After my PG348Q died I felt like I don't want anymore of the ultrawide nonsense. It had a lot of problems. This monitor had almost the best reviews and price-quality ratio, so I decided to give it a go. I give this monitor 4/5 stars, because it has a manufacturing (maybe? not sure) damage, but it is not obvious and does not affect the usage so I don't want to send it back.
Pros:
- Packaged very well. A lot of styrofoam. I mean A LOT.
- Easy to use menu,
- After tweaking it to your own taste the image quality is very good,
- Backlight bleeding is there, but not too harsh and easy to reduce with the visual and color temp controls,
- 120-144-165 Hz works like a charm with the G-Sync, but with some games it can be finicky,
- Cable management is definitely a +1. You don't want to see more and more cables,
- Great design,
- Viewing angles are great,
- Built in FPS counter, timer and crosshair for gaming purposes,
- The gliders to move the face up and down works smoothly with even one finger,
- There are speakers.
Cons:
- Image quality is very weak by default, but you can tweak it for yourself. Not recommended for basic users (see cons.),
- There is some IPS glow, but it's an IPS panel. What should I expect? (On the picture it's far more extreme than what you can see IRL)
- Overheating after a while at overclocked refresh rate,
- Small damage on the left side of the frame. I have no idea how could this happen with a high quality and expensive gaming monitor. They should check for defects. Maybe Asus is the new Tesla? :D
- Even though there are speakers, but the sounds quality is very basic. Even my phone sounds better.
A few tips:
- Turn off V-Sync in your GPU settings,
- Turn on G-Sync in your nVidia Control Panel,
- Check Tom’s Hardware website for the best settings you can have.
And the lack of ghosting is amazing, from what I have read IPS panels suffer from ghosting more than TN panels, but someone forgot to tell ASUS this, as the ghosting is almost non-existent on this monitor, it is better that some previous TN panels I have owned. Also the brightness level is very high, in fact almost too high for gaming at night, I have to turn it down when playing at night or I find it hurts my eyes.
It has an easy to understand and navigate menu system too. Only one tiny negative point is the speakers, I find it hard to understand why they bothered with the speakers, they sound shockingly bad, I mean REALLY bad, not that I was expecting them to sound really good, I mean if you are buying this monitor then you are a serious gamer, right? so you will be using proper dedicated speakers, which makes it even harder to understand why they bothered at all with the appalling ones in this monitor, hard to understand, but no matter, this is a superb monitor for gaming and will last you years!
Pros:
Overall the monitor provides great colour and vibrant contrast with amazing details for gaming at 1440p resolution at 60fps, or near almost, from my trusted GTX970 and i7-6700 PC.
Cons:
The build quality is the only thing which lets it down as the front bezels can be seen with small gaps that look odd when up close in daylight and can sometimes let in small miniscule particles and bits of dust.
Backlight bleed was not as bad as I had first hoped when bought but it gradually began to show up in the last couple of weeks, mainly visible on the top right corner of the screen. The screen appearing more misty and greyish which catches your attention when in dark cutscenes.
Overall I'd give it a solid 9/10. The only reason that it's not a 10/10 is because there is some backlight bleed, albeit very, very little.
It's a shame the BLB is such a serious issue with these types of monitors, and even more so when it's inconsistent and has people rolling a dice to determine how bad the BLB they get is. For the price of this monitor, it might not be worth the risk, but if you get a good one you will not be disappointed!!
Picture quality is fantastic but it had four areas of backlight bleed and for me that’s unacceptable for such a premium product so I have returned it for a refund, will have to look at something else instead.
The box is huge and comes as one unit of you want to keep the box for future moving,
Overall I love this monitor testufo.com and you can see the difference a high refresh monitor makes to everyday tasks
The on screen controls make it very easy to navigate the various setting and color modes and the joy stick makes configuration a joy rather than a boring waste of time.
The stand has an extremely good build quality and barely moves when the table is wobbled and the range of adjustments means you can place the monitor anywhere.
G-sync has been implemented perfectly into the display, I could not find any evidence of screen tear or major blur when playing high tempo games and FPSs
The main question is, is it worth the price tag? YES 100%
Otherwise it's a great monitor, I'm hitting 165fps on most games and they look spectacular!!
I would say not to worry too much about the back-light bleed and concentrate on what this monitor does best!
The reason for the 4 stars is probably what you're expecting if you are seriously considering this monitor as you've probably already done some research given how big of an investment it is. That's right, it's the backlight bleed. Now I will say that any pictures you see really do exaggerate how bad the problem is when it comes to this. I've taken a picture and looked at the monitor right in front of me, and the picture makes it look MUCH worse than it is in reality. That said, unless you get extremely lucky you're likely going to end up with some which you will notice in the corners during dark scenes. My top right corner in particular is pretty bad, and I've just been trying to rationalise to myself that it's not much of a problem because so much of what you do while using a monitor is look in the middle where there's no problem at all. It's still a huge bummer given how much you pay, but the trade-off for me personally just balances out to be worth tolerating this downside compared to the multiple upsides.
-------------
The build quality and manoeuvrability with the stand couldn't be much better, same goes for the OSD which is both easy to navigate and has everything you'd expect from a high end monitor.
G-Sync really does makes screen tearing something you no longer need to worry about, though whether that's worth the price premium is up to each person to decide. It's just nice never having to deal with it and games are noticeably smoother.
It would appear I have been fortunate in comparison to other reviewers as the light bleed on mine is practically non-existent. The only way I can see it is by turning it on in a very dark room and looking for it specifically.
The only issue I had is that this product arrived with an EU plug only and so I have had to purchase an EU to UK adaptor.
By no means a fan boy, but after buying several Asus items I can say they have some of the best packaging materials and techniques in this market. When you drop 1/4 to 1/8th of your salary to buy a screen you want to get the best bang for your buck and it's always a pleasant surprise to get a package from Asus. The packages look bad ass and when you open them up you'll find a bit of overkill with safety packaging, always some mix of strong cardboard + air bags + plastic/poly bag and then however much film it takes to cover your screen, shiny emblems and/or accent pieces.
Buy once, cry once!
My previous monitor for the past 8 years or so was a TN type Samsung 226BW (S series). Served me incredibly well, but I wanted to step up to a higher resolution monitor with G-Sync, and also something firing off at more than 60Hz. This and the Acer fit the bill, and it was perhaps reading more reviews favouring the Asus that made up my mind. Pricey, but I figured worth it if I keep it for 9 years like the Samsung.
I'm incredibly pleased with my decision. Amazing step up from the Samsung's 1690x1050 resolution. Bigger screen + clearer picture.
No dead pixels. Very subtle backlight bleed at the top right of screen (I had to look hard to discern it), and virtually no IPS glow (that I can make out.)
Based on the panel I've received, I rate this monitor an easy 5 stars.
The image quality on this thing is outstanding. Beautiful colours, great contrast and the 1440p resolution and 27" screen are a perfect mix. Coming from a standard 1080p monitor, this is a total game changer - I never want to go back! The on-screen display interface is a total breeze to navigate due to the little joystick it uses, making changing settings a LOT less time consuming than other monitors I've used. Not only that, the menus are very intuitive and straightforward. The build quality is very substantial - all matte plastic, totally gloss free. It feels sturdy and like a very premium product. Also, there is an (optional) set of red LEDs on the base which can be turned on and off through the on-screen display. Pretty cool.
G-Sync is (literally) a game changer. Games have never been so smooth before - completely tear free. The overdrive setting on this monitor is also perfect. Minimal ghosting and motion blur which, for an IPS panel, is incredible. I'll never buy a non-adaptive sync display again, it's really that good.
I'm using this monitor with GTX 1070 and I have to say they make a terrific pairing. The performance is MORE than adequate - 60fps+ on ultra with The Witcher 3, DOOM, Rise of The Tomb Raider, Metro: Last Light and GTA: V. Older or less demanding games send the framerate through the roof which is never a bad thing. So it's safe to say, I'm a VERY happy camper.
So, in conclusion, if you have a fairly beefy NVIDIA GPU and can afford to drop £660 on a monitor you can't go far wrong with this one.
The Acer doesn't appear to have as much light bleed but this seems to be partially hidden due to the way the monitor shows colour. There is a distinct yellow tint over the entire screen that semi-hides the bleed. It does have less anyway but it sacrifices quality of colour. I much preferred the colour output and consistency on the Asus. However if you are more concerned about light bleed you are more likely to find it there as well. I was luckier with my third Asus as it had minimal light bleed and the colour was good.
In summary of the panel quality, if you are bothered about colour, get the Asus. If light-bleed is more of a concern then get the Acer.
In terms of the rest of the monitor, neither of them look bad, but I personally prefer Asus's design with the consistent sized bevel around the screen. Acer had a smaller bezel on 3 edges but a huge one across the bottom of the screen. Both the monitors appeared very solid and well constructed.
For gaming; the difference between 60hz and 144/165hz is like night and day. Just bear in mind that you will need a very powerful setup to get above 100hz in every game. I have a GTX 980TI and most recent games like the Witcher 3 and Dying Light run between 50-80 and 80-120 respectively at max settings. G-Sync is also great as it removes screen tearing completely.
This is my 3rd one of these display all with the exact same issue.
I read about this issue quite a bit online, however I came across a statement from ASUS stating that they are addressing the problem by having a more rigorous QC process, with seemingly opened packages being an indication that this process had taken place before shipping to retailers. Now, when my package arrived, it did look like it had been opened, so I was hopeful. Some of the pictures I saw online of the backlight bleed issue looked terrible.
In terms of my own monitor, there is a slightly noticeable backlight bleed when playing dark games like horror games on a high brightness with the lights off, or when having a dark desktop background. In the first scenario it does become less noticeable over time, and when you lower the brightness. It's nowhere near as noticeable as some of the images I've seen online, so maybe the QC process has improved things, but there's still room for improvement.
Overall, great monitor, probably one of the best you can find at the moment. There is the issue with backlight bleed, and there's no guarantee that your backlight bleed won't be worse than mine, but I'd still recommend this monitor.
The panel itself is a joy to use as colours are super vibrant and the resolution and super high refresh rate are amazing when gaming. I'd say the 27" 1440p resolution is the sweet spot for everyday computer use as well as gaming as you can play games at high settings without having to spend ridiculous amounts of money on the latest GPUs.
Unfortunately it is let down a but by the backlight bleed due to the panel being IPS. It is a lottery if you get a good IPS panel or not, however mine came with pretty severy bleed on the bottom right corner and minor amounts on the top right and top left corners. You can't really notice unless the screen is all black but it does factor into my decision to give it 4 stars instead of 5.
Overall a great product which I absolutely love using.
The colours out of the box are really good and after calibrating the monitor with my spyder, the display looks amazing, colours really stand out and the blacks really make the image pop and jump out at you no matter what format you are viewing, games, movies or the internet, everything looks so good. Best monitor I've owned and wont be upgrading anytime soon. Just need my oculus and vive now to complete my setup.
Gsync is a blessing for playing new games, specially games that haven't been optimized very well and ULMB is really cool for really sharp, clear images (I only use ULMB for older games I play that are guaranteed to run 120fps and use Gsync fir more demanding games).
Overall I am very happy with my purchase even though it was quite expensive for around £700. Monitors are something I dont buy very often and my old one has served me well for the last 7 years and still going strong. I do not mind paying more if a item is going to last me a long time. Great monitor!
Use this for gaming and general work. Had an RTX 2080 TI which this monitor absolutely took advantage of and this allowed me to play my FPS games at higher frame rates for a slight advantage in games.
Great monitor even in this day!
IPS is amazing! I've changed it for my previous Dell IPS, and it's definitely capable of some professional editorial work.
165hz is buttery smooth! Seeing my old 60hz it hurts, even in a desktop.
Great picture love the features.
I am sure the bad experiences of many are genuine and a concern but poor handling or initial quality control were probably the cause.
I wouldn't let them put you off seeing for yourself.
However. ASUS QC is a joke as the monitor I received has awful backlight bleed coming from the corners, similar to many others here. A monitor at this price point should not have issues like this!
Thankfully Amazon have a fantastic return policy so a replacement is en-route. I will update this review once it has arrived.
The moment the game switches from an epic battle to a cut scene and the screen turns black you'll see it: the backlight bleed. The screen should be black but it has blobs of light coming thru on the edges. They might say that backlight bleed is common on IPS panels but I expect more from a £670 monitor.
Get it. Enjoy it. Experience gaming like you never have before! Just make sure your rig has the horsepower to fully utilise this bad boy ;)
You will have to faff with a few older game engines to unlock the framerate to avoid the 60FPS cap, but it's well worth it. If you have a beefy NVidia video card, this is a really good option.
Conclusion : if u can afford it u will not be disappointed with it .
-The speakers are not that good :$ they get the job done but u will need external speakers if u r not using headphones.
No dead pixels, good colour uniformity, and the backlight bleed is so minor as to not be an issue. It's visible on a black screen if you're in a dark room and actually looking for it, but is otherwise a non-issue.
Coming from a 60Hz Dell IPS, the G-Sync/165Hz combo is mind-blowing. By far and away the best monitor I've ever had the pleasure of owning.
