The S200 is a REALLY good camcorder. Like the previous reviewer, I'm a still photog. This is my very first digital camcorder. I have been waiting for the right feature set at the right price, and this has it for me, although it will be cheaper in the future.Essential features:* Standard SDHC memory that every laptop can read.* Standard video file format that basically every video processing software can work with* Very good glass for a camcorder--this is what will get you the videos your Flip will miss. The glass and sensor on this thing are a major step up from the popular YouTube camcorders out there.* Viewfinder eyepiece that works in bright sunlight.* A swivel screen that lets you compose your video even when holding the camera high above your head to see past the crowd.* A retail price of under a thousand bucks. You can 'street' this camcorder at around $800 or even less.* Excellent battery life with aftermarket choices for spare battery.If you're looking for a camcorder that won't let you down indoors like a Flip or zi8 when the light gets poor, this can help you. I still recommend a zi8 or whatever the best pocket camcorder is now. You simply can't carry this Canon everywhere video opportunities present themselves, so a pocket camcorder is a great thing to carry with you.But for events you know you will want to record, it's good to have a cam that will not let you down. You can buy a lot more camera, but you have to spend a lot more.

This is my first video camera. I was looking for video camera whose auto mode should give me great performance and this camera really gives great results. HD 1080p (MXP) with native 24 frames per second Video quality is excellent. It captures all colors in great detail.The touch screen is pressure sensitive which I didn't like at all.In summary, if you are looking for HD video quality without worrying about manual features, this may be the best choice.

Excellent video and still camera. As an former owner of both a VHS and a VHS-C camcorder, I was hesitant to move to the mini-dvd or other rotating memory format. I purchased 2 each 32GB SDHD memory cards and the longest life battery based on reviews read from many sources. I am thrilled with this camera. The images and video are excellent and the extended life battery lasts longer than I do. Highly recommend the enhanced battery/SDHC combo. The standard battey is rated for less than 2 hours, so probably needs an upgrade. The standard package had only internal memory, so go for Class 4 or higher SDHC cards. The auto crossover between memory cards is awesome!

I also have the previous year's version of this camera, the Canon HF S100. If I could combine the older "manual" menu system of the S100 with the rest of the S200 I would rate it five stars. Just because something like the touch screen menu system can be done, does not mean it should be done. I use the menu a lot. Controlling exposure and audio settings especially. It takes twice as long to get the job done on the S200. A good hard press is needed and sometimes I end up pressing the wrong item with my thick fingers. The brilliant looking LCD also gets smudged with fingerprints.Otherwise, the camera takes great video. I like the addition of a LANC port. I'll be working on my finger presses and am sure I'll get better at it with practice.

Really love it. Picture quality can't be beat for the price. Battery life says about 80 minutes when fully charged. Video is grainy in low light, but is amazing for fast moving, or average lighting conditions. The IS is great, zoom feature is great, and it's smaller than you think. Could not be happier with this setup. Took amazing videos that looked professional for our wedding.

It's a relativelty expensive camcorder but we love this product. The image quality is superb and it's very easy to operate. It's compact size and light weight is a real plus when shooting scenes over several minutes. It does a great job compensating for shakiness, and the low light shooting is good, but not phenomenal. It's also a great camera for still shots. We highly recommend it.

Works great, but bought the larger battery. I tried a number of the cameras out at my local best buy before I bought it and this camera had the best image stabilization for the ones in my price range.

This camera is well designed and has all the features I need. The only problem is that I can't get the autofocus to work well--the resulting videos do not have the sharpness I would expect from a HD video camera. And while the focus is poor normally, it is especially poor with face tracking turned on. Not sure what to do. I'm surprised that nobody else has complained about this. Could it be this camera is defective?

I am very pleased with the picture quality in both outdoor and indoor video shots. The video looks amazing on an HD TV. The interface is extremely easy to use once you learn what buttons do what. Playback on the monitor is gorgeous. Love the fact that you can watch whatever clip in whatever order and go right back to videoing in a matter of seconds. Low light video was also fantastic on my recent trip to a Greek winery. Have recommended this video to several friends and family! Prior camcorders were both Sony (liked those as well, but nearly as much as this Canon).

I've had this camera for 2 months now and am very happy with it. It's easy to use, the picture is (obviously) great and it takes very nice still photos which allows me to take only one camera along most of the time. Would advise against getting the built in memory as the price of SD cards drops quickly. Only possible complaint would be the battery which only lasts about an hour. Would also be nice to have a viewfinder since the screen can be hard to see in bright light. Not a deal breaker though by any means. Easily compatible with a mac.

This is my first HD video camera and will be the last for a long while. The features are excellent and the quality of the images are absolutely tremendous. Transferring images from the camera to my computer is a snap too. Mainly because I have an iMac and it's a very simple process with iMovie. I HIGHLY recommend the Canon VIXIA HF S200 camera.

First non-Sony camera, but I felt this Canon gave biggest bang for buck.The screen should be drool-proof ;-) Like an iPhone 4.Face recognition. Ultra light. Many options.Downside is that it is USB and does not load into FCP. Seems to load viaiMovie and will figure a way to cross that bridge.VERY HAPPY

Right out of the box my wife is happy with this camcorder. The wife and I aren't the type of people that have to have the latest and greatest. We bought this camcorder because our usual bang for the buck approach was not working. Over the last 5 years we have spent close to $2000 on different camcorders trying to save memories of our child. All we have to show from that is shaky and grainy memories from 4 different camcorders and my wifes comments on how I can't buy a decent camcorder no matter how much time I spend researching. This was taken the day after we bought the camera using auto settings[..] we could not be happier.

This is the best camcorder I have ever owned. The videos are clean and stunning. It also lets you take pictures and the pictures I've taken with it are much better than pictures I have taken with my regular digital camera.. I would definitely recommend this to everyone. It's pretty expensive, but worth it.
