G-Sync.

As my old monitor was hooked up through DVI-D, I purchased a DisplayPort cable in advance. I bought Amazon's own DisplayPort cable v1.2 (AmazonBasics DisplayPort to DisplayPort Cable - 0.9 m) as a back up. I had read that the monitor does in fact come with a cable, but the quality of it wasn't great. You do actually get a HDMI cable in the box too, but I am not sure what version it is. I would presume that since the monitor runs natively at 144hz with a resolution of 2560 x 1440, it will be fit for purpose.
The monitor arrives very well packaged. My order came through DPD, and the external box was slightly damaged. Thankfully, the screen itself was very well protected internally, and hadn't suffered any damage.
After setting everything up, I configured the screen to perform at its best. I used this guide: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/asus-pg279q-rog-swift-27-inch-165hz-monitor,review-33467-3.html. It looks absolutely beautiful, especially when compared to my old 144hz TN monitor. You'll want to make sure you change the resolution and refresh rate of your monitor through the Windows settings (right click on desktop, and select display settings).
To test the monitor, I played a bit of Battlefield 1. It absolutely blew me away. I used the recommended settings as per GeForce Experience. The game ran as smooth as butter, and the monitor's standby light glowing red informed me that G-SYNC had kicked in. I didn't suffer any motion blur or tearing. I jumped onto Overwatch next, and I could see a vast improvement there too. Everything was much more vibrant and sharp. I was definitely impressed.
As you may have already read, this monitor is known for suffering from awful backlight bleed and dead pixels, so I ran a few tests, and it turns out I was very lucky. The backlight bleed is almost non-existent. There is a slight glow in the top right corner, but it's completely unnoticeable during normal use. I do, however, have a dead pixel in the top right of the monitor. It's far enough toward the edge of the monitor to not cause me any annoyance, and can only really be seen when looking at a white background, or other light colours.
I am incredibly impressed with this monitor, and I've only been using it for a day. It does everything I need it to, and more. This premium quality comes at a price, but I would say that the price is justified. Here are my pros and cons for the monitor:
Pros:
- The monitor makes modern games look incredible. It's hard to put into words how beautiful everything looks, and thanks to the 144hz refresh rate and G-SYNC, screen tearing is a non-issue.
- The monitor comes with a DisplayPort cable, HDMI cable, Euro kettle lead, UK kettle lead, and a cable to allow you to use the USB ports of the monitor.
- As this is an IPS panel, you can see the screen clearly from any angle without any discolouration.
- Even taking into account the eye-watering cost, the monitor is worth every penny.
- The buttons on the side of the monitor are easy to use. Activating the turbo mode to increase the refresh rate to 165hz is easy, but absolutely not necessary.
Cons:
- Backlight bleed and dead pixels are an issue. I got lucky, and only had the one dead pixel, and minimal backlight bleed. For the price you pay, I would like to think that quality control should be considerably better.
A few tips:
- Make sure you change the refresh rate of the monitor to 144hz. To do this, right click on your desktop, select Display settings, Display adapter properties, select the Monitor tab, then change the drop down menu to 144hz (I used Windows 10, but the process on Windows 7 is very similar). If the refresh rate is locked to 60hz, ensure you are using either a HDMI or DisplayPort cable.
- If you plan on sending the monitor back until you receive one with no backlight bleed or dead pixels, note that Amazon will allow you one exchange before insisting you instead take a refund. This information was provided to me by an Amazon representative over live chat before I purchased the product, but your mileage may vary depending on who you speak to, and how assertive and persistent you are.
- You can check that G-SYNC is working by the colour of the standby light on the bottom right corner of the monitor. If it's red, it means that G-SYNC is enabled. Note that G-SYNC only works with NVIDIA cards, and unless your card is a GTX 960 or above, I wouldn't really recommend buying this monitor. Another way to test if G-SYNC is working is to open NVIDIA Control Panel, click on Change resolution, then select Display at the top, and tick G-SYNC Indicator. Every time you open a game, a notification will appear on the left to let you know that G-SYNC is enabled.
- Make sure that your PC can handle 1440p at a high enough refresh rate, or you won't get the most out of this monitor. I am using a GTX 1080Ti, and an Intel i7 7700k, and I am consistently blown away by the image quality.
In summary, if you have a PC that's capable of 1440p at high enough settings, this monitor is the way forward. The upgrade from a 1080p TN panel is incredible, and is truly something that you need to see to believe. Be warned that your monitor will likely suffer from backlight bleed or dead pixels. If this doesn't bother you, or you have the time and patience to return/refund until you receive the perfect product, then go ahead. You won't regret it.
Let's start with the good things. The panel is an absolute joy to look at: great colours, great viewing angles, and good brightness. And with a refresh rate of 165 hz (overclocked), playing games on it is awesome.
The design is, in my opinion, the best out there. Build quality is great too, and the stand is robust and does a pretty good job of keeping the monitor firmly in place. The speakers are pretty bad, but they do the job for occasional listening. Lastly, the OSD is the best out there. Easy to use and everything you will ever need is a couple of clicks away.
So far an amazing monitor, right?
Not even close. Backlight bleeding is a plague, and it surprises me that we still have those issues in a 700 £ monitor! Seriously ASUS?!
First unit of mine came with dead speakers, dead pixels, and a small defect in the bottom right corner. Backlight bleeding was present in 3 of the 4 corners. Something that my cheap 99£ IPS ASUS monitor did not have. Impressive. When I did receive the second unit I immediately suspected the first one was refurbished. The buttons seemed more "loose", and the panel had a strange yellow tint on it. I'm not sure, but if this is the case, selling refurb products as new ones...shame on you ASUS.
The second unit was perfect except for some pretty bad backlight bleeding. It was noticeable everywhere: youtube full screen, games, hell, even during normal windows use, especially on dark backgrounds!
And lastly, g-sync. I don't know if i was unlucky but getting this thing to work was a pain! It never worked the first time I fired up a game: I had to manually disable it and then re-enable it. Every time it activated the screen used to go off for half a second and then went back on again. This on BOTH UNITS. Watching youtube was awful: on every single video in full screen I had this "flicker". At this point i though this was just how it worked, until i received the competing model from acer: no flicker, g-sync works EVERY TIME, and no dead pixels or build quality issues.
At this point I asked myself: i paid 119 £ more for a product that had the same specs, a crappy QA, and issues after issues! Do I recommend it? NO! AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Unless you have money to waste, do not buy this! It is overpriced, has a lot of issues, and good luck getting a working one!
Before I start I would like to make it clear that I am a very cautious buyer. I always do my research prior to settling on an item, this can take anything from a week to 3 months depending on the need.
So, I have been using this monitor for over a month now and without a doubt I feel this was a good solid purchase.
I was extremely hesitant given the price and a number of neutral and negative reviews across the net.
I'm not a competitive player but my gods my game play has improved! This is mainly due to the refresh rate and the G-SYNCH capabilities of the monitor. I'm mainly playing PlanetSide 2, Battlefield 1 and ARK: Survival Evolved to name a few and they all look so much better than on my, now secondary, ASUS PB278QR.
Build quality is good but not perfect. It's very light weight without the base attached.
Buttons can be a little tricky find and the joystick could be better placed.
I have noticed that in the top right of the monitor the bezel is loose by about 3-4mm. It's minor but something im keeping an eye on.
On a positive note I feel very lucky that it's free from dead pixels and minimal backlight bleed in comparison others experiences.
Would I recommend this?
My advice is see if you can find a local retailer that has this and the Acer XB271HU on display. I say this because the Acer XB271HU is a good alternative for less. I only went for the ASUS because I trust them and mere cosmetic preferences.
Overall and as I have said above, this is the right purchase for myself. A solid performer and purchase despite the price tag and a few minor cosmetic niggles.
I took the plunge and I can honestly say no regrets here. I had tried the Dell S2716DG prior to this and was left disappointed at the poor gamma on the monitor but this Asus.... Wow.... absolutely stunning colour reproduction! There is next to no visible IPS glow when no staring at a black screen and backlight bleed is non-existent except for maybe a small section in the bottom right. Neither of those two are even remotely bad enough for me to warrant a return and I'm quite fussy about this kind of thing.
I would strongly recommend this product for any enthusiast or competitive gamer as there is no perceivable delay considering it's a 4MS GTG monitor, additionally the 144/165HZ Gync is incredible, no visible tearing in any of the games I've tested so far (Overwatch, CS:GO, Witcher 3, Forza Horizon 3, League of Legends, Warframe, Diablo 3 [Mostly for gradient gamma testing]).
In conclusion, if there were issues with QC on this monitor they appear to be limited to earlier models or I've been incredibly lucky. This is a fantastic monitor and I can't wait to experience even more on it.
Firstly, what most people considering buying this monitor want to know (if they've done their research) is there BLB. Yes there is at least on the one I have. There is a tiny amount on top right hand corner about an inch along from corner and a very slight amount 1/2 way down right hand side. The amount of BLB is hardly perceptible, you have to look very carefully to see it and then you can only see it on a dark/black background. I bought this monitor mainly for playing games and some general use. I'm a big fan of Elite Dangerous and was worried about BLB and the dark of space background in the game. I can just see BLB in the game but probably because I know its there and look for it. For anyone unaware of it, I don't think they would even notice it. I've tried out other games like Witcher 3, Doom, FarCy5, Fallout 4, Assassins Creed Origins,Skyrim and cannot see any sign of the BLB in them. In general use and watching films I've found the performance flawless with outstanding picture quality, lovely colours and depth of field. Now the tech stuff. Out of the box its a bit on the bright side and needs calibrated. There's various sites on the net suggesting the optimal settings and I tried a couple of them. I ended up calibrating it to what my eyes thought were best. Since there may be a bit of panel variation I suggest you do the same and use the internet sites suggestions as a rough guide. Picture quality, colours and depth of field are really very very good. I upgrade from a Asus ProArt PA248Q IPS monitor, designed for professional graphic design work. I would say that the PG279Q is very very close to this monitor in terms of picture quality colours and depth of field. For anyone thinking of moving from a TN to IPS, I'd say do it, your eyes will be opened. The refresh stated rate is 144hz to 165hz, my monitor came set at 150hz as its lowest setting no great problem really and I left it set at that as I seen reports of higher refresh rate causing artifacts in some games . The Gsync function works fantastically, incredibly smooth performance in games just remember to turn it on in your Nvidia control panel. The monitor settings are accessed on the bottom right hand side on the back of the monitor using a toggle button. I can only say its a joy to use and the system settings are very easy and intuitive to use. There are three other buttons below this for accessing / closing on screen overlays and turning off the monitor. The overlays are various crosshairs (for FPS) a frame rate counter and timer. I didn't like the various crosshairs but the frame rate counter and timer are handy additions. The monitor comes with stand attached and bundled with power brick, euro line cord, UK line cord, a Display port cable, a HDMI cable and various publications. To use the higher resolution 2560 x 1440 you have to connect using the display port cable so make sure your GPU has this connection before buying this monitor. Overall I would say this is a seriously good monitor. I gave it 5* for gaming as its fantastic for this. I would give it 4.7 for picture quality (due to minimal amount of BLB experienced), for the price it should be perfect but BLB is a inherent problem with IPS technology, on my sample its minimal and I can easily live with it. Brightness got a 5. To conclude then, would I buy it again, YES. So if your looking for a seriously good monitor with excellent picture quality for gaming, work or general use and its in your price bracket, then press the buy button.
There are only a few screens of a decent size (27 was my sweet spot due to space constraints) and this sounded the best on paper. I have read numerous reviews complaining of bad backlight bleed and I was a bit cautious. Now, IPS glow is something normal in IPS screens and a lot of manufacturers are saying they're not taking the monitors back if that's the only complaint. But backlight bleed is another issue. IPS glow is normal and should be differentiated from backlight bleed which is a QC issue/engineering issue. I'm saying that because a lot of the pictures provided as "backlight bleed" issues are in fact IPS glow.
I was lucky, there's little to none backlight bleed. There is some IPS glow, which is again normal.
The specs say that this display is capable of 144Hz (165Hz overclocked). However, its most impressive feature is the ULMB (ultra low latency motion blur) resolving solution. The backlight can strobe at a high frequency and remove an impressive amount of ghosting seen usually in any LCD monitor (especially IPS/PVA panel ones), however the refresh it can achieve whilst doing that is only at a max of 120Hz. And let me assure you that is plenty.
Overall, colour precision is good, gaming performance excellent and it has a really narrow bezel which makes it easy to use in a multi-monitor setup. The monitor base is a bit over the top for my taste, but it somehow works okish in integrating with a couple Dell monitors. It's a relatively good purchase, the price point is a bit high but at the end of the day it's a long-term investment. It works perfectly for precise photo editing and it works for gaming as well, making it a good compromise solution.
Compromise sounds like a bad thing, but it is not. This screen manages to capture the best of both worlds (gaming and professional use) and in doing so gives up little. It is supremely tempting to get 2 more and replace my two old Dells, but that is probably best left for another time.
Good:
*Great colours, especially when compared to VA panels.
*Fast refresh rate for an IPS panel, most are capped at 60FPS.
*Thin bezels increase the immersion.
Bad:
*I couldn't play audio through the monitor speakers, must be a defect.
*Backlight glow can be a distracting when watching in low light or dark scenes.
*The base stand is quite ugly, bulky and prevents monitor sitting close to the back wall.
*The lack of support software is disappointing. I expected ASUS configuration/customisation software.
Overall, it's not a perfect monitor and is probably overpriced, despite the fact that ASUS has obviously cut corner with quality to save a buck.
After my PG348Q died I felt like I don't want anymore of the ultrawide nonsense. It had a lot of problems. This monitor had almost the best reviews and price-quality ratio, so I decided to give it a go. I give this monitor 4/5 stars, because it has a manufacturing (maybe? not sure) damage, but it is not obvious and does not affect the usage so I don't want to send it back.
Pros:
- Packaged very well. A lot of styrofoam. I mean A LOT.
- Easy to use menu,
- After tweaking it to your own taste the image quality is very good,
- Backlight bleeding is there, but not too harsh and easy to reduce with the visual and color temp controls,
- 120-144-165 Hz works like a charm with the G-Sync, but with some games it can be finicky,
- Cable management is definitely a +1. You don't want to see more and more cables,
- Great design,
- Viewing angles are great,
- Built in FPS counter, timer and crosshair for gaming purposes,
- The gliders to move the face up and down works smoothly with even one finger,
- There are speakers.
Cons:
- Image quality is very weak by default, but you can tweak it for yourself. Not recommended for basic users (see cons.),
- There is some IPS glow, but it's an IPS panel. What should I expect? (On the picture it's far more extreme than what you can see IRL)
- Overheating after a while at overclocked refresh rate,
- Small damage on the left side of the frame. I have no idea how could this happen with a high quality and expensive gaming monitor. They should check for defects. Maybe Asus is the new Tesla? :D
- Even though there are speakers, but the sounds quality is very basic. Even my phone sounds better.
A few tips:
- Turn off V-Sync in your GPU settings,
- Turn on G-Sync in your nVidia Control Panel,
- Check Tom’s Hardware website for the best settings you can have.
And the lack of ghosting is amazing, from what I have read IPS panels suffer from ghosting more than TN panels, but someone forgot to tell ASUS this, as the ghosting is almost non-existent on this monitor, it is better that some previous TN panels I have owned. Also the brightness level is very high, in fact almost too high for gaming at night, I have to turn it down when playing at night or I find it hurts my eyes.
It has an easy to understand and navigate menu system too. Only one tiny negative point is the speakers, I find it hard to understand why they bothered with the speakers, they sound shockingly bad, I mean REALLY bad, not that I was expecting them to sound really good, I mean if you are buying this monitor then you are a serious gamer, right? so you will be using proper dedicated speakers, which makes it even harder to understand why they bothered at all with the appalling ones in this monitor, hard to understand, but no matter, this is a superb monitor for gaming and will last you years!
Pros:
Overall the monitor provides great colour and vibrant contrast with amazing details for gaming at 1440p resolution at 60fps, or near almost, from my trusted GTX970 and i7-6700 PC.
Cons:
The build quality is the only thing which lets it down as the front bezels can be seen with small gaps that look odd when up close in daylight and can sometimes let in small miniscule particles and bits of dust.
Backlight bleed was not as bad as I had first hoped when bought but it gradually began to show up in the last couple of weeks, mainly visible on the top right corner of the screen. The screen appearing more misty and greyish which catches your attention when in dark cutscenes.
Overall I'd give it a solid 9/10. The only reason that it's not a 10/10 is because there is some backlight bleed, albeit very, very little.
It's a shame the BLB is such a serious issue with these types of monitors, and even more so when it's inconsistent and has people rolling a dice to determine how bad the BLB they get is. For the price of this monitor, it might not be worth the risk, but if you get a good one you will not be disappointed!!
Picture quality is fantastic but it had four areas of backlight bleed and for me that’s unacceptable for such a premium product so I have returned it for a refund, will have to look at something else instead.
The box is huge and comes as one unit of you want to keep the box for future moving,
Overall I love this monitor testufo.com and you can see the difference a high refresh monitor makes to everyday tasks
