double-feeds two or more sheets at a time, especially if the sheets have been folded (to fit in an envelope.)i tried to scan a very long grocery bill and then i found a problem. you must put the scanner into "long document" mode. this cannot be done with the above-mentioned two programs (why not, i wonder?) but must be done with the "canon image formula utility".well when i loaded that program the P-215 scanner did NOT show up in the list of available scanners; in fact the list was blank. i removed & re-installed the drivers - no joy. i called canon support and after several simple shifts and changes with no success, they asked me to try installing the same drivers on a different computer since i happen to have 2 laptops running windows 7. but it did not work on the other laptop either.finally, at the end of that call, the canon support tech offered to mail me a replacement scanner -- which i received the next day, along with free return-postage for the original scanner. wow what great service! the new scanner had updated firmware and worked perfectly upon being plugged into the original computer with no other changes. the p-215 scanner showed up in the utility program and i selected it, and selected long document mode, and bob's your uncle. so be aware of this if you need to scan long docs.

I have used the P-215 for most of a day and I have to echo what many of the other reviewers are saying: Speed is very very impressive, especially for the small footprint. It does tend to pull a bit more from one side, causing the page images to be slightly tilted in many cases. This is not a huge deal for me, because during the OCR process in Acrobat, the page is automatically rotated anyway, alleviating much of that problem. Scan quality is excellent. It does miss grabbing onto the occasional next page, but this also isn't a showstopper, as again Acrobat can be configured to prompt for more pages, at which time I just reseat the current stock left in the feeder and continue. I won't spend a great deal of time on the features, as the other reviewers have done an excellent job covering them. I opted to use the software-installed Twain driver, so I can't comment on the built-in driverless option. In summary: for the money and portability, this is a very impressive product. Minor quibbles aside, I can't imagine anyone being disappointed.I also bought the power adapter which I think deserves a bit of clarification - it is the one for the P-150, and works just fine. Nowhere on that adapter page on Amazon could I find a reference to the fact that it works with the P-215, I just had to assume, since it was the only one listed, and was fortunately correct. The adapter product page should be updated to reflect this.EDIT: The soft case is not included in the package by default. You have to add it as part of your order at checkout per the instructions near the top of the page. I did not see this when I ordered mine - it may not have been "live" yet or I may simply have missed it. Thank you Northern European for pointing this out!!I've used the scanner quite a bit more since my original posting and am amazed by the power and quality you get in such a small package. I keep thinking that something this small shouldn't be handling page feeding as effortlessly as it does, but it keeps on impressing. I have a few older books that I've been wanting to convert to electronic documents, and I do notice that it has a bit of difficulty with the thicker covers. Since I also have a regular flatbed scanner, this isn't an issue for me either, as the page feeder and duplex scanning more than make up for having to scan 2 pages manually! Very happy.

I wanted to have a scanner to archive documents, reports, bills, etc. and eliminate paper storage for my home. I didn't need a super fancy business scanner, but I did want an ADF and duplex scanning. The obvious choices are the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300 Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Mobile Scanner (PA03603-B005) and these new Canon Scan-tini products (Canon imageFORMULA P-150 Portable Document Scanner(Scan-tini) and Canon imageFORMULA P-215 Portable Document Scanner (Scan-tini)). I read a lot of reviews for the various scanners from these two companies. The Fujitsu scanners are very well regarded in terms of hardware but their software is a little antiquated. The Canon software is supposedly a little better. I don't have the Fujitsu and only played with my new Canon P-215 briefly, so I don't know this for sure.I decided to go with the Canon P-215 instead of the Fujitsu S1300 because:* USB 3.0 (only P-215, not P-150), so can work optimally with just one cable connection* Comes with software for both Windows and Mac (again, only P-215 apparently)* Supports TWAIN driver compatibility* Better default app software (Windows)* Slightly larger ADF capacity (but quality is unclear based on reviews, thought it worked fine for my 2 tests so far)* Scan-tini products minic a flash drive when connected via USB, containing a mini version of their default app software, so you don't need to install any software at all -- Nice if you're using it on other computers while traveling* P-215 also has a cute card-size scanning slot, nice touchThe USB 3.0 feature implies to me newer (better?) hardware design. The TWAIN driver compatibility allows other programs to scan directly into them. And I like the option of using it with both Windows and Macs (we use both at home). Those are the biggest advantages for me.But the Canon scanners have these disadvantages:* They don't include other third-party software, i.e. ABBYY FineReader for ScanSnap 4.1 which sounds like it does some OCR of the scanned images. I found that the PDFs generated from Canon's default CaptureOnTouch app could search for some words but cut-and-paste of the text from a financial report was very garbled. I found the ABBYY FineReader 11 Professional Edition from a different retailer for a bit less and with a rebate, so I ordered it to perform proper OCR. I don't have it yet but tried the free trial, and its PDF was much smaller and had all the proper OCR recognition performed so cut-and-paste worked very well.* Fujitsu scanning hardware sounds like it may be the best* Scan-tini scanners don't come with the AC adapter (optional accessory)

Like many others I was in between purchasing the Fujistu s1300i and this Canon P-215. I was able to score a good deal with the Canon and I liked the idea of having the card scanner built-in so decided to give it a try. VERY GLAD I did! This thing handles anything you throw at it and the scans are quick and look great. The software works flawlessly with my Mac. I'm actually using Eaglefiler to scan into and it works like a champ (No need to pay the high prices for Neat Re__ipts). I like how portable this unit is although I didn't purchase it for that reason it is nice to save some desk space. When you open the lid it instantly connects and lights up and is ready for action. I would not hesitate to recommend this to a friend. My only one issue was the first unit I had seemed to have some issues with the roller feeding the paper on single sheets. I kept having a few misfeeds so since I was within my return window I requested a replacement and the new unit works great with no feed issues. I'm sure like most electronics you can receive one that doesn't quite work right.Pros: Quick scanning speeds, can handle lots of documents, card reader and small compact size. I forgot to mention I currently have it plugged into both USB ports but have not tested the speed with only using one. I have read from others that the difference cannot be noticed in speed (due to the fact that it does not come with a power supply). Don't hesitate on this fantastic scanner.

I got this scanner to scan paper logs that take a lot of abuse (handled by many people over the course of a month, contain stickers, 3 hole punched). Previously I'd lugged around an Epson GT-S50 once a month, but it wasn't really portable and had trouble with the document feed. I ended up hand feeding each page to the Epson (typically it worked well with cleaner documents). My expectations were low for this scanner since it is so small, but I used it today for the first time and it readily scanner around 20 pages at a time. The document supports are pretty clever with the way they slide out. Even the software provided by Canon was easy to use. I hit the scan now button thinking it was the power button, and was pleasantly surprised by how functional and easy to use the software was (I had planned to scan using Adobe Acrobat Pro since manufacturer provided scanning software is often not well designed). With the Canon software it was easy to keep adding another batch of documents to the same scanning job. If you need a fast, good quality, portable scanner this should do the job. This order came with the free case, which has room for the cords and also a power plug so you can plug the 2nd USB cord into the wall if you want wall power (I've only scanned running from USB power, which has not been a problem).

Excepting 2 quirks.... I think this is a great scanner. Scanning to PDF's is awesome. There are 6V 1000ma AC/DC adapters that can be purchased for about $15 if you look around. Included software aps seems to work as they should. It is a ***** product package of hardware and integrated software.Quirk 1: I had a problem installing the software/driver etc. I disabled UAC and tried again. The install went smoothly. Suggest you do same.Quirk 2: The scanner scans both sides simultaneously. That's great for performance. You can tweak settings in attempt to eliminate blank pages, and it does a pretty good job. However, it's not perfect and occasionally bleed thru will include an unwanted page. This would be OK if you when looking at the image snippits at the top of the 'on touch' screen it would allow you to choose and delete an unwanted page. This one shortcomming is (I think) serious that I hope gets fixed in a revision and free upgrade. Hard to believe that feature is missing when Canon knows you cannot eliminate unwanted pages 100% of the time.Otherwise.... I'm very happy!

I have owned scanners since the days of $800 300dpi SCSI scanners that were the size of a stack of pizza boxes. The P-215 is a small, compact gadget that scans color duplex at high quality. The scanner is amazingly small for what it does.It sort of resembles a hardcover book - though not as wide. It is transformer like, the way it unfolds and opens up into a paper feeding machine. Amazingly, for a scanner so small, it scans duplex. To make the total package size even more compact and convenient, it does not come with a power adapter, but rather two USB cords to plug into a computer. It draws all of its power from USB.While the hardware is top notch, the software is very good, but has a few rough edges. There are two main scanning modes, that corresponds to a switch in the back confusingly named AutoStart On/Off. Canon must have received lots of feedback on this issue, as they now include a note taped to the scanner altering the user to this issue.Getting started is easy - In AutoStart mode, no software is installed on the computer. This allows the scanner to be used with virtually any machine, Mac or PC. AutoStart mode "off" requires to the use to install software from a disk. The Mac version installed without a hitch on my computer. The software provides a wider number of scanning and saving formats. In the fully automatic mode, the scanner is one touch and creates a black and white or color scanner depending on the image being scanned. It can straighten crooked scans and even skip blank pages. When you perform a scan it even automatically OCRs the document - which means you can search by text.Overall it is an excellent little scanner.Another small issue is the requirement that the scanner be plugged directly into the computer, and not through a hub. If you are like me, you'll have to unplug something else to make room for the scanner. Only the data USB needs to be plugged into the computer, and the 2nd power cable can be plugged into a powered USB hub.If you're looking to do some document scanning, I can highly recommend this versatile little scanner.

Coming from an all-in-one (AIO) printer/scanner, this sheet scanner is fast, efficient, and convenient. I scans both sides at once and will automatically detect if it's single sided so it doesn't give you a bunch of blank pages. It's much quicker with the 20-sheet feeder when compared to me flipping/changing pages on my AIO. It's weight feels dense, yet this typically is what a solid product feels like. Doesn't feel plasticky and flimsy. The setup is really quick and has it's own image application or TWAIN driver straight to applications like Acrobat. There is an optional second cord to plug in for power allegedly to add speed to the scans. I have not tested this as the single cord to the USB was pretty quick for my uses. There is also a card scanner where you can pop it in. It will suck it and spit it back out while scanning it.I've seen hospitals and other places use a Fujitsu scanner (size of a standard toaster). And it seems to work quickly in capturing an image. But the Scan-tini has the added benefit of portability and size. What I don't like about it...nothing really from my personal use. This doesn't scan books. That's what the flatbed AIO is for. But for sheets, I highly recommend this.

I bought this to replace my Scansnap 1300. THe Scansnap is good, but has no TWAIN drivers to work with common software like Quicken, Paperport, etc.- which means you have to use their software that's bundled with Scansnap. I found this to be very inconvenient. This one is also built for using USB 3.0 and comes with 2 USB cables. Have it installed in my USB 3.0 port and I can honestly say it sans almost 3 times faster. TWAIN drivers make it accessable to common scanning software and graphics software that has the TWAIN interface to accept scanned images directly. The only caveat is it doesn't come with a power adapter (need to purchase separately), but if you have a second USB available for power, you won't need it. The quality of the scans is great and it scans in duplex mode so you don't have to flip pages over to continue scanning. I bought this to clear out my files of excess paper and this scanner will fit that need nicely.

For 2 years I have used Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300 Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Mobile Scanner (PA03603-B005) which has worked really well - is speedy, rarely jams and software works smoothly. The only downside: software is not TWAIN compliant, so you cannot scan from inside other Windows programs. This Canon P-215 works well. On Mac the software started automatically but on Windows I had to click on USB drive image capture application icon to get it started. You can name the files yourself or have it automatically name them based on date; and you can choose the location where it saves. Scanned files can be in a variety of formats - PDF, JPEG, TIFF. And so far there has been no document jam, although cards do jam unless carefully inserted straight in.Compared to Fujitsu S1300, the strongest plus is the ability to scan plastic cards - like credit, insurance, driver's license etc. Dedicated card scan slot in front is very nice. I have been using WorldoScan 600 from PenPower for card scanning but their software is very glitchy compared to Canon. TWAIN compliance and USB 3.0 compatibility are other benefits of this Canon scanner. The three big disadvantages of Canon P-215: cost, lack of AC adapter and software that does not work not as smoothly with Paperport. Although it comes with Paperport 11, I could not get Canon to scan from inside the Paperport. Auto ON/OFF switch is very confusing and introduces unnecessary complexity. I cannot believe that Canon is asking for three hundred bucks for this scanner and they cannot give you a ten buck AC adapter!Bottom line: If you need the ability to scan plastic cards or TWAIN compliance and have two USB ports, go for Canon P-215. Otherwise Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300 Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Mobile Scanner (PA03603-B005) is less expensive and comes with an AC adapter and needs only one USB port.

I've had this Canon P-215 for half a year, ever since its predecessor P-150 broke down after very light use. I use the scanner maybe once a week or less, and usually just a couple of pages at a time. This has probably less than 100 pages scanned, and it is already breaking down; most of the scans end up in some sort of error: what prompted me to write this is I just spent 30 minutes trying to scan a four page contract, and it keeps telling me about a paper jam (the papers don't jam, it just quits scanning after second or third page). Neither of the scanners had no external reason to break down, the office is very clean and there is no dust or anything. When the first one broke down, I put it down to bad luck. Now I call it bad quality.

The little fellow for the money can't be beat. It was a easy setup on the fly which means you can plug the USB-2 or higher in any computer/laptop and it's ready to go. The included software is a plus for your main computer but not a must on other devices. The scanning quality is good and the multi scan feature is a plus for a portable scanner. Some ppl complain about a cord not included but if you have USB-3, you don't need it because it provides the same power as an AC outlet to the unit. I had consider one by Brother whom I have had great experiences with their printers but I am glad I settle with the Canon.

Sometimes I have a little trouble scanning very small thin receipts but them almost always slide on through and the software corrects the image it is not completely straight. The really nice thing is you can pack it up and take it with you in the carry case I got in the deal when I purchased this wonderful scanner. It will not work with VueScan but does really need it as the interface is imbedded in the scanner and shows up as soon as you plug it into the USB port.I have not had to use the extra power cable and has worked fine from the power supplied by the USB cable.

Remember the old office furniture back in the 20th century?Every office had rows of filing cabinets packed with file folders, each filled with dozens of documents. Businesses had to operate that way to keep track of their accounts. In the late 20th century, computer automation made it possible to store document images electronically, but the scanning equipment was costly and bulky.Welcome to the 21st century. Now everyone with a PC can buy one of these small, inexpensive scanners thst allow them to quickly scan a document and then discard the original paper. This Canon imageFormula P-215 is compact and easy to use. It will easily scan a business card or a legal size page of paper and store it on your PC's hard drive. My PC recognized the scanner as soon as I plugged it into the USB port. I then loaded a stack of 18 pages, pressed the scan button on the scanner, , and let it auto feed each page and store all the pages into a pdf file. The device stacker may handle up to 20 pages, but it depends on the weight of the paper and the condition of each page. Those pages with ragged edges may require some extra attention. But with minimal effort, you will be able to recover alot of desk or cabinet space in no time. This scanner is a great investment.

Compact, light weight and works seamlessly with at least 3 different operating systems (Win7, OS X 10.8.3 and Fedora 17) can operate with either USB2 or USB3, but works better and more conveniently with USB3. A major advantage is that you can use the SW in the scanner's firmware without having to install drivers or control SW on the selected platform. Somewhat expensive, but definitely money well spent.

I love Canon products -- they work flawlessly with my Mac, and they last a long time. I have an all-in-one, but I wanted something more portable. This fit the bill perfectly! The Neat scanners are nice, but I don't like relying on their software and database. In addition, I keep my scans organized well already, so didn't see a lot of benefit in maintaining such a database. With the portable scanner, and Canon's portable printer (I'm still using the one I bought 10 years ago, the Canon i70), I have a "virtual" copy machine. It suits my needs perfectly!

When I bought this scanner was because mine did not work with Win7, and I was looking for one that I could store away easily. Definitely It was the perfect choice. It works effortless, brings great results without any controls to worry about, and you can either carry it on with you, or simply store away occupying a minimum space. Don't forget to check its carrying case. It's very valuable to take care of your scanner.

I'm experiencing feed errors. Specifically, when there is only one page left in the feed hopper, it won't feed without a bit of a nudge on the paper. This occurs when trying to scan a single page or on the last page of a multi page scan job. This problem occurs regardless of paper weight. I chose this over the Fujitsu in order to have the option of TWAIN or ISIS compatibility, but this scanner is unusable due to the continual feed errors. I'll be returning this for the Fujitsu.Update 11/19/12: Returned this and replaced it with the Fujitsu S1300i ScanSnap Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Mobile Document Scanner. Although I prefer the Canon software slightly, the Fujitsu has not misfed or missed a page in a few hundred pages of scanning. Far superior paper handling than had been my experience with the Canon.

This scanner is very fast and scans on both sides at the same time with great quality. My only concern which has been commented on by other users is that papers feed in slanted sometimes as if one roller grabs it earlier than the other. I took one star off the rating for this, but overall I'd say it is a great product.

This scanner is much faster than the one built into my HP printer. My only problem was when trying to scan several pages at once. It often took more than 1 sheet at a time. But, apart from that, it's a handy machine that has cleared my office of scraps of paper, cards, receipts.

This scanner will scan documents/receipts up to 39.4 inches in length in long document mode. (See Page 32 of the manual on how to set this up.) This is the longest out of any scanner I researched. When scanning register receipts of a long length one does have to guide it by hand. Since I have not tried any other non-flatbed scanners, I cannot give a comparison to the Neat Receipts, Visoneer Road Warrior, etc. The duplex feature is great for documents and when scanning checks for e-deposit. The built in utility on the scanner is great for when scanning checks. My wife had no problem using this to scan checks on her laptop and deposit. I use PaperPort 14 for scanning and filling my other documents with the built in utility turned off. Note: The scanner comes with PaperPort 11. I went ahead and purchased PaperPort 14 due to the great deal that Nuance was offering for it. The size is great as it does not take up much space and when not in use I can close it up and place on a shelf.By the way you do not need an AC Adapter to utilize the high speed scan feature if your computer has a USB 3.0 port that is marked SS for SuperSpeed and you plug it directly into the computers USB 3.0 port. This will provide sufficient power for the high speed scan. Note: This is explained in the manual. If you only have USB 2.0 ports on your computer in order to utilize high speed scan you will need to do one of two things: Utilize the included USB to power adapter cable thus using two of your computers USB 2.0 ports or purchase the AC Adapter if you only want to use one of your USB 2.0 ports.

I purchased this scanner to be better prepared during my international move, which would leave me without an office for a good 2 months, but would require me to sign and send all sorts of papers. The P-215 fit the bill perfectly. It is small and works flawlessly. Speed is sufficient and the duplex scan feature is great. It is a little heavy, but I attribute that to good build quality. The only time it struggled was when I fed it a heavy card stock Christmas card. Highly recommended.

I have had my Canon P215 scanner for about 6 months now. It hasn't missed a beat. The PaperPort software included is easy to use and plenty robust for our needs. We scan bills, bank statements, and business cards. It really helps reduce the paper storage in the home desk. This little gem is so much quicker and easier to use than a flatbed. This is a very nice document scanner, compact or not. I've owned a Fujitsu Scansnap S1300 for several years now and was very happy with it, but I like the Canon even better. It's very compact and light. You can use it with either the full-featured software on the included CD or with the software it has built-in to itself like a small thumb drive that shows up on your desktop when you connect it. I kind of wish it came with an included AC adapter, but you can use with either one USB cable or two. If you use it with two, the extra power lets you scan faster. If you buy the additional AC adapter, you get the faster speed without losing a USB port. The software itself is very good. You can scan right into an application, like Acrobat or Evernote, but it includes an intermediary step where you can check the multi-page scans and even rescan or add more pages to the document before sending it off.It scans at a very high quality, which helps a lot when I'm converting the PDFs for optical character recognition later. As I said this is an excellent product at a competitive price and it's now displaced my Scansnap from my desk for all my paperless office needs.

Purcase this little scanner and boy does it deliver. If you are considering the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500, it's a great scanner but a little overpriced since it is a proprietary scanner, No Twain Drivers so your stuck using only the software that ships with it. The Canon imageFormula P-215 is a versatile scanner that can be used at home, office, or on the go. Since it uses twain drivers you can use any scanning software and it costs about 130.00 less than the ScanSnap. Also this scanner works with both MAC and PC while the ScanSnap is specific for the PC or the MAC but not both. The ScanSnap is a little faster but for the extra cost and the limited functionality with other software, just not worth it. Wish I had run across the Canon prior to dropping a boat load of money in the ScanSnap. I also purchased the BulletScan S300 and it is not even in the same league with these two scanners except for the cost. The BulletScan is slower and the scans are horrible, always leave a heavy black line down the left side of the page no matter how clean the original is. As a matter of fact I don't even use it anymore except to hold down paper on a windy day.

This scanner works well with pages of text. It's fast. As far as I can tell (I haven't looked at them too much) the text-recognition is good. It doesn't do as good of a job with photos, but not too many scanners do. I'm fine with the photo scanning quality. The software can be a little frustrating at times, trying to find how to do certain things. I'm glad I bought this though. I've been scanning all my paperwork I have filed and old family photos, tagging them all with relevant information so I can have a backup in case something horrible happens to my house.

As a first time owner of a dedicated document scanner I have to say that I am impressed with this product. I received the Formula P-215 a week ago and have already scanned hundreds of documents in no time at all. It has performed flawlessly rendering excellent scans. It is fast in the default factory settings and it has a tiny footprint even after opening and fully extending the document tray. I cannot attest to it's durability... that remains to be seen but the appearance and feel of the scanner leaves one with the impression that it is a quality product and will go the distance. If I have a complaint it would have to be that the setup process is a bit confusing and disconnected from the software package. The included Paperport software is not as intuitive as one would expect especially for those of us who tend to jump right in without reading the instructions first. All in all though, the complaints are minor in view of the total package.
